Virgin: "Hey customers, Please try out our new Superhub 5!"
[Volt Gig1 Customers calls up]
Customer: "Hey, can I try it?"
Virgin: "No."
King of false advertising. Its bang out of order listing a hub 5 and not giving it to customers. They had me on ultimate volt and couldn't process a hub 5 but said they'd ring back the next day but didn't.
Honestly want to go to of on or something about it as its very misleading. Now they say they are upgrading older hubs on lesser packages or its out of stock due to chip shortage or other excuses.
Only reason I'm still with them is due to price being very cheap now.
@@craigst6755getting mine on Wednesday
Thank you for the detailed review. This video motivated me to contact VM last night as we have their Gig1 Ultimate Volt bundle with a Hub 4 and one WiFi Pod. The Hub 4 gets very hot and I wasn't impressed with it (I think it was a refurbished model anyway). VM has issued a Hub 5 replacement free of charge arriving next week, without affecting the contract, which I wasn't expecting. Also, I found the WiFi Pods are the same as Plume's and support Ethernet backhaul. Therefore, I ran a CAT 7 cable between the Hub downstairs and where the Pod is located, increasing its WiFi performance from ~100Mbps via mesh to well over 600Mbps.
Thank you for sharing this information! Glad you found the video useful!
What's the lights? White one then green? Old one had 5gz sign wifi arrows. This nothing just corner lights? How do u know whats going on? Thanks
When do hub 5 gig 1 customers get the new “in trial” gig 2 speeds and package and will us hub 5 owners get the free upgrade of gig 2 (2,200 mbps) when it comes out or do we have to select the package itself on the website and call up virgin or will it be automatically applied and set for hub 5 gig 1 customers ?
We have had issues with connection whenever it rains since we moved 2 years ago. Either cuts out completely or is awful.
HI I just found your video thanks , I have just received the hub 5, so hopefully i will notice an upgrade from my second super hub 3 ???
Fantastically helpful video, thank you!
We're moving shortly, and Virgin is available there (currently with BT, while speeds aren't always the best, their customer service is brilliant in my opinion) so looking forward to getting Gig with Virgin.
With the BT extenders, you just had to call them and they took your word for it and sent them out - It's crazy that Virgin have to send someone out - I want full bars in every room like I do with BT!
Virgin media customer service is the worst I've ever come across! Don't get me wrong, when the Internet is working as usual I have no problem but if you ever need to contact Virgin media then good luck! It's either automated crap or you get put through to a call centre in India were you can't understand them and they can't understand you. Once you are signed up to Virgin and they are taking your money, they couldn't give a fuck about you. Another thing to consider is the speed your devices are actually capable of, before the Virgin 1gig package im currently on i was on the m500 package (500meg) where all my devices could get nearly the full 500mbps speed and sometimes over 500. The new 1gig package and new hub5 i now have can still only achieve the same speed as the previous virgin package! I know that is down to the devices im using not able to receive wifi 6. But anyone thinking about getting virgin 1gig broadband should make sure that their devices are capable of getting the speed. Never tried any devices connected to ethernet as my hub5 is not near to any of my devices. I'm 1 week into my new 1gig package and already thinking of downgrading my package back to the M500 and saving some money as I can't get the speed of the new package and can't afford to upgrade all my devices to wifi 6.
Literally had the Hub5 fitted this morning in place of a Hub3 and already seeing a huge improvement in speed not only Wifi but also direct conection speed☺👍
Hello mate, waiting for our hub 5. So great video in anticipation. Wondering - what is the equaliser you spoke about?
I would suggest when it's adverse weather more people are indoors and therefore demands on the wide area infrastructure will be much higher.
Can anyone tell me why when I had VM gig1 it did not come in Boxes, are they Reconditions 😮
How many pods you use and how big is your home
Interesting thankyou. Have a Samsung mobile, as you have said, always problems connecting
What’s the equaliser for
Thank for the informative video.
Can I ask question about the ‘equaliser’ you have plugged into the hub 5 before the cable goes inside? What is it? What does it do?
Virgin media engineer put that on, to manage the frequency levels, I think.
mine is gig1 but im only getting 800,any ideas ?
Just received a Hub 5 and it won't connect, I've tried everything and Virgin weren't very helpful 😢
Thanks for this, really helpful, cheers!!
My internet kept on droppin out so enginier came out , took wire out of router an plugged it in his test device said somthing wrong here never seen a connection so low , changed all the wires went down the black box came bsck said it sorted now but think because its bin that bad now its overworked the hub 3 , so ill give you the hub 5 , so now am on hub 5 but only pay fir 125 m , but virgin only give to 1gb customers , question is , us that ok , speeds wifi 54 m
Just had the 5 installed replacing the rubbish 3. It’s like night and day. Excellent range and stable fast speeds. Very happy with it.
My mum just got the 3 and we had to get an amazon eero to boost the range a bit. Few days later she got an email for a free 18 month upgrade from 500 to gig1 plan 😂😂
Ah, was hoping that you included a review of the GUI capabilities. The Hub 4 is so restrictive. Would you mind answering if the Hub 5 allows me to configure DDNS? I'm guessing it doesn't, and so there will be little point in asking for the 4 to be switched out :(
Not that I can see, I'm using this in modem mode now.
Thanks for the review! Do you hear a fan working like on Hub 4? Also would you know if it uses more energy than Hub 3 or 4? thank you
no fan/fan noise. the energy usage is negligible or the same.
No fan noise.
Thanks, I have just done it got to reset all my Sonos and Amazon now as well as my Solar, lol thanks
I never notice Wi-Fi slowed down in rain. it is the same. I’m happy with my service.
HI When I try to get virgin to upgrade my Super Hub 3 , Virgin Say the Power levels are and so is the signal Strength ??
Are what?
The wet weather issue is interesting. I wonder if it is the exchange. I had issues recently intermittent connections and very poor connection at times and then when the national outage happened it seemed to go OK again. I wonder if there was an issue near the exchange they found on their way to fix it.
It sound strange to affect a cable but I believe you 100% and likely you listed the cause. If it affects the entire area perhaps some cables need updating.
I can't get a hub 5 despite them saying I'm eligible. They couldn't process it when I updated to ultimate volt. They told me they'd ring back and I believed the lady I spoke to but alas they didn't bother. Now they say chip shortage so can't give it out and upgrading older hubs first which I suppose I'd fine if defective but too packages should be a priority IMO with the money paid and they advertise it. Honestly thinking if mentioning it to ofcom or whoever the regulator is as it is plain false advertising IMO.
Do the super pods work with it btw? I've read conflicting information whether they will work the the hub 5 or not.
I'm d probably ring them again and mention your issues. If you do that when they announce a price rise you should be able to haggle money off your bill sometimes just going to retentions department and may not even have to speak to someone to get money off. The offer may be lower if you don't talk to them though and also you have a right to cancel when price rises are announced within 30 days I think (possibly 30 days notice).
Anysay thanks for the vid and glad your happy with it (weather permitting)
Any gamers on can tell me do you still get packet loss while gaming
I've got this but it's only on Wifi 5 so my mesh network (that's also Wifi 6) doesn't run at full speed. Any ideas?
If your devices support wi-fi 6 the hub will broadcast wi-fi 6
Hi Please,My Door Bell, smart plugs and most of my devices only work on 2.4ghz.I changed to Hub 5 yesterday and all these devices stopped working. Please,is there any way i could switch this hub to 2.4 because i had both 2.4 and 5ghz on the Hub 4 that i was using before but,i cant seem to find this option on this Hub 5.Thanks
It's the same way to split the bands as you did with the Hub 4 however even then your IOT devices might not work as I mentioned in the video compatibility issues with this hub
Evening your videos are very clear, can you advise me on how I Split my VM 2.4ghz & 5ghz please. Thank you 👍
Thank you! You will need to login to the Hub.
Hi I dont know were you live but i was with virgin got some little problems so soon bt instal fibre in my location i change to bt 500gb fibre and belive or note was worse than the 250gb on virgin also they told me over the phone that my monthly prive will be cap for 2 years after 3 months a raise in the price come and now the put up again and every time is like 7 pounds i cant wait to get back to virgin
Unfortunately water ingress affects the signal on both VM and OR networks, on some instances the pits ( footway manholes) become flooded, VM’s RG6 seal is much better than the OR network as they still use scotchlok connectors, (jellies) to terminate the cables, these are prone to water ingress if submerged in water as the mineral oil used to seal the joint does deteriorate over time, causing drop outs.
What third party router and mesh would you recommend to get close to 1gig around the house?
This is the one we've been using, it's great! ruclips.net/video/lJpxhWD0fhM/видео.html
Anyone know how to put nord vpn on this box
just had gig1 installed, now i have to get 2.5g adaptor to gain full advantage, best to check with samknows to see the speed of your router compared with the speed of your computer ie 1145 on hub only 880 on pc due to 1000 mb network cards. there is always something to learn
How are you getting on?
@@GrumpyMansREVIEWS 1 gig is a brilliant way of opening new opportunities but using the full capability is even way beyond anything I could manage. You will need a mini pc with 2.5 GB network adaptors this is cheaper than buying a dedicated router and opened the possibilities up a little with easy nas proxmox and nginx proxy manager installed along with pfsense all is coming along nicely
@@collect0r Thanks for sharing!
I have the Hub 4 and Gig1. The internet is great however my room is the only room with very bad wifi signal... to the point where I need to put my computer in another room (not ideal).. Do you think the Hub 5 will help with this and if not can you please give me some recommendations on what to do
you are eligible for free plume pods, 3 max. call virgin. place first pod halfway between hub and your room and everything sorted. VM Engineer.
Ring Virgin and request a pod.
Thanks for answering these questions, I just seen them now, YT app is playing up.
Can you use the wifi pods with hub 5? I'm upgrading next week from the 4.
Yes you can, however Virgin media will have to pair the pods to the Hub 5.
Back in the old days that I worked for Virgin they used to have problem areas. These areas where because some pits in the pavements used to get flooded. They sent service techs out with diesel generators and pumps.
Good luck with your fibre.
Thank you for sharing!
My hub 5 arrives next week, so I'm putting it *straight* into modem mode. ISP routers are always a sack of balls anyway, so no matter what bells and whistles they claim I'm gonna just roll my own wifi. :)
Cheers for the video!
Thanks for your comment. It helps my argument against the wife as I spent a lot on the Asus Zenwifi Pro XT12 lol

@@GrumpyMansREVIEWS That's probably why I make RUclips videos on my other thing, as nobody here cares :D
Due to a slight issue I had, I use the Hub 5 for wifi too. Had an issue today, damn thing won't enable 5GHz and 2GHz is dodgy AF. Looks like I'm getting my old router back out again :/
HELP... can only get 0.5 mbps on tabA Samsung... everything else ok get between 18-35mbps but virgin say 350mbps ??? any advice
That's why I said in the video, I'm using my own Asus Zenwifi, we were having compatibility issues.
Which 3rd party router are you using? I think of getting Wi-Fi 6E router? Which one you recommend for 4 bedroom house?
This is great you can just get the single unit the ET12 wi-fi 6E around £400 ruclips.net/video/lJpxhWD0fhM/видео.html
I've just got mine and I'm getting worse ping than I did before. Any suggestions on how get it down
Ring Virgin Media, ask if the hub settings are correct on their end.
Why do you have an equaliser on your COAX cable?
Engineer put it on to balance my speeds.
I’ve just subscribed to the gig1 today.
Im currently on the 500 package previously which I already get 350bps upstairs in furthest room away via wifi using the hub 3 in modem mode and a TPLink Archer c5400x.
Be interesting to see what I get upgrade but I’ll need the Hub 5 for the 2.5 port to max out the TPLink router.
how is gig1 hub 5?
@@Ps-we3pp I’ve used the Hub 5 in modem mode as I had better range when I tested with my TP-Link Archer 5400(it’s not wifi 6 either).
Coming from the M500 speeds are better, would I say it’s worth the upgrade? Only if you can get a very very good price on 1gig if not don’t bother, I’m waiting for city fiber to do our street, then I’ll cancel and go with them I think.
Same here waiting for City Fibre. Thanks for sharing your experience!
@@GrumpyMansREVIEWS no problem maté you’re welcome, thanks for the review👍
would be nice if they gave me one been waiting for them to offer it since they released it
Virgin media have given this to me for free after being a gig1 user for some time. I use the Hub4 in modem mode with Unifi equipement which is a game changer, dont rely on VM's kit.
The issue is in the cables, although sealed in the main road box the fibre cables can get flooded, I guess through condensation.
I had complained for years.
Eventually after escalation to a VM Director and a week's of work the issue was solved.
So if seeing issues when raining complain!
Thank you!
Thanks for the review . we are opting for Virgin media in our new apt. Could you please tell us if it's easier to set up broadband ourselves or it is better to have the technician do it? what are the installation charges?
For new installations you will need an engineer. Don't know how much Virgin media charge, I think it's around £35 or free if they are running an offer.
@@GrumpyMansREVIEWS vm charge me for upgrade 35£ also. No chance how updated without any extra fees :/
I have the hub 5. Speed and range are incredible but it keeps dropping devices off WiFi and will not allow them to reconnect. I then set most devices to static which sorted it for a couple of days but then the same thing happened. Frustrating it's back in modem modem now but my own kit doesn't achieve the same speeds
Thank you for sharing your experience. I've just bought the Asus zenwifi pro xt12 it's early days yet but it's working fine.
you only get upto 20 devices or less on virgin gear - I added a mesh system and hey presto
I had around 15 however we are all on the internet at the same time, so I'm using Asus zenwifi pro xt12 now so far it's working fine. Which mesh system did you go with?
brilliant review of the hub 5. im having mine installed in november. 1gig package. hope it will be worth the money. do you think I should get wifi 6 pods from amazon for an upstairs PC or do you think the pods given are enough? liked and subbed btw can you give us updates on how it goes for you on the hub 5. thanks mate 👍
Thank you much appreciated! I'm working on a video on the Pods, honestly you can't go wrong with them, really good.
They give around 350Mbps.
Apparently if you negotiate with the sales people when you get new contract they can throw a pod in for free!
@@GrumpyMansREVIEWS love to get your feedback on the vm pod. I had been using sky booster it was hit and miss I am moving to virgin and asked for a pod I hope its range and speed is as good. Not expecting close to 1gig from the pods but even 200-400 be great
The Pods are really good, they WiFi 5 max speed around 340-350.
place pods in suitable location and they work perfectly. They are american engineered.
I’m having issues with some devices seeing it but not connecting. Had it suggested I need to split the 2.4 and 5! Anyone else had that issue ?
Alexa, Virgin tv box and Apple products are all good. Smart tv’s and older laptops are the issue ?!?
I’ve also noticed the intermittent connection when it’s raining. I don’t think it’s because more people are indoors creating a higher demand, as sometimes it has happened at the early hours of the morning, when most people are sleeping.
As an online gamer I usually get around the problem by hard wiring (using ethernet cable) instead of Wi-Fi.
I’ve just upgraded to the 1gig hub5 with Virgin and now have a guaranteed speed of 520mb at all times. Waiting to see if that fixes the issue. I’ll let you know.
Thank you for sharing your experience!
Any drop in speed or is it consistent
any update on this? i'm a gamer and currently on the 500mbps package with Hub3 and looking to upgrade to 1gb as my current one is garbage.
If you are getting a drop in connection during wet weather, that's probably because the cable connection between your router and the fibre backbone has some water ingress. When it flooded in my area Virgin broadband went down for 3 days. I would suggest swapping to another provider, such as BT or Vodaphone/City Fibre to see if they have the same problem.
We have one similar to this in our country, your right not bad.
Thank you for watching!
What does the coaxial equalizer do?
Virgin media engineer said it will improve signal strength
How have you found Samsung devices whilst hub 5 is in modem mode. Have the Samsung devices been working better ?
Hi yes they work absolutely fine, I've tried Netgear, Eero and now Asus zenwifi pro xt12.
@@GrumpyMansREVIEWS back I'm February this year there was an issue with Samsung devices not working with the hub 5 properly when using the hub 5 as primary router

Thank you for watching!
How do I get 2.5ghz wifi to come up in the list on phone
You need to split the wi-fi band's first and then it will show up on the phone.
I'm on Gig1, using the SH4 in modem mode, connected to an AX86U using Merlin Firmware, never had an speed issue. 🤷♂️
what speed do you get on devices and how far does the wifi reach?
@@yousafdiff My Asus is in a central location.
I have one device with WiFi 6 so when I'm in the same room about 1.1Gbps.
Roughly all my devices use AC, so around 500-600.
Wired 800-900.
I have a script on my Asus that does hourly speedtests tops out about 900.
I run Merlin firmware.
Waiting for the Hub 5 to take advantage of the 2.5Gbps port on both ends.
Overall the SH4 in modem mode is fine for me.
Then my other half has M350 and that runs on a AC86U and tops out around 383-400, same custom script and firmware, using a SH3, all in modem mode.
How do i remove the very bottom cord from my old box?
You need that little black tool Virgin media sent with the Hub.
i had a hub 5 fitted a few days ago, I'm supposed to be on 1GB, I'm getting 600mb if I'm lucky, been told by VM to wait for the system to settle down ( that old chestnut again), well if it does not improve it will be going back
Same problem I'm having. They tell you to let the connection settle down for a week or so which would take you close to the cooling off period then make you pay an early termination fee lol. I wish I'd just have stuck with my M500 package as im just receiving the same speed but paying more! Not impressed with the hub5 either.
Honestly sounds like the experience we had when moving to Virgin Media - we went straight for 1Gig but had the Hub 4 and they replaced it several times, the wires from the house to the exchange and 6 engineer visits. We ended up using the Hub 4 in modem mode with a Linksys mesh which has been ok. I have asked Virgin Media to send me a Hub 5 but still waiting. Also agree with the rain comment!
Do you want to get maximum from your 1Gig throught WIFI ? Buy WIFI 6 capable router, and use your Hub 4 as modem. This should help 😉I use and recommend Asus RT-AX86U. Currently use with Vodafone Full Fibre, get nearly 900mbit/sec up and down
Thanks for your input! I'm thinking of joining Vodafone, I'm using Asus zenwifi pro xt12. Do you connect it straight to the ONT box?
@@GrumpyMansREVIEWS Yes I do 😀Ethernet cable from ONT directly to my router WAN port. I have to WAN ports, 1 is 1Gbit/sec capable and another one 2,5Gbit/sec
Thanks!
Haven't found an issue RE: rain but in addition, Virgin did install FTTH for me.
That, and I don't use Virgin for WiFi
I have the shit hub 4 it does not work on modem mode. Virgin replaced 4 times the shit 4 with not avail on modem mode. Asked for a hub 5 I was told to wait until march. I am in a complete total loss as I invested on a orbi 6E mess Wi-Fi
cheers for the help im planning on buying the giga 1 version and swap over from plusnet cus there charing me so much for just 20MB and all my mates said that virgin media is the best
As a virgin media engineer myself, if every gets an issue then it would be a network problem. If only yourself gets the issue then it would be something to do with noise on the line. Virgin media signal is done by db’s so all connections on every box, barrel, splitter, equaliser should be tight and not loose. The signal should be as close to 0 db as possible. You may want to get an engineer to come back out to test all them things.
Got a call from virgin media after trying to desperately disconnect from them due to constant dropouts and intermittent internet and they finally admitted our area is having an snr issues (not sure what that means) and while they are working to fix it, it could take weeks or months to because its likely a damaged wire. Is it the wiring in the ground going from my building to the cabinet or some sort?
Its been 3+ years that we've been having the same problem over and over and all service line could update me with is an area fault that's being fixed (which always gets pushed back). Uhhgh
i use hub 3 , i have 500 mb which they are now going to give me 600mb
, i have 2 netgear orbi RBK50 which i have a cable connecting them
both and wifi is fantastic , only thing i used to get weak signal was ring door bell
but think is more to do with this only use the hub 3 in modem mode ...........
not sure if a need 1gb as 500 is mega fast anyway .............
I was a new VM customer and the engineer gave me the Hub 5. VM is way better than Sky in my opinion, however I bought as S22 in Nov. It was the only device that kept disconnecting. I had a separate router and this had its own wifi, and same issue with that. Samsung did a major update in Jan 2023, and touch-wood its been fine since. On the whole the Hub 5 is very good.
Thank you for sharing your experience!
This is down to the mobile using a randomised MAC Address, changing to “Phone MAC” is the solution.
@@TheNpcNoobyou are correct I do levle 3 ICT. Yes it is to do with the Mac address most likely. But it's more likely to when your s22 switches to 5ghz sometimes it can play up or its struggling to allocate to your phone when packet loss happens it resets the connection. It's on all the hubs because the virgin media's frequency bandwidth midgeation is bad use to happen on my Samsung tablet.
I hub 1gig we get no issue except the Odd router setup.
Allways here if need help
:)
Never had that problem on any phone or PC with random MACs using Virginmedia or other ISPs.
It's your phone!
That is why you use different SSIDs and prefer one. It stops the constant reconnect if a signal happens to change slightly.
Nothing to do with the MAC, that just identifies the device, nothing much else on a home set up for basic users.
All service providers have strengths and weaknesses to be fair. I am just waiting for my Hub 5 after struggling with wifi reception in upstairs rooms. Its actually a wet day today and signal has been really poor today. I also have noticed on rainy days wifi performs worse
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm with BT now FTTP using the BT Hub 2 and today it's a really wet/winde day and the internet is absolutely fine.
Full Fibre is not as it sounds, It’s simply full fibre from the head end (exchange) to your local distribution box (node) then is run in either RG6 VM or Copper 1 Pair OR, now if you had FTTP (fibre to the premises) that is full fibre installation, certainly many new builds are available with this technology if the developer was keen on this topology.
I've got one and it's superb full wifi coverage throughout my property including my car on the drive. I use voip and that is superb too. Alexa is very fast as is my Firestick.
Thank you for sharing your experience!
never had any problem with my samsung phone , me personally the hub5 is a problem keeps on switching off at night time and i have to switch it off/on again the previous hub 3 never had a problem with it
they wanted me to go to hub 4 a few years ago and i said no due to the problems ithad connecting.
i just think the hubs are the main problem as they get over heated
we had volt and it would crash at night
so we went back to the previous package and while on hub 5 it crashed again
still got my hub 3 so i might change it if it keeps occurring.

They were out of stock, now back in stock today! Mine is arriving in few days. Call them up and ask for it if you haven't already.
Had the superhub 5 about 3 weeks and the wifi is awful, drops in and out constantly even with 2 extenders (virgins own) the hub needs reseting every couple of days as the speeds get worse over time. I`m on 1gb and usually its around 400mb but if left for a few days without a reset it will drop down into the 50mb range.
I'm using my own Asus Zenwifi Pro XT12 mesh system now, everything just works fine.
I'm thinking of downgrading back to hub 4 as this hub has serious issues and must not of been tested properly a quick search shows how poorly the WiFi is it disconnects all the time and takes ages to reconnect.

@@richardgoldins4790 Any port will work.
Anyone use it in modem mode and how reliable is it?
Coming into third week, I'm using it in modem mode, so far no issues.
My speeds don’t drop when it rains for me
Im on hub 3 just paid extra £25 and engineer coming with hub 5 also have wifi 6 mesh system lets see 🙈
Good luck! Let us know how you get on.
Thank you
Yeah my Internet is worse when it's raining too, the hub 4 is rubbish had the hub 3 was much better. I should be getting a hub 5 next week hopefully that solves all my issues.
Ever since I upgraded from m350 to 1gb the internet has not been reliable, constant drop outs, i'll probably downgrade next year if the hub 5 is the same as it doesn't look like fibre will come to my area anytime soon
That's exactly what happened with us M350 was okay upgrade to Gig 1 and had a full new install in.
My internet is also trash when it rains...
equalizers are supposed to be fitted in the omni box, not at the CPE. Doesn't really matter but it's not standard practice. Also that agent wasted an engineer visit but they are total idiots so i'm not surprised.
You're right there is one in the box as well.
Make sure to put you're WiFi signal to 160hz for the 5ghz channel if you have WiFi 6 devices. I only got 600mbps on 80mhz but 1.24gbps on 160mhz
Of course that's the benefit of WiFi 6 however I'm using my own Asus Zenwifi Pro XT12 mesh system everything is working spot on and hopefully this coming week I'll be up and running with BT 900
@@GrumpyMansREVIEWS hopefully there will be a bt 900 review I’m thinking of getting onto that
Prefer the look of the hub 4, looks more modern
Hub 4 was ass but hub 5 is pretty damn impressive. I don't have any issues now with lag or disconnection issues now that I've upgraded my hub 4 to 5.
Thank you for sharing your experience!
It's 1 gig, NOT gig 1, please say it right, it's triggering my OCD so badly!
Brilliant quality
Thank you for watching!
Video on Virgin Pods would be good 👍🏾
Video coming today.
I had a hub 5 delivered a week ago, the wi-fi is crap.
Unless you're in the same room as the router forget about it.
If I do manage to get a weak connection in the next room it drops out straight away.
My brand new samsung 53A phone only connects if I'm in line of sight of the router
I have some older TP link adaptors that weren't recognised so I replaced them with newer versions.
They were recognised but a waste of money as any connection drops out if I leave the room.
The ethernet connection is good but so was my old hub.
Edit. After disabling the 5GHz mode things have very much improved and if they stay like this I'm happy.
Thank you for sharing your experience.
Then you live in a mansion or have ridiculously thick walls or something else in the home is causing severe wireless radio problems and you will have poor wifi penetration no matter what equipment you use. It's working better on 2.4ghz because the penetration is better. The issue is your house, not the hub.
@@RUclipsSupportTeams I live in a regular 3 bed semi, the interior walls are single brick rather than plasterboard.
However the Virgin Media hub I had for 10 years or more previously had no issues with walls and worked fine.
This new hub 5 even on 5ghz should penetrate 10 feet through a wooden ceiling to the room above but can't.
It's supposed to be intelligent that it will select the best channel and band, no evidence of that ever happening.
Like I say everything is hunky dory on 2.4ghz, but I can't say I've gained anything by swapping hubs.
Using Ethernet I get 110 down and 10 up, on wireless it's 60 to 75 down and 10 up, that's fine by me.
Worth saying that by cancelling every 18 months and waiting for them to contact me my monthly bill is £25 for the 100mb/tv/phone package.
@@beltanewalk8797 If you aren't getting 110mbps wireless near the hub then it's the mobile device(s) you are using is either faulty or has a cheap wifi chip. Older devices also won't handle band selection well either. Even a 2022 cheap device like a Ring doorbell (which are utter shite for connectivity) can have a cheap wifi chip to keep costs down and will never perform like an expensive device with a better wifi chip. It makes absolutely no sense that you would be getting poorer speeds on the hub 5 unless of course the hub 5 is faulty which i highly doubt. From experience I'm willing to bet if i ran a speedtest on my own device at your house I would be getting the correct speeds in different rooms like we do at countless service calls with customers claiming 'poor speeds' and we show them the correct speed on an ancient 2017 Samsung Note. The fact of the matter is for years Virgin Media have wasted hundreds of thousands of pounds for too long on calling out to customers where the fault is their own equipment without the customer even cross-checking it first or bothering their lazy asses to research on why they might have the problem they are having because it's too convenient to pick up the phone and both blame VM for "cRaP wIfi" and expect engineers to perform miracles for free and now the company have finally woke up and charge a £25 call out fee for wasted visits or £100 for a hub relocate if the customer doesn't want to put their hand in their pocket and buy their own mesh system when they absolutely need it but don't bother listening to professional advice and again expect the world to fall at their fingertips. BT have always charged £90+ for wasted visits.
@@RUclipsSupportTeams There seems to be some misunderstanding here, the issue was never about speed which I haven't complained about.
Indeed when I took out the service it was I believe 30Mb and Virgin have increased it to 100+ over the years without me asking, good on them.
The issue was everything worked just fine on the old hub, all devices connected and stayed connected. I never checked at what speed because I wasn't concerned.
As I previously wrote I'm happy after disabling the 5ghz which solved the connection problems, although I had to replace some pc dongles, not the end of the world.
So I don't know if I'm getting better or slower speeds than my old hub, nor am I concerned as what ever speed I have now it's more than enough for my needs.
Virgin sent me their all singing hub 5 without a mention that some older devices might not be supported, however I don't expect them to test every device out there.
I have to assume that they knew it could be an issue and perhaps they should have made customers aware, not everybody is tech savvy enough to solve issues.
Fortunately all my devices with onboard wifi including some ancient laptops, tablets and phones all work just fine on 2.4ghz and don't need replacing.
So yes I feel I can say when standing in a doorway10ft from the router with both 2.4 and 5ghz enabled and not connecting the wifi is indeed crap compared to the old hub.
My original post was reporting my own experience with the hub 5, others users mileage may differ.
Yep _ we had Sky and it dropped every time it rained - have since swapped to VM full time on the hub 5 with 2 pods. All great so far….
Ps., took 3 weeks to get the pods connected btw - several calls and emails etc., - eventually they did it remotely and all good ever since that issue
Oh dear I'm thinking of joining Sky in a few months. Did you have fttp or fttc? After 7 years we have other options apart from Virgin media.
