If u want a good quality cheap gun buy Euro spray guns they around 200$ and the reason I have orange peel is because u need to regulate ur air pressure and try to lay out ur clear better tht way when U buff u would only have to take a few diets out always to minimize the dirts on ur clear wet ur floor around ur car and if u want to get better results block sand ur bindi and only primer the part where a repair was made also u can use a dealer to better hide the imperfections another thing if u have a compressor get a air powered d.a sander but tbh for a beginner car is not half bad💯💯
@@shawnhorton3870 the most important thing is to get that smooth surface and reducing layers of paint. You will still primer it once getting down to that layer.
A tip when spraying metallics is on the final color coat lay paint down like a spaz so the flakes will sparkle at all angles. Also be sure to ask your paint dealer what color of primer works best for the color you want. Primer can drastically change the final color of the car. He doesn't stress this enough but a paint job is only as good as the prep work. My autobody teacher always said look with your hands you will feel alot of imperfections you cant see. Take your time your literally creating a art piece and if you mess up no biggie you can always sand it down and correct it. 👍👍
also paints require a certain sealer that should be on the paint can, and yeah with metallics it's crucial to have even speed and distance and the final coat is a fast dusting to even it out the metallics so it won't look streaky.
My biggest recommendation is 2k clear. It will knock down on sooo much of the orange peel and dimpling. You can lay the final coat on almost wet so it levels out really well. It's a great help with home/garage jobs as it makes up for the lack of static filters and negative pressure flow.
A+ for effort and taking the time to post. I would not stop spraying halfway down a pane. Start at the bottom so you can make sure you have coverage, then go all the way down the side while watching your overlaps. Also, keep your spray pattern dead on with the panel. Dont turn the gun sideways. Keep doin it, you're well on your way to pro status.
If you want a smoother finish always use guide coat on the primer then sand down with 500 grit. The base coat will lay out much nicer to avoid the the orange peel. Good vid tho 👍🏼
I've done a few garage paint jobs and I'm getting ready to help my son paint a foxbody convertible. When you clean the garage the first time I would use a leaf blower, a latter, and a big shop fan. A good hour of blowing out the garage from top to bottom will prevent dust from falling on the paint. It's a pain, but well worth the time.
Your Mrs is a trooper. Keeper. I love this more practical guide to painting. I've sprayed 3 car in my garage when I was younger, with an even smaller compressor!
Definitely block body work you can use a sander to knock it down but at the end use a block and guide coat to check for creases or waves. Also would recommend foam taping the jams so you don’t get over spray in there and if there’s any type of hardline take a wooden stick softly with the edge along it to knock it down.
Hey I know this is an old video but I strongly suggest not washing a car with water when you have filler exposed. At my shop we’ll typically used a solvent based cleaner to prep for primer then wash after sanding primer. Body filler absorbs water and can cause many issues
Hey mate nice effort 👌 one thing to keep in mind is never wet the body filler!! It's very porous and if there's any water left in it before you prime or paint, you'll have big issues down the track. Also if you block your primer out, then finish the final sand in a higher grit like 500 or 600 for metallic paint, you'll get a better finish 👍 keep up the good work
The reason you want to scratch/sand the original paint is to give the new paint something to grab on to. I wouldn't reccomend painting on top of old paint without sanding, your paint will flake like crazy. Sanding is like taking down to substrate, whether you see it or not your creating micro pockets which the paint fills/adheres to vs flat surface. Also alot of orange peel is because your spraying too close and too much. The excess spray is being pushed by the air from your gun. There's a perfect point where your not getting dry spray and your not getting orange peel, I would suggest dialing in your sprayer on paper first to check your fan and the amount coming out, this will help with the speed you should be spraying/moving your hand. Try and stay at those same speeds throughout the whole job.
This is awesome. But usually when I paint a car I like to do the roof and corners first, just so my next coats I can cover the overspray look. But this was sweet
Fiberglass water proof tougher easier to to do. If there's holes in body I get thin sheet metal and weld new rivits in grind em down and fiberglass over it beautiful. Haven't had any issues done 7 months ago.
I have 2 cars I am working on to paint at a later date. This video is really cool and has helped me a lot. Also it's nice to see when a guy's girlfriend takes an interest in the hobby too. makes it more fun. great job you 2.
Hey. I don't have a harbor freight spray gun, but I do have a really cheap one. When it stops working how it is supposed to, you need to take it all apart and clean every bit. Then it should start working good again.
So in reality painting a car is easy? I really want to try this but I don’t have a car yet and I don’t even have the materials for this but I do want to learn
Thanks for the video! It's good to hear a diy experience. I'm about to attempt it myself. One question -- how was the overspray? Especially outside in the driveway, etc. I'm going to crack my garage door and use 2 box fans with filters to try and extract the air, but I'm worried the neighborhood will end up lightly misted with paint
in my experience as long as you cover up the important stuff you DEFINITELY dont want overspray on your fine because you can brush off a lot of the dust that left. but make sure you mask off anything you dont want over spray on because its annoying getting it off
I like how you included the incidental items like sander/paper, shop fan and plastic sheeting. Beginner’s like me tend to only price in paint, primer and gun. Seems like everything cost you about $1,000
how do you all have these insane houses with good driveways, nice streets and 2 car garages :o i'm from Belgium btw, wish i lived in a house like yours

Can you explain exactly what cut & buffing means? I’m assuming you mean buffering the paint out with a wax but does that really smoothen the paint job out?
You may have said this in the video and I missed it, but how much did it cost you for everything? My car's clearcoat is all peeling off so I'm gonna have to sand it all down, reprimer it, and paint
A couple of things. 1 get a bigger air compressor. Once you start painting you don't want to stop because 2. Start and leave a wet edge to your paint and it will eliminate tigerstriping and checker pattern. 3 lay down clear in a thick layer as it will eliminate most if not all orange peel
This is the video I've been looking for! So many other videos discourage me because they all look so professional. The fact that your Bondo job look like dog shit really gave me the courage to try it myself and that's not a diss because in the end the paint job came out pretty good. And it's way better than paying someone 6 or 7,000 or paying Maaco for a job you really could have done at home for much cheaper. Maaco wanted almost 3k for my 89 OBS pick up😮

My question, were you able to run non stop, or did you have to stop occasionally and let the pressure build back up.

Use compressed air to blow off dust and after that cleaning solvent instead of using pressure washer.
@BeaKhan I have spent months researching into spray painting and found a great resource at Magic Painter Method (check it out on google)

As a professional painter bro always sand down to at least primer to get smoother finish
You know the saying: a good paint job is 90% prep, 10% paint
Would it then be better to sand the car then primer the entire car?

When you’re sanding, set up a couple cheap box fans with 20” x 20” furnace air filters on the suction side. It really cuts down on the dust.
watering the ground also helps contain dust.
