ray fostore Thanks. I had the exact one in this video for about 20 years while living in the US. Amazing guitar. But our house got robbed last year in the UK and they got all my guitars as well as everything else. I’m hoping it will turn up in a pawnshop or somewhere at some point.

Fender didn’t change the Robben Ford model’s name to an Esprit - The Esprit was the bigger, more 335 sized guitar in the same series as the Flame which Robben Ford also played pre-signature model. Incidentally, Wurzel from 1980s Motörhead also played a Fender Flame.

Right. Ford played an Esprit. Diff is slightly bigger body and symmetrical cutaways on the Esprit. Third model of the series was D'Aquisto, archtop hollow-body with F-holes. Named after the designer of these 3 models of the "Master Series". Also each model had 3 versions:. Standard, Elite, and Ultra. They're playing a Flame Standard. The plain round fretboard dots give it away. Elite abd Ultra have MOP diamond-flake marker inlays.
Robben Ford played an Esprit Ultra, which had Ebony tuners (Elite had Mother-of-Pearl tuners, and Standard just the plain metal ones) and Ebony fretboard, vs. Rosewood on Standard & Elite. Also the trussrod cover will have "elite" or "ultra" engraved in it..Standard has a blank cover.
Also these models contain Double pot Tone controls, where 5 is full treble. Then, and you can feel the detent at 5, it picks up "TBX" which adds presence to the tone.

Great stuff guys! I have Esprit Standard from that era and it's great guitar (I'd like neck to be a bit beefier...). Both Flames and Esprits have shorter Gibson scale, though and body wood is actually alder (at least in Fender's documentation). Yours is modded similarily as mine: I think that bridge piece is not original Schaller roller saddle model (tailpiece seems original) and pickups are not original Schallers. Also splitcoil switch was not featured on Standards originally. Standards came with 1meg pots for all volumes and tones and I know some modded Esprits that have new pickups and old pots and it's kinda unusual sound for 2HB guitar. Anyway, thanks for sharing and cheers from Finland!

Hi mate if you have 1500$ to spend would you get this guitar in new condition or a Gibson in this price range? I love the Gary Moore sound
