That makes so much sense, and the vision she had that almost looked like she miscarried during the storm Ivar and Ragnar went through could have been a metaphor for rebirth.
I imagine her dream wasn’t meant to be taken literally like she believed. The way I see it, Ivar being suffocated by the sea is probably a metaphor for how this trip with Ragnar would “kill” the helpless and crippled boy she knew him as, but he’d return as a changed and more capable man.
Aslaug always made her best to protect her son, but she was not overprotective actually, since she asked Floki to teach Ivar how to be a real viking, when he was still a very little child. And in that scene she realises that, cripple or not, Ivar is not a child anymore. So she understands that, no matter what she feels, it's time to let her son make his own decisions as a man now.
Zalas.t At that time, life expectancy was short and child mortality was high. Usually, most crippled babies died soon or were abandoned because they were considered unfit for life. So I doubt very much if viking mothers could allow themselves to overprotect disabled children. That's why Aslaug asked Floki's help in order to toughen up Ivar, so he can get strong enough to survive. And obviously, it worked! : )
This scene shows the human side of two of the less popular characters on Vikings and showcases the fact that Alex Hogh is capable of portraying great emotional depth when his character is not screaming at the top of his lungs and killing people. Scandinavian men are traditionally mama's boys even in this day and age and are generally quite proud of it...but even though a boy's best friend will always be his mother there is a time when he has to say goodbye to her.
I don't care what anyone says I think Aslaug was a really good mother. Everything pretty much went down when Harbard showed up. Resulting in Siggy dying and the kids falling through the lake. Also little Siggy dying from neglect. At that point I didn't like her. But she was a good mother to start with and this scene shows me the old her who wouldn't let Ivar die as a baby.
I think totally the same. I think only those people should judge her who know what it is like to be the parent of a disabled child. Of course she paid more attention to Ivar, and that is what seems "neglect" for the others. But that was just her way to try to compensate him for the fact that he gets less chance for a good life and less love from everyone else in the world, while all his brothers can live a good life and are very popular and happy.
Gen Rose Ppl blame her for little Ziggy, but why the Fuck would a Queen be babysitting. The parents couldn't give her 1 of Many slaves to see after the girl😕 Aslaug was Def neglectful, but did anyone notice she saw after her own. Why was She supposed to baby sit Lagertha's grandchildren?!? I Never liked Aslaug, but she was blamed for things Others should have been. Ragnar left Lagertha blame RAGNAR, child dies blame PARENTS, smh.
Ebony Egw1103 I think exactly the same. She did several bad things, but she was blamed for much more things. She was blamed for things someone else should have (also) been blamed. Like Ragnar's cheating and their divorce with Lagertha, and like little Siggy's death.
Gen Rose Ivar had a terrible pain until Harbard showed up. I understan she felt so fascinsted. Nobody else gave a damn about Ivar before, even Ragnar looked upset when he looked at him. Clearly Harbard had some kind of power, many people died while he was in the village
I adore how Aslaug was protective of Ivar. She had her faults like everyone else on this show. All the hate is from the stans fan who refuse to see their own beloved characters have faults too.
Specially those who are massive fans of Lagertha, though she was the one who chose to leave herself and define her own path. I like Aslaug more though.
I dont care what anyone says but aslaug was a good mother and person. A woman who basically raised herself because her mother died and her father was always away. She was desperate for Ragnar to love her, she wanted him to love her so bad as much as he loved lagarthra. She raised four of his sons basically alone while he was always away, one who has terrible disabilities. She helped make Kattegat a thriving trading post also. And she was terrified that something would happen to her sons because she knew that no matter what Ragnar would blame her. Like in season two when jarl Borg invaded the town, she wasn't complaining about the house they went to being dirty because she didn't like dirty she was complaining because she was afraid the boys would catch something and they would die and Ragnar would be mad at her. All her sons wanted to be like their father and then when ivar was born she knew he wouldn't and couldn't be exactly like his father. ivar would never be able to fight like his father or brothers. Aslaug made sure he was smart like her and had floki teach hime what being a true viking was about.
