@@richardgray8593 A demand for 'sardines' has already began as it's also a 'new' fad for fasting. Also due to draught in EU we get Olive Oil prices soaring as well.
I am fully immersed in the tin fish rabbit hole and I have found the leader 😭. I love your videos! I just got my box from Dan and can’t wait to open and review it like you.
Definitely glad you've decided not to give up sardines. You don't see much garfish out there on the shelves. It'd be tough on the channel if you had to review the same can week after week ;)
Yep, I can't remember having seen cans of these anywhere. I know $15 is a bit steep but I might treat myself on my birthday, or when I had guests over.
Mind Blown ! So metallic, so beautiful. I liked how you referred to the Holy Espanaler sauce as “salad”. Great music. Round tin in a square box always feels very sophisticated. Thanks Matt
The racing stripe on the side is called the lateral line or lateral line organ. It’s a sensory organ used to detect movement, vibrations and pressure changes
👀 I don't like sardines and don't even know how I ended up here but the level of passion going into this review made me look at the entire video and maybe, just MAYBE is making me question if I should try sardines at 40yo because I had decided that I didn't like them as a young child maybe my taste has changed 😂
Hi, I'm not rly a fish enthusiast, but I really recommend you trying it in some form ! It doesnt have to be Sardines really, but maybe google for some fish that doesnt go all out on the fish taste ;) And as a german I have to recommend: If you could someohow get real bread( not whitebread), smear some butter on it, dont forget the pepper and enjoy a hearty snack )
The first canned fish I ever had came to me by accident. I was at a nice Mediterranean restaurant and I ordered some mackerel off the menu. The guy comes out and he gives me a plate with bread, hummus, olive oil, and a can of Ramón Peña horse mackerel. I was confused, and slightly grossed out by it, but I'd had a few beers at that point and I was pretty hungry, so I gave it a try. It was delicious! I was hooked from then on. On canned fish in general, and Ramón Peña stuff in specific.
Caught my first fish' it was a garfish at Long Jetty Tuggerah lakes, NSW early 1970s. The central coast in those days was the playground of Sydney siders a great place to go on summer holidays.
I would like to recommend you something I just found. It is swedish smoke roe pate with dill. If you can get hands on one you will be pleased. I found them in the lidl store. But they are not staple so idk if can get it in USA but it is like drug. Your videos make me happy to watch, it is like Jesus advertise how to eat. This is food for humans son 😁
I just got my second box from Dan yesterday! I just need to thank you! Opening tinned fish is like Xmas! I never would have known the glory without your coaching! WOW
Why don’t you try some? They’re cheap and truly exquisite in their own way. You can get fancy with vegetable crackers, sliced tomato, most cheeses and a balsamic vinegar reduction!. It’s what the rich people eat at parties to be sophisticated and is still cheap as hell.
Mateo is a deenz-nut, I'm a deenz-nut, we're all deenz-nuts! However, this was fun as like you I've never tried (or seen?) garfish in a can - at least in the class of establishment I habitually shop in. Maybe I need to move upmarket? More vids on weird and wonderful fish and crustaceans, please!
WHERE DO I GET A SET OF THOSE SUPER WOMBAT SKINNY TIP CHOPSTICKS!!!!! I swear I've looked every where on line but negative nada nyet. On another note...now I gotta gotta gotta get my butt scratchers on some Ramon Pena's. I am bereft of their culinary fish charms. And those gar look fantastic. On still another note, that "racing stripe" is called a lateral line of which most fish have. It is very pronounced on fish such as snook as an example. I am so stoked after watching this video flick. Mahalo to you oh kung fu master of tinned fish!
I wouldnt eat them, but some of the best times I've had fishing, was sitting on the bank of the Mississippi at night, with a small fire and a few brews, using worms and light-up bobber to catch river gar. They fight like no ones business.
Definitely going to try to garfish. I used to see them in the Great Lakes all the time, but maybe not the same fish. On the olive oil, if it's a good quality olive oil, I always add some hot sauce, herbs, and/or vinegar and finish up the oil with some sourdough bread. Almost as good as the fish.
I had Garfish yesterday for the first time. I picked up the tin in Porto with a wide variety of other fish, brands, preparations. So far, the garfish have been my favorites. Portuguese sardines are too scaly for me.
I wanted some sardines so bad the other day. Made the mistake of getting them in water. Oh my gosh, they're fishy. I can't stand a fishy taste. I thought they'd be alright because they were from Poland. Don't eat any Asian sardines. But, no more water sardines, either. Good olive oil masks the fishiness. Oh well, anyway, I'm enjoying your show. Great and hilarious editing. Love you. 💋🎩🤔
It’s a beautiful fish. Slim, long and with phosphorescent bones. The common name in the Mediterranean is Zargana, Much more beautiful than the English ‘Garfish’
You sure had baby ones there. In sweden they are larger and down by spain the are huge. Adult fish have superb white flesh and green / turqoise bone color after cooking. My favorite fish.
the gar which we used to catch off southwest uk were a fun fish to catch. they were however green inside and coppery smelling. i forget how many bits were green from blood, flesh, bone, or all 3. for all their green and copperiness they were apparently good eating and realitively good bait. its something you catch during the heat of the day, so what are you going to do with it- throw it back- so i never actually ate one.
I have thrown back so many of those fish and/or used them for shark bait.. Never thought to eat them this way. Ill catch my own rather than pay $15 tho
Interesting, those does not have the green bones and are kind of small, maby its just the tail part of the fish in the can?... I get those alot when I fish trout in the spring/summer, don't really care for them myself, I'll take one home to the cat occasionally tho, she loves them.

I just have to say that I really, really, enjoy the amount of effort you put into your videos. It is so well-executed it can feel subtle. Just amazing work, dude. 👏
They call it "garfish" but they are referred to as needlefish in Florida and Bahamas. Its really a pretty tasty fish, sometimes the flesh is slightly green colored too. They are kinda scavenger predators with lots of small needle like teeth....but they tend to only stay on the top 1-2 feet of water. When we would go fishing and cast out some bait, we would laugh at these fish making a quick run away from our boat chasing the bait before it fell further than 2 feet down and they didnt want to go get it anymore.
Not a garfish in the Southeast US, that's actually a needle nose saltwater species. Gar are extremely different with armor like scales - no kidding armor. I'm not saying you're wrong for marking it off, but you're reviewing a 3 ounce "garfish" to a 100+ lb. garfish (per your pictogram). Even the sizing on the chart dictates this. Love your vids man, but hit me up if you want to come catch and cook a real gar. I could be completely wrong if you could share your poster source.
The fish on the poster aren't to scale, the garfish look kinda big. It's a little weird that they call it a garfish, because they call it a "melone melone" over there. Needlefish too, like you said. I had to check the internet when I got this can because I was familiar with the freshwater gar we had in Georgia, and I was like "no way did some Spaniards fine this big fish out there and put it in a can"
I was born and raised in the middle of Illinois and if I fished behind a dam as a boy there would be dead gars left on the banks because fishermen thought that gars (those freshwater gars) needed to be extirpated. I believe that the eggs of those freshwater gars are toxic to humans. Not a caviar substitute! Maybe they get more respect now.
Aligator Gar is delicious. It makes for a great gumbo, good grilled fish, tasty fry. Just dont eat their poisonous eggs and grab some tin sheers to clean them.
The canned fish world was opened up to me by you Matt and I will be forever in your debt. Thank you!

good to know , we catch these garfish on the shoreline or off the rocks..they like like clear water too but they are hesitant to take the bait.
