Where Does Wind Come From? Crash Course Geography #8
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 фев 2021
- There's an invisible force shaping our lives, affecting the weather, climate, land, economy, and just whether a flag looks majestic or not - we're talking about the wind! Today we’re going to go into the science of where the wind comes from and take a closer look at the major wind systems and pressure belts across the globe. We'll explain how the Coriolis effect causes the winds to curve (and makes air travel a bit more complicated), explore the doldrums and horse latitudes that could stall ships for days, and show the enormous impact the trade winds had on European colonization of the Americas.

Finally learned what atmospheric pressure is. The weight of air molecules above pressing down on the ones below. That shift of weight causes air movement, hence wind.
5:50 the marching band example reaaaaaally helps!
"I bring the wind with me."
*Europe while colonizing half of the world*
The Ms. Frizzle vibe is strong with this one.
There is no greater compliment! :)
Nice

I love the little disclaimer at the end of the episode. It's a very poignant reminder of how historical revisionism influences our view of everything from geography to meteorology, as well as the terms we use to discuss those concepts; I commend Crash Course for acknowledging that and seeking to give an unbiased report on the facts.
Alizé:" I hope wherever you are is in the center of a sunny high pressure area..."
Me: Please no. I don't want another summer long drought.
I'm in the middle of such an area right now (NZ) and I'd give anything for a strong, cold southerly straight off the Antarctic.
"Summer long drought"
Me, a Californian who went through a decade long drought: "Oh you sweet summer child"
so u want rain and depressing skies ??
The Thumbnail made me think you guys started Crash Course Plane Piloting.
The combination of "plane piloting" and " _crash_ course" might be a bit unfortunate. ;D
This is a fantastic explanation of wind, continuity, pressure gradients, and the Coriolis effect, both for introducing non-scientists and as a recap for people in science! My meteorologist brain is just screaming at the map at 2:44 because it breaks a lot of the rules of surface analysis
Makes sense! I always wondered why low pressure is always associated with thunderstorms every time I watch the local weather
Awesome, clean, beautiful and clear explanation. Love the dynamics and way of explanation.
❤
The Polynesian people used wind, clouds and even migrating sea animals to navigate the ocean and seas!
I'm 10% smarter after watching this video.
50% here
first time geography viewer here- i absolutely love this host!!! Alize is wonderful.
Glad you're liking it! Happy to have you here with us!
This video suggestion popping up on my lock screen is very concerning to me because I was having a phone conversation with a friend earlier about wind direction and what causes it.
I’ve never wanted to be a geography student so much in my life ;)
Thank you sm!! I’m really struggling with earth science rn and this was really helpful.
We were in the path of the strongest parts of Derecho last August, we got 97-101mph depending on which weather station you listened to. If you had asked us this question then I'd have said, "That way, real damn fast!!" lol
Wind is a fascinating, deadly, and amazing phenomenon that constantly baffles me (as a fisherman).
This is some fun learning, and it sure sounds like Alize had fun being an airplane pilot for the thought bubble.
Highly interesting and informative answer to a question probably all of us have asked at some point.
Does Crash Course have a series on Meteorology?
Thank god for this video lol I was just wondering this whole high af
You explained this so well ty
Outstanding. Super narration. ❤️🤺
I love your top! Would love to know where to find one :)
0.75 speed is great for this
Trees sneezing.
Maybe they have allergies?
How do you create your videos? It's just so amazing that I want to create my video reporting like your contents💖
Neat. This was the one phenomenon that I've yet to fully understand myself. I've briefly learned about the Coriolis Effect, and also understood that cloud formations were, in a way, indicating certain wind patterns and strength. Learning that air pressure isn't as consistent as I was led to believe cracked the code for me, since after that revelation, I realized that a change in air pressure is equal to an air-based button toy like a whoppee cushion -- High Pressure exhaust the air while Low Pressure is the room that collects the cold air inside the cushion.
So, yeah. It's pretty neat to learn that our Planet deliberately farts nonstop every second of every single day automatically. Makes those nice breezy days in the park feel all the more better to me.
Yayy I love this course
Hello from Turkey
So how do flat-Earthers explain the Coriolis Effect?
1 mistake so far! You are great!
Thanks for the explanation .. talking about high and low pressure areas why the moon doesn't have wind 🤔
Good content and good shirt
Educational!
Hi, thank you for this enlightening video.
Question: Is the name 'polar high' means that it's characterized by High pressure? (if it's true, doesn't it invalidate the mnemonic device "happy" ? Thank you
I used to hate geography throughout all of school. Now I don't, maybe because I don't have to mindlessly memorize all the rivers and lakes on the globe, but can actually learn and understand something.
Awesome 👍🏾
Thank you!!
Beautiful and smart 👌 ❤️ love the Top 🎽 👕
Watching the video twice because I didn’t quite get it the first time around
You ROCK!
great!
Did marching band in high school. Can confirm marching analogy
This shirt gives off huuuuge *Phil Plait* energy! :D
Loved his astronomy series!
i've never heard of sandwich islands before interesting name 🥪
SOUTH sandwich islands, mind you. there were more than one. Hawaii too was once known under that name as well btw.
Those are only the South Sandwich Islands. The other Sandwich Islands is now called the Hawaiian Islands. There are two other separate (single) islands, each originally named Sandwich Island. All these were named by Captain Cook. The First Lord of the Admiralty just happened to be the fourth Earl of Sandwich.
So we know where winds come from -- where do Sandwiches come from? From Captain Cook sucking up to his boss.
The sandwich isles are the original name for Hawaii. But the “south sandwich isles” still exist and are in the south Atlantic. They are no where near each other either.
Chicago
Cool 😎
Wow
This planet is full of surprises 🎉😢
eating beans produces wind
Hilarious 😂😂😂
How did 8 episodes of CC get released and I'm only JUST NOW SEEING THEM?! Bots, consider yourselves scolded!!
I love the “Hey let’s explain Great Circles; we don’t want to accidentally contribute to this flat earth thing”. Way to do your part.
Yay, geography! :D
Ah, Strahler, A. Introducing Physical Geography. 5th Edition.Wiley and Sons.
I have a love hate relationship with that book and never want to see it again.
Blew me away! Goodstuff! Thanks!
Wow, geography can also be interesting!
Wind comes from trees sneezing.
I liked the whirlwind joke
Why do easterlies blow east to west? Shouldn't they be blowing west to east with the coriolis effect?
Wind time
lol wonder how flat earthers think the wind exists
How is the wind made
👍👍👍👍👍
Hey
What a nice topic 👍👍👍
Im 16 and I didn’t now this😅.
how wind created during the night
Thank u professor
👍✨🔥
😊
Great Video!
Where I'm from, the wind is anything but silent
Looking at partner: I KNOW where the wind comes from by the smell...
Out of thin air...
Crashcourse is great, geography is interesting and you are lovely.
Where does it comes from, where does it goes? Where does it comes from cotton eye joe!

Interesting how Equador is on the Equator. Coincidence?
