I was apprehensive at first but this cd is amazing! I find it best through headphones. Hysteria and Gods of war my favorites
I agree. My first listen was with headphones and I’ve been thinking I can’t wait until I’m on my commute again because I want to listen again with headphones so I can really hear all the subtle accents on each track.
I saw def Leppard back in august and before they came on, on the screens they were advertizing this album. They were great as always. I went to walmart the next day, saw it and bought it. I only now got around to listening to it and i love it. I think it was great.
Really incredible album and way better than I expected.
Same for me!
Another great video , I will need to head out and buy this cd .
Love all the background info you provide about the bands .
The only thing I see missing on your set up behind you is some cool band pop vinyls.
Yeah I’ve got a few of those like Lemmy and Vince Neil. 😂
Thank you for the great review. You make it sound very interesting. Have to take a listen.✌
I found it to be quite interesting and have really enjoyed listening to it multiple times.
Great review, Brendon! I'll have to give this one a listen.
Thank you, I hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for the review!
You’re welcome!
Great review. I wasn’t sure if I was going to pick this one up but it sounds like it would be a great addition to my collection.
I’ve been presently surprised by it and have been listening all week now. I’d completely recommend the album.
@@BrendonSnyder so far you have been spot on with your recommendations so I will follow you on this one for sure. Looking forward to seeing a review of the Neal Schon album soon too. Love those early Journey pre-Perry albums and looking forward to hearing your opinion
Great review. Brendon. Im really enjoying this album, more than I was expecting. It’s a bit different. Joe Elliott’s vocals are strong & the songs suit an orchestra. Echos of ELO on a few songs (such as Animal) which isn’t a bad thing.
I like the re-working of the deepcuts best. The only one Im not sure about is Pour Some Sugar. I like the fact they tried something different, but not sure it works. Otherwise, great.
Yeah people seem to be on the fence about the new piano ballad version of Sugar. I agree the lyrics don’t translate to a love ballad the way it’s done. But I do like hearing this very different unique version instead of the way overplayed classic 1987 Hysteria version.
Absolutely love it. Paper Sun and Switch are the 2 highlights, but they’re all really good!!
Paper Sun is my favorite. ❤
Great review, I am one that enjoys when bands or solo artists do this kind of thing, some feel otherwise and feel that the originals should never be touched but I don't mind when it's the band themselves re interpreting their own works. Of course many have done the orchestral works and re-imagining and pretty much any that I have bought I have really liked, this one is one also in that grouping, I feel it was a great idea and great time to do so coming shortly (for them) after a studio album, and while the band is touring.
I don’t understand when people have an issue with a band doing a new version of a classic song. They aren’t replacing the original, it’s just something new. An alternate. Like you, I love hearing alternate versions and this is a cool twist on things.
@@BrendonSnyder I agree it’s not like you can’t listen to the original so I find it puzzling. A few years back Rick Springfield did this with “Orchestrating my life” reworking the songs and doing some that were not hits, others I have liked the band Berlin did a similar thing Rick did a few years back, the band a-ha not very known here outside of one hit have an amazing catalog and did a stellar unplugged a few years back. I know that BonJovi often gets kicked around for “This left feels right” but I still think it is what it is, just something different
I love it awesome it’s amazing
Hi Brendon great review! The bonus track is also included in the japanese cd
Curious how it fits on an 80 minute disc when the time on the digital streaming album is 82 minutes.
Same with the CD in the Japanese CD+Blu-ray edition.
See...this is why I watch Brendon's videos. I have nothing but a passing interest in Def Leppard, will probably never listen to this album, and will never own a t-shirt. But he makes it worth it. Keep going, my man. You are a beacon of light and passion for music.
Also...I can probably name two albuns of "Rock/Metal band plays with orchestra" that actually worth it.
Hi Antonio, I’m glad you can still enjoy the review even if you’re not a fan. There are some fun orchestra albums out there. The last one that I really enjoyed was from the band U.D.O.
@@BrendonSnyder Solo guy from Accept...ok, I'm game. He always sounded so gruff, I'm curious to see how he pairs with an orchestra. My picks would be Procol Harum's record with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (killer version of "Conquistador"!) and Anathema's "A Sort of Homecoming" (Don't know if you heard of them. Liverpool band, started doom, currently proggy).
I’ve started listening to it on streaming because I was kind of hesitant about it but I really love the first track.
Yeah there is a lot of depth to the album providing an alternate experience to our favorite songs from the band.
Def Leppard new album Drastic Symphonies is awesome I love it.
Cool! 👍
Def Leppard - Royal Orchestral 💥💥💥
👍🤘👊
This CD is magical
👍
Like it a lot so different 🏴👍🏼🎸🤟
And it’s different in a very good way.
Have you listened to Robert John and the wreck yet buddy
The album version of the song Too Late for love is my favorite track on this album. I love the tribunal sound of the drums, and it sounds much more dramatic. Plus, it was really eerie but cool to hear the old Joe and the new Joe singing together.
Yes, Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad is definitely also on the vinyl LP.
Ok cool! 👍
Pretty damn good would’ve liked to have heard a reinterpretation of Blood runs cold from slang… it’s my favorite newer DL song … but still great
Yeah that would have made for a great one too! I hope the album does well enough that we get a part 2!
While I liked this one, a very interesting release, I still keep wanting them to come out with something that has the grit, edge, and energy of High N Dry or Pyromania (or even Retroactive!). One can hope! But this was a lot more interesting of an addition to their catalog than many later era releases..
Unfortunately I don’t think they will ever return to the sound of the first two albums. I’ve stopped wishing for it and I’m just glad when we get something new.
@@BrendonSnyder you are probably right, and I should, so maybe I'll hope for at least something with a few like the harder rocking tunes from Adrenalize. 🤣
I do like some of their newer stuff and I buy it all, but I know they are capable of going full throttle. I really like Queensryche, and they put out a high-octane release with a lot of energy with Digital Noise Alliance, and Stryper is putting out releases that I think are among their strongest ever (And Tygers of Pan Tang's new album, wow!). I know the guys in Def Leppard are capable...if they want to do it. Love your channel and your perspectives!
I dont own the cd yet and based on what little ive heard im not sure about it, but i'll reserve judgement until i get it ( same day i'll be buying the new Foo Fighters cd probably!)
Only Def Leppard concert I’ve ever been to was Hysteria Tour 1988 in Oklahoma City with band Europe as opener. Show was at a horse racing track. They announced 40,000 people. I was in 8th grade and had never seen so many sexy dressed high healed hot women in my life.
And I had my first ever beer at that concert as well.
Saw them in 1992 at Earls Court, London, our seats were behind a concrete pillar, Gun opened, stayed in a dodgy B&B overnight, much prefer your experience, on the way home we stopped off at a farm to camp and got chased off by an angry farmer, shotgun in his arm, those were the days lol.
I like your shirt
👍
😎🤘
I think one of the best songs is Turn to dust. I really never cared for it on Slang, but with the orchestra it’s amazing. I have two issues with the rest if it. First Sugar does not belong on here. It’s too much of a rocker to be completely stripped down like this. I just can’t get into it. The second being Gods of war. They basically took Steve’s guitar out, although you can hear it barely in the background if they would have left that alone I think it would have been awesome. But overall I like it. I agree with you when you say you wished they would have put stuff from the first album, The overture on here and White Lightning.
I was glad that they included some deep cuts like Turn To Dust as well. I didn’t expect that one or Paper Sun to be on here.
Yes, turn to dust is my favorite and having not ever heard the slang album. This was a new song for me. However, their version of pour some sugar on me is not doing anything for me on this particular album. Maybe I have to take it in a few times but it’s just is not working.
Hi Brendan. Here in England the cd and blu ray audio package was only 3 pounds more.
Is it the same in. U. S and if so, why not pull the trigger on that?
Dan. P.s great review BTW.
There isn’t a 2 disc version here in the US.
@@BrendonSnyder That's a shame.
@@danducken
Actually Import CDs has the cd w/Blu ray disc coming out 26 May
Too late for love stood out
Love Bites is the standout. If there was an epic scene in the latest 'Stranger Things' series then this version wold be amazing in it. I'm pretty indifferent to the rest of the album though. 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' just plain doesn't work with the arrangement they have chosen. But that's just me, I believe that the essence (or feel) of any song needs to stay intact for this kind of thing to work.
This will be a Grower for me but do like some tracks
Pre ordered this new album and received it about the same time as you Brendon.
I'd have to say overall I am very impressed with the re imagining of most songs on here. Like yourself Brendon, I was brought up on this era of music and know nearly every DL song off by heart.
My one and only HUGE letdown on here would have to be the absolute butchering (in my opinion) of "Pour some sugar on me"..😢..my God!!...just a HUGE NO! Turning this epic cult status classic rock song into a spineless, gelatinous love ballad...just NO! I cannot get my head around it.
I have tried three times now but each time it sounds worse.
As I said, overall I am impressed with each and every other re imagining but for that particular rock classic, I will be skipping past each and every time I spin this disc!
I don’t really care for this album that much but I still have no regrets on purchasing this album on CD as a collectors item :)
This album is long gone and forgotten buy most. Oct2023. Music is so disposable these days.
I'll check the album out, but I'm really put off by the artwork: it looks dark and sombre, dusty and broken...there's something really uncool about it imo.
Cheers.
I agree, I’m not sure what they were going for with the art work. Maybe it was meant to mysterious. Or it could have meant to be an attic or storage place where they have dusted off old songs and made new again.
It's a shock, Def Leppard have bored me over the last 15-20 years, but this is very good.
I'm in the same boat. They've been missing the punch of the early era for so long, but this one is solid.
Great to hear that even people who haven’t been into the newer albums are digging this one. Maybe they’ll do a part 2!
Amo a Def Leppard💙!!! Saludos desde Argentina!
Would've be great recorded live with the orchestra
I like this better where they used original recordings and created it as opposed to it all being down tuned for Joe to sing.
@@BrendonSnyder yeah it's definitely cool
The album is good but Pour Some Sugar sounds absolutely ridiculous having those tongue in cheek lyrics to a sombre ballad
I find it interesting that nobody has an issue with the lyrics when it’s a hard rock song but now that they’re listening to the song as a ballad people find them ridiculous. It’s the same lyrics in both songs. It’s just the presentation.
@@BrendonSnyder I just think some songs can’t work as a serious song and are meant to be fun and fast. It to me is a kin to making Cherry Pie into a ballad and earnestly harmonising “you ain’t gonna swing with my daughter no more”.
Hello Brendon how are you doing I think the new Def Leppard album stinks to me some of the songs are to slow that is my opinion I'm just a rock out guy
The orchestra isn’t for everyone.
That Pour Some Sugar on me remake is atrocious. It just does not work as a country pop ballad. The rest of the album is great.
Agree, that one was a snoozer..
It’s takes some getting used to, but I do like it. I appreciate that the band tried something different and went in the opposite direction with it.
Good review. But oersonally think is a money grab. Hiw many times the sold us the same songs?..i think is something as well to complete vol IV box set only...so i eill wait for vol IV instead buy this CD
…that’s just it, it’s not the same songs. List to what was said in the review and then listen to the album and you’ll understand and maybe even like it.
Deaf Leopard 🐆 never released a Heavy Metal 🤘🏻 album and will never release a Heavy Metal 🤘🏻 album
They were RIDICULOUSLY lumped into the "NWOBHM" category
Clearly you never heard there first 2 Def Leppard albums nor have you ever fully explored the NWOBHM genre to know all that it encompassed which was far more than bands that sounded like Iron Maiden. 🤦♂️
@@BrendonSnyder few metal songs like "Wasted" and "Switch 625" doesn't make them a Metal 🤘🏻 band
Many Old Wave 🌊 Of British 🇬🇧 Hard Rock bands were RIDICULOUSLY lumped into the "NWOBHM" category even if never really played Heavy Metal 🤘🏻 and Deaf Leopard 🐆 was one of them
Deaf Leopard 🐆 sound nothing like Iron Maiden or Saxon the leading lights of NWOBHM they sound like Bon Jovi 🤘🏻
You’re idea of Metal is so limited then. Oh well, your loss.
I'm not a fan of this album, I feel they took all the lead guitar shots out and filled it with symphony stuff or another instrument. Other bands have done this same thing but blended the lead guitar riffs in with the symphony music which I really enjoyed and thought was spectacular. In the long run, it's not an easy task to do this kind of thing and have it work. The trick is not to eliminate too many of the band's stand-out harmonies or instruments in each song, but also to blend them into the symphony so they work and sound great. I don't feel they did that here.
Yes it’s a hard line to walk and never easy finding the balance. Personally on a song like Hysteria where they removed the guitar solo and let the orchestra play I think was the right move and make the song elevate.
The 'Paper Sun' remake was pretty good but WOW, 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' was horrendous, one of the worst things they have ever done, never listened to a song that actually made me want to vomit before....until now that is.
I respect the band for taking their biggest song and completely changing it to fit the context of the recording.
@@BrendonSnyder Disagree, would you like it if Led Zeppelin came out with a hip hop version of 'Stairway to Heaven'....lol...?? If it does not work, it does not work and a Country music ballad of 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' does not work.
I do like Def Leppard, and I do like that they tried something new with Sugar, and I’m ok with it. Why you’re asking about Led Zeppelin I have no idea. But as for Def Leppard and Sugar, they didn’t replace the original. You can still go listen to it. Plus the band is known for ballads and has been merging country and folk for some time. It’s nothing new. It’s only an issue if you still expect the band to sound like the 1980’s. Time to move on and expand your pallet.
@@BrendonSnyder You must be getting paid to promote this, as no one with ears like this version....lol.
First off, I am one of the biggest Def Leppard fans in the world. I have everything they have ever put out, however, I didn't like this album at all. I just don't like orchestra music, never have, never will...Just sounds watered down to me. Complete waste of 80 mins of my time. Ill never listen to it again. I would rather listen to the originals...
Well if you don’t like orchestral music then it’s hard to comment or review something you’re not interested in. And of course you’d like the originals better. But for those that like something new including orchestral music with a rock band it’s quite the album.
@@BrendonSnyder Im a huge Def Leppard fan, so even though I dont like orchestral music, I thought I would give it a shot anyways...Glad you liked it.
1:59 "giving it to their fans"? sounds more like a cash grab to me, and 'pour some sugar on me' sounds like a trash bag.
As they say, not everything is for everyone. But how can it be a cash grab? People love to say that when they don’t like something. But this isn’t just a greatest hits album. Those are cash grabs. This is something the band worked on creating new versions of then going into the studio and re-recording parts. That’s work. Hardly sounds like a cash grab to me. But then I like what I hear and I’m glad they made the album.
@@BrendonSnyder nothing wrong with a cash grab - they need to make up for all the lost revenue from the canceled covid torus - but at $39 for the vinyl version this definitely is one, and I'm just saying they didn't make this to "give" to the fans (like Rihanna & U2 do - in U2's case even if you didn't want it). and kudos to Def Leppard for buying their back catalog back from their record company so they don't have to pull a Dokken or Foreigner and release a greatest hits albums of re-recorded material - I'd be more interested if it were a symphony & metallica type release - performed live with a live orchestra and with an additional blu-ray release, but this one sounds more like a Bon Jovi 'this left feels right' release. 'pour some sugar on me' sounds horrible. maybe it would have come out better if they did the duet with Alison Krauss instead.
@@BrendonSnyder speaking of putting WORK into this one, do you know if Rick Allen is actually playing on this album (he wasn't on the last one)?
I won't be paying money for this one. From what I've heard from it, it's all very disappointing.
IDK, most of the comments here are saying how much they like it. To tell you the truth, I’m pleasantly surprised by how many people seem to be enjoying it. It’s a nice change for once.
A terrible album. Drastic, indeed.
Different strokes for different folks!
No thanks. The downward spiral continues for this band in my opinion
dont like that cover !!!!
