The Ancient Teachings Of Mahayana Buddhism

  • While it is difficult to determine the exact date of the emergence of Mahāyāna Buddhism, it seems to have been some centuries after the death of the Buddha.
The Buddha is believed to have died around 400 BCE, and the early texts based on the direct teachings of the Buddha, known as the Pāli Canon, are the texts upon which Theravāda Buddhism to this day has its foundations.
It is believed that the Mahayana tradition developed out of this early form of Theravāda Buddhism sometime between the 1st century BCE and the 1st century CE.
What were the differences and why did Mahāyāna Buddhism emerge?
Mahāyāna Buddhism was a response to what was perceived as the elitism of the Theravāda tradition.
Particularly, the Theravāda’s monastic tradition which focused most on intense meditation and ascetic practices.
Mahāyāna Buddhism sought to make the teachings of the Buddha more accessible to ordinary people, not just to monks and nuns.
It is best understood as a school of Buddhism that teaches that all people have the capacity to become awakened and realise the nature of reality.
Mahāyāna Buddhism also emphasises compassion on the path to enlightenment.
This is best illustrated by the Mahāyāna ideal of the bodhisattva, or the enlightened being who postpones their enlightenment for the salvation of all beings - not just humans, but animals as well!
Important too is that while Theravāda Buddhism recognises only the Pāli Canon as being the true teachings of the Buddha, Mahāyāna Buddhism includes texts called sutras as also the true teachings of the Buddha.
Many of these sutras are known to have come into existence long after the lifetime of the Buddha but are still considered to be the recorded words of the Buddha.

There are too many comments rooted in division and sectarianism. Theravada Buddhists with their negative opinions about Mahayana and Mahayana Buddhist with their opinions that they are practicing superior Dharma. Whatever tradition we practice, we are ALL Buddhists. We have all entered the gate of the precious Dharma. The vehicle and school you follow is not a conscious decision. It is based on your merit, complex karmic conditions and where you are on the path. The point is, we are all on the path (those of us who are, indeed, Buddhist). We are all the same family, children of the Bhagavan Buddha. It is this kind of inner conflict and arguing that will slowly deteriorate Buddhism. Further, to feel compelled to argue your point or prove your path is superior, is rooted solely in ego. And attachment to a particular tradition. We should support and encourage one another. And this should extend to all religions. All humans are on the path they are on due to their karma. There is no "wrong" one. This is an extremely narrow minded view. We are where we are.... Different stages in the path, ultimately, to enlightenment and/or Bodhichitta. All of us....

This video is educative. About the eight fold path, I know where the Buddha taught this. Many of the ancient sangarams are today villages. There is one unique village name which is NAWADA meaning eight promises. These villages are common in Bihar. Eight promises can be translated as the eight fold path. It seems these villages had the pleasure of the Buddha preaching to the distant ancesters of the present day villagers, ‘The eight fold path’. Infact Sariputra became an Arhat in a sangaram called NAWADA in Vaishali. Nawada means the eight promises.

Very educative. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha.

Just saying: The Japanese Tendai school came directly from the Chinese Tian Tai school, even the writing in kanji is the same (天台). Although all were thought to originate from Chan Buddhism, after Bodhidharma, Mahayana Buddhism split into many schools and Tian Tai is one of them. As others in the chat also mentioned, Soto Zen came directly from Cao Dong Zong. The use of Koans is also a Chinese Chan practice, and KoAns is the Japanese pronounciation of the Chinese Gong An (公案)。 Finally, you left Pure Land Buddhism late in the video, almost as an after thought, but Pure Land is one of the biggest schools today. You also need to mention MiZong, which died out in the Tang dynasty but it's almost equilvalent to Chinese Varjayana, and that school today survives in Japan as the Shingon school.

What fascinates me is that Mahayana and Vajrayana "Buddhisms" brought back the adoration of the GODDESS, which the Theravadins rejected and discarded!!!! The Goddess, called Padma-Päni or "born of the lotus," is Quan Yin across large parts of Asia, and Tära in Tibet. We need admit and realize that Theravada pretty much disappeared in India, though recently there has been a trend to learn mindfulness in 10 day courses. It is called Vipassana, (Vi-puss-ana with the puss rhyming with plus) which in Sanskrit is Vipashyana (pash rhymes with plush) or to see with great insight. It is a practice that people of just about any religion will find worthwhile learning. It gives tremendous insight into the goings-on of the mind, and I personally don't see the difference between Vipassana and Zen, except for some Zen masters calling "Buddha" a dirty word!!!!😁 Note: the Merriam Webster dictionary uses ä to be pronounced as in the words far or father.

If one is in Absolut, one is beyond any dualism, including Buddha, no-Buddha, purity and impurity. Besides - Buddha - Absolut means that everything is embraced by it, even shit! Pure land buddhism is considerably larger than any other school in mahayana, to the point that other schools like zen incorporate pure land practices (except in the west). It's kinda a half truth that Dōgen created sōtō zen. It comes from Caodong established by Dongshang Liangjie. Sōtō's meditation methods come from Hongzhi Zhengjue's 'silent illumination'.

@The_Truth_is_Jesus_is_not_God pure land and chan are not really separate in china, they exist within the same temples. And the new buddhist humanism movements in Taiwan and China are still very rooted in pure land. The average lay follower in china doesn't interact with chan practices since they are viewed as for monastics. Meditation is not popular, but tbh most buddhists dont meditate. Pure land recitation and devotion is the main practice. To the point where most families will have statues and pictures of amituofo and not shakyamuni. People even greet each other in certain occasions by saying amituofo.

It's almost impossible to go in depth due to the many similarities. Yes a general outline is fairly easy to be made, but the deeper you delve, the more complicated it gets, because at some point the specific feats are so subtle that you can leave out other sects.
Having said this, Buddha teachings are Buddha teachings, regardless the sect one belongs to.
What one has to keep in mind and focus, is the attaining of anuttara samyak sambodhi.
May all living being be free from suffering.

Mahāyāna Buddhism has been mostly influenced by the local religions. In China, Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism merge together well. In Japan, it is said that a person is born a Shinto and dies a Buddhist. This is why Mahāyāna Buddhists worship boddhisattvas as deities and why they stress the Nirvana thing so much, almost similar to the Christian Heaven.

    • @AverageBuddhist88
      @AverageBuddhist88 9 месяцев назад +1

What? Bro, in the nicest way possible, this is completely wrong. Please do research. The worship of Bodhisattvas comes from Mahayana Scripture, that mainly came from revelations in India. Some Mahayana Sutras are also believed to have possibly been part of oral tradition dating back to the Lord Buddha Himself. Historians and scholars believe there were Mahayana ideas prominent in Buddhist community even before the 2nd Buddhist Council, so less than a hundred years after the death of Lord Buddha. If you think worshipping Bodhisattvas comes from China and Japan, then please explain why Mahayana Sutras from INDIA recommend it (e.g. Lotus Suta Chapter 25), and please explain why the first Chinese pilgrims to India wrote that they saw INDIAN monks worshipping Bodhisattvas. Also, if you think Pure Land Buddhism was influenced by Christianity, then that is even more historically wrong. The first mention of pure lands of Buddhas is found in the Mahāvastu, which is believed to have started being composed in the 2nd Century BCE. 200 years before Jesus was even born 😂😂. Also there are plenty of other Mahayana Sutras which reference pure lands and Amitabha which were composed before Christianity came to India, or composed in areas where Christianity didn't immediately reach when it did come to India. Please do more research on Mahayana.

    • @topazbutterfly1853
      @topazbutterfly1853 9 месяцев назад

@@AverageBuddhist88 I didn’t say this. I was refering to the fact that worshipping the Bodhisattvas wasn’t a strange practice for the local populations, because they already had local gods. For example, in Japan, the Shinto gods are also considered Bodhisattvas and vice versa. If you think about it, the worshipping tradition in India dates back to Hinduism. The Bodhisattvas are purely Buddhist, but the practices were nothing new. Also, I didn’t say Pure Land is the equivalent of Heaven in Christianity. I was referring to the similarity in the way that Pure Land Buddhists pray and hope to be reborn in Amitabha’s land with the prayers and hopes of Christians to ascend to Heaven after death. This is a long discussion, and I think I might not have the right words to avoid confusion. As a converted Buddhist, I also worship the Bodhisattvas, while also understanding that they are also illusionary, beings just like us, born from Rigpa and empty in nature.

I still don't agree with your first sentence, that it was mostly influenced by local religions, but I do generally understood what you were saying how, about the practice of worshipping Bodhisattvas wasn't a new thing. Also yeah I understand what you were saying about the Pure Land practices, it's just that I have had many people tell me the Pure Land ideas and practices were directly influenced by Christianity, so I assumed you meant that because many people do believe that. Also btw, I am also a convert Buddhist who worships Bodhisattvas

Mahanaya Buddhism is painted with Sanatan culture, the culture of India. Lotus Sutra is something that is even recorded in sanatan texts. Brahma the eternal being existing within every being. He sits in a meditative pose on a lotus. Compassion for all beings is probably the best teaching of both sanatan and buddha. No philosophy can be higher than caring for animals, insects, every living being. Imagine a person who cares so much for a insect, how much would he care for another person.
Let this teaching be the only teaching that religions have to offer because this is the core value humanity. Don't be divided by sects, religions, sex, colour, race and see everything that is false falling around you. You see truth you are enlightened.

I think Zen or meditation are very important for humanity. I think it would be good if television and radio all over the world set up a short meditation time and broadcast it every day. Now, regarding Mahayana Buddhism, I think it also teaches about life and the universe. I discovered the following from each sect of Japanese Mahayana Buddhism.
    - The Pure Land sect has a hierarchical universe called the three thousand worlds.
It's the same as the real universe. The Buddha lands (that is, the planets of enlightened beings) exist like the sand of the Ganges River there. And far beyond there is the Pure Land of Bliss. In other words, there are countless intelligent life forms of advanced civilizations in the universe, and heaven actually exists.
    - Esoteric Buddhism sects preach compassion and wisdom by the Super Buddha personified the universe. Since humans are born in the universe, we are part of this Buddha. In other words, we are Buddhas in birth. We should be aware of this and live our daily lives.
    - The Lotus Sutra teaches that a Buddha from the distant past was born on this earth
as Shakyamuni Buddha. This is the truth of life that only Buddhas and Buddhas can discuss. It foreshadows the life creation through DNA.
    - The Avatamsaka Sutra(called Kegon-Kyou in Japan) teaches that there is a universe even
within a dust. This means that our universe is also in a gigantic particle. In other words,
it teaches that the reality of the universe is a fractal multiverse.
    - Buddhism predicts that Buddhism itself will disappear and that Maitreya Bodhisattva will
save humanity 5.67 billion years from now. Isn't this a prophecy for the lifespan of the sun
in an age when interplanetary flight is possible?
In addition to the above, since Brahma was involved in Shakyamuni Buddha's enlightenment, Buddhism must be a teaching came from the sky for the awakening of humanity. In other words, I believe that Buddhism, whether it is Hinayana Buddhism or Mahayana Buddhism, is a teaching of human awakening that is common to galactic civilizations.

In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. In Pidhauli (Vaishali) the local deity is Bardiha Baba. Bardiha means the Baba who didn't allow us to stay where he was staying. Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama.

@@buddhaexhumed9922 There were thousands of Buddhas. Buddha simply means "one above the interllect" and buddhi means "one below the interllect". No doubt there was a Buddha in Bihar, and yes people love to ignore the fact that buddhism would have never evolved outside of India because it literally was created out of what we call hinduism now.
But in my view neither "hinduism" or "buddhism" really ever were religions, but they kind of became religions. I think originally hinduism was just the culture of the land that the persians saw behind the hindukush and buddhism was a philosophy within this culture.

Beware of taking the visual representations from scenes painted on canvas (where RUclips person picks out and presents someone has illustration of what is being said) but that is simply not true.) You should not use the THaNKSs where is copied and presented here as illustrations for what is said on the soundtrack.

It was created by Lord Buddha. Many sutras have signs of being oral transmissions in the same way the Pali ones have. What evidence is there that the Pali ones go back to the Lord, but not the Mahayana ones?
