  • Fixing a GE washing machine that will not start the wash cycle. The most common fix to this issue is replacing the lid lock mechanism. This washing machine repaired in this video is a GE GTW460ASJ5WW however this video is applicable to a lot of the newer GE top load washing machines. This video is part of my series "Free on Facebook" in which I repair, recycle, and repurpose things I find for free.

I literally thank God for allowing me to find your video so I could fix my own washing machine. It just stopped working, and I was literally shocked because I had spent money doing other things, and a new washer was NOT in the plans. I tried to hire a company to repair it, but the rate was outrageous for me to pay when I knew the problem. I have the same brand and model. I purchased the part for $20.99 on Amazon. After watching your video, I repaired it myself in 10-15 mins, and the washer is working, and the load is already on the rinse cycle! Thank you very much. Be blessed! I will look out for more things from you in the near future. Thanks again!

Hi, I was hoping this would tell me why my agitator and basket don't work independently. I purchased my GE GTW335ASN2WW about 15 months ago and the agitator and drum have always been like one unit. I thought that was normal (and very annoying) but someone told me they should work independently. Any thoughts on why and how to fix that? I have googled the question in many different ways but cannot find any answer. Thank you in advance.

I can see the screws holding the top down, but there are also smaller screws, holding wires down. Need some help, if you can.
Have one year old washer like this.
In a cottage that gets winterized, so it has about 3 months of use.
Put in first load, it filled completely, and then did nothing for quite awhile, then drained out.
Now it wont even fill. Just sits and makes a chittering sound (like it's sensing?)before shutting back off.
Have done the diagnostic mode, door lock has passed the continuity test (though sometimes gets hung-up on release), blew out pressure line, stuck drill bit into lower air hose nipple. Belt is fine, both motor and basin spin freely.
Could the lid lock be the whole problem, even though it does lock?
    Frustrated and at a loss.

I ended up taking the lid lock off and putting it in its receptacle (can't think of the exact word), and now it works! I don't close the lid, because I don't want the lock moving around, but I don't have little ones to worry about. Sometimes I have to take the lock out and put it back in, but it works. Man, if that contact btwn the lid lock and its receptacle aren't perfect, it won't work!

On my GE model I actually just unscrewed and removed the part that is on the lid. Then I just left it pushed into the assembly so the machine 'thought' the lid was locked when it really wasn't. Not all brands/models have the top thing that can be removed though.

This is what I want to know it's just three wires going in which completes the circuit what do you have to do to just have it know it's locked and closed bypass this entire thing made of junk and poorly injected molded plastic. I did a load of laundry and it clicks open and the little piece of plastic comes flying out now won't run cuz the circuit won't close. Mine doesn't even have the plug it goes right into the lock mechanism. Tell you I would take a washer that's 30 yrs old over any new one all junk.
