    The Seekers were another great Australian folk pop band from the 60's. Judith Durham had such a beautiful voice. She just passed away recently. They had so many great hits including "Georgy Girl", "The Carnival Is Over", "A World Of Our Own", "Morningtown Ride", "Someday, One Day" etc. They have beautiful voices & harmonies. They don't make nostalgic music like this anymore. Reminds me of a simpler time.

    Judith Durham will knock your socks off. Smooth and powerful. No one sings like her. She has now gone from this world, but Australians love her without end. Recorded at Abby Road Studios, in London.

    As others have said, Georgy Girl is another big hit by them. Also, a beautiful, and sad song, The Carnival is Over. The three guys are all still alive, the Bass player, Athol Guy is 83, the 6-string player, Bruce Woodley, is 81, and the 12-string player, Keith Potger, who you thought was the youngest, is 82. Judith Durham, who died last year, was the youngest, dying at age 79.

      I remember crying , listening to "The Carnival Is Over" as a 15-year-old Boy in London as the 1960's decade was ending.
      Somehow,I must have, instinctively, realized the end of a wonderful decade that would never be surpassed imo.

    Judith had one of the finest singing voices in the world. She wrote and did a song called It's Hard to Leave" a heartbreaking song. This song was part of a TV special produced with color film. They had recorded this in the Beatles' home studio, Abbey Road, London. n November 1964, I'll Never Find Another You hit number 1 on the charts in Australia and the UK and number 4 in the USA.

    AB you wont be surprised with those harmonies The Seekers started out as a folk and gospel group, The Seekers - featuring the golden soprano voice of Judith Durham, and harmonies of Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Bruce Woodley ....Just as Soul music of the 60s and todate has its roots in Gospel . The Seekers sound too came from their deeply spiritual and religious beliefs . Judith RIP passed away in 2022 from broncial illness that she had suffered all her life.....The SEEKERS from Australia were flown to England in 1964 in the middle of Beatle Mania they became overnight superstars with huge record sales in the U.S and UK and Worldwide ....50 million records .

    This was a #1 hit in some countries, and top 5 in the US. for most people, they are known for this and one other song: "Georgy Girl". This is one thing that music sounded like in 1964. There were also things like "A Hard Day's Night" by The Beatles, "Don't Worry Baby" by the Beach Boys, "Under the Boardwalk" by The Drifters, "Where Did Our Love Go" by the Supremes, "Good Times" by Sam Cooke, and "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison.

    The Seekers might never have happened had the young Judith Durham, primarily a solo Jazz singer, not accepted an invitation to join the three guys she sang on and off with on a year-long cruise ship gig. Having arrived in England at the end of their first trip, they accepted some live engagements and made some recordings to fill in the time before the return trip. These went down so well that they were soon appearing on British TV, The cruise ship left for Australia without them.
    At one of their UK engagements they met a songwriter called Dion O'Brien, who had been mainly writing for his Folk/Country trio, The Springfields. But their lead singer, his sister Mary, was into Soul, R&B and Motown and had this crazy idea she could succeed as a White Soul singer. Maybe, he thought, these great-sounding Aussies would record his songs instead. He gave them this song, which was an instant success, followed by another and then another. The Springfields were evidently no more with no lead singer but he would continue to write for The Seekers using his adopted Springfields nom-de-plume, Tom Springfield while sister Mary seemed to be living her dream . . . as Dusty.

      Wow! Thank you for this information! The Seekers came on the scene when I was just a boy, and I had a really bad crush on Judith! Never knew the cruise ship story of how they came together. That's awesome! Also never knew the story behind one of my other favorite female artists -- Dusty Springfield! LOL! My favorite of hers is "I Only Want to Be With You."

    • @johnd8892
      @johnd8892 11 месяцев назад +1

      Actually the Seekers were established as a group for several years with Judith before the cruise ship.
      Several top selling Australian Albums that were even more folk oriented to their credit.
      This clip is from an Australian TV special "The World of the Seekers" that recreated their story so far. It is on RUclips. Around an hour long.

    • @way2deep100
      @way2deep100 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@johnd8892 Established maybe, since that's open to interpretation, but certainly not with Judith "for several years" since she only met Athol Guy in 1962, the year the boys evolved from The Escorts into The Seekers, and they were in England by May 1964. Judith was also pursuing a solo career in Australia, which is what I meant when I said she sang with the boys on and off. When she wasn't being a Seeker, she was singing lead with Frank Traynor's Jazz Preachers. Presumably The Seekers' unexpected success in Britain relegated her jazz singer aspirations to the back burner. What I have no facts to dispute is whether The Seekers managed to record several top selling albums in the brief period between their formation in '62 and their planned cruise trip residence in '64 or that these were with Judith, but the group's very existence with or without Judith "for several years" by early 1964 smacks of misrepresentation.

    • @johnd8892
      @johnd8892 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@way2deep100 Wikipedia confirms some of my memory :
      The Seekers consisted of Durham, Athol Guy, Bruce Woodley and Keith Potger, an ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corp.) radio producer. Through Potger's position the three were able to make a demo tape in their spare time. This was given to W&G Records, which wanted another sample of Durham's voice before agreeing to record a Jazz Preachers' album. W&G instead signed the Seekers for an album, Introducing the Seekers, in 1963. Durham, however, recorded two other songs with the Jazz Preachers, "Muddy Water" (which appeared on their album Jazz from the Pulpit) and "Trombone Frankie" (an adapted version of Bessie Smith's "Trombone Cholly").
      Key date was that Judith was active in the Seekers in 1963. Looks like W&G saw the key person in the group was Judith even though she was also recording for The Jazz Preachers at the same time for a little bit of time.
      A bit too vague of me to say several years but Introducing the Seekers was 1963 before they left on the trip and she was established as the major asset of the Seekers by those making the decisions before they left with the album to show for it at least. Even though she may have taken some convincing to make the trip.

    • @way2deep100
      @way2deep100 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@johnd8892 So we're pretty much in agreement. In the same year "Introducing the Seekers" was released, W&G also put out "Judy Durham" (WG-E-1706), a four-song EP recorded with Frank Traynor's Jazz Preachers. Perhaps they were prescient enough to realise that the Seekers would become massive in a way Judith singing Jazz and Gospel might not. But I think it's fair to say that, whatever anyone else's opinion, Judith was neither a committed Seeker nor Preacher at that time and, had the Seekers bombed in Britain and continued as cruise ship entertainers for the remainder of their contract, she would have been back in the jazz clubs actively pursuing her first love just as she had before her overseas adventure.

    Judith Durham (RIP) was just an amazing singing, and adorable too. They showed them doing a golden-oldie special and Judith looked just the same as she did in this video. Many know their songs from movies and listening to the radio, but not realize exactly who The Seekers really were, which is a shame. Their "Geogy Girl" was probably their most known song and used in a number of movies and TV shows.

Talking about the UK. They were Australia’s first international Superstars and still hold the record for the largest live performance in the Southern Hemisphere with a crowd over 200K.

      Although this was from an Australian 1968 huge rating TV special. It was a recreation of their career so far so they recreated the key 1964 recording session.
      The Nine TV network went to the extra expense of having this special filmed in colour. Lucky for us as videotape was no where near this quality until many years later. Anything with high quality colour from this era was on film as of course were all colour movie releases back to the thirties like Gone With The Wind.
      Australia never got to see this in colour on TV since we did not get colour TV until 1974.

    Not only made No. 1 but kept the Beatles and the stones from No.1. Judith Durham one of the great female voices of the 60s through to 2000s. Also the guy in the middle Bruce Woodley was the unacknowledged co-writer of many Paul Simon hits. He received royalties due but Simon refused to allow his name in song writing credits.

    Heck, they had technicolor filming clear back to the early 1930's, lol. It was a more primitive form though being a 2 color process so that everything was a shade of red or green or combined as a brown, but I know they were using the 3 color process as early as 1939 from films like The Wizard of Oz, The Adventures of Robin Hood and Gone With The Wind. Before that they did have color films but they were tinted frame by frame by hand and weren't very well done, but for what they were working with they were passable.

    The Seekers are another iconic group from the 60's, with many great hits; l would recommend you react to I Am Australian by The Seekers from their Final Farewell Concert 2019.

    In 1966, The Seekers recorded Georgy Girl as the title song for the movie of the same name; it became one of the most recognizable and profitable songs for the Australian pop/folk group. It reached No.1 in Australia and the United States, and No.3 in the UK; it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, but the prize went to Born Free(sung by Matt Monro).

    Back then anything from Frank Sinatra to the Beatles & the Supremes could end up a hit in the pop charts , & played on pop radio stations. There were loads if different & diverse sounds to hear in the record charts in the 1960 ‘s .

    May I suggest that you listen to their song "I am Australian", to me (at least) it is their best song.

    I was a teenager then, and I had a terrible crush on Judith Durham. A young man back then had three channels on TV, and the radio was much more important than it is now.
