Dudes, like I own a 94 SHO Manual and I Daily it... I call it a SHO... my friends call it a SHO... I've never met a person that called an S.H.O. it's easier to say and funner... I'm not going to say S.H.O.... its SHO...
Saying S.H.O is a mouth workout... it doesnt roll off your tongue like GTO, CRX, NSX.... I rest my case. Everyone calls it a SHO...

"Dude", are you even old enough to remember when the first gen was new? Back then it was easy to spot people who didn't know what they were talking about if they referred to the first gen car incorrectly as SHOw. Where I come from, we laughed at people who said that. Anyone who knew what the car was called it S.H.O.

    • @USA_djhiggi77

@@johnjones393 that's called the smug factor. If it's my car, I can call it whatever I want. I have many cars, and I graduated high school in 1993, so yes, I remember when they were new. If someone calling it a "SHOw" offends you that much, then you need to get your brain checked. Considering there are PLENTY of retro reviews and modern reviewers that call it "SHOw" as well as S.H.O... either one works, if you wanna call it a S.H.O be my guest, I'm not gonna throw a fit about it lol

Great video from a guy who use to repair them for customers in his personal garage and who had the distinction of being graced on Super Ford magazine as the first SHO in the country that was supercharged ! @Nathan Kirby read the video description. The regular Vette was faster than a SHO in most cases anyway, by something like .1 seconds -60. Still extremely embarrassing for a Chevy fan, and winnable with a better driver in the SHO. I still want to get a 92-95 do a hybrid 3.0/3.2 with the MTX. Still amazes me to this day all of the 2 valve Chevy fans, when a 4 valve LT5 put out 150% the power.

hi MR Random well I remember all this when Ford was developing the Taurus it was said the Yamaha motor came from Yamaha's formula 1 racing car detuned of couse which I seen there F1 Yamaha in to racing a car never made seance to me 1 they don't build car's in the first place 2 while Indy and formula 1 is the top of auto racing even car company's will tell you unlike drag racing stock car racing and sport's car racing indy and formula 1 offer very little in the way of returns but cost the most to run a car for one season to the tune of one million of more i guess the little returns that the car company's get from Indy and F1 has to do with unlike drag and stock car and etc that a least look a little like whay we can buy and drive the Indy and F1 don't I guess people like to see raced what looks like they can buy and have well good night 🌅🌇🌆⛼🌃 MR Random 👍👍👍C😎😎L

It was a GREAT 👍 car but not at lot of mechanic’s wanted to mess with that transverse engine. I remember changing the spark plugs and wires...a real doozie because one of them was up against the firewall. Without a ratchet with a swivel, you could forget it. Parts for it was astronomical at the time as well. It’s good to see someone recognize this car.

Was introduced to it by my uncle who picked one up brand new in 89. Went for a drive and was floored by how quick it was. I ended up getting an identical one in 94. Had so much fun driving this car. Had it long enough to do the timing belt change myself twice and the valve lash adjustment once. Fuel pump was the only thing to let go on the car. Surprised a lot of other "performance" cars in it, including a few Mustangs. They were quick and nicely equipped, especially the seats with bolsters that you could squeeze in with the push of a button. Launching these cars wasn't easy.....lots of torque steer, but again, a lot of fun. Wish I could have kept it.....

I have to disagree with you on that top speed. We were going over the causeway about 1 in the morning and riding in my friends new Thunderbird super coupe with the cruise set at 140 mph. Our friends behind us in a 1989 SHO easily walked us down, pulled alongside of us and cut on the interior light and waved bu bye and drove away from us until his lights were out of sight. We tried to keep up in the T Bird but it petered out at 147 mph. When we got to New Orleans we asked the guys in the sho how fast they were going and they all had the same answer, 167 mph so forgive me for saying a sho is just getting rolling good at 140.

I bought a used 1990 SHO in 1995. It was that weird silver/champagne color. I loved that car so much. Crazy thing, I went to some mexican mom and pops used car dealer in SoCal and actually drove off in a 1991 Taurus GL. They called me the next day and said the GL had a salvaged title and asked if I was interested in a another Taurus they had. Sad part is, I was a knucklehead back then and one night while cruising around drinking and smoking weed with some friends a sheriff tried pulling me over. I got into a quick chase and crashed it into a telephone pole. Car wasn't totaled but not drivable and it got impounded for 30 days. I left at the tow yard and got a repro on my record. 😔

Mine was a 91 burgundy/black with slicers and 'back in the day' it was an S. H. O. period. No one was calling it a 'SHO' except some dweebs who thought they were insiders but weren't. Loaded with everything but full leather, and I always liked the JBL sound. Girlfriends liked riding in it, hated (or couldn't) drive it b/c clutch was super heavy. Always thought that was the best year, though I've often wondered if the 92-95 experience would make me change my mind. Was never as adventurous with this as with some later more sophisticated stuff (this was still basically a Taurus suspension): never had it past 125-130 and it was not a corner carver. Someday I may pick one up again tho' - good times and better bang for the (not cheap in 91) buck than you could get anywhere else.

SHO is a FWD car with a nice engine and a glass transmission. They cannot launch worth a damn. Any Foxbody with a decent launch or even LT1 F-body will gap it. Throw forced induction in the mix and it's no contest. "King of the streets" is not really accurate, though it did handle well compared to solid axle Foxbody cars. Of course, you'll want the ability to hook from a dig on the street, and the SHO lacks that.

You know, these are not that easy to find. I found a 92 manual SHO in my area for 1750 bucks on craigslist. Says it runs and drives but is in rough condition. Are these expensive to repair? Are parts hard to find? I was really debating on going and picking it up just so I can say that I own a manual SHO.

I had an '89 3.0Liter SHO, with the Mazda 5spd. I think it was a smooth comfy sedan . I did hit a 135 in mine b4 i donated it to Charity. There were oil leaks everywhere n being a front wheel drive working on it sucked. I found it to be heavy , carrying all the crappy Taurus bodyparts, but i did a lot of roadtrips in it.
What is really funny is that i clearly remember doing the 135 i pushed it to , because i was getting my ass kicked by 5.OL 1988 Mustang n we were both getting our asses kicked by an older model Corvette!😂
I know I used to be so proud being a SHO owner but looking back, i think Jay Leno was wise to put that SHO engine into a Ford Festiva😊 thats where it belongs👍

Originally, the engine had 285hp. It literally smoked the Mustang so bad Ford had Yamaha tame it. My first car was a 94'. I later bought a 95'. I had the 94' for 5.5 years and put 130k miles on it. Only problem was the alternator went out. I got it with 37k miles. So almost 170,000 miles and only a bad alternator. Most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

The actual engine is part Ford and Part Yanaha. The block and crank are from the Ford 3.0 Vulcan V6 and Yamaha designed the induction part from the heads and Valve train and cams. Ford didn't have a multi-valve DOHC until 1993 that went in the Cobra Mustang and the Lincoln Mark 8.

I had a 91 SHO with a total white plus package that my grandpa bought new, only had 80,000 miles on it. I absolutely adored that car. I ended up busting the clutch in it and after spending a while fixing it, some dumb broad pulled in front of me at an intersection and totaled it only a week later. I still have it and dream of one day repairing it and getting it back on the road. I’ve got a modern car now with all the features and such but I still would trade it all in for my SHO back.

Interesting video with some good research. The Ford Taurus Super High Output (as mentioned "SHO" designation came later on other cars) was very good for it's time but not a supercar. I never had the electronic or differential issues as mentioned. Many who drove these cars at the time might relate that while it was quick, it was difficult to get the performance out of the car due to the 1989/1990 cars using a cable linkage for the shifter and clutch. Why? The engine's torque would rock the engine/transmission in the motor/transmission mounts as you shifted. Essentially (unless you had solid mounts) the engine would strain "away from you" on hard launches and then rock back between shifts. All of the push and pull created problems with the accuracy of the shifter and clutch engagement points. Check the top center of the upper intake around the SHO logo, if its shiny, then the hood pad has shined it because the engine/trans mounts are bad and allowing the drivetrain to rock. Somewhere in 1990/91 Ford upgraded to a rod shifter and that made shift feel 100% better, but as mentioned it was a slightly heavier car. Handling/braking are good for a car of that size. The 15" wheels are lightweight aluminum for 1989. Lookout for rust and HVAC problems-the dash needs to be removed to replace the heater core. This car will not beat a C4 Corvette, but should run fairly even with a stock 5.0 Mustang (if that exists). The clutch disks on these cars were small and fairly weak. The engine is the jewel and the rest of the car is not impressive. Most of the footage was taken from modified cars. These cars can be had for about $1000-$1500.
