An off-beat and informative look at the 1992 Ford Taurus LX. This video was given to owners of the 1986-1991 Taurus, to inform them of the features of the new 1992 Taurus.
@@brianmullins5957 Damn lucky... I found a 92 GL with the 3.8 for $900 that I've been daily driving, its got a lot of torque but damn I wish it was a sho.
Whenever I watch this video, it takes me right back to when my friends & I were kids & knew just as much about these workaday family sedans as we did the latest mega buck exotics in our car magazines.
I love this this car and its Mercury counterpart. I'll never forget the gray Taurus and blue Sable my family used to have, I miss them both....(along with family that has since passed away).
I noticed at 5:08 that the speedometer is from the Malaise Era. It reminds me of the 85 mph speedometer in the 1980 Oldsmobile Omega, because 45 mph is the midpoint in the speedometer range. The regulation that limited speedometers to a 0-85 mph range was removed sometime around the early 1980s. The speedometer of the 1984 Mazda 626 topped out at 120 mph. While the national speed limit in 1992 was only 65 mph, a speedometer topping out at 85 mph looked archaic and clashed with the sleek and cutting-edge look of the Taurus.
The fact that these still look nice and modern inside and out after more than 32 years is testimony to the hard work of Ford back then. 24 mpg mixed driving, comfortable, and reasonably safe.
My aunt gave me her 1992 Sable LS station wagon. Sky blue, keyless entry, digital dash, electronic climate control. The car needs the alignment and a new paint job as well as the interior cleaned. I prefer the Gen 2 Sable over the Gen 2 Taurus because starting in 1992 they dropped the digital instrument cluster on the Taurus but kept it for the Sable factory.
A lot of people have some nasty things to say about the old Taurus, but I respectfully disagree. I still have a '92 3.8 liter LX and love the car. I don't ever plan to sell mine. The Taurus saved Ford in the 1980's and the '92-'95 Taurus was more popular than any other sedan. They out sold Camry & Accord. These Fords were the first American cars designed to go 200K. I still find them in salvage yards. My wife & I have owned 7 of them since the 1980's and have had very few mechanical problems. In order to keep the AXOD transmissions going, you had to change the filter & ATF at 50K and to drain and replace the ATF about every 25K thereafter. My '92 LX is easy to service and repair, generally high quality and comfortable to drive after 25 years. They don't deserve the bad rap.
Stephen Littlefield I was born in April 1992 and aquired my great aunts 1993 Ford Taurus GL 3.8L V6 in 2010 at 18 year's old and love the car and have been given news that the original engine in it has been given a limited life and might blow up in week's or years it's really unknown how long it will really last until it blow's up it stalls out at red lights and stop signs 😓 have a thought that popped in my head about swapping out the tired old engine out and putting a Ford 302 small block engine in it and swapping out the front wheel drive transmission for a rear wheel drive transmission from a Ford explorer two wheel drive or Ford ranger two wheel drive
They did not outsell the retail Camry, not by a long shot..by 1993, most Taurus were rental cars, and the Camry became , and remains to this day the nest seedling car in North America ..ya they're so great that I can't remember the last time I saw a Taurus of any vintage worth a 6 pack of high life, complete trailer trash status.
They do deserve a bad rap, why do you think cars like Camry and Accord completely dominated the Taurus after a few short years, nothing to do with the Taurus's lousy engineering huh?
The one thing that the Tauruses had that none of the Japanese cars had was that lever shifter. The reason why I tended to like American midsize sedans more than Japanese midsize sedans is because of the shifter on the steering wheel. Oh and I also like the Taurus because of Robocop. And yes, I am fully aware of the Taurus's problems like the transmission issues and the headgaskets that blow on the ones with the 3.8 litre V6 engines. Alfa Romeos also had problems too and yet, they are still great cars.
i have a silver 92 taurus, it only has 52,000 miles on it, its a very nice car, i love it, have had to do some work to it, probley cause its been sitting in a backyard for over 10 years, but all in all, its very nice. i havnt had any transmission problems yet, but both of my drive axels have broke? idk how, but still, easy cheap fix.
After nearly 17 years this car still looks modern. Great car and very safe for it's time, it's still a pretty safe car today. But the 2010 Taurus will a true Accord Camry fighter, like the Taurus once was back in the 80's to mid 90's. If you haven't seen it yet do a google search on it and you will know what i'm talking about.
I know that this video is largely tongue-in-cheek, but I can't help but point out how it's weird that the kid would know the combination to open the Taurus's door via keyless entry system.
John Goforth I don't see any Tempos or Escorts where I live and very few Tauruses older than the fourth generation. I see some third generation ones but not many.
Ive got my late grandmas '91 taurus gl in my garage with 43k actual miles. She babied that car, looks like its 5 yrs old instead of 25. Dare i say it runs and drives better than our '10 minivan????
I love these dealer introduction videos. Are there any for Mercury vehicles? Would like to see some for Sable, Cougar and some of the other cars if there are any to be seen. Love Sable/Taurus, great cars.
Besides a Buick Grand National, Regal T Type, TA GTA, 5.0 Mustang or IROC this was, strangely, next in line as my dream 1st car. I got none of them, lol. But, all wasn't lost. My 2nd car was a Pontiac Fiero GT...which I supercharged. Now I have a 17 SHO .
Jim Jones that idea popped in my head the other day thinking about swapping out the tired 3.8L V6 engine for a 302 V8 engine since the original engine has been given a limited amount of life left in it because the mechanic told me that sooner or later the engine is going to blow up it's really unknown how long the engine will last mechanic told me it could last week's or years
@SteelCity1981 The current Taurus is more of the full-sized market. Such as the Maxima, Avalon, Chrysler 300 to some extent. Where's the Fusion is more of a Camry competitor. Regardless I agree, the new Taurus is very nice.
My winter beater looks like the car In the video, but I've yet to wash it since I bought it. My other Taurus is a garage queen... Yes they are POS's, but it suits me well!
I agree, but the 3.0 Vulcan is dead reliable so you can't fault it too much And by '96 you didn't have to take the Vulcan anyways. You could get the 3.0 Duratec with 200HP
That was typical America back then when the children were smart and well spoken it's still a lot like that in many places however it is diminishing quite a bit.....Ford should try to capitalize on that market once again....there is nothing wrong like acting like a normal suburban family
A teenager that's excited about a Ford Taurus. And conveniently he knows EVERYTHING about the car. He's definitely a lonely kid. Who needs friends, they would just get in the way of learning about the Taurus
Lol Car Companies are always compete against each other which is normal but i don't think fords beat Honda or any Japanese car company we had a 89 ford Taurus and the shit was always overheating no matter how much antifreeze we used fords just suck pretty much.
Ohh yes I owned a 92 Taurus back in my young days bought it back in 95 only had about 32,000 miles on it unfortunately only had it 4 years and the transmission went out these cars aren’t as good as they made it look on tv their junk.
My aunt's 1992 Mercury Sable wagon has over 200,000 miles on it and it still has it's original factory transmission. No failures. It's called maintenace.
"Station wagon, good choice!" ha ha ha, if only they knew 20 years from then the Station wagon would be dead, replaced by compact hatchbacks and SUV's, I mean hell, even the Sedan is on it's last legs as it gets lower and lower on sales charts, people either want to go small or go big these days.
I just wanna say that I own this on VHS and it's one of my favorite possessions.
Keep it forever
OMG! That dorky kid is me if I was an early 90s geek. Now I'm a 2009 Ford geek. This video cracks me up!
I am still driving the 92 Taurus .
Nice I gots a 2013
My DD is a 94 taurus sho.😄

God, Billy’s just me talking to all of my normal friends, back when I had normal friends.
I was like Billy at that age 😂 But since I live in Europe it was a Mondeo not a Taurus
My first two cars were Tauruses, a 1995 electric red GL and a 2001 graphite blue SEL. Great cars for the most part.
The fact that these still look nice and modern inside and out after more than 32 years is testimony to the hard work of Ford back then. 24 mpg mixed driving, comfortable, and reasonably safe.

I liked this update even better, especially the front end.
Taurus was the best car for the money. And aunt kathy is a best piece of art anywhere in town.

No they dont . I know people who've had taken really good care of their Taurus and Never had issues.
The Camry's and Accords were built better.
I wish there were a video like this for the Mercury Sable as well.
I have one until present days. I love it and I don´t change my Taurus for nothing!!!!!

Bought a 92 Taurus GL with the mustang v6... I absolutely love the car!!
@trucker life yeah, I know that, but no one knows wtf I'm talking about when I say that, most people only know it as the mustang v6
Two men in a car publicity...so rare...

He probably hangs out at a Ford dealership on the weekend
Oh and notice how Derek doesn't question how he knows it? 🤔🤣
I still see Taurus's, Tempo's and Escorts on the road way more than any GM or Chrysler from the same year.

I haven't seen any of those pos on the road in years and for good reason
Because they weren't taken care of and neglected by the owner.
This was Me as a Kid!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
That boy look like me. lol. my family forbidden-me talking about cars because of that.
that kid actor has pretty good comedic timing imo
Derek used to play Andy Andy on Cheers. He tried to kill Diane!

Guess they were sold out

I just realized that the Derek guy in this video is Dr.J from the late '80s TV show, "My Secret Identity".
His real name is Derek McGrath
Yes that shown the good old days
EEC IV is OBD I.
still have more torque from the V6 than its 4 cylinder competion Fact is a car this size dosent need 140hp let alone the over kill they have now.
A teenager that's excited about a Ford Taurus. And conveniently he knows EVERYTHING about the car. He's definitely a lonely kid. Who needs friends, they would just get in the way of learning about the Taurus
