** Plot
As with Gearbox's previous expansion pack Opposing Force, Blue Shift returns to the setting and events of the original game, but portrays the story through the eyes of another person. The protagonist in Blue Shift is a security guard, Barney Calhoun, employed by the Black Mesa Research Facility. After a scientific mishap causes Black Mesa to be invaded by aliens, Calhoun must fight his way to safety.
** Notes
The Steam version is the closest to the original that I could find, although the initial menu is different.
The game included a High Definition pack that upgraded the models and textures in both Blue Shift and the preceding Half-Life games. This longplay does not use this pack. -

I like how you don't skip and just run through everything like everybody else does. You play it like a movie and it's awesome.
I like how Barney just walks around in the beginning just pointing his gun at everyone. Outstanding security guard protocol.

In this version, you are Barney trying to open the door and Freeman passes on a cart. On Half Life, you see the same thing the other way around.
Yeah, same in Opposing Force where you see Gordon jumping into the portal.

Nostalgia overload! I loved PC games back then. The chunky graphics, the authentic storylines and characters, the massive game maps, the install straight from a CD without the use of Steam...etc..etc. I'll really have to add this to my play again list.

Barney is the most badass protagonist, he scaped the gman and with no powersuit whatsoever.
A short and sweet game. I recommend playing this before playing the Half Life 1 campaign.
Wolfflow500 Cause y'know, it shows that you came to the facility first, then Gordon takes a train behind you.

Also, the main game is super long.
Wolfflow500 And I would recommend playing Opposing Forces after the main game since because the military is the enemy in the main game, and you play as the military in that.

Yeah. Interesting priorities: Protect all experiments and equipment above all and when that's safe, then guard the personel. If there's time, save yourself as well.

Blue Shift is the story of Calhoun, one of the policemen you meet in the original game. It happens in the same place and the same time as the original game. It was very original at the time, and great fun playing

+HazyMan The G-Man is in the tram when you enter this area at 12:30 look it up at the Half-Life wiki at the end of Half-Life 1 and opposing force you see the G-Man in Half-Life 1 he tells Gordon freeman to offer a job.
So they did the Black Mesa Incident from the points of view of three scientists, a marine and a security guard. You even get to be an alien for one level. I'm surprised they never did one as a black ops assassin.

the jumpscares with the headhumpers are rediculously pronounced in Barney's segments I'm realizing. Wow does that feel cheap because you're getting no attempt to fight most of these before they get a free hit in.
We don't need a fast game. We need a perfect game.
I am a retro gamer don't play many fps or story mode games but now that these games are considered old I went and gave them another look. I got the valve bundle for 11 dollars it had every Half Life, both Portals which I wanted and didn't know came and Day of Defeat which is a bonus I will try and a couple others. All in all I paid 50 cents a piece for each Half Life and combined with the older graphics I can honestly say I love Half Life and this expansion is so cool.

Fun Fact:
''Blue Shift" is not referring to the color of Barney's uniform, or how long his "shift" is...It refers the the expansion/DE-expansion of the universe. In the theory of the Universe forming, the "Red Shift" is the theory of it expanding, and a "Blue Shift" means the universe comes together. Thus, meaning several different races, alien and human alike, come together to do battle.

How did you manage to copy the game as you played it! This was always on my wish list, How did you do it? I realize you edited out the times you were killed, but still it was great. I played this as my first HL experience right after 9-11 and still play all the games as they never seem to get old and still, nothing else can equal the HF series. The game of the 20th & 21 centuries! Please share how you managed to copy the game. Thanks, Rich

Never mind, I realized that this is the HD pack for it. Never realized there was one. If you want these HD weapons, just paste this in your browser while steam is running.

They do, but not in this expansion of the game. What you're thinking of is Half-Life: Source, which utilizes the Source engine creating the rag-doll effect. Hope I helped. :)

The graphics here aren't even bad. They were an improvement upon even the original, plus they updated both other games at the same time. If a game is fun, graphics aren't even important.

It was ofcourse Opposing Force that came first as an expansion pack using the same timeline as the original. I just mixed them. Sorry.

My first PC game was the original Half life, and although i played it several years after it was released (and by that i mean 2008) it was a heck of a game.

Look up a few gameplay/LP videos that was uploaded in 2011/2012 and wait for the player to get the pistol and shotgun, the model is different.

I'm at around 12:00, and I realize while he's working on that computer. There are complex "lock out/tag out" procedures that plants must follow for maintenance. That computer panel must be DE-energized, a maintenance lockout placed on it's source of power, and everyone in the work area's name written on a safe work permit.
I know most don't care, I just thought I'd share lol. Prob things like this that led to the downfall of Black Mesa.
@phomie2000 I think the longplayer forgot to install or enable the the HD Pack which is bundled with retail version of the game. Characters look much better with that.

It's funny how this game advertised the HD models, but the non HD model animations are different, while Barney reuses Gordan Freeman's animations with different arms
I am going to be honest I was actually quite disappointed in Blue Shift after how good Opposing Force was as Opposing Force seemed like a new game in terms of new enemies, weapons etc but in Blue Shift it seemed too short and the was no new features to the game other than the HEV was replaced by Body Armour. Nether the less I did enjoy the story aspect as I found the story of Blue shift very interesting and I liked the scenes where the player saw Gordon.

In terms of core gameplay, not. Half-Life, Opposing Force, and Blue Shift all play virtually identically. Oppposing Force has some new weapons and enemies, but they are all virtually copy pasted vartiants of other guns that already exist.
Example, the sniper-rifle is basically a hit-scan variant of the crossbow. The new black ops and Alien Trooper enemies are basically clones of the Hgrunt AI.
I discovered HL after playing Far Cry, and I still consider it much better, even if I love Far Cry. Video games are not just about graphics or licence or whatever. It's about gameplay and atmosphere..
