    Towpiglet when hauling pipe or lumber beams etc you need to wrap your strap around the pipe or beam to secure it . If you were to go into scale the way you have strapped you would be placed OOS since pipe is not braced by skid next to it and if you hit your brakes hard that pipe is going to move forward

    So a 14 gn has a 15,000 gvwr. Max load is 10,360. If derate to 12 the max load on the sticker goes down to 8,500. That math says I can load 10,200 to be under 26,000. So what do I do??

    I don't hotshot or commercial... but once in a while I tow a trailer for yard work. Anyway, I am curious how it is calculated the maximum you can haul like 26000 for example... how do you make sure you are under that with pickup truck? Yes, I could read owner's manual and find out maximum I can tow... say 6000lb on SUV... but that is usually limited to tow hitch class. Thanks!

    You always have great content. Unrelated to this particular video, but would you mind telling us what size tarps you'd recommend for a 40 ft flatbed? Thanks in advance, watching from Afghanistan (working from USA).

    • @TowPiglet
      @TowPiglet  5 лет назад +3

      2 tarps 16ft x 24ft
      One way it’s a four foot drop, if that’s not enough you turn it and it becomes an eight foot drop
      2 tarps 10ft x 10ft
      This is the flap for the front and back
      The reasoning is I have tarps with the flap attached and now I can’t ever turn it if my load is taller than my drop. Also the tarps with flaps are too heavy and so this way they are easier to lift/use
      Hope it helps thanks for watching

    Your straps were outside the rub rail instead of inside. That is why they call it a "rub rail", so if you rub something, it rubs that rail and not your straps.
    These are the actual federal CDL class requirements straight from the FMCSA website:
    Class A: Any combination of vehicles which has a gross combination weight rating or gross combination weight of 11,794 kilograms or more (26,001 pounds or more) whichever is greater, inclusive of a towed unit(s) with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of more than 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) whichever is greater.
    Class B: Any single vehicle which has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of 11,794 or more kilograms (26,001 pounds or more), or any such vehicle towing a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight that does not exceed 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds).
    Class C: Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is transporting material that has been designated as hazardous under 49 U.S.C. 5103 and is required to be placarded under subpart F of 49 CFR Part 172 or is transporting any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR Part 73.

    Goodstuff man !! I always hear from people i have 14k gvwr trailer and say trailer weighs 6k i can only haul 8k .. But like you said i always though. Truck + trailer weight say 15k total. So it allows you to load 11k till ur not over the 26k.. From how i understand obviously cant put 20k on 14k trailer. But few k over is okay.. As long as ur under 26k non CDL and under regiestered weight for CDL drivers

    • @happypappy6371
      @happypappy6371 5 лет назад +1

      A few over, as you put it is not ok. If your trailer is rated for 14K, that is all you want it to weigh when you cross the scales.

    • @hotshotfx3502
      @hotshotfx3502 5 лет назад +1

      @@happypappy6371 let me try to explain how ive heard guys doing it..and if its diff let me know, Let say were talking under 26k total. So truck and trailer combo weighs in at 15k.. That leaves 11k total.. But ill break down the 14k trailers which say weighs 4500lb. So technically u have a cargo of 9500lb left to make it 14k.. But theres 11k left to be under the 26k number.. From my understanding DOT weighs each axle ? Front & rear of truck then trailer axle.. So its broken down 3 ways.. So by shifting frieght more forward on trailer puts more weight on rear truck axle.. And evens out weight over trailer axle. So u might have 11k frieght on trailer. But be in inline for all the weight over each axle and still be under 26k total for truck+ trailer+ cargo.. Key is be under 26k and be under weight for each axle.. So the 9500lb cargo thats limited for trailer. U would still be legal at 11k cargo by positioning the cargo right.. Obviously u put 13k on it. U are going to be over 26k total and would prob exceeded axle weight limits too.. So there always little margin of error by what truck n trailer can handle . key is to stay under axle limits and total weight of under 26k

    • @happypappy6371
      @happypappy6371 5 лет назад +2

      That is correct. You have to keep the axle weights in line and the total under your allowable gross. But the way he said it, made it sound as though he thought he could cheat a bunch and still get away with it. And I have seen drivers that don't try to balance the load for axle weights. They will put the load all the way forward or to the rear hoping to add more cargo along the way. That works if the cargo is light, but if you are already heavy, all the weight to one end will put you over on an axle somewhere. Another things many hotshot drivers are getting caught with is being over weight for the tire ratings. They try to save money and buy cheaper tires that don't have the load range and will get put out of service for that.

    • @hotshotfx3502
      @hotshotfx3502 5 лет назад +1

      @@happypappy6371 exactly tires another big equation.. If u got 2- 7k axle.. U dont wanna be putting 600lb rated tires on it.. That adds up to 2400lb total with single tandems. I like to be in the load range E which is 1800lb rated tires.. So that adds up to 7200lb . that gives safety and little wiggle room. And by little i mean 10-15% of the total gvwr of 14k by shifting loads around.
