That guy slammed the door on the white one. If anybody ever slams my doors, I simply shout "don't SLAM muh doors!" All of the SHO's I've had don't take much to shut the friggin' doors. I guess he was still used to ford cars having granite slabs for doors back in the day. Excellent upload!
Yamaha purposely tamped down the power; this engine can easily rev to 8-9000 rpms, but the alternator could not handle that. Also, Americans like their torque, so this was a good balance. I tore one apart for an auto tech class, and the tolerance specs and the engineering into this engine is remarkable. One of the best ideas Ford had in the 1980's, along with the Taurus, and I do not even care for Ford!
"Leather wrapped SPORTS steering wheel"? That's the exact steering wheel in my stock 1990 LTD Crown Victoria LX 😂 Except they don't call it a SPORT wheel.
What single non-FI bolton is going to add that much power? Or do you mean if you bought every non-FI bolton made for the SHO? If you mean the second one I can believe that. I don't believe they neutered it to not take out the Mustang GT though... I think simple cost, noise, fuel economy, and emissions requirements dictated what sort of parts and tune were acceptable.
Front and rear floormats!!! and the rear defroster standard!! WTF!!! Forget the cars of today! I knew someone with this car, not back then but 10 years ago (used one of course). It was nice, pretty quick (for what it was).
The last clip with the black '89 SHO and the race car driver was all taken from the "1989 Taurus SHO Introduction" videotape and reused by Ford in this 1990 video. In that tape he goes: "There is also an A/C cut-off which activates in a wide-open throttle condition. Just one more example of Ford's automotive engineering excellence" So it looks like for this 1990 video Ford edited what he said to make it look like he was taking about the intake, instead of the A/C cut-off
I have one of these cars I have a Mercury stever version of these yes tamina Mercury stable version and I love these cars to death my Taurus version blue pass a Mustang 5.0 like it was water bloop a Chevy Impala SS V8 and outran convicts like if you're in any of the reviews these Taurus is out run the V8 Crown vics and 5.0 GT mustangs like nothing
@NadrianATRS The 1990 STS also has a 4.9L V8 with only 200hp, a soft ass suspension, and was only available with an automatic transmission.........so yeah great choice *rolls eyes*
For some reason (until 2011) all Mustang V-6's have been boat anchors. My wifes 2005 Freestyle, on the other hand, is a 3.0 DOHC making over 200+ horsepower, like the original SHO...
I heard when the sho was first developed. The motor was pushing over 300 hp from yamaha. And ford said... Oh no! it can't be faster than the mustang gt, so they knocked it down to 220 hp. I stiil kick myself for selling my sho.
Ha! Funny how they never mentioned the Yamaha engine! I could be wrong, but wasn't that standard from the get go? Gosh I regret trading my SHO off at 98000 miles. I'm a police officer now, and I know that the SHO would smoke a Crown Vic off the line!
You are right about the horsepower. But the new SHO weighs upwards of 4000 lbs... while this one weighs much less. Many automotive sources claim that the original SHO is the best in terms of driving satisfaction - on par with the late-80's BMW 5-Series for much less money. The new 2010 SHO you refer to is a bit softer; the suspension allows for a bit more lean for comfort, for the daily driver who wants a bit of spark.
It's kind of sad that there are more 89-91 SHOs showing up for sale than regular 86-91 Taurus out there. I want an 86 Taurus LX wagon but I've had no luck.
Actually the Manual Transmission version came with a 3.0L. The 3.2 came with the later Automatic trans versions as there was more parasitic power loss. and you're half right. the block is based on the FORD vulcan v6. The heads were engineered by Yamaha. Thanks
The SHO's remind me of the newer 3800 w-body cars like the Impala, MC, Grand Prix, Regal, and Bonneville. Fast, unsuspecting, FWD. The formula for destroying hondas.
Chris Kiss They yes they did come with 3.8L V6 GL Sedan Essex The Police Taurus Manual. laughter's on you kiddo...now go do your research and come back with A smarter comment.
Some guy told me he owned an 89 GL Taurus and he changed the fluid for the transmission every 25,000 miles and the filter for it every 50,000 and he NEVER had a problem with the transmission ever.
Notice how they fail to even mention the BRAND of engine this car has. They can't put their bloated ameri-yankee egos aside and admit the gem of this car is under the hood, and built in Japan. hahahhahah!!
"Constant failing?" My Aunt's old Mercury Sable LS wagon has over 200,000 miles on it and it still has it's original factory transmission with no problems. It's called maintenance. If people thought these cars could go to 100,000 miles without changing the transmission fluid and filter they were sadly mistaken. Fluid and filter changes between 20,000 and 50,000 miles depending on how much you drive and no transmission problems.
@@ironinquisitor3656 when the introduced the AX transmission it had multiple issues due to the torque of the V6 fwd car I doubt your saintly aunt’s car hard such a drivetrain
The Ford Taurus of the second fastest sedan in America if you research it in the world record book the Ford Taurus SE Joe has 5 horsepower less than a V8 Mustang and if you research a lot of comments I can people race against these cars they realize what these cars have their one of the true Jen's not a lot of people know about LSU our car and just do as he s and there are good Sleeper Car they sound so but when you put that better down there gone
You've got to love how sexy that intake manifold is on that engine. One of the best looking engines ever.
thanks! enjoyed walk around. love those cars!
just picked up a white/grey 94 SHO, luvvin it, the previous owner babied her so im lucky as hell.
211A package. Awesome. Stay tuned for the Robocop variant. NJ Police...
Because I love wagons.
I have an 89 and love it. Dad bought it new off the showroom floor! Thanks for posting these interesting and informative videos on a great car!
Uncle had one when they first came ou.t rode in it once, but not to it's full potential output.
I love the 1990 Caprice, and I also love the Ford Victoria 1991, is there
Ford motor companies engineering excellence? I think you meant to say Yamaha
Ford's design. Yamaha built it for them. Made a bundle of money for Yamaha, saved a bundle for Ford. Win-win.
The RoboCop´s Car
I don't think the SHO was around in 1985 when Robocop was filmed. It was just the regular Taurus.
Original RoboCop was not SHO
Robocop's car was a 1986 Ford Taurus LX not SHO.
I always wanted a 80s Ford Sierra Cosworth from Europe but I'd settle for an 80s SHO.
I love watching old car and truck vids. Thanks for posting
i have a 2000 ford taurus old car but reliable no issues
i have this year sho and i love it had for three years
Tim Allen drove an SHO (I think of this design) in Disney’s “The Santa Clause”.
Lambs prefer manual transmissions, so this is a great car by 1990 standards.
I have a 1991 SHO - it's awesome. Preferred equipment, baby. Japanese V6 power!!!
'95 Jewel Green with A/C bypass. This car owns at high RPM. When the flaps open up you hear it and feel it. SHO
no you could get a 5 speed in all the first and second Gen SHO's. 89-95 It was the 3rd Gen V8 which did not offer a manual. 96-99
PART 1

I'm sad they never made an SHO wagon. I would have loved to buy one.
There was a kit you could get for it
@@danielmcgee7469 Not gonna butcher a car sorry.
It's funny how in 1989, Yamaha makes an engine that is a 3.0L that makes more HP than the 3.8L V6 in Ford's 2004 mustang.
Pretty damn pathetic.
That's what happens with 15+ years of technology are added.

Just look at that fit and finish LOL. God I love the SHO though.
@NadrianATRS Touche'. You win
220 HP? The 2010 SHO Blows this SHO Out of the Water with 365HP!
But it took 20 years of technology and two Turbochargers to pull it off.
It's an 80s and early 90s car. What do you expect?
LOL He said "Double overhead cam"
@91Taurus the STS has burl wood interior, so there. :P
I think this was the last sho you could get in a 5 speed manual
haha it looks like it spins the tires when it pulls at 4:08, but its an old skidmark. clever

Nikolas Tesla I had both, a 95 atx and a 07 Grand Prix GXP with a LS4 v8. Both were a blast to drive.
yamaha heads, ford's block
@NadrianATRS u mean plastic woodlooking interior? hahahahhaha gm junk
The transmission used in those cars from 1986 to 1994 (AXOD AUTOMATIC) was garbage. 1995 and newer they got better with the ( AX4N AUTOMATIC.)
