I work for a phone support company for Virgin Media. The hub 3 is awful, from customers and my own experience. Note the minimum download speeds are to the router, not though wifi. Run your Deco mesh network with the Hub 4 & use the 192.168.0.1 to adjust your WiFi on 5GHz 160mhz, upgrade your laptop WiFi pci-mini to AX210. So you can get 1gbps on your Lappy

I had hub 2ac for years and always had 100 mb download recently upgraded to 200 mb every time I try to see if I’m entitled to upgrading to hub 3 it doesn’t let me know is the hub 3 any much better then 2ac
Definetly an improvement for me, I can't get WiFi the other side of my home, have the boosters and since they sent me a hub 4 it reaches all over and more with usual high speed 120mbps when I only pay for 100 😁
I'm in Birmingham & I'm paying £25 for M200 18m contract broadband only, but I've noticed when I invested in a TP-LINK RE605X it eliminated all the WiFi dead zones in my 6 Bedroom home. I tried out the lower model RE505X but it's not good as the RE605X. On 5GHZ only 20/40/80/160mhz channel in the Hub 4 settings.
I was thinking of upgrading my hub3 to hub4. I have dead spots in my house and use a tenda nova mesh network but over time the tenda nova speed drops like a stone and needs a complete reset. A reason I haven't worked out why yet. I thought the hub4 would allow me to bin the tenda Nova mesh but clearly not it seems........
Hello mate I’ve got a virgin media hub3 that won’t let me use the Wi-Fi, any idea how I can fix it? When I logo in to the Wi-Fi it drops off then on then off then on.
Hey mate - I've not experienced this before - have you tried some troubleshooting from google recommendations? xtrium.com/virgin-media-wifi-keeps-dropping/
Did you use the shit cable they ship it with for hardline check? (If so it ships with cat 5...... you need to buy a cat 6 or 7 cable really) Are you using 2.5 or 5ghz for WiFi....
I used the one they provide, but I also bought a set of 5x CAT 7 cables to connect too as well. I have 5Ghz set for WiFi as well. I've recently added a TP-Link Pro Mesh network to extend coverage, which does help with speeds, but its only fast in the room of the router. Every other room is about 50% or less.
Hub 4 way better than 3 for me, constant issues with tablets and smart devices loosing signal. with Hub 3. Since change no issues at all good signal in all rooms and even in garden sun house which before had to use repeater.

Only the newer Hub 3, will have to wait for new TV box after installation of the Hub 3, which arrived yesterday. Managed to get it up and running on all devices with help from experts here on YT. This also showed me that the Hub 3 is ancient tech, over six years old. I then had long winded online text conversations with various Virgin Media agents who eventually told me that Hub 4 is only for customers on 500mbs to 1gb. The Hub 3 appears to be working ok so far but it’s disappointing to be fobbed off with old kit, and I’ll have apply again for a new TV box. Maybe it will be free?
@@TrendingReviews you are aware that diffrent laptops have diffrent WiFi cards which could impede the results u get. Which makes the test useless. I would suggest u use the same device in all the rooms to get a more accurate results.
That was the first test I did. What I'm saying is I later tried the tests with a different laptop in all the rooms, after I did that first with my Macbook - so it definitely was accurate.
I got upgraded from the hub3 to the hub 4 this weeks. The oculus quest 2 (airlink) worked flawlessly with the hub 3. Hub 4 was utter garbage, and that’s literally a few feet away from the playing area. Ran through everything customer service recommended from both virgin and oculus. Made no difference. Oddly enough, the hub 4 speeds are significantly faster than the hub 3 *shrug*
Hub 3/4 WiFi will be utter poo. For any ISP in general you should invest in a decent router and put the ISP provided kit into modem only mode! Trust me - you won't look back! Absolute best is to buy a pfsense based router and then buy separate WiFi access points, but that's advanced mode stuff for if you can really be bothered. But it does pay off :)
Don’t forget to add your DNS settings guys, doing is maxed out my broadband speeds, i went from 34 megabytes to 365 megabytes, only use the DNS settings that match your providers DNS settings.
Had this problem too got a tech out and they said the hub 4 works on a different frequency and solved the problem . nice Guy try calling virgin and getting them to send a technician out
You should seperate your wireless channels so all your devices can connect to 5ghz network. Your devices will always connect the the most stable network witch is the 2.4ghz network rather than the faster 5ghz network
Unless you're using devices like wireless CCTV cameras, doorbell cameras, smart plugs and light bulbs - they all use the 2.4 ghz signal as it has the greatest range.
You didn't leave the settled time limit for the speeds to sort there self out. You left it 15 minutes to test it out. I bet now you got on point speeds ......!!!!!
Thanks for the nice content. I never trust the routes provided by IP companies so I got 2x TP-LINK Archer VR2800 for the ground floor and 1st floor hard-wired from virgin media router and I switched off wifi from virgin media router, all other devices like TVs, Pcs, CCTV connected through a cable to Vr2800, the result: BIG DIFERENCE
I pay for 200mb a month with Virgin. Hub 3 under 50mb no probs but every upgrade of faster speeds it crashed daily. VM never told you why just messed about. Like you I made the HUB 3 a modem, then connected a Tenda router and now I never crash, download speeds of 24mb at times and has taken away the bottle neck of too much trying to coem through a crap old hub not built for it.
well, my hub 3 wifi is useless it was dropping down to dial-up speed, do reset it works better for maybe a day,i think something is getting hot maybe then not working well. so i have put a tp link router to the virgin one and you know it it works and stayed working for many years,i am only saying about the wifi side,
Do not use either the hub 3 or hub 4 as an actual router, both are awful. On the other hand buy a proper router and stick either of them into modem mode and they'll do just fine.
@@UmbroKhan if you want a consumer all in one, something like a TP-Link AX5400 Dual-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Router would probably do just fine, perhaps with additional mesh wifi units if needed. I'm not big on super expensive "gaming routers" as I think it's a bit of a con. On the other hand, if you're looking to go further with your networking and willing to invest a bit of timing learning then pfsense hardware router (you can buy these pre-installed on netgate devices) plus a solid WiFi Access Point (not router) will give you the best in terms of stability, scalability etc.
@@UmbroKhan P.S. For the best connections - wired ethernet is advised plugging into the router, you want Cat6A cabling at the very least (but no harm going further up to Cat 7, 8 etc.)
With respect the video doesn't really compare both in detail . There's a number of factors not took into consideration . Rather than have a merged 2.4 and 5 G or plus try separating them maybe would help . Then putting a device on the preferred connection . playing with the routers setting also helps in most cases . Overall i never use virgins wifi as they never are reliable. I'm using an Orbi router with 2 satellites and i get over the top speeds every time . If i was to recommend a Wifi router it would definitely be an Orbi . Mind you they are expensive. I get signals and high speeds in the yard . Using the hubs wifi as standard then you'll always have problems no matter what Hub it is .
No that speed isn't normal lol I bought a Asus router with 5G only channel turned on and use my hub 3 as a modem the difference is night and day, I'm on M500 and I get 530avr in same room on my iPhone then just in the next room straight through a wall I can get 430-510.
Get a virgin engineer to attend your home to lay down fresh white upgraded coaxial copper cable, "Fibre 🤣". if you got bends in that cable existing one, it takes a toll on the speed you get.
Virgin Media do FTTP. I live in one those areas. The only coax part is from the terminator point on the front of the house to the modem/router inside. I used to be on Virgin’s coax from the cab network and can say that their fibre to the home has none of the pitfalls or issues of the old coax to the cab setup. So, to dispel what you might be proposing… Virgin do provide FTTP. Right now it’s only available to about 1.5 million of their customers. The decent thing about the Hub4 is by having it that if you live in a purely coax area you’ll be reducing the congestion on your neighbours.
I've just upgraded/downgraded to the gig hub4, I am getting faster wifi speeds than my ethernet connections all with cat 6a cables to gigabit devices qe been back and forth for months which I caught there engineer on audio tape explaining all the problems, then my complaint agent tells me all is fine the engineer said its all good when I have him on tape to the contrary we are now at deadlock and will be making a case to ofcom and cisas till my problem is fixed 20 Yr customer too shady goings on ive been getting unbelievable!!
Pointless test on day 1 and straight away after plugging in hub 4. It's obvious it's going to be slow as it needs 7 days if usage to be optimised properly
Makes no odds when the broadband fails, we get charged more for shit speeds, the fact is we want consistant functions, so your upgrade was not worth it, blagged by VM again lmao
Incorrect - I tested both with the laptop right next to the router, same range. If the speed doesn't increase at all when you're right next to the router, then whats the point of having range at all?
why is there always small print with companies, why is always other side of the coin with everything, why is there no protection nor proper punishment to these companies...??? why do we pay wages of people in parliament, why do we pay taxes...???
Okay, I cannot watch this any further because I'm getting agitated by this video. First of all Virgin Media don't guarantee the advertised speed you won't get it. You have to take into account CAP on your connection, On-Peak and Off-Peak Times. WiFi will always drop in performance by about 35% do having a wired connection instead of WiFi is much better more reliable. Running a speed that St us pointless especially if you are running the rest in Peak Times the speed test would be inconclusive. Use the Cable Modem in Modem Mode and use a separate Route. Connect an RJ45 cable to Port 4 of the Cable Modem connect the other end to the WAN Port/Internet Port on your router. Now the Cable Modem is just a Cable Modem only all your connections go via the router and not the VM SH4. I've had a cable modem for 20 years I have always used a separate router.
No one gets 500 megaBYTE or 1000 megaBYTE speeds. It's MegaBIT. Also, don't use browser based speed testers because your CPU starts to struggle. Use a native app to do the speed test. Especially on Gigabit connections,
Just had Virgin upgrade my Hub 2 to a Hub 3. The engineer said the 5 is the best and the 3 is better than the 5. Frankly the 3 is shite as well. The Virgin hubs are crap. Stick them into modem mode and buy a proper router.

Using different servers to test against, for a reliable test you should be using the same server for all tests

Run your Deco mesh network with the Hub 4 & use the 192.168.0.1 to adjust your WiFi on 5GHz 160mhz, upgrade your laptop WiFi pci-mini to AX210. So you can get 1gbps on your Lappy
Well Done , it's a true example we should not believe when companies advertise a product they cannot offer. It's down to Independent Good Reviews like this we find out the truth !
read comment above.
I had hub 2ac for years and always had 100 mb download recently upgraded to 200 mb every time I try to see if I’m entitled to upgrading to hub 3 it doesn’t let me know is the hub 3 any much better then 2ac
Definetly an improvement for me, I can't get WiFi the other side of my home, have the boosters and since they sent me a hub 4 it reaches all over and more with usual high speed 120mbps when I only pay for 100 😁
How much u paying for M100 I'm paying 44 a month
@@DANE89 I've got TV too with a bundle and 100mb, phoneline which isn't used £39 a month.
@@i.a565 how do you pay £25 for M200
Not for me, works fine at ranges, it’s probably because your using the 5 GHz
I was thinking of upgrading my hub3 to hub4. I have dead spots in my house and use a tenda nova mesh network but over time the tenda nova speed drops like a stone and needs a complete reset. A reason I haven't worked out why yet. I thought the hub4 would allow me to bin the tenda Nova mesh but clearly not it seems........
im having the same issue with the nova mw6 :/
Hello mate
I’ve got a virgin media hub3 that won’t let me use the Wi-Fi, any idea how I can fix it?
You'll get even more if you make it a modem and connect a super fast router to it. Did this and all the bottle neck has gone.
@@JB12132 Agree, HUB 4 performance slowly became problematic. As you said about 6 months ago got an Asus router and signal is great everywhere.
Any recommendation a router or do I have buy a cheap mesh system? Only living in a small place
What did vm say? I’ve had the same experience! And have downgraded to 500. Nothing but a pain to deal with vm.
They couldn't resolve it, so I downgraded back to 500GB again. Pretty disappointing tbh
@@TrendingReviews can I ask was you allowed to go back to your original package at the same price? When I rang to cancel I was told I had to pay more. New customer so had discount and my price was £59.00 per month which included m350, 2 tv boxes and weekend calls first package before the gig 1 upgrade. when I cancelled my gig 1 they wanted £67.00 per month. Wasn’t happy at all. In the end went for the m500 with tv and phone for £72.00 per month with some sort of discount. Not happy with the customer service I’ve received!
I've just been offered the new Hub 4 (OLD TECH) Just joking from my old hub 3. I will give it A go see if it's better
Mines due Friday A new Toy to play with. It does make me laugh tho we all pump in £100s a month to Virgin media.....They make zillions and Give us old Techology! Humans Don't deserve old tech lol
My ancient TiVo box is playing up. Then the very old Hub 2 failed intermittently so called help. Nice gent in Bangalore call centre promised a replacement.
Maybe it will be free?
idk if its just my area but i always have many issues with Virgin Media, including now, with high packet loss every few seconds/minutes
there is a newer version of speedtest, for higher speeds.
Can you share?
I’m getting the hub4 but my deco m9 mesh is staying on is there any point in getting it?
I have the Hub4 + a set of 4x Deco M9 Mesh set up around the house. With the Hub4, you will still definitely need it!
@@TrendingReviews when you put it in modem mode for the deco, does the hub actually do anything?
Are you using the same laptop for each test or a diffrent one?
I tried 2 Macbooks, 1 Windows Laptop, and my phone. All produce same/similar results.
Can anyone explain why my superhub 3 consistently gets 200 download speed when yours gets over 500? I’m not great with technology
it is the package you are paying for, I get 200 because I am paying for 200 speed...
Is it possible for you to connect it via ethernet cable
Is it possible for you to connect it via ethernet cable
Hub 3/4 WiFi will be utter poo.
For any ISP in general you should invest in a decent router and put the ISP provided kit into modem only mode! Trust me - you won't look back!
Absolute best is to buy a pfsense based router and then buy separate WiFi access points, but that's advanced mode stuff for if you can really be bothered.
But it does pay off :)
Has it improved at all since you wrote this?
Exact same issue here, upgraded to 1gig a few months ago, not been able to use airlink since.
Don’t forget to add your DNS settings guys, doing is maxed out my broadband speeds, i went from 34 megabytes to 365 megabytes, only use the DNS settings that match your providers DNS settings.
Changing your DNS doesn't increase your speeds 🤣
Did for me :)
Had this problem too got a tech out and they said the hub 4 works on a different frequency and solved the problem . nice Guy try calling virgin and getting them to send a technician out
Do you know how they solved the problem?
You should seperate your wireless channels so all your devices can connect to 5ghz network. Your devices will always connect the the most stable network witch is the 2.4ghz network rather than the faster 5ghz network
Unless you're using devices like wireless CCTV cameras, doorbell cameras, smart plugs and light bulbs - they all use the 2.4 ghz signal as it has the greatest range.
Do a hub 5 vid
Ethernet will always be better than WiFi. 🤦♂️
I think we all know that
@@TheYomanda Why reply if that's the case then? 🤔 🤦♂️ 😂
@@TheCheshireCat. because you commented the obvious
lets be real though, who will ever need 1gb download on your phone or smart tv like, the only time you may need gigabit is for a pc or xbox/ps4
The moral of the story: never use wi-fi, and if you have not other choice, always use third party devices instead of the hub.
Which router you recommend for a 4 bedroom house?
In a nutshell all Virgin Routers are shite!! PERIOD!!
Great Video though. Thanks.
not with the hubs i have used ! i also have used other routers by TP LINK and others. Your blanket statement is incorrect.
Great man I got same problem
No that speed isn't normal lol I bought a Asus router with 5G only channel turned on and use my hub 3 as a modem the difference is night and day, I'm on M500 and I get 530avr in same room on my iPhone then just in the next room straight through a wall I can get 430-510.
How about speaking up a bit or sorting your microphone out ?
Damn
You can get the gig1 fibre with hub4
I did, and it was slower than the 500MB Fibre on Hub 3 - that is what I am showing in the video.
It's Megabits not Megabytes.
Upload speed is not even 10% of the download thats our real problem...
Very true - I upload all my RUclips videos I shoot in 4K to dropbox, and it takes ages. :(
It’s because upload only sits on 4 upstream frequencies whereas the download has much more downstream frequencies.
Virgin Coax Cable can handle speeds of 8GB ps tried with bridge 2gb x 4accounts because speed are required
Hub 4 the best of the best Wi-Fi range very good and stable
It's "megabits" NOT megabytes
I've just upgraded/downgraded to the gig hub4, I am getting faster wifi speeds than my ethernet connections all with cat 6a cables to gigabit devices qe been back and forth for months which I caught there engineer on audio tape explaining all the problems, then my complaint agent tells me all is fine the engineer said its all good when I have him on tape to the contrary we are now at deadlock and will be making a case to ofcom and cisas till my problem is fixed 20 Yr customer too shady goings on ive been getting unbelievable!!
Change it from the 44 channel default to 36 for higher speed performance 5GHz mode only 20/40/80/160.
Pointless test on day 1 and straight away after plugging in hub 4. It's obvious it's going to be slow as it needs 7 days if usage to be optimised properly
Completely incorrect information. This isn't ADSL technology
Makes no odds when the broadband fails, we get charged more for shit speeds, the fact is we want consistant functions, so your upgrade was not worth it, blagged by VM again lmao
It's not going to make the range any better that's what the problem is it is not the speed you have a problem with it is the range.
Incorrect - I tested both with the laptop right next to the router, same range. If the speed doesn't increase at all when you're right next to the router, then whats the point of having range at all?
Megabits not megabytes. Come one it's not rocket science.
why is there always small print with companies, why is always other side of the coin with everything, why is there no protection nor proper punishment to these companies...??? why do we pay wages of people in parliament, why do we pay taxes...???
Not to mention was his new package active, and was the hub set up on the same channels.
@@SightsWithSteve yes
No one gets 500 megaBYTE or 1000 megaBYTE speeds. It's MegaBIT. Also, don't use browser based speed testers because your CPU starts to struggle. Use a native app to do the speed test. Especially on Gigabit connections,
sunday afternoon IS a busy time !
Also I think you need your network reset by virgin media you also need to activate it
Just had Virgin upgrade my Hub 2 to a Hub 3. The engineer said the 5 is the best and the 3 is better than the 5. Frankly the 3 is shite as well. The Virgin hubs are crap. Stick them into modem mode and buy a proper router.
Short answer: no because the hub 4 WiFi is gash compared to hub 3. If you only use ethernet, crack on
All depends where you live I suppose 😊
