When the Taurus came out in 1986, it was revolutionary for an American car. Even though the overall look unabashedly emulated the Audi 5000 that had come out not long before, the Taurus had something of its own and was way ahead of similar GM offerings. Mechanically, the car proved less than stellar, with crude engines and temperamental transmissions, but it was nonetheless a very good work horse. Many design features were clever, practical and even aesthetically pleasing. Overall, it was a tremendous achievement for Ford at the time.

When the Taurus/Sable was introduced to the American market in 1986, they were a bit of a shock! Not a square edge in sight, these cars were round and ahead of their time in terms of styling. Their big downfall was their transmissions which often did not see 100K miles. They also had a host of other maladies, like electrical issues and rust, but generally these cars sold very well because of the way they looked inside and out. In 1989, the GM A-bodies sedans and wagons - the Chevy Celebrity, Buick Century, Pontiac 6000 and Olds Ciera - were all going on seven years old, ancient in this industry. Despite numerous updates, they looked old and out of date compared to the Taurus, itself only a year or two off from a major redesign.

And a 99 SHO which was a great car until 125k which it fell into pieces overnight and suffered major mechanical failures. Not the cams either. But the price I paid I cant complain.

The more Ford automobiles the dealer sells the more money he and the motor company will make. The Ford automobile is named after Mr. Henry Ford of Detroit, Michigan who pioneered the assembly line method of automobile manufacturing.

Or falls off due to body rot from the inside lol which happened to many of these cars

Little did they realize those plastic rocker panel covers would do more harm than good. I owned a 94 Explorer which had the plastic rockers over top of the metal rockers. I removed them and sure enough there was sand and some salt caked on the plastic and inside the drilled out holes where the clips go in. I took a rubber mallet and tapped the bottom and sides of the rockers and had loads of rust and dirt fell out.... I still don't understand why automakers continue to use this horrible design.

I owned a 89 Taurus back in 99. It was my first car. Sadly, it was one of the worst cars I've ever owned. Not great memories come out this car.

Was the car even taken care of?

Ironinquisitor I bought it from a mechanic so I assumed he had the car well maintained. I remember the engine would burn oil. Power steering pump went bad one day while I was driving and couldn't make a turn. Fixed that. After that the radiator started to leak. Fixed that. Then the transmission just went out. It lasted me 1 year to be exact.

It doesn't sound like the car was well maintained at all.

    I owned 1991 3.8 L Taurus. It's a lemon(

That's because you had the crappy 3.8 liter Essex V6. Only get a Taurus with the Vulcan. The Vulcan is a good engine that won't die if you take good care of it.
