I started playing this game at age 8. Ended this game at age 13. I literally played it entire summer/winter vaccs. 2, 4 5 6,10 hrs. Someday even with my dad. We couldn't save this game so 1 have to start with level 1 everyday. Didnt knew about flute and anchor as well. Thia game meant a lot to me...for me its memories.
Its more like playing the game zoomed in x1000 loosely, I didnt understand it initially but they use save states and frame by frame button inputs and then “play” the outcome at regular speed. Sorry i just noticed your comments are years old.
If you fall with high speed at the right angle, you can go through the block like that. It gives you a small boost to do, so it was used as many times as possible in the run.
Here's a list of things you didn't explain that I noticed and would like explained: In 3-Fortress (10:04) you go through the door you come out of immediately to go straight to the Boom Boom room. That's not normally the door you use. In 4-4 (16:28) You deliberately slow down and make extra jumps that seem to make it take longer to get in the pipe. (You might also want to explain why you used the P-wing here, but I assume it's because of the water.) In multiple castles, including 4-Castle (17:39), you seem to do something (jumping?) that screws up the initial music. How does that work? In 5-Fortress-2 (23:52) you go through the wall. While it's obvious why you do it (as it lets you skip to the Boom Boom room), I think it would be a good place to explain wall walking and ejection. What lets you into a wall, and what makes it eject you the wrong way? (Unlike SMB1, you aren't facing the opposite way.) And why don't you do it lower so that you will drop out earlier and be able to run? Wall jumps would probably also be a good thing to discuss, like in 6-9 (29:45). I know it's basic, but so is what the items do that the Princess gives you.
3-F1: That is done by entering the door again in midair, 1 frame timing. Exactly why it takes you to Boom Boom, I don't know. 4-4: The P-wing was used to be able to keep P-speed through the end part of the level, and after the pipe. Something that isn't doable if you would have achieved P-speed at the beginning without a wing. The jumping in the end was faster than to accelerating your speed in the water, which is very slow. But for longer distances, it's faster to swim. Castles: The jump at the very beginning? You have a 2 frame window to make a jump at the start, that's all there is to it really =P. 5-F2: To be able to do that clip you need to have a ceiling. When you duckjump and land on the walljump pixel (Every 16th pixel), Mario will automatically stand up. And because his head will then be stuck inside the wall, you'll go through it. The game has just been programmed to eject Mario to the right instead of left, possibly because you are normally going from left to right. Might be a deeper explanation in the code though. And for the walljump itself: When you have enough speed, Mario can slightly clip into a wall. He'll normally just be pushed out again without anything special happening. Walls are made out of 16x16 pixel blocks, normally, and when Mario clips into a wall and lands on that block, the game will think that Mario is standing on the block for one frame, before you are eject back again. And during that frame you are able to execute a jump. I hope that answers your questions. And I would love to answer more stuff about the game/run as well!
Tompa A Thank you so much for the explanations! Is there any way they can be added to the commentary on the video itself? That's really what I was hoping for. Heck, I already know how walljumping works, but I thought other people might not. Also, does the input file have comments in it, too? Because I saw an HD encode (i.e. using hq4x filtering and stretching it to widescreen) where it seemed like the commentary was coming from the emulator itself. (All messages from the emulator were displayed on screen in this version.) The reason I ask is that I think the comments were different, and explained more. (I didn't watch it completely, so it might have just been a different run). I'm a big fan of commentary, as it helps me better understand the run, meaning I enjoy it more. It's a lot easier than what I used to have to do, which was pause the video every so often and read the Author comments from TASVideos.org.
ZipplyZane Yes, the input file got these comments as well. I don't feel like adding new explanations to this run, in the video, would be worth it though. It's so old and a new version of this run, as well as a 100% run, are being worked on by Lord Tom and I. We'll be sure to add in detailed explanations in those ones :).
ZipplyZane It is pretty much All Stages, skips in them will be used however. All levels will be started and finished. As a comparision, here is the real time WR: www.twitch.tv/kirua/c/4005230. The TAS is currently at level 6-F1-.
@@TompaA Its that they dont understand what "tool assisted" even means... Maybe a more apt description, like "programmed run performed by a computer", or something.
And it's actually best to grab the wand at the lowest area because it adds on your current position as well as height which adds on unneeded frames and slightly decreases time (In a +3 seconds way.)
TAS stands for Tool Assisted Speedrun. It's a run recorded with an emulator by slowing down the game as much as possible and use save states and rerecordings. The idea is to push the game to its limits, trying to find out how fast it can be beaten with 100% perfection. If the input for this run would be used on console, you would get the same exact result. Any specific areas for the P-speed where it is kept even though "it shouldn't"?
When you make a TAS you load up the game with an emulator. With the emulator you use various tools, mainly Frame Advance, which let's you record the input frame by frame (often 60 frames/second) and Save States to fix up errors you make in the progress. So it isn't a bot playing the game and the tools used are to find out how fast a game can be beaten with perfection. If the input used in a TAS would be used on console, the same result would be given. You can learn more on the website TASvideos.
World 7 was too hard for me. I just started over and used warp whistles to get to World 8. Beat the game but with my sanity largely removed. In-fact one run (when I was MUCH younger) had me ignore the 1-3 warp whistle and get the second warp whistle I needed from the World 2 secret section. That allowed me to grab a P-wing Message from the Princess to use on the stage with all the little ships/platforms.

Not true it takes between(4-6)to kill Bowser with Hammer Bros. Suit. And it takes about 15 with Fire power/plant.
RUclips puts resolution to the closest standard presets, but if it's above 1080p (eg 2K or 4K), it's labelled as original (original resolution).
