I forgot to say; the 'price' of borrowing this guitar for a few days from a friend was to mention that the bottom pickup ring is missing! If anyone knows how to source one (with re-mortgaging...), let me know :)

Maybe one of your followers could 3D print a ring ? (folks are at home, bored)
If it’s the same size as the neck one, maybe it’s possible to copy that ? Good luck to him. Sweet playing. AS EVER. 🖖🏼

Korean Squier Esprits can be found for < $500 USD, those parts *might be swappable. I only say might because I own and love an Esprit that I got on Reverb for $350. If the parts are indeed swappable, you'd have a backup guitar for when you play out with the Flame. Good luck!!

I have old Esprit and I had it fitted w/Duncans 15 years ago or so by luthier. I remember he said the pickup rings were clued to body and they had to be broken during removal. Fast forward to couple of yrars ago, tried to source them and contacted someone at Schaller (iirc) who made the pickups but unfortunately they did not have any spares left.

This was Robben Fords main guitar for years... designed by John Curruthers and The late Dan Smith...the green burst prototype sat in Curruthers guitar shop in Venice Ca for years.....together they also designed the Yamaha SBG and SA guitars in the late 70s

Those Yamaha ones you're talkin about?... For the past month-and-a-half I've been prowling the web quietly waiting for one to pop-up. It has the pros that a Les Paul has but doesn't have the cons(certain guitar players have playing Quirks, and they can't play certain guitars).I have problems playing a Les Paul neck because the scale is too short & the fretboard is not wide enough. But what do I know they're going to burn everything down.

2 things... I hadn’t realised until now that you have such a recognisable camera angle! Seemingly missed by everyone else but such a great position you so often film from. And the more youtube guitar videos I watch the more I start to think, I’m not sure if I really want to get ‘good’ as everyone just seems to play the same thing, same licks and solos and noodles, but you (and Phil x) are the exception it seems with a an endless repertoire of fitting music and tunes to play for each instrument and video I watch. You’re properly talented and entertaining my man.

I bought a fender mij robben ford model 3 years ago. Same colour as the flame you`ve got there. It has a spruce top and alder body with internal tone chambers and ebony fret-board. It has paf style pickups ( as per the original R.Ford model ) and the pickups are split-able via a toggle switch allowing series or parallel humbucking modes. Very good quality and top notch tone and last but not least VERY versatile. Great video and playing as usual.. thanks..!

I have one of these Fender Flames. It's a Sunburst top made in 1984. I have had it for over 30 years and my favorite guitar that I've ever owned. In my opinion, this design landing in the middle of a Les Paul and a Fender is just absolutely perfect. Whenever I've brought it out to a gig, everyone asks what it is, as those who see it loves it. Omigod what a gorgeous tone and resonance thanks to Chris's playing. When Chris hits that high note at 0:14 he elicits a feeling from that single note that reminds of what Stevie Ray Vaughn could express so well with just a single note. Delicious bends and slides at the end, I think this might be my favorite Chris Buck guitar track. Plus a backing track from Danish Pete, two supremely tasteful guitarists on a single track!
My favorite Gibson has always been the 335 because of its long history, versatility and gorgeous symmetrical body shape. To see this shape in a Fender without the trademark headstock is simply amazing. Will Fender make a reissue thanks to Chris's playing and video? If so Chris should be in their ads for a reissue. Think we need to tweet this video to Fender!!!

I used to own one of these. First off it can’t do Les Paul Classic Rock or Hi Gain tones. The body is alder & chambered. But they have a lovely jangly clean tone. Almost Rickenbacker-esque. My brother had it first and the band he was in used to do a lot of REM tunes. It seems to like cleans and warm overdrive. He later sold it me and I sold it on. Then he missed it so bought another. They are still out there. It was very well made, a real high quality instrument.

I was recommended the Squier Esprit by a guitarist friend in Australia. He was so impressed, he sold his 335. I subsequently found one for sale in the UK, supposedly ”shop-soiled” so heavily reduced. On closer inspection, not a mark on it and it plays beautifully. Unfortunately does not have the coil split on the Duncans, and I have thought of adding it, but I'm really happy with the tone and playability and it compliments my Strat ”other” guitar.

I have a pearl white and gold Flame Ultra I bought brand new in 1985 after it sat on the shelf at a local music store for a year. I got a great deal on it becuse they wanted to get rid of it. It's a great guitar although the neck adjustment is a bit unstable and is very sensitive to changes in humidity and temperature. Easily remedied with a truss rod adjustment. Other than that it's an excellent instrument. Mine has the floating Schaller tailpiece and that took me awhile to get the hang of how to tune it and keep it in tune but it is possible. The tuning was and is very stable since I figured that out. I tend to use the pickups in their humbucking state most of the time mainly because I like humbuckers. In split coil mode the pickups are a lot more prone to extraneous hum than my Strat or Tele but is still quite usable.
Maybe the reason they are not seen very often is that the people who have them don't want to part with them. They really are very well built. Being primarily a Gibson-guy I really like the ebony fingerboard and neck profile. It's a heavy guitar weighing in at 9.4 pounds but Les Pauls were heavy back then as well. You just need a very wide strap to spread the load out. I used it as my main gigging guitar throughout the early 90's.

This guitar in 85’ was my first big guitar purchase when I was 16. I paid 550 for my Fender Flame standard with a Kahler Pro tremolo system. The history of the tremolo was that after production Fender decided to add the tremolo to some of them so a guitar with one is ultra rare of an ultra rare guitar. Love this guitar.

I had one of these, a Flame, bought 2nd hand in ‘89... beautiful guitar, I’d not been playing long and didn’t really know what I had... Sold it a few years later, the guy who bought it said he was a Robben Ford fan, I think I said, ‘who is that?!’, but to be fair, there was no internet or Spotify back then ;-/ TBH I don’t really regret selling it, I never got the vibe... and I guess that’s what it’s all about, finding and playing something that really connects with you. Went on to Strats, and then on to Telecasters, so I’ve never been a Gibson guy. Thanks for the memories Chris ;-))

I still have ads and an interview with Robben Ford about this guitar. I remember him saying that he thought that Fender were saying one of it's selling points is that it could sound just like a Strat and that it doesn't. Interesting guitar.

I was going to buy one of the Robben Ford models in the '80's but they where $3500 , $4500 and $5600 Canadian if I remember
correctly . Wayyyyy out of my price range . In mid 2005-ish I bought one of the Korean ones ,I got a deal at $420 because
the store thought the neck wasn't right , couldn't get the strings low enough , it was regular $800 . It's a nice guitar and is chambered
    above the bridge .

I remember playing these guitars when I was younger going in the music stores. I'm almost 50 years old. I almost bought one of these. I wanted a Les Paul that these were so much cheaper.when I finally did get a Les Paul I didn't like it and traded it away because the neck wasn't wide enough. I have big hands and it felt like I was playing a little baby guitar. I don't like the nut to saddle radius either..

Ive got an Esprit that I modded by putting in the Robben Ford model pick-up Duncan’s JB and ‘57. Love it. Great underrated guitar. Still have the original Schaller Humbuckers in the case. I’ll hold in to them although a bit of routing was needed to fit the Duncans.

Managed to find a Squier Masterbuilt Esprit for a good price and it is a FANTASTIC guitar.

I love these guitars. And, although not quite in the same league, the squier esprit are also pretty good, but just as hard to find too...

I’d be intrigued to try one actually. As you said though, they seem to be pretty rare as well!

I really thought it was a Ltd edition revstar! Oosh. As an aside, the tiny window when my dad bought his Japanese strat from Anderson’s in the mid 80’s, you couldn’t get a USA strat- cbs sold fender but not the USA factory so there was a period where they only had the Mexico and japan factories. This was a really weird time for fender guitars

Ah, no way. Yeah, from what I've read they went through a bit of a strange period, as nearly every company does at some point I guess. Fingers crossed that the fact they came out the other side so well gives hope to other (similar...) companies experiencing issues...!

Buck And Evans I’ve got to say though, that guitar sounds and looks like it plays really nicely; as does my dad’s candy apple strat

I have a 91 62 RI strat and 92 Ibanez both made at Fuji Gen. The quality on both is crazy good. I bought the Ibanez new in 93 but just got the Strat last year. The strat is easily my favorite, best sounding, and most comfortable guitar. Didn’t even realize my Ibanez was built a year later in same factory until I got the strat. I keep saying my Ibanez but I gifted it to my 12 year old daughter last year❤️
