In Mario kart 8 the blooper actually reduces your traction if you’re hit by it. It’s not much but it can actually be a big deal especially when playing 200cc. And even on some of the harder 150cc tracks such as neo bowser city it can be super annoying
It does but only on track that doesn’t have slippery off road on track that has slippery off road the blooper gives u traction and u can get rid of the blooper easily by entering water with a trick boost or a water fountain like on coconut mall
@@silokhawk true I really want Nintendo to scrap that item and bring back the fake item box since they scrapped it every one wants the fake item box to replace to be in the coin place and I hope they bring back the mega and pow and just scrap the blooper item entirely.
@@silokhawk ...are offensive items not all inherently annoying? Getting hit by a red, blue, or green shell is annoying no? And getting hit by... well literally any other offensive item.
For those looking for anything on Super Circuit, the only really notable thing is that Red Shells thrown backwards will track the next person who passes it, which makes Red Shells godlike in first. Same thing with the Blue Shell where if you throw it back it will then target the person in 1st place the next time they pass it.
Super circuit had a lot of interesting item ideas, even if some never came back or should have existed before. Red shells had good tracking for the first time, making them actually fun to use. Red and blue shells also couldn't hit you if you maintained 100% speed, allowing you to outrun the shell if you were skilled enough; you could even destroy red shells with a mushroom. Banana braking also returned from mk64, letting a skilled player bypass certain obstacles. Mushrooms also interacted with ramps in very interesting ways. The list is honestly quite impressive considering how basic the items look on the surface.
Just finished an SC playthrough myself, Red Shells in first were so amazing. If you get one late in the race you'd basically secure a win, because you could drop it behind you right before the finish to prevent any close calls. Honestly, the worst item in SC might be triple Greens. You can't toss them backwards, so they often ricochet right back into you if you try to get rid of it too quickly. I've gotten combo'd by my own shells so many times lmao
@@Wyatt_James as someone who's done extensive research on Super Circuit, not all ramps actually work with a mushroom. The notable tracks thar have this property are the bowser castle tracks. Not really anything special, just a neat fact.
Tbh if getting playable Blooper is what it takes to remove it from the item list, that's a sacrifice I'll happily take. Heck, I'll be a blooper main if that meant never having to deal with it again.
I still don't know how the Blooper item has survived to this day. It's both annoying in an underwater level in a Mario platformer AND annoying for the player who gets it in Mario Kart
Not to mention it's the only item to break the 4th wall. All of a sudden I go from feeling like I'm driving a kart to feeling like I'm just watching a kart on a camera. It pulls you out of the racing experience.
@@BoardGamesBricksHobbiesthe whole camera thing was already apparent though. On some tracks you can see lens flares, and on one track, (I forget which one) you can see rain running down the screen.
Another thing about the blooper is that on Mario Kart DS, it is extremely easy to play the game on the lower screen, completely unaffected by the blooper
In 8dx the coin being in your first slot GUARANTEES a defense item in your second slot (banana, shell, horn) so it’s not completely useless. It also prevents the boo from stealing your defense in your second slot by stealing the coin.
@@A.P122 Yeah that's the main point of coins. If you ask me, they should also increase your weight slightly so the more coins you have the less you're bumped off-course by opponents.
Another bad thing about goldens is that because theyre on a timer they prevent you from getting other potentially better items and also from using a 2nd item if youre playing 8 deluxe.
Honestly if the golden shroom was reworked to work like the thunder cloud (as in, a more controllable passive speed boost while active, but can be snatched by others if careless) I think itd be a lot more interesting. That way you could still pick up other items whilst benefitting off of it without it being too powerful. And unlike the modded thundercloud, it wouldnt be this weird mishmash of perks (at least i think theyre a bit of a mess)
@@splaturials9156 it's the whole item snatch aspect thatd make it mediocre isnt it? Could probably just have it be passive in general then without that mechanic.
Oh my gosh I hate it. Whenever I feel a shock coming (or worse, see someone with it) I desperately mash to get to a better item even though mashing doesn't actually speed up the process. Not to mention the red shells I could've avoided. This is why I like Triple Shrooms so much more. You have way more control.
Thunder cloud makes you faster which unless you are far behind, you can use it to catch up and infect someone once you are ready, meaning you can rush down someone only to infect them after they could in a good place, meaning although it is bad for you, it can be beneficial when you combine both it’s uses into a dangerous combo
Yeah you could do that...but that opportunity doesn't actually come up in races. Or at least, it rarely does. More often you're just too far away from anyone to pass it, or your opponents are lagging so much you can't hit them if you tried.
7:31 Funnily enough, Silok's suggestion that they should make your own bomb explosion not hurt you has already been implemented in Mario Kart Tour. And it's not just for bombs either, it applies to pretty much any explosion, like from blue shells or explosive barrel obstacles if you hit them with your own item Hopefully this feature will be carried onto the next game
Thundercloud redesign/redemption: Make it a lower place item, like around the Star or Golden Mushroom. It keeps its speed and acceleration benefits to the user. It periodically shocks other players if nearby, not the user. It cannot be stolen. Immunity to lightning.
@@miimiiandco yes, and it wouldn’t forcibly boost you forward either, so if you smuggle it, you could still drop out of first when the Blue Shell comes.
correction: in mk8dx, both your placement and distance from 1st are taken into account when determining item distribution. no matter how tight or spread out the pack is, 9th place can recieve shocks, goldens, and stars
The fake mushroom seems like such a good idea because unlike item boxes, they actually do appear randomly through the course, tbh I don't know how exactly they work, but having a fake mushroom would be way more convincing the some suspicious item box in the middle of the road by itself. Even the n64, though very well hidden, can still be obvious if you know where items are supposed to be.
fibs were useful in mkwii for blocking shortcuts, mainly the one on n64 bowser's castle, as it covered the shortcut, unlike the banana. It also made the karts completely stop instead of spinning out
Actually, here's an idea. Make the fake item box return, but also make it "evolve" as the race progresses. So for instance if you place it down during lap 1 it'd just be a fake item box, but as it stays on the ground it transforms into another fake item. With maybe the double dash tell of the item taking on a distorted appearance while close. Imagine seeing a star in the distance and b-lining for it, only for you to realize too late that said star turned into a fake Ztar instead. Or the fake mush example you gave. Imagine how paranoid people would be of items on the track.
I think what would need to be done to make FIBs more effective, would to make most maps have item blocks spawn at truly random locations. Like gimic reasons for it such as blimps dropping them, blocks washing ashore from the ocean, and more potentially creative ideas. Then when a player sees a block that is not in a familiar place, there is less of a reason to be suspicious.
@@frozenburst64 Honestly that could definitely work, but might be a bit too track dependant at that point. And I'm not sure if it wouldnt feel a bit too out of place for a bunch (if not all) tracks to suddenly have a dedicated random box section or two
@@silokhawk Ooooh ok Yeah fair enough. Im assuming it would've been a repeat of Super Mario Kart's section considering the items available in that game then
The thundercloud actually increases your speed and allows you to drive in off-road. The thundercloud would be good if they just removed the lighting that hits you and disables the fact that you could pass the thundercloud, so it would be like a ten second speed and off-road bonus, or just do what CTGP did and add the mega-mushroom bonus.
The Blooper is a shitter version of the coin since it pretty much does nothing to your opponents besides the screen obstruction and provides no advantage to you as the player when you're behind the pack.
@pinmgams3243 fake item boxes is basically a banana that can't protect you but has a bigger hitbox, they were way more useful than a coin since even if the fake item box can't block red shells you can lay it behind you to take the person behind you with you unlike the coin that just does nothing but screw you over since it doesn't provide a offense or a defense in any way.
The coin box in tour is actually really good, to the point where “coin boxers” were frequently meta characters. This is because keeping your combo going is crucial in Tour, and a lot of coins to not only raise your combo really high but also just to keep it going for a while is incredibly useful …the other cannons are pretty bad though, they’re too hard to hit and usually have minimal payoff. Especially compared to the multitude of much better items.
12:01 - I can confirm this happens, but not like this. If you use the leaf on a _dropped_ red shell (from a lightning hit), it'll start moving as if you had thrown it, so yeah, it'll target whoever is in front of you. Situational, but useful. And I always thought an easy way to buff the blooper was if it also blocked the victims from using items until the ink wears off; driving over items on the ground to use them would still be fine, and other ways to remove the ink would still work. IIRC, no item in the series ever did this, and at the very least, that would justify its usual placement on the item distribution, _especially_ if you chained it; imagine getting a good item right after using it and people in front literally can't do anything about it for a few seconds. It could be very disruptive if timed right
The problem that I had with leaf was that if you are too far ahead or behind, you just can’t use it and it’s a waste of an item and it’s timer usually lasted long enough for you to get the next item box while it’s still active so it effectively takes 2 items away from you.
Okay weird take, but the coin in MK8DX is a necessary evil of sorts and is, in my opinion, the best designed bad item. To start off, what differentiates the coin from items like the blooper or goldshroom is that you get coins the most while frontrunning. This was an issue in MK8 on Wii U because you only had one item slot. In Deluxe however, it's a slight bit more nuanced thanks to the double item slots you now have. Little known fact is that whilst holding a coin, you can not roll another coin, so if you get one as the sole item in your hands it can be best to hold onto it instead of using it immediately to ensure the next item box gives you something actually useful. It doesnt change much, but it makes for a few interesting decisions such as weighing if it'd be better to go for a double item box that is usually in a disadvantageous position like the outside of a turn, or if itd be better to stay on the inside of a turn because you cant guarantee you wouldnt roll another coin on the double and because staying on the inside of a turn provides more of a lead. However, that alone doesnt make it the "best" worst item in my eyes. If it was just that, I'd 100% agree the coin holds no value, neither for the player, nor for the game. Because yes, the reason I consider it """good""" and a "necessary evil" is because of an item that many players consider pretty great, but I myself consider pretty dubious for the game itself. The super horn. For the frontrunner in first place, its great because it takes care of your only real threat that penetrates any other defence, also known as the splue bell. For everyone else, it only makes it harder to actually catch up and, if the coin wouldnt exist, would stack the cards a bit too much in favor of 1st imo. It's already fairly easy to defend yourself against incoming shells so long as you always drag an item behind you, and since more adept players tend to be frontrunning more likely than new players, this could lead to 1st being safer than ever, if it wouldnt be for the coin. The coin exists to be the critical miss to the horn's nat 20. Now I'm not insane. I know that having ways to stop blues is not inherently bad and I know that the horn is far rarer than coins. Obviously just because this is how I read into it doesnt mean it even has to be what happened in the designers' heads when coming up with it, and nor does it make things feel better whenever you do roll a coin in first. I myself think the coin is quite annoying in actual gameplay. However, I say this as that person in the friendgroup nobody wants to play mario kart with because I stomp everyone else if it wouldnt be for item rng. Being vulnerable in first place is important and without the coin existing I'd bet people would get disheartened quicker because like I just said the horn just kind of makes it even easier to maintain your lead. It's why I personally prefer the coins existance over the horn and think that in this one instance, there's an actual thoughtprocess that went into why it even exists that was at least more carefully considered than something like the thunder cloud that just punishes struggling players for no reason. All this being said, I would not miss the coin if it were to be removed from the series. As much as I want to nerd out about how the coin isnt all bad gamedesign wise, Im not gonna pretend like its a stellar item either. The fact that the only silver lining i could give for it is that theres another item they added that I personally think isnt well designed should clue you in on that. I just figured Id give some food for thought. With that out of the way, please just. Stop adding the blooper to every mario kart game. Or at least rework it. We dont need an item that is counterproductive to the entire reason why items even exist.
it's the case for every game with the blooper i think (not played 7), it's definitely the most noticable on DS though - the CPUs start zig-zagging on straightaways and slow down significantly. In Wii and 8/dx they do go slower and swerve a little bit but it's not quite as powerful obviously, this only affects CPUs, so bloopers are almost completely useless online
When I was younger I tricked myself into thinking that the fake item block was the only way to get the thundercloud in Wii Which now that i think about it, that would be cool; bring back the fake block and when you hit it, it gives you an intentionally bad item
If I could change the Blooper, I would’ve had it not cover up the screen but instead reverse your controls. Have the player turn right when the stick is held left and vice versa. I think they shouldn’t have made the items that Peach, Toad, Yoshi, and Bowser use in Super exclusive to them. I had the fun idea of Figure 8 Circuit from DS being redesigned to have the Thunder Cloud and fake Item Box as hazards that roam across the course. If the POW Block returned, it should be made a triple Super Horn.
A lot of the challenge of fake item boxes is also where you place it. If you put it in a suspicious spot, people won't try to get it, and if you put in the work to put it somewhere good, more people will try to get it. It makes it an interesting dynamic where you have to think if you want to get an item box or not.
Main thing with the super leaf is that, at least in my experience, it lasts too long. It would consistently last until right after the next item set, where people would wait and then throw items at you, and since you can't get another item with it active, you're left a sitting duck, whereas with any other item you could choose to drop it to get a new pull. Srb2kart has a "Grow" item (similar to the mega mushroom but much worse without mods) and by default it also doesnt let you pick up other items, but if you hild the item button you can get rid of it, they should have added this feature to the super leaf
CTGP-7 allows you to cut its duration that way. (I _think_ that was added to a 1.4 revision, but it may have been in late 1.3. Sadly, my memory's shot.)
The issue with the Super Leaf is that it's not actually a banana at its worst. At skilled play, let's say you hold the item and let yourself get hit with a red shell to break the leaf. You'll be left without an item for however long it takes until you get to the next item box, i.e., defenseless. In some cases you're lucky and that amount of time is very short, but better players know where all the item boxes are and can therefore time their red shell to hit you after an item cycle. To build on this, it's pretty common that people will wait for you to get a Leaf while fishing for double red so that they can get you through the single layer of defense. With a banana, you can hold it behind you and still pull for another item, which gives you two defenses. It's a huge deal in more skilled levels of play, to the point where pulling a leaf in first can singlehandedly lose you the game through putting you in a catch-22 situation. If you hold the Leaf (actually using the spin to deflect the shell as opposed to letting the shell destroy the Leaf), you'll be holding onto the Leaf for too long which'll lead you to lose out on the next item cycle (leaving yourself open to another red, if second place so happens to pull one from the item cycle and waits for your leaf to expire). If you trade the leaf with the red, you leave yourself open to another red before you're able to reach the next item cycle. There's no winning with the Leaf, it's a lose-lose situation.
I've always wished that they'd bring back the snes npc exclusive items, specifically bowser's fireball and peach/toad's poison mushroom as useable items
4:47 it's distance and placement based even if first place is miles ahead second place cannot get bullet bills shocks or golden mushrooms also if you are in 9th place or worse you cannot get things like piranha plants or most triple defense items 8:33 it doesn't do jack shit in mk8d because unlike previous games the blooper makes you slip more making some turns actually impossible
Another thing that makes the golden mushroom just awful, is that the timer makes you unable to get any other item while you have it, and any other item at that position is more useful. Stars are just objectively better, controllable speed boost, invincibility and leaves your item slot when used
I will say, the mushroom cannon and coin box are actually kind of really good in Tour. If your goal is to win the race or if those items were in another game, they could be the worst items, but in Tour, you could make an argument that getting a high score is more important than winning the race (although winning the race does give you more points), and the mushroom cannon, and ESPECIALLY the coin box are some of the best items at giving you more points. Like if you take a mushroom, it will give you one more point once, but with a mushroom cannon, you can get one more point for every mushroom you manage to run into.
The Blooper blocking your screen with the ink is the worst thing happens to every Mario Kart racers, next to the Blue Shell hits you so hard that you went to last place.
the blooper could be upgraded by it tracking down your next opponent and it would then create a puddle of ink in front. this puddle would briefly slip up whoever touches it and it also makes the tyres of whoever touched it slippery, just as blooper does currently. the puddle would disappear upon being touched.
4:45 Common misconception is that it's still kind of based on placement Some items no matter how far away/close you are they will still be items impossible to get Second for example can under no circumstances get a bullet bill even if first is two laps ahead Mainly just said this for the sake of the fun fact
As soon as I saw the video title, I knew this was the kind of video where Silok just really wanted to talk about this specific topic. That always makes the video way better when the creator actually enjoys their niche topic.
Right?! The video was so funny, I laughed a lot at the jokes. Not that his videos are usually boring, it is just that this one felt particularly hilarious. And also his laugh at 12:48 feels so genuine and contagious.
At the very least, the coin in 8DX makes it so you can set up a coin as the item for a Boo to take, leaving your protection unscathed if you always have a second item on hand. On the other hand, the Piranha Plant is a terrible item that is best demonstrated with an anecdote: Picture Super Bell Subway, you just got Mario-karted on the 3rd lap, and you're approaching the last item set of the race in 12th place. In order to salvage anything in this race, you'll need these items to bring home the bacon, a shock most definitely. Now imagine the item set gave you a shock, but as the second item. And guess what the first item was? Couldn't use the shortcut, spamming the plant didn't use it up by the time the race ended, last place sealed by the Piranha Plant without a chance to use the shock. Stupid plant.
The leaf can redirect red shells that have been dropped. You could view it as rednshells are fragile when theyre in motion, so when they're stationary they dont break when a tail hits them
Modded wii actually has a "Mega cloud" which is same as the original, except it megas you, instead of shrinking you (obviously); a 'more balanced mega mushroom' if you will, and I think most would enjoy this concept in a possible MP9
Thunder Cloud debuted in Arcade GP, it was simply a item to slow you down and it’s effect was shocking your tires. That item had other variants like the Rain Cloud giving you a slippery effect and the Ice Cloud freezing your steering.
The Fake Box in wii is still multicolored from far away, still changing to red when approaching like in Double Dash. The only difference between it in Wii and Double Dash is it being able to be held behind you, despite shells still going through it. (Also the wiki claims it is slightly bigger, but I will have to check later.) You can see it being multicolored at 2:48 when Baby Mario drops the item, it is multicolored before fading to red.
Thanks for the info! When he said that it didn't change in wii, I was like WTF yes it does, but I still wasn't sure if it was just my memory fooling me. It's nice to have confirmation of something.
maybe it is multicolored in wii because i did notice it changing to red in the timestamp you provided, but i personally never really noticed that it was multicolored when playing the game myself. maybe it just changes to red way too early giving you way too much time to react or something also it should just always stay multicolored imo, no reason for it to be red at all
@@TheLoginatoR I definitely do agree it should always be multicolored. The only place it should show up red is in the item roulette, so it’s more easily discernible as a fake item box.
Ehhhh... I don't really mind the item as it is in MKWii. I did remember it changing a bit earlier than in DD!! but not by much. And even then, the best use of the item is for a surprise backthrow since it stalls longer than a banana or a green. But that's just me. I don't mind much of the items, even the blooper.
The fake item box is pretty noticeably larger than normal item boxes in Wii. Even without the red colour, it'd be quite easy to tell a fake from a real from a distance.
In 8 the coin lets you protect your second item from boos + assures you to have smth else than a coin in your 2nd slot since you can't have 2 coins at the same time
When it comes to Mario kart 8 dx, I hate the flower items as they're all annoying items in the game. The Piranha plant is a little awkward to use, the boomerang flower since you get three uses of it and my aim isn't always good, I either get someone or I don't. Then if I don't get rid of it quick enough, it comes back when I get a double box. Then the fire flower. Hated it in 7 it's no better here. Constant spam with it online. That and since it's on a timer, it's soooo sloooow! You either use it or hope a boo steals it or the shock takes it out. Unlike Mario platformers, I hate the fire flower in Mario kart it needs to vanish!! 😡
In Mario Kart Tour, the blooper is really useful and one of the best items thanks to the combo system, since using it makes a delayed "hit" that helps you keep an ongoing combo during a flat section with not much tricks or coins to take Unless they bring back that system it should be removed from the game though
Honestly at this point, why not just lean into that aspect more and get rid of the screen obstruction. That'd make for a far more interesting item. If any of y'all played tf2 with the rtd plugin on a server, theres this effect called "drunk walk" that (depending on plugin version) makes you swerve around and randomly speed up or slow down while walking. They could turn the blooper into something similar to that instead, making your traction slippery and fluctuating your speed randomly while hit by it. The only other change that may need to be done at that poing would be to make it a throwable item, since doing that to like half the players ahead of you would be insane.
@@uppercutts It's very noticeable to me. Even on 150 you'll have to like take turns a different way because your lines won't be as tight because of the slipperiness
Rolling a gold mushroom and a star from a double box in 8 feels terrible, because you're basically just waiting the timer out on the mushroom until you can get the same thing but with invincibility. There's plenty of times I've been hit by a lightning while waiting for the mushroom to time out.
i always thought itd be cool to combine the fake item box and thundercloud, where if u get the fake box instead of spinning u out it actually does give u an item but its the cloud (assuming the item boxes would actually be convincing in this version)
Okay, for the fake item block, I use it in a specific way. (On DS ofc) You hold onto it until u get to a cluster of item blocks and you drop it right after passing through an item block. Sure, you probably won't get any new items but it makes it harder to see depending on how good your timing was. Bonus points if you leave it around a blind corner or booster pad.
6:01 (technically 6:25) One thing I usually do with the Bob-Omb (at least in double dash. i don't remember if this quirk is in other games) is hold forward when throwing it. That somehow increases it's throwing distance by a substantial amount. For Example: (tested on Wario Colosseum on the Bloom Coach with Waluigi and Yoshi, in the middle of the last curved tile before the straight-away before the finish line.) a Normal Throw will only clear 4 tiles and land in the 5th. But holding forward before throwing will cause the Bob-Omb to clear 7 tiles and land in the 8th (which is almost the entire straight-away of that final stretch.) Doing this also extends the amount of time it takes for the bomb to explode, and by enough to not explode immediately when you reach it.
TBH, the Golden Mushroom has only grown more sour on me over time; especially with Triple Mushrooms being right there as a more tactical power up that doesn't pressure you
Haven't watched the entire vid yet but i've got my pitchfork and torch ready in my wacky cartoon space pocket if you say a single bad thing about the thundercloud. That guy is God's gift to Mario Kart
My main problem with the thunder cloud is it's design, like, all items are somehow related to the Mario series or make it clear what they do. And then we have the Thunder Cloud, wich has nothing to do with the Mario series, nor shows what it does clearly, and not just that, but it makes you think it has something to do with the shock, wich is, you know, the best item in the game? What part of the TC makes you think you get a speed boost, a off road imunity, or that you can pass it? There is none. If they wanted a hot potato in Mario Kart, JUST MAKE IT A BATTLE MODE.
To be fair, its not like a bunch of the other items are innocent of this. Mushrooms for instance dont make you grow big just as one example. My main gripe is how it shows up as frequently as it does, within the positions that it does. It just punishes already struggling players. At least the modded version gives you an actually good benefit, even if I dont like the way that one works either.
@@nettalie4435 the Mushroom at least exists in the Mario universe and is a Power Up, but the Thunder Cloud? Also, yeah, the item itself has a lot more problems that are probably more important, but I just liked to point that out
@@brunolike8631 Okay fair point about the mushroom I'll admit, but what about the lightning bolt? Why would that shrink people? That also didnt exist in prior mario games (and if it did it certainly was never a prominent feature) What about things like the boo? They dont steal your powerups in the main series and arent even items. Blue Shells... I can kind of see a case for considering SMW for their flight, but they also just kind of explode without much indication which didnt happen in that game. Im not saying everything makes no sense, what Im trying to say is that things do follow cartoon logic more closely than just what they do in the main series. The thunder cloud for instance threatens to shrink you with lightning and you begin panicking as a result, making you faster (...somehow. Dont look into it too much its whacko world rules). What I would actually agree on is that the item as a whole is just a big mishmash of different seemingly random things. Afterall nobody is gonna analyze what the logic behind the thundercloud is in the moment, theyll instead be confused what is going on, between the item activating itself, playing an ❎Incorrect Buzzer sound, and them having a speed boost out of nowhere whilst also needing to pay attention to the rest of the racetrack.
The thing with Golden mushrooms is that when you get one you are stuck having it for a few seconds which is really bad for chaining items. But it is mostly bad cause if you have a bullet Bill, but it is in your second inventory slots, then you need to wait for the golden mushroom to end, as if like, three mushrooms could have been used instantly
I play mario kart 8 deluxe with my dad a lot, and the only item rule we ever use is custom items, only removing the blooper because it's just annoying and not fun. 100% Agree with the sentiment on this one
8:20 I think a great fix for the blooper would be to increase the amount of ink spots, the further you are in front. So 1st would have their screen almost entirely covered and last would only have a single ink spot.
My case for the bomb being a good item is the Single banana, the bomb is a single banana with a much more effective forward offense, and a very strong rearward offense, just lacking the blocking ability.
You really went over some agreeable points about MK as a whole! Can't wait to see what items they add to that teased "MK Ultra" everyone's talking about!
oh, what you said about "auto-steering" reminded me of a video where a group of "Twitch chat" users were trying to steer ONE cart, and their opponent was a cart with auto-steer on, the accelerate button held down, and NO other inputs, kind of like those old "Luigi wins by doing nothing" vids. and yes, it WAS Luigi in that second cart.
If I had to rework a few of the items talked about here, here's what I'd do. -For the Fake Item Box: Bring it back to its old design in 64, and give it the ability to replace Item Boxes if you drive into one while holding it in your item slot. Alongside the tell, I feel like a big problem with the item is due to the fact that item boxes are always in rows, Fake Item Boxes stand out a lot when out in the open. With this ability, you can use the Fake Item Box to better trick other racers, and possibly even block off alternate routes if there's an Item Box there. I would keep its inability to block items however, as I'd prefer it serve the role as the "Make 1st place worse" item over the Coin, cause the coin is lame. -For the Blooper: I'd rather remove it but if we were going to keep it, at least give it a more substantial effect. Make it so the ink makes your kart harder to control, causing racers to slide around more, or maybe even reverse your controls. It'd be annoying but at the very least there'd be something that the user can take advantage of. -For the Thunder Cloud: I like the hot potato aspect and the fact that you want to avoid it at all times, I'd just rework it into an offensive item. Throw it, it acts as a Red Shell, and whoever gets it has the effect. Alongside that, rather than the speed up, I think it'd be cool if it instead forced auto-acceleration on the player. That way, that player just can't brake and try and get anyone behind them, and makes it less likely it'll transfer back to the user. I'm not as sure about this one in particular, but I thought it'd be an interesting rework.
@@SquidSystem Oh yeah I know. But it doesn't feel like enough that the change is noticeable, at least when playing it yourself. If they want to keep it in the game they should at least make it more annoying.
I've never been affected by the blooper but ever since the BCP it felt like the blooper is the strongest item. Really goes to show how much you memorize a track after a decade of playing on em
I love how the defense for this item is that they made it even more annoying lol
I hate that I know this cause I had no idea before, and now I cannot forget it.
Shoutouts to the Piranha Plant item being able to eat the Blooper.
Fr bro is a lifesaver 🔥
I don’t like the piranha plant but I respect it just because it can do that
It can? XD
Seriously? Damn.
Yeah, some ramps just suck. It's unfortunate but they are the minority.
@@Wyatt_JamesThat's actually a really cool feature, especially blue shells. I hope this becomes a feature in the next Mario Kart.

Next mario kart video he'll edit in a segment of him making fried calimari. Mark my words.
He was talking about the coin and left it in. Not even the topic of the video changing 6 minutes ago will stop the Blooper hate.
Tbh if getting playable Blooper is what it takes to remove it from the item list, that's a sacrifice I'll happily take. Heck, I'll be a blooper main if that meant never having to deal with it again.
Wow that's really messed up, not sure it was worth breaking it's legs over
The blooper is cute though
I still don't know how the Blooper item has survived to this day. It's both annoying in an underwater level in a Mario platformer AND annoying for the player who gets it in Mario Kart
Not to mention it's the only item to break the 4th wall. All of a sudden I go from feeling like I'm driving a kart to feeling like I'm just watching a kart on a camera. It pulls you out of the racing experience.
I can't even feel any emotions towards the blooper unlike the chain chomp or lightning.
@@BoardGamesBricksHobbiesthe whole camera thing was already apparent though. On some tracks you can see lens flares, and on one track, (I forget which one) you can see rain running down the screen.
kick kick kick kick high kick toe
Rhythm Heaven(WarioWare cameo) name and pfp, very nice taste (I agree too)
Another thing about the blooper is that on Mario Kart DS, it is extremely easy to play the game on the lower screen, completely unaffected by the blooper
Tbh that’s what was kind of cool about the blooper specifically on ds
Same with DS
This also applies to 7
MKWii Deluxe chabged the blooper so it covers almost the entire screen, making it very difficult to drive.
In 8dx the coin being in your first slot GUARANTEES a defense item in your second slot (banana, shell, horn) so it’s not completely useless. It also prevents the boo from stealing your defense in your second slot by stealing the coin.
I think it also increases your top speed too
It does@@A.P122
@@A.P122 Yeah that's the main point of coins. If you ask me, they should also increase your weight slightly so the more coins you have the less you're bumped off-course by opponents.
The same applies if there was no coins.
I'd rather have 2 defensive items then a coin and a defensive item.
Just recently, I got a Super Horn and a Coin from a double box. The Super Horn was in the first slot, and a Boo stole it the *frame* I saw what it was
9:25 he's onto us boys, we gotta scram
@@nettalie4435the golden isnt that powerfull at all now
@@splaturials9156 it's the whole item snatch aspect thatd make it mediocre isnt it?
Could probably just have it be passive in general then without that mechanic.
Oh my gosh I hate it. Whenever I feel a shock coming (or worse, see someone with it) I desperately mash to get to a better item even though mashing doesn't actually speed up the process. Not to mention the red shells I could've avoided. This is why I like Triple Shrooms so much more. You have way more control.
It's good on Dry Dry Desert though, you basically don't have to drive on the road at all
Thunder cloud makes you faster which unless you are far behind, you can use it to catch up and infect someone once you are ready, meaning you can rush down someone only to infect them after they could in a good place, meaning although it is bad for you, it can be beneficial when you combine both it’s uses into a dangerous combo
I think it also allows you to take shortcuts that a Mushrom allows you to as well.
Yeah you could do that...but that opportunity doesn't actually come up in races. Or at least, it rarely does. More often you're just too far away from anyone to pass it, or your opponents are lagging so much you can't hit them if you tried.
Isn't the speed boost something like 5% or something? If they wanted it to be more high risk high reward I feelyhey should've upped it a bit
@@pageclayton6850yeah but you get off-road immunity and high acceleration as well (basically star power effects minus invulnerability)

Which yeah it's totally the blooper
I'd say it's between Blooper and Thunder Cloud.
7:31 Funnily enough, Silok's suggestion that they should make your own bomb explosion not hurt you has already been implemented in Mario Kart Tour. And it's not just for bombs either, it applies to pretty much any explosion, like from blue shells or explosive barrel obstacles if you hit them with your own item
Hopefully this feature will be carried onto the next game
Stun items in Disney Speedstorm already use this gimmick
Thundercloud redesign/redemption:
Make it a lower place item, like around the Star or Golden Mushroom.
It keeps its speed and acceleration benefits to the user.
It periodically shocks other players if nearby, not the user.
It cannot be stolen.
Immunity to lightning.
So basically better Piranha Plant?
@@miimiiandco yes, and it wouldn’t forcibly boost you forward either, so if you smuggle it, you could still drop out of first when the Blue Shell comes.
In practice that would be a worse lightning since it will effect the people behind negatively while the people in 1st and 3rd don't get impacted.
@@Buglin_Burger7878 Kind of like a less defensive, more offensive star.
correction: in mk8dx, both your placement and distance from 1st are taken into account when determining item distribution. no matter how tight or spread out the pack is, 9th place can recieve shocks, goldens, and stars
That final statement is false. If you're close enough to first you'll only pull shrooms in 9th
Imagine it on a track like Maple Treeway or Riverside Park, no one would be suspicious because those tracks always have mushrooms.

It does slow down computer players
@@volvoman5262it barely does at all
That's why I think it should be a 1st place item, instead of something you get when you're behind.
Fake item box is also a shitter coin
@pinmgams3243 fake item boxes is basically a banana that can't protect you but has a bigger hitbox, they were way more useful than a coin since even if the fake item box can't block red shells you can lay it behind you to take the person behind you with you unlike the coin that just does nothing but screw you over since it doesn't provide a offense or a defense in any way.
The POW block is a significant threat on some corners, especially with custom tracks and 200cc.
The coin box in tour is actually really good, to the point where “coin boxers” were frequently meta characters. This is because keeping your combo going is crucial in Tour, and a lot of coins to not only raise your combo really high but also just to keep it going for a while is incredibly useful
…the other cannons are pretty bad though, they’re too hard to hit and usually have minimal payoff. Especially compared to the multitude of much better items.

The Blooper. That’s all I came here to say.
As a Jacob Smith, this video startled me deeply 9:20
It could be very disruptive if timed right
4:00 fake item box in 64 was amazing, just place them as close to a real one as possible and watch people blow themselves up getting items
Jacob must be livid
Missed chance at the end to say "bloop my brains out"
I think in MKDS, using the blooper against CPUs would make them start driving erratically and become much easier to overtake
it's the case for every game with the blooper i think (not played 7), it's definitely the most noticable on DS though - the CPUs start zig-zagging on straightaways and slow down significantly. In Wii and 8/dx they do go slower and swerve a little bit but it's not quite as powerful
obviously, this only affects CPUs, so bloopers are almost completely useless online
When I was younger I tricked myself into thinking that the fake item block was the only way to get the thundercloud in Wii
Which now that i think about it, that would be cool; bring back the fake block and when you hit it, it gives you an intentionally bad item
Blooper idea: Oh, like the Hack item in Disney Speedstorm?
@@pvzmariosonica8fan Yeah
i feel like this would just make the issue of it screwing over new players specifically even worse
A triple super horn? That’s already an item: Super Bell
That would simply screw over less skilled players too much. Just give it a similar effect to when you clip the bannana in MK64.
THANK YOU for the bit on the Super Leaf!
It’s, like you said, super versatile without being broken! It shows have returned rather than the Blooper!
Ugh, no thanks. _Both_ should be gone.
@@sonicboy678 You should be gone
4:47 it's distance and placement based even if first place is miles ahead second place cannot get bullet bills shocks or golden mushrooms also if you are in 9th place or worse you cannot get things like piranha plants or most triple defense items
8:33 it doesn't do jack shit in mk8d because unlike previous games the blooper makes you slip more making some turns actually impossible
Another thing that makes the golden mushroom just awful, is that the timer makes you unable to get any other item while you have it, and any other item at that position is more useful.
Stars are just objectively better, controllable speed boost, invincibility and leaves your item slot when used
12:22 the Lucky 7 more like the we're out of ideas 7
They put your thumbnail in an SML video
MK9 new item Diamond Blooper makes the entire screen blue❤❤❤
Somebody mail this man a box of blooper plushies
Logan's safe to blur your vid in the new SUPERMARIOLOGAN vid but didn't bother to blur Black Yoshi too??! Dumb dumb move he made. 😂

the blooper could be upgraded by it tracking down your next opponent and it would then create a puddle of ink in front. this puddle would briefly slip up whoever touches it and it also makes the tyres of whoever touched it slippery, just as blooper does currently. the puddle would disappear upon being touched.
So like a banana but with loss of traction
4:45 Common misconception is that it's still kind of based on placement
Some items no matter how far away/close you are they will still be items impossible to get
Second for example can under no circumstances get a bullet bill even if first is two laps ahead
Mainly just said this for the sake of the fun fact
FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT RIGHT
As soon as I saw the video title, I knew this was the kind of video where Silok just really wanted to talk about this specific topic.
On the other hand, the Piranha Plant is a terrible item that is best demonstrated with an anecdote:
Picture Super Bell Subway, you just got Mario-karted on the 3rd lap, and you're approaching the last item set of the race in 12th place.
You could view it as rednshells are fragile when theyre in motion, so when they're stationary they dont break when a tail hits them
Modded wii actually has a "Mega cloud"
which is same as the original, except it megas you, instead of shrinking you (obviously); a 'more balanced mega mushroom' if you will, and I think most would enjoy this concept in a possible MP9
Man i love modded MK, MK7's CTGP adds DD Fake item box, wii's mega mushroom, and Uprgades the bloooper to lower your speed

Turning on smart steering on tight turns in 200cc just when using a golden mushroom is def not “cheating” 💀
at least we can disable the Blooper now
Even Reggie said that the blooper is the worst item
The pacing on this video is insane. 🔥
(Also the wiki claims it is slightly bigger, but I will have to check later.)
You can see it being multicolored at 2:48 when Baby Mario drops the item, it is multicolored before fading to red.
Thanks for the info! When he said that it didn't change in wii, I was like WTF yes it does, but I still wasn't sure if it was just my memory fooling me. It's nice to have confirmation of something.
maybe it is multicolored in wii because i did notice it changing to red in the timestamp you provided, but i personally never really noticed that it was multicolored when playing the game myself. maybe it just changes to red way too early giving you way too much time to react or something
also it should just always stay multicolored imo, no reason for it to be red at all
@@TheLoginatoR I definitely do agree it should always be multicolored.
I loved mixing the Nintendo 64 fake item blocks with the actual ones.
I love blooper
In 8 the coin lets you protect your second item from boos + assures you to have smth else than a coin in your 2nd slot since you can't have 2 coins at the same time
Fire Flower is so forgotten it didnt get its own section
Damn youre right. I think he mightve forgotten about it because of the fireballs in double dash.
It's annoying but it definitely works. I'm glad they took away the ability to only throw 3 at a time before one disappears like in 7
In Mario Kart Tour, the blooper is really useful and one of the best items thanks to the combo system, since using it makes a delayed "hit" that helps you keep an ongoing combo during a flat section with not much tricks or coins to take
Unless they bring back that system it should be removed from the game though
The Blooper is not that bad in MK8, as it lowers the opponents' traction.
even on 200 it's barely noticeable so it's hardly enough
@@nettalie4435 ^this^
@@uppercutts It's very noticeable to me. Even on 150 you'll have to like take turns a different way because your lines won't be as tight because of the slipperiness
@nintendowolf Maybe it's noticeable because you're bad at the game.
Rolling a gold mushroom and a star from a double box in 8 feels terrible, because you're basically just waiting the timer out on the mushroom until you can get the same thing but with invincibility. There's plenty of times I've been hit by a lightning while waiting for the mushroom to time out.
I’m so happy that you hit 200k you deserve it, love watching your vids 👍
i always thought itd be cool to combine the fake item box and thundercloud, where if u get the fake box instead of spinning u out it actually does give u an item but its the cloud (assuming the item boxes would actually be convincing in this version)
Wow, what a sick jump on the bowser's castle map. You're practically a TAS!
i think the pow is good and is what makes wii so chaotic the second that pow is on screen everyone has to spam their items and it goes insane
This is my first SilokHawk video, was pretty funny.
Okay, for the fake item block, I use it in a specific way. (On DS ofc)
You hold onto it until u get to a cluster of item blocks and you drop it right after passing through an item block. Sure, you probably won't get any new items but it makes it harder to see depending on how good your timing was.
Bonus points if you leave it around a blind corner or booster pad.
Your video was blurred in the latest SML video
6:01 (technically 6:25) One thing I usually do with the Bob-Omb (at least in double dash. i don't remember if this quirk is in other games) is hold forward when throwing it.
That somehow increases it's throwing distance by a substantial amount.
For Example: (tested on Wario Colosseum on the Bloom Coach with Waluigi and Yoshi, in the middle of the last curved tile before the straight-away before the finish line.)
a Normal Throw will only clear 4 tiles and land in the 5th.
But holding forward before throwing will cause the Bob-Omb to clear 7 tiles and land in the 8th (which is almost the entire straight-away of that final stretch.)
Doing this also extends the amount of time it takes for the bomb to explode, and by enough to not explode immediately when you reach it.
9:30 As a fellow Jacob myself i find this video offensive to all Jacobs world wide >:(
always consistent rises in quality from your content, very appreciative of everything you put in to these :)
That also didnt exist in prior mario games (and if it did it certainly was never a prominent feature)
What about things like the boo?
I mean the same thing happens for the super horn
@@cosmicspacething3474 that one suffers of a huge problem called forgettabitity (I literally forgor about it 💀)
The thing with Golden mushrooms is that when you get one you are stuck having it for a few seconds which is really bad for chaining items. But it is mostly bad cause if you have a bullet Bill, but it is in your second inventory slots, then you need to wait for the golden mushroom to end, as if like, three mushrooms could have been used instantly
I hate the thunder cloud.
I love videos that ditch the 3 minute unnecessary explanatory intros 🙏
I'd love to see you cover the Arcade GP items alongside the Tour ones
I play mario kart 8 deluxe with my dad a lot, and the only item rule we ever use is custom items, only removing the blooper because it's just annoying and not fun. 100% Agree with the sentiment on this one
8:20 I think a great fix for the blooper would be to increase the amount of ink spots, the further you are in front. So 1st would have their screen almost entirely covered and last would only have a single ink spot.
You forgot the pause/home button, granted that one’s OP in offline play but actively working against you in online play.
Your video made it to an sml video
Which one
My case for the bomb being a good item is the Single banana, the bomb is a single banana with a much more effective forward offense, and a very strong rearward offense, just lacking the blocking ability.
Definitely the blooper
This is why blooper needs to be playable instead
Bloopette
Super Circuit disrespect, you hate to see it
You really went over some agreeable points about MK as a whole! Can't wait to see what items they add to that teased "MK Ultra" everyone's talking about!
The coin isn’t that awful, it mildly sabotages 1st place and gives 2nd a chance to catch up. It’s meant to be bad *Drops mic*
Alternatively it can help first by having the main defensive item in the second slot so the coin gets stolen by a Boo
oh, what you said about "auto-steering" reminded me of a video where a group of "Twitch chat" users were trying to steer ONE cart, and their opponent was a cart with auto-steer on, the accelerate button held down, and NO other inputs, kind of like those old "Luigi wins by doing nothing" vids.
and yes, it WAS Luigi in that second cart.
I'm not as sure about this one in particular, but I thought it'd be an interesting rework.
the blooper in 8 already reduces your traction, to be fair
@@SquidSystem Oh yeah I know. But it doesn't feel like enough that the change is noticeable, at least when playing it yourself. If they want to keep it in the game they should at least make it more annoying.
You didn't give some long winded introduction to Mario kart or start with the history of Nintendo as a compamy...made me like the video instantly lmao
Nice. You fulfilled my request
Coin box in tour is actually the best item in the game as it increases your score like crazy
5:38 exactly...
1:07 DUDE!!! That was awesome! This is why I watch these videos, for top tier Mario Kart plays! 😂😂😂
I've never been affected by the blooper but ever since the BCP it felt like the blooper is the strongest item. Really goes to show how much you memorize a track after a decade of playing on em
I legit only use smart steering just for the Golden Mushroom!🤣🤣🤣
