  • This is a great little accessory if you are using Canon EF lenses on your Canon EOS M APS-C camera. It increases the speed by one f-stop and with wide angle lenses it reclaims some of the lost width due to the sensor crop factor. This video includes an overview and also sample images.

I have spent ages looking at various videos/reviews on using this viltrox adapter with lenses. This has been by far the most informative and helpful guide for me to consider using one with eos m50 for photography. Thanks for sharing your knowledge

Thank you! I hope I said it all in the video, but for the money it is pretty good. There are more expensive versions, but I don't think they justify the extra price.

I have both Viltrox adapter and speedbooster. They are very useful.

Very useful, well made, good quality optics, and reasonably priced! I have the Canon regular EF-EOS M adapter, but the Viltrox is cheaper and I'm sure, just as good. There was no Canon option for the speed booster, but if there was it would probably be very expensive. The Viltrox one is great.
I've been using the speed booster a bit more recently. My son plays football and in the indoor stadiums where light is low, the extra stop gained with the speed booster is really useful.

7:21 What happened here is that the photo was taken at the same distance - the DOF will be the same because (as you point out) the diaphragm of the lens is physically no bigger - just the light concentrated onto a smaller area - however what the speedbooster allows you to do is move in closer for the same field of view. If you frame the photo the same as a photo without the speedbooster you will notice a difference in the DOF, equivalent to 1 stop, as you will be physically 0.71 of the distance away (1.4 times closer) to the subject. Exactly the same effect as going from FF to APSC to M43, at the same distance at the same F/Stop all photos will have the same DOF just a diminishing FOV each time. The reason FF provovides a DOF advantage say to M43 is that you need to move twice as close to the subject for the same FOV producing 2 stops equivalent shortening of the DOF.

Thanks for the explanation. I've watched videos describing the difference between FF and APS-C and heard similar explanations. When changing aperture on a lens the amount of light entering the lens changes, as does the DOF. I was just trying to make the point that although a speedbooster will give you an extra stop of light it won't change the DOF.

Thanks for the review and explantions! I have a question, though: is it possible to unscrew the tripod mount?

Sorry for the delay replying. RUclips doesn't always notify me of comments and I only find out about comments I haven't responded to when I look in RUclips Studio.
Yes, it is. The tripod mount is secured using two Allen head screws so you will need a small Allen key. I have quite a few, but I can't honestly remember if Viltrox supplied one with the speed booster. It's a standard size and easily obtainable if they don't.

Hello: I believe you are using the viltrox speed booster m2 version one.
Do you have problem of using older manual lenses with this speed booster?
    Thank you.

It will only accept Canon EF lenses, all of which are fully auto lenses, therefore I haven't seen this problem. I guess you could add an adapter to put old manual lenses on to the speed booster, but I haven't tried this. Sorry I can't help.

can i put this on a full frame body a7iii??

I have no experience with Sony FF cameras and don't know if Viltrox make a speedbooster for Sony, but you may be able to get one from Metabones. Speedboosters are intended for full frame lenses used on cameras with APS-C sensors to restore some of the focal length that is lost due to the crop factor. From what I have read, I believe that if you use a speedbooster on a Sony FF camera it will put the camera into APS-C capture mode, which will defeat the objective.
