A big part of why this failed is because the BLOSC series had so much heart to it and is much more in line with what Andy would have watched. The pilot movie even had Tim Allen reprise his role

I'll tell you why: the premise was wrong. As a standalone the movie would have been fine, but no one bought that this movie came out in 1995 or made Andy (and apparently the whole world) fall in love with the character of buzz lightyear. And the heroes destry an ecosystem and the movie wanted too much at once. This was just not the wacky, zany 90s scifi adventure little boys would have loved.
Yup. Buzz Lightyear of Star Command WAS that 90’s kid adventure. Lightyear was a soulless attempt at a cashgrab.
This movie needed fun, adventure, cool aliens, exotic planets and locations. Aliens and adventure seemed like such an obvious choice, why did they avoid it?
The Director of lightyear literally made the movie fairly grounded, and he did it in the sense that he didn't want everything to be so fantastical that there was no connection to it as an audience ( himself) those people at Pixar make movies for themselves. 🤦

I definitely think some of the politics surrounding the film sunk it. ESPECIALLY Tim Allen’s recasting because the disrespect to him is a disrespect to Toy Story fans as well as the conservative-leaning family movie audience. The gay kiss was far less of a dealbreaker for the conservative audience imo than recasting Allen.
But the second HUGE problem was ignoring the Star Command series, which was a big part of the OG Toy Story fandom and wordbuilding. To have amazing characters in Mira, X-R, and Booster replaced with side characters that weren’t nearly as iconic was a severe disappointment to the OG Toy Story fans who are old enough to share movies with kids of their own. The diversity of the film would have been completely fine if the writers had made a story about the Star Command quartet. The problem is the dull, uninspired designs of the new characters which didn’t drum up hype for the movie.

Okay this right here destroys the notion that geeks hate diversity. Hell the fact there's hype for the Spiderverse sequels does further damage to that straw-man argument.
But I know this song and dance well as Hollywood expects the average consumer to be idiots with the memory of a goldfish.
If Pixar brought dreamworks, then this movie, cars 2,brave, and the good dinosaur would have been better and massive hits.

That's another thing why I was dissapointed with Lightyear, and I agree with you man. The OG Star Command was still better than this movie.

Jesus saw a day coming where every sort of behavior , even ones considered by his generation and culture as vile evil, would be flaunted.
Although he was speaking about a day, or the inevitability of sin being discovered and people answering for it; the other meaning was that there could come a point at which it was bragged about.
The Pride stuff should not go down well in a kids' movie in any culture. It's just not the time or format in which to discuss it. Anymore than blatant Muhammdism or Christian Preaching about the deity of Jesus or Muhammad in the same type of movie. It's just not the right time or place for it. Movies are meant as an escape , not as a place to be indoctrinated or preached to.
"Making the story better". Than going on and on about how some viewers and you are too conservative to accept different kinds of love. Ffs.
