  • Lightyear was pixar's returned to theaters but it bombed, and knowing what has happened with elemental to moderate success, I thought it was now time to revisit more of why it didn't work for that return.

      @odindarkll3706 true.
But imagine Sox being what he was made to do "a therapy animal" for Andy. Maybe his dad left and Andy is acting funny and not playing with woody as much. Woody is going crazy and Sox is just analyzing BOTH him and Andy. Making woody realize that Andy is hurt about his dad and thus becomes a more selfless toy.

No one was more excited for Lightyear than I was. I thought it was a real opportunity to expand upon Buzz the character and make an exciting space adventure that expanded upon the lore in a different way.
Instead, I got a boring ass movie that made Buzz lifeless, ruined the most iconic Pixar villain, and was not a celebration of Buzz Lightyear.
It amazes me that they screwed up so badly with a movie that was the easiest thing to get right.

    - The granddaughter doesn't know about the ''to infinity and beyond'' even tho it was a thing her grandmother did with Buzz, has she never mentioned it in her books? She was in the room when her grandmother did that, finger and all.
    - Invisible mode was the granddaughter's idea but she doesn't know about the time limit?
    - She is afraid of space? Why? Did she have a traumatic accident? Her grandmother died of old age, not in space.
    - The way how they are trapped but still able to move and merge and destroy the panel that lets them free. Who made this?
    - When the car makes a sound the bugs attack people instead of going outside where the sound was coming from.
    - The old lady can take three things and make them explode. It's just lazy writing to make you believe she can do that. Also, was she failing for years or did she just now wants to be a space ranger?
    - Taika Waititi's character has a pen. Why would you need a pen if the technology is beyond paper, especially in space?
    - Time paradox. If Buzz went back in time to stop the crush there would've been no reason to test the fuel and he wouldn't find what he needs to time travel.
    - Also, how lucky that he just found everything he would need, including a spaceship with robots that can only say Zurg, for his crazy plan to work.
    - Everybody thought that Zurg would be Buzz's father but they changed it to be ''subversive''.
    - Anything involving robot cat that just saves their asses.
    - ''References'' to Star Wars, Halo, and many other Sci-Fi I don't get. Your movie has to stand on its own! Shrek has a bunch of references but also an interesting world and jokes of its own.
There are probably hundreds more problems that I don't have the energy to type out.

All of these are definitely true and annoyed me when I watched the movie lol, the only exception being the fear of space. People are scared of the most random things for literally no reason (there’s literally a phobia that’s the fear of the colour yellow), so it’s entirely plausible that she’s scared of space, but tbh that part of the movie didn’t really make a lot of sense to me and it just seemed like the fear was only added in at the last minute for plot purposes because it wasn’t shown AT ALL (that I remember) that she was scared of space before when it was brought up.

When it was first announced, I was under the impression that the movie was basically going to be an in-universe biopic for the "real" astronaut that inspired the toy Buzz. So it wouldn't have Zurg, aliens, etc, and it'd be more gritty and realistic like Gravity or First Man.
But the actual film claims that it's the fictional movie Andy saw before he got his Buzz toy, and they even straight up say it was 1995. With that in mind, it would have made way more sense to actually make something closer to a 80's/90's sci-fi action movie rather than modern day one.

I'm convinced Pixar wanted to make another Toy Story film, without Woody and the other toys, so they decided to make a Buzz Lightyear film, hoping enough people would have forgotten the 2000s cartoon series - Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. Unfortunately, Pixar has greenlit a fifth Toy Story film, going down the same route that doomed Ice Age, It's very disappointing Pixar could make something awesome, only turn 180 with some generic dribble. Moreover, I recommend BLoSC, it's a fun and creative cartoon, it is everything the film tried to be, novelty is what the audience is craving, we get enough generic gruel, now we want gourmet.

-Dark visuals with realistically rendered environments
"Let's tie it to Toy Story!" - Someone at Pixar
Buzz Lightyear was apart of a toy line marketed by cheesy commercials and a silly action cartoon (Buzz Lightyear of Star Command). Buzz Lightyear was a riff on whacky 1990s action cartoons that were meant to sell toys to kids, like Ninja Turtles, Swat Katz, Street Sharks, or Road Rovers. That's what this movie should've been, a movie inspired by 1990s action cartoons. Hell, the movie explicitly states that this was the movie that Andy saw back in 1995.
Lightyear looks nothing like this. If they wanted to make a super-serious space drama, then they should've made a new movie.
Now that I think about, this movie also looks really freaking detailed for a CGI movie from 1995. It's like the animators hopped in a time machine, went forward about 25-30 years, and then came back with cutting-edge supercomputers. Back in 1995, Toy Story 1 was as good as CGI got. Otherwise, most theatrical and straight-to-VHS animated movies in the 1990s were hand-drawn. This movie should've looked like The Lion King, Prince of Egypt, or Pocahontas, for example. Would've helped it stand out, too methinks.

This movie fails to appeal to anyone it was trying to appeal to.
    - It fails to appeal to LGBT supporters because there is only a 2-second lesbian kiss that would've been edited out for less accepting countries and was later added again after people pointed it out. But people still won't watch a bad/boring movie for one scene. You can't have it both ways! Either make an LGBT movie with a budget that takes into consideration that the movie won't be released everywhere.
    - Parents with small children would rather not have to have a talk about LGBT. Also, the lesbian couple gets together and one of them is shown being pregnant. Kids may not know where the babies come from but they know there needs to be ''mommy and daddy''. I don't think the parents want to talk about in vitro or the possibility that she just asked some guy to get her pregnant so she and her wife can have a baby.
    - But Toy Story is a franchise from the 90s. I bet people who grew up with it and people who don't mind this one scene would be more than enough to make this movie a huge hit. Except people already know the backstory of Buzz because it's a parody of Star Wars and they retcon it in the movie anyway, so what's the point of watching it?
    - And don't give me the ''they wanted to appeal to a wider audience''. Toy Story already has a huge audience. And why would people unfamiliar with and who are not fans of Toy Story would want to watch a spinoff movie which has so many references that they won't get?
Besides those two scenes (gay kiss and future Buzz being Zurg) the whole movie is just a bore. With the trailer failing to engage people, it feeling like a cash grab and inflation people just decided they could watch it on Disney+ and forgot all about it.

    • @Commenter839

Honestly I think my only real issue with the lesbian scene is that this was supposed to be a mainstream movie that was made before 1995. There's no way in hell an interracial lesbian kiss would be used as anything more than a gag in that era. It would be like if a popular movie from 1935 showcased a black person with a respectable life and authority over a white person- it may be "inclusive", but it's not really indicative of the time period

I will be honest with the gay kiss scene, it did almost make me feel like leaving cuz I thought that was gonna appear more throughout the movie and i was questioning if the movie was a lgbt one or not since i wasnt expecting to see that in a film for kids. Also, future buzz being zurg just messes up everything now and it makes the entire timeline confusing and lost.
Disney is trying to expand its audience with the lgbt stuff and it doesnt even have to put lgbt in their films to get viewers because im pretty sure they already were viewers anyways. Its pointless, unnecessary and just plain stupid! Plus, we already know Disney is abusing diversity a lot more in their films just for attention.
Film overall just wasnt interesting enough besides its impressions for its looks but it didnt work because every film nowadays seems to care more about the look instead of the plot. And with Toy Story 5 coming out, I think im gonna start watching dreamworks since theyre doing better and still making actual films with actual plots.

That opening text bothers me so much, because of how they're trying to pass this off as THE definitive Buzz Lightyear origin story, THE movie that inspired Andy in-universe to get the toy, when it ultimately proves to be anything but. Instead of a fun, imaginative action packed sci-fi adventure like one would expect this movie to be, it presents a boring convoluted slog that feels more catered to older audiences than the kids that would actually get invested in the character of Buzz, and retcons the lore that we all know from previous Toy Story movies and the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command show into something totally nonsensical. The opening text proves to be a big fat contradiction, a hollow lie to justify this movie's existence. Let's be real here, this is NOT the movie that Andy saw in 1995, this is the "darker and edgier" reboot of Buzz Lightyear that came out in Andy's adulthood and proved to be a let-down and a betrayal of its roots, much like what the sequel trilogy was to long-time Star Wars fans in the real world.
I remember seeing announcements of Lightyear that gave the impression that it would be the in-universe biopic for the astronaut that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy. I guess THAT turned out to be a lie as well.

If its supposed to be live action in-universe, then their special effects are wayyy too good. If its supposed to be an _animated_ movie in-universe, that's also way too good for the time period...
And most of all, they would NEVER have a lesbian couple kiss on-screen in a movie supposedly made around the time Andy was a kid. If the kiss was somehow "controversial" in today's time, can you imagine how much backlash they'd get in 1995? When same-sex couples were considered extremely taboo??? Video game adaptations might not be exactly what's going on here there's a good chance bus like you was a comic that has a movie adaptation on the way in a different company that has the game rights to us like you probably use the source materials to make the game months before the actual movie came out or even after showing two very different continues so I'm going to say Andy may have watched this and enjoyed it but the toy and merchandise had nothing to do with it.
