Yep that's what happened to mine. I broke the lock latch trying to force the lid up enough to stop the drum when I needed a pair of clothes in a hurry and didnt want to wait ages for it to slowly stop turning. Some safety features are important, like safety glasses around power tools and saw blade guards but I'll take an older washer that lets you just open it when you need to any day over all this overly safe new crap.
YEAH !!! These new fandangle GE.Hot Point washers are BULL CRAP!!@#$%.I' ll take an old used one any day that I can afford! So much for NEW stuff! I would use an old wringer Matag any day now if I could find one😮..😮.
Thank you so much for this video, I am a 62 year old woman and I managed to fix my washer because the lid lock was not working. I ended up using a screw driver to get it to function and it drained completely and everything is in the dryer. Thank you again!! Debbie
OMG !!! My washer wouldn't drain and wouldn't lock or go on again for any cycle. Kept making clicking only sounds. All I did was apply the first tip of the counter clock wise turns. And it now works. Thank you. You are the most efficient easy to follow trouble shooter.
My friend, I commend you and your work. I followed your directions, leaned the washer over and found the paperwork, ran through the tests, found the latch wasn't working, got a replacement on Amazon, and fixed the machine less than two minutes after the replacement arrived. Thanks, from a worried homeowner.
Absolutely the best video on diagnosing your ge washer issues that have the green led lights that run across the top, step by step diagnosis to the tee and locating the diagnostic paper work taped to the inside wall at the left rear of the machine towards the back if your looking at the machine. I located the paper work on mine thanks to you and followed the instructions step by step and had the same issue with the lid lock. My machine would fill but not start the washing cycle. I removed the switch and it had the same issue as yours... ALERT ALERT ALERT, I bought a new switch from a local appliance parts store and was informed that you can not buy just the lid lock switch only, YOU HAVE TO BUY THE ASSEMBLY WITH THE SWITCH MEANING THE WIRING HARNESS AND THE NEW LATCH, ITS ALL A NEW KIT OR THE SWITCH WILL NOT WORK, YOU NEED THE WHOLE NEW KIT....and install it, its really easy to do, if you youtube the rent-to-own video on replacing the lid lock on a ge or hotpoint washer these guys go step by step through the process, it was so easy and it worked, my machine is running normally now thanks to you and the guys at rent-to-own, thank you , it was about 75 bucks for the kit, I didnt want to wait for amazon or ebay or appliance parts co online, but get THE WHOLE KIT IF YOUR GOING TO CHANGE YOUR LID LOCK SWITCH, was told by many people in the appliance industry that this should have absolutely been a recall on this particular switch by GE since tens of thousands of recently purchased machines are having this issues which forced them to redesign this switch...
Thanks, buddy! You're the real MVP. You just saved me $85, and two days to make it out here, for someone to tell me what this 15-minute video covered in a clear, concise, and easy to understand way.
Thank you so much for this video! It was so cool to go through the diagnostic procedures, identify the same problem you used as an example, then we were able to fix the spring that had a problem within the switch, plug it back in, and then it totally worked!! Thank you again for giving us the tools to be successful!
Man, I'm about 20 seconds in to this video, and I stopped it to say: in that short time you have already answered a question I've literally been searching for for about a week. Where can I get the schematics. I knew they should be on the machine somewhere. So thank you, even if that is the only thing I'm gonna get out of this. I'm sure as I'm about to return to the video that you will teach me more than that.
WOW, I'M ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY, I HAD ZERO IDEA, THESE MACHINES HAVE A SELF DIAGNOSTICS FUNCTION, THANK YOU SIR, I BELIEVE NOW I CAN FOLLOW YOUR PROCEDURE, TO REPAIR MY WASHER.! GOD BLESS YOU SIR..!!!
Thank you so much! Because of your video, I was able to find the service mode manual under the washer, understand how to use it, and diagnose this exact problem with the lock. I ordered the part immediately and 3 days later was able to install it based on your next video. A service call alone would have been $50-$100 and no telling what they would have charged for part and labor. I did it for less than $30. You are a blessing!
Thank you thank you!!!! Exactly what my problem was. I just followed your easy instructions as you went along. Saved me $800 and it felt pretty damn good to call my husband and announced that I had fixed our washer! He was ready to go washer shopping this afternoon. Thank you again!!!
I don't normally get on RUclips so I asked if anyone could help me with mine.please look me up on messenger so I know someone read my comment and maybe be able to point me in the right direction.ty
I have watched so many diy or how to... If you were not a teacher ... You missed your calling. Thank you for your help I just fixed my first broken appliance ever , 💕♥️
Thank you soooo much for posting this video! My GE top load washer that's only 3 years old stopped working mid-cycle. I was able to determine that it was a problem with the lid lock. Ordered the part and now my washer is working again!! This saved me well over $100 service call for such a simple fix. Thank you sir!!
I bought the same machine today off craigs list for $75.00. Got it home cleaned it and hooked it up outside my garage and ran a small cycle. Worked great, moved it to the laundry room and had to exteded the drain line and went to test the drain and I could hear that lid switch bumping on and off and the machine would not start the drain cycle. I checked out that switch and no joke my switch has the same problem with same spring loaded terminal.Atleast it was only $75.00! Thanks for the great info!
Thanks, been working on Appliances since 96, its amazing how much i have learned frrom You tube. Although i have to hide from my customers when looking at you tube!!!
Hello, I just want to say I have never repaired a single thing in my life and this video helped me diagnose my issue, and your other video helped me replace it. Thank you so much. 36$ fix when GE wanted 100$ just to drive to my house and diagnose
thank you! we have had the washer for five years and all of a sudden, it didn't work. found the paper and found the lid switch is bad. quite simple. good!
Thanks for this video, it helps to see how to use this function. One issue I saw with the Pressure Sensor test you did, you have to let the test run longer and as the water level rises in the tub the LED's will turn off as each pressure level (Representing higher head pressure/water level) is reached. If the pressure cannot build up it will indicate a leak in the system and could be why the unit will not agitate.
Thank you so much for this video! I ended up having the same problem with the lid lock and your step by step video saved me so much time and I didn't need to hire someone just to do 5 minutes of work. Going to order a new part tomorrow and hopefully everything works out fine. Keep up the informative videos, they are so helpful!
I had that lid lock switch go bad. Luckily I found a OEM switch, because factory put out a repair/replacement kit that eliminates the original switch type. I did come here to find out how to run diagnostic sequence. I found the chart, but was confused on process. Thanks for demonstrating.
Thank you!!! I did every single step and after i tested all the steps I pressed the start button and the washer started working. Not sure what was the issue but it work..
Dude! This is exactly what my machine was doing - and the reason - broken lid switch - just like yours. But since I really needed to do laundry today - I took the switch apart and with a bit of super glue and tiny piece of card board for a backer - I was able to get it back into operation. If /when it fails again - then I will order a new switch. Thank you for the great video :)
Probably the best video I have watched in a while. You can take the switch apart and engage the coil part of the switch and it will run until you get another switch. Caution the door doesn’t lock so don’t open lid or leave lid open while in operation.
@@justdissin7340 It wouldn't even turn on the water. I went through the diagnostic and determined I could get the water to turn on so I knew it wasn't the valve. It was DOA. As soon as I hooked up the new part, it worked like a charm. Special note: This part is going into back order status and is being made by a different manufacturer...3 x as much unless you find the ones before they switched.
Thank you for this! I ordered a new part , followed the steps, except for when you texted the lid lock my rinse light flashed with the lid closed and with the lid open the lid lock blinked. Not sure what’s going on with it . But this helped me get further than I was
Thank you, thank you, thank you. All the other videos on GE washer troubleshooting were of very little help. This one was clear, complete, well presented...and solved my problem. Perfect. Keep it up!
Thanks sir, nice video. I have the same washer and it was stuck in drain mode where the drain pump kept running. I un plugged the washer and plugged it back in, however this guy did not resolve the issue and the drain pump kept running. I could not select a wash cycle either since all of the front panel LEDs were blank. I followed your procedure to go into diagnostics mode and and came to the part of the test were it gave the option of resetting error codes and that solved the problem. After doing that I was able to select wash cycles and it was working properly. For those folks who asked how to bypass the lid switch, that can be done by simply taking the wires off the switch and shorting them together, either with a crimp connector or a twist marrett connector. I would not recommend this though since it's better to put in a new lid switch. My washer is 5 years old now and this was the first issue I had with it. Resetting the error codes solved my problem. I would have to say this is one of the most reliable washers I have owned. I don't like front-load washers due to the mould issues with the rubber seal around the door. Thanks again.
Thank you mister I was having the same problem so took off my switch after watching your video and i have the same exact problem with mine. I almost went out and bought a new washing machine but thanks to you I just ordered a new lid switch. thank God for people like you that take the time to post helpful videos on you tube. When I get my new switch I will let you know how it goes. I did not know about the paper underneath either to preform diagnostic test . Thanks a bunch and God bless.
Thank you So much for posting this video… we have the same exact GE washer and had the same exact problem… (washer wouldn’t spin because lid would not lock)….. After watching your video I noticed that the lid lock button wasn’t lighting up anymore like it used to after filling with water, so instead of doing all the test, I simply felt the switch to see if they we’re both springing back, but just like yours one was & the other was broke… I l ordered the replacement part on Amazon for $13.00 & it came in the next day… Washer Fixed! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
You are the best! After searching through so many videos, yours is the one that was clear, concise and to the point! The only one that was actually helpful. Thank you so much!
I was able to get my switch to work again by manually toggling it back and forth a number of times. Thanks to you I know its location. I suspect dirt or moisture may be corroding a metal terminal so the switch resistance is too high. If I had one out, I might tear it down to learn of its design so they could fix it. Magnetic reed switch would have been more reliable but more costly of a design. An optical switch too would have worked better. I will say the belt is easier to change in this model.
9/29/2023 Drive belt was fine on the customer's GE washer. Lid switch seems to be the problem, so I went to the local appliance parts store. He sold the last one he had in stock for $45.00. He could order one for me but they are now going for 100 dollars. Customer does not want to pay $107.00 with tax for a replacement switch. What I'm finding is that replacement appliance parts have shot up in price, some doubling. I just paid 135.00 for a refrigerator door gasket, and $133.00 for a whirlpool shock absorber set of 4. By the time you add labor on top of these parts, a lot of people would rather buy a new machine. So don't get to excited about doing appliance repair as a side job. Due to the increases on appliance parts, parts stores are not stocking a lot of the parts they would normally have on the shelf. I could go to a place that does have a lot of these parts in stock, but the customers may not want to pay the excessive prices for parts and labor.
Thank you very much for a well spoken and informative video. You have put some groceries in my family’s mouth, with the great savings. Have a wonderful day!
Thank you... I have this washer/dryer set. Looking to diagnose my problem I found it interesting how many videos there are on this specific washer. I’m thinking about fixing it and selling... look for something, a set, much, much older... when things were built to last. I’m NO fan of planned obsolescence... Like a river, maybe a bucket... and a clothesline. Advancements in dentistry aside, I was born at the wrong time. 😏 Thanks again! *looking at the title of your channel... I’m now a new subscriber 👍*
thank you for this video , it helped a lot , every time I looked at the diagnostics paper I thought I was taking a multiple choice test with all those dots
thank you for the video. also, just wanted to share one other critical thing before getting into it. there may be a power outage in your area and as a result, your washer and drier may not work. in this case, unplug/turn off your power breaker for about a few seconds up to 2 minutes; try this first before doing more in-depth analysis/testing. mine washer was working fine after i added my clothes and detergent, water was running and i closed the lid, 30 minutes later i came to check the water was full and it didnt spin or drain. i can hear the clicking sound of the releasing lid mechanism was just clicking and i thought it had to be 1 of the two release latches. confused and i was going to check just like you showed in this video. "i am lazy by nature," so i told myself let's do the easiest test first unplug and plug back on; i did that and it work perfectly... just want to share my experience.
Thank you!!! Just order a new lock....Will be here tomorrow!!! Just cancelled my service call that would have cost $150....Praying that is the only thing wrong!🙏🤣
Thanks for making this video...saved me a lot of money and grief of calling somebody out to look it over. I followed along exactly with you and ended up with the same problem and it was broken in the same spot. Didn't even have to go fish out the manual. Thanks for the link to the part as well, it's already ordered and will be here within a week 👌
It also threw the lid code but it locks the lid durning the other tests. Took the lid lock out and cleaned the terminals. It’s in a spot that can and has gotten wet with small loads. More water than clothes and the water has splashed on it before. I also removed the pump and cleaned it. It had cat litter in it. That’s my fault for not shaking off my litter mat thoroughly.
We had a different issue, but the info concerning the diagnostics was extremely helpful. Ran the tests and got it down to the hall sensor or motor. Just replaced the sensor... and it worked! Thank you for your video!
Well this video was the best i came across i must be stupid because i found and looked at the chart and didn't know how to decipher the code lol 😆 i can go through the stuff now (ty) but i still get lost in the sauce somewhere along the way retrying later
You are such a life saver. This video was very informative and very helpful. Thank you for keeping me from going out and buying a new washer. God Bless 🙌
Thank you sooo, much for making this video. It was very helpful, I followed the diagnostic procedure right along with you, and had the same lid switch problem,on the same side even. So glad I can buy a $22 Switch instead of a new machine. Again very helpful, Thanks.
Hi William seems I have the same problem just wondering if you could please tell me where you ordered your switch from it would be a great help thanks so much
Thank u so much! I'm not a technician in any way but my washer was having a problem with not starting for some reason and I thought it was the lid lock. I followed ur video and everything seems to be in working condition. After the test i put in a load and my washer is alive again! 🥳🥳🤯🤯 I told my husband about it and he freaked out that I was able to fix the washer somehow lol. Thank u so much for this video! You saved me money that I currently dont have 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for your thorough explanation. I was able to have machine drain & rinse. My extended warranty expired 2 days ago! But how do I get out of the testing mode. I lost the code sheet 😫.
Thank you for the video it helped me get my dryer back up and running again we should stay in contact I may need another video for something else because this video was a big help for me
we had a tech come out didnt even get the paper on the side or do the test (diag)same washer thank you now i know where to start i will update on a later date on what i found but i to suspected the lid switch too but with the diag stuff i can do i can now hopefully figure it out
thx so much for taking the time to make this video. i couldnt find the diagnostic sheet in my machine so i followed you along step by step. my drain pump wasnt working. i removed it and put 110 volts on it and it worked fine. reinstalled it and it worked fine. im thinking the pump may have been jammed on a piece of dirt. ?? but thx again !
Thanks for taking the time to make this video mine just broke and I already did the diagnostic and yup my lid switch is bad aswell I already order it came out to 33 dollars shipped. Thanks again
My machine would just kind of agitate I guess, with no water in it like it was stuck in a loop. Unplug it and plug it back in and it would still do that. Thanks to this video I found that treasure map I never knew was under the washer (I rent a house) and fixed the problem.
Great Video, Thank you it helped greatly. How do the slide switches on a working switch work? Mine fell apart, and Im trying to rebuild it. Thanks again
It's simple, if it doesn't lock it will never spin. Test lid switch. If it shows open when closed, inspect lid striker (latch) to make sure it's not broken. If it's good, then change the switch.
Thanks so much for your help I grabbed the diagnostic paper beneath ram the test figured out it was the latch etc I fixed the problem myself. Ps the wife was impressed w my tactics. Any
Helpful video . Question I have is when you did the recirculate pump test , you didnt push the button. you just commented on the lights. it looks as if you did an edit there . in the other steps you push start to test. Again , video is helpful to troubleshoot, but not sure of Recirculate pump test procedure .please clarify Thanks

Thanks for the tip on locating the "secret decoder ring" document to explain how to use the diagnostics.
Glad it was helpful!
Life saver and pocket saver. The wife just wanted another new machine and we really just got this one ☝️ THANKS 🙏 Mine was the switch also.
Glad I could help!
This video helped so much. Had the same problem with my washer . Waiting on my part to arrive . Thank you so much
Glad it helped
Thank you so much! With your help, I was able to fix my washing machine by myself. So happy!!
You helped us get our washer back up and running this evening. Truly appreciate your time and excellent information. THANK YOU
Glad to help
I was able to get my switch to work again by manually toggling it back and forth a number of times. Thanks to you I know its location. I suspect dirt or moisture may be corroding a metal terminal so the switch resistance is too high. If I had one out, I might tear it down to learn of its design so they could fix it. Magnetic reed switch would have been more reliable but more costly of a design. An optical switch too would have worked better. I will say the belt is easier to change in this model.
I have a ge different model changed the lid lock switch turn it back on and had codes. Best video to learn how to test hands down
Glad it helped

Drive belt was fine on the customer's GE washer.
All those switches are made in China. I picked up one on Amazon for $13.99 and I had it in 2 days.
Thank you sir, this was also the same washer and same problem. So this video was spot on perfect, and I'm sure saved us a ton of money.
Glad it helped
Thank you! This is why youtube is amazing for DYI.
Happy to help!

Glad it helped!
Appreciate your time. I had a different washer but i fallowed your steps and it actually worked 😂.
Great to hear!
This Really Helped me my Machine got a Error full of clothes and water and I could get it to pump and spin this way
Thanks for watching. I'm happy to help.
Thanks again!
*looking at the title of your channel... I’m now a new subscriber 👍*
Glad you enjoyed it!
thank you for this video , it helped a lot , every time I looked at the diagnostics paper I thought I was taking a multiple choice test with all those
dots
Glad it helped!
Thanks a million! I watched your video and fixed my washer. Same problem you had. Ordered part on Amazon.
Glad it helped!
I also had failure codes 14, 23, 24 all are related to fail to lock lid. Good advice thank you. I would have never found the diag. sheet with out you.
Glad to help
This was soooo awesome to get this water drained / spun out! Thanks 🙏🏿 so much!!
Thanks for watching. I'm happy to help.
Thank you so much for making the video. Turns out my GE washer lid switch is having that issue
Glad it helped
thank you for the video. also, just wanted to share one other critical thing before getting into it. there may be a power outage in your area and as a result, your washer and drier may not work. in this case, unplug/turn off your power breaker for about a few seconds up to 2 minutes; try this first before doing more in-depth analysis/testing.
mine washer was working fine after i added my clothes and detergent, water was running and i closed the lid, 30 minutes later i came to check the water was full and it didnt spin or drain. i can hear the clicking sound of the releasing lid mechanism was just clicking and i thought it had to be 1 of the two release latches. confused and i was going to check just like you showed in this video.
"i am lazy by nature," so i told myself let's do the easiest test first unplug and plug back on; i did that and it work perfectly... just want to share my experience.
Thank you for your advice. I'm sure it will help someone.
Thank you so very much for that detailed and very helpful tutorial, God bless you.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you!!! Just order a new lock....Will be here tomorrow!!! Just cancelled my service call that would have cost $150....Praying that is the only thing wrong!🙏🤣
Good luck! Keep me posted.
Amazing step by step instructions! I was able to determine the problem and the part is on order. That you Get it Done Home Repair!!!
You're welcome!
Thank for watching. I'm happy to help.
I never knew i had the code sheet under my washer. Just diagnosed the drain pump.
Kudos to you.
Great job. Thanks for watching.
Glad it helped!
Hall sensor? Your machine has got one of them bldc magnet rotor motor?
Best video. Explain everything perfectly. Made for dummies like me. 🥴
I give you credit for doing the repair yourself. Thanks for watching.
God Bless 🙌
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you sooo, much for making this video. It was very helpful, I followed the diagnostic procedure right along with you, and had the same lid switch problem,on the same side even. So glad I can buy a $22 Switch instead of a new machine. Again very helpful, Thanks.
Great to hear!

@@williamjones9614 ok thx
Thank u so much! I'm not a technician in any way but my washer was having a problem with not starting for some reason and I thought it was the lid lock. I followed ur video and everything seems to be in working condition. After the test i put in a load and my washer is alive again! 🥳🥳🤯🤯 I told my husband about it and he freaked out that I was able to fix the washer somehow lol. Thank u so much for this video! You saved me money that I currently dont have 🙏🙏🙏
Glad I could help! Great job
Thank you for your thorough explanation. I was able to have machine drain & rinse. My extended warranty expired 2 days ago! But how do I get out of the testing mode. I lost the code sheet 😫.
Thank you so much! The lid switch was the problem on mine as well. Your video was easy to follow along :-)

thx so much for taking the time to make this video. i couldnt find the diagnostic sheet in my machine so i followed you along step by step. my drain pump wasnt working. i removed it and put 110 volts on it and it worked fine. reinstalled it and it worked fine. im thinking the pump may have been jammed on a piece of dirt. ?? but thx again !
Thanks for taking the time to make this video mine just broke and I already did the diagnostic and yup my lid switch is bad aswell I already order it came out to 33 dollars shipped. Thanks again
Glad it helped. That is a very good price. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the help I didn't know how to use it I'm not use to these newer models
Glad I could help
My machine would just kind of agitate I guess, with no water in it like it was stuck in a loop. Unplug it and plug it back in and it would still do that. Thanks to this video I found that treasure map I never knew was under the washer (I rent a house) and fixed the problem.
Thanks for watching
Great Video, Thank you it helped greatly. How do the slide switches on a working switch work? Mine fell apart, and Im trying to rebuild it. Thanks again
Great video. Great walkthrough help me fix me washer.
This was a very interesting video I learned a lot thank you for showing this video
Glad it was helpful!
It's simple, if it doesn't lock it will never spin. Test lid switch. If it shows open when closed, inspect lid striker (latch) to make sure it's not broken. If it's good, then change the switch.
Thank you, you are a life saver. I will be able to order the part and get back up.
Glad I could help!
This video saved my life. Thank you!
Thanks for watching. I'm happy to help.

I have the same question. Mine did nothing when I pushed start.
