Child psychiatry must be quite a challenge. I'm an adult patient with one of those irritatingly complicated histories - though always an outpatient and not an extreme case, just complicated diagnostically and in finding the right meds and titration. Enough of a history for me to have been both impressed with psychiatry and sorely disappointed with it - or the state of the science, treatments and access to adequate care. But you know ... My first psychiatrist absolutely saved my life. He was an incredible physician. (side note - also a rare African-American gentlemen in the specialty, like yourself). Whatever has happened with practitioners I've seen since then, which (sigh) hasn't always been fantastic care, i always remind myself of my experience with him. I would even say ... I miss him. Dr. Howard Blue of Yale-New Haven, a depression specialist and i have no doubt whatsoever that mine wasn't the only life he saved. He passed away a couple years ago at too young an age, but he really had a huge impact on so many lives.
this video has helped me so much, im a senior in high school and originally want to be a child psychologist, but was recently conflicted on if i want to be a child psychiatrist. i’ve officially decided to be a psychiatrist, thank you so much!

I'm thinking abut going back to school for pre med so I can pursue psychiatry. My path here has kind of been all over the place. I have a degree in theatre performance. For the past few years, I wanted to join the police. I had considered psychiatry passively before but never really thought going to med school was an obtainable goal. However, I recently got out of an abusive relationship and that has started me down this path again. My ex was a cop and a USMC vet who suffered from severe PTSD from the two times he fought in Afghanistan. It manifested as explosive and uncontrollable anger. Eventually, he pointed his work gun at me and later held me hostage in our home. I strongly believe that this could have been prevented entirely if he had gotten the help he so desperately needed. He knew he needed help, but he refused to do the work to get help. When he was on his meds and going to his anger management classes, he was a completely different person but he was dangerous without them. As horrible as he was to me (he was a chronic cheater and liar too), he still doesn't deserve to suffer from that. He's a felon now and the courts are forcing him to get treatment. I would love to work with combat veterans and first responders who are dealing with PTSD. A lot of them don't get help because it is viewed as shameful and weak and they're worried that they'll lose their jobs if they let on that something is wrong. Even my best friend who is a commercial pilot says that he couldn't get help if he needed it because it would be career ending, which is wrong.
More drums! And where are the embarrassing residency photos? On a more serious note, can you tell us a little about what you've seen in your patients during this difficult time of history--not necessarily the negatives, though they can serve to inform too, but perhaps stories of hope?
Was a soldier for a bit... Got out of the military and struggled with what direction I want to go with my life. I decided mental health. Because I am extremely fascinated by how the mind works and because I've been through some sh*t in my life and I've always had a fierce drive to help and heal others as much as I can. Being in a dark place in your mind can be the most overwhelming feeling. Mental disorders and diseases are all too real, I'm afraid. Nobody pays it the attention it deserves.

Did you ever becoming a psychologist with a focus on child and adolescents? I'm a graduating senior majoring in psychology with a concentration in clinical psychology. I want to know an in depth difference between psychologist and psychiatrist?
really the main difference of a psychologist and a psychiatrist is that psychiatrist can proscribe medicine to patients where as psychologist can not. so a psychologist just needs a bachelors in psychology but a psychiatrist has to attend medical school
@@ryansparzak8822 That is not correct. In order to become a Psychologist, you have to get a PHD by attending grad school, which can take another 6-8 years after your bachelors.

Dr Mitnaul I would like to thank you for making the world a better place. I admire Doctors who go into this field as the need is so great.
Thank you for those kind words!
The drum cut was amazing
BigEchoTokyo - I love that idea so stay tuned for that!

I want to be a psychiatrist, but I know they are looked down upon bc “all they do is shove medicine down people’s throats”. I do not want to do that. I want medicine to be almost a last resort if they really need it and I want to focus on communication. But I don’t know how to be a psychiatrist with a psychology/therapist based feel. I want to talk and engage with my clients. Not just give them meds.
Psychiatrist don’t all just give meds.

I just started my first semester of my pre-requisites and even though I have my doubts here and there about whether or not I want proceed this path because of the feeling of intimidation, I refuse to give up. I do have a passion in Mental health and combining it to become a Dr. in helping individuals is honestly rewarding. I decided on this career about a year ago and I just do not know how to begin gaining experiences? Such as, jobs, volunteering, Interships, workstudies, etc. I don't have any experience and I am not sure where or how to start? If I may ask? Have you created a video on any tips of where it can be a good start? Or from your personal experiences of how you became about?
Be sure to check out an earlier video in the differences and if there is more you’d like to know - I’d be happy to do a follow it that’s even more in depth. I appreciate you watching!

Do resident psychiatrists ever see patients alone? (Adult or child) Do residents have the right to prescribe medication?
In the US, resident physicians can prescribe. Their practice is under direct guidance of their attending physician. They may initially see the patient alone but often there is some face-to-face time with the attending as well. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
