I'm a 60 year old male who has been suffering with back pain for 35 years. For the first ten years I dealt with a stiffening problem in my lower right side of my back which latter developed into a tricky back problem. Without warning, while standing up from a sitting position or swinging a golf club I would get this rip and burn sensation in the lower back. This was followed by increased stiffness, swelling and pain in the lower back that would leave me pretty much bed bound for the next 48 hours. I went to a traditional chiropractor for many years who would "crack my back" but really didn't advise me on how I can correct the problem. Recently I tried a sports chiropractor who told me he would help me learn ways to fix my problem. Unfortunately, he didn't attack the root cause of the problem and actually caused more exacerbations of my back problem leading me to discontinue treatment. I soon after came upon this video that addresses the QL muscle and while experiencing back stiffness decided to give it a try. Within minutes of lying on tennis ball and preforming the recommended stretch exercises, I began to feel much better. In the week since I've been applying the opener and ballerina stretches and my back feels so much looser. I will start strengthening exercise tomorrow. Thank you Dr. Rowe for this post. I only wish I came across this advice 20 or so years ago.

What is it you are a QL on both sides? My pain is only on one side and it’s spasming from the QL. The feeling I have is a pulling downward on my last rib, which causes pulling down of my rib cage, which causes scapula issues which is inhibiting those muscles and the levator and the upper traps are cranking on my neck, left side only. May I ask what your symptoms are and how you’re doing?

I've had varying degrees of chronic pain in my QL since I was a kid. I just turned 37 yesterday. I have watched hundreds of videos over the years on how to 'fix' it but nothing ever worked. It felt a little better but not 'gone'. Last night I found your video and you were the first person to explain that first step you did. When I got off the floor, I was almost in tears because the pain was gone!!! It obviously came back a little while later because everything is so jacked up down there... BUT... This is SO needed for myself and anyone else with a repeating SI joint injury. This exact muscle gets so weak and sore on my injured side. My best guess is that it's from years of compensating via bad posture to avoid SI pain. I also had double knee surgeries on that same side for torn lateral meniscus. This stretch is very pain relieving, along with the stretches suggested for SI joint pains. But! The key is the strengthening. The pain never goes away for good, because I can never get these muscles strong enough. I sit a lot for work, and my couch is horrible with zero lumbar or posture support. I can't wait to see what a month of these strengthening exercise can do.
    I'll report back!
As always, thank you kindly! I'll send a little YT thanks your way for a cold beverage! We very much appreciate you Dr. Rowe.

Wow. 30 seconds is right! Over the past 2 months I've had 2 episodes where I had to rely on the R part of rice to give my left hip/buttock/lumbar connection area and possibly sympathetically sartorius pain on the other side; a break (more than a week) to calm things down. Just today I reactivated the same problems in the left side hip/buttock/back and what I think is the sartorius of the right side. Doing some googling I found this video and ID'd the Quadratus lumborum as being more likely the problem than the psoas or the hip flexor.
I got to 2:26 in the video; stopped and looked around the house for a tennis ball and instead and possibly BETTER found one of those dryer balls. Then I put that under the area where the left buttock/lower back /L3-4-5-6 come together and rolled around on it about 6 times. FELT MUCH BETTER IMMEDIATELY. It's amazing! IS all healed etc.? NO but I can tell this routine is really going to help calm, quiet and de-enflame this area when I occasionally over-do it and give me thereby more time/space to figure out what exercise/movements are causing the irritation to begin with. Thank you So MUCH!

Hi Doc. I recently discovered your channel and am quite grateful. I had 3 SP in cervical spine x2y for traumatic Central Cord Syndrome followed a year later with Anterior Spondylisthesis at L3-5. All were stabilized with fixed hardware. Strangely, I developed Lateral Pelvic Tilt with leg length discrepancy shortly after the Spondy repair. PT, Chiro adjustments, dry needling etc have not improved my gait, pain, balance issues etc. I have been using your QL prrogram for about a week with remarkable improvement. I have a measurable improvement in space from 11th rib to iliac crest also. Amazing! Many thanks. Sending link to your channel to everyone on my care team. Many thanks!

It is great on your butt and believe it or not on the bottom of your feet. You roll that ball on the arch of your foot and it’s heaven! Thank you so much Dr!

I just seen this quadrature lumborum relief exercise video...ive been having trouble since this time last year when I had covid coughed and my lower back on both sides I could feel give way a lot of pain followed it took me to the ground for a bit continues coughing done more damage it lasted for months finally at Christmas it just started getting there and I got sick throwing up and my right side gave way again. I started walking many kms but always pulling up sore and at work the end of everyday and always sitting in my car. I'm determined to always learn ways to better help myself as I've been to physio and had massage work too and stretch as much as possible then I stumbled on this video very helpful and the best stretches I've seen ...Thanks Dr Rowe for sharing what can help lots of people with this pain...cheers Anthony
