Correction: In the Cold Fear segment, I meant to say 'Coast Guard' instead of 'Navy Seal.' Apologies for any confusion.
Would you guys say that Call of Cthulhu is a hard game?
The 2000s was the golden age for psychological horror games
The Suffering on the original Xbox was really eerie
The Suffering was awesome! Mind bending at times!
Playing on xbox was suffering
I second this! Amazing game!! One of my favorite horror games of all time (Prision is hell, not Tied that bind)
More like the buffering on xbox was suffering
@@killolot you’re him…
Silent hill 2 makes me extremely emotional towards the end every time. No shame. Such a good game, incredible writing and soundtrack.
You forgot the most terrifying xbox game of them all, drake of the 99 dragons. 😂 in all seriousness, good job at the choices! Can't wait for part II
Haha I definitely need to make a list of scary bad games!
I completely forgot abiut that game 😂
Whatttttt?!? Obscure is absolutely a must-play! It's so much fun, and even better to play with a friend. I heard the PC ports are great too. Cold fear is also on my list. I have yet to play it though :(
Can confirm the PC ports are great and supports 2nd player from the get-go
I absolutely love Obscure! It's one of my favorite survival horror titles, and the couch co-op aspect of it is so unique amongst titles from this generation. I love the way you can have the characters do things you always want to do in other games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill but weren't allowed to: these kids will smash open a vending machine to loot some energy drinks, break the window and reach a hand through to unlock a door, double-team the monsters, pick their way into lockers, boost one another up to interact with stuff otherwise out of reach...it was so refreshing! Excellent work on this video too. Great job! :)
I just realized I have it in my collection, and now I can't wait to give it a try!
The suffering 1&2 also have really good horror atmospheres, even though the games are more action oriented. You can still stop and soak in the spookiness
Cold Fear is one that always looked intriguing (especially being the same team that did Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare). I’ll need to pick that one up next time I come across it. I’m ashamed to say I never played more than the first 10 minutes of Silent Hill 2…but I also have the HD Collection on PS3 that I heard was messy. Great topic as always man! Been trying to catch up on your videos, and binging them (to only comment back-to-back now that I have a chance lol).
Thank you for the comments haha I appreciate the support.
It’s worth noting it’s on Steam for like $10
Also Silent Hill 2 is considered abandonware now so it’s pretty easy to get on PC and there is also a fantastic fan project making it HD
It's also on PC. Like said above, though I bought mine for 5EUR when it wa son sale.
I have recently purchased the original XBOX (being a life long PS fan) and I absolutely love it.And I have also decided to check the games on RUclips and stumbled upon your channel and I really like it so keep up the good work :) My only wish was to see a list of original XBOX horror games and you just made it so thanks for that, you read my mind there :)
Welcome aboard! I'm delighted to hear that you're enjoying the content and the original Xbox. There are so many fantastic games on the console!
Thanks man :) Yeah I agree and I also love the original Duke controller,I don't get it why people used to talk trash about it@@campxbox
Yeah the Duke is bulky, but I think its a unique and solidly designed controller.
Ouch, you hit me in the childhood. My Xbox was a hand-me-down from my older half brothers when they got a new console so I was a few years late to the party back then but I recall the awesome video games (which to 6 year old me was like a treasure trove) as well as the not-asked-for rap music they left downloaded onto it 🤣
Great picks!
I personally love "Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly Director’s Cut", and have always wanted to try "Silent Hill 4: The Room" and "The Thing" on the Original Xbox.
All of those are great choices. I have never played Fatal Frame 2, but after beating the first one, I'm super excited to hop into it.
Sh4 is so good on the original xbox. there's a part where everything is upside down and backwards, and the only way to get through the room is to play the game upside down on the couch. genius.
I don't care for horror games, but I remember playing Fatal Frame and absolutely loving it. I have no idea why I bought it, but damn it was a good game.
We got pretty far in it too, only giving up when we hit a ghost that kept phasing through walls and made it impossible to kill.
Great content as always.
It's funny how sometimes we end up trying something outside our usual preferences and end up loving it. Thanks for the kind words about the content. I appreciate your support!
Cold Fear's depiction of stormy sea was mind blowing at the time. And as you say, it looks and plays really well.
At first it makes you feel sick till you get used to it 😂
I am not a horror genre guy myself, but I watched a let's play of Silent Hill 2 years ago and, wow, one of the greats.
Yes, the best, and Fatal Frame series from 1 to 3 is great too.
the graphical fidelity of these games really shows what the original xbox was really capable of
even with 64mb of ram they really have some impressive visuals!
The Xbox ports are graphically inferior for the most part, especially Silent Hill 2. PS2 has complex fog whereas Xbox has significantly downgraded fog. Same for Metal Gear Solid 2, Scarface: The World is Yours, The Matrix: Path of Neo, Area 51 and countless others...
@@VergilHiltsLTMost of the games that came out multiplatform between ps2 and Xbox are better on xbox, mercenaries for example is much better on Xbox, timespliters 3, cod 3, cod 2 big Red one, Black, fatal frame 2, nfs most wanted, nfs carbon, mortal kombat armageddon(which runs at 720p on xbox) fifa street 2 etc
@@TheFred128 Black does NOT look better on Xbox, same on both platforms so this is false.
NFS Most Wanted and Carbon have better lighting and performance on PS2, Fatal Frame 2 looks the same, also The Matrix: Path of Neo looks godawful on Xbox, same with Silent Hill 2 which has severely downgraded fog, Scarface: The World is Yours doesn't have blood decals and missing suit shading on Xbox + inferior lighting effects and worse textures across the board.
Metal Gear Solid 2 has downgraded rain particle effects and still drops below 40 FPS during Tanker level while PS2 maintains stable 60, and Xbox doesn't even have Resident Evil 4, Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill 3 and Metal Gear Solid 3, which outright murders anything on Xbox.
Prince of Persia trilogy was developed for PS2 first then ported to Xbox and PC, resulting in missing bloom/lighting effects, worse textures and audio issues, Beyond Good & Evil uses the same engine which was developed for the PS2 first as well, confirmed by Michel Ancel himself. That game is also superior on PS2.
Only like 10 games support 720p on Xbox and result in huge framerate drops, besides the graphical downgrades from PS2 in order to achieve that resolution. That really doesn't help. Source: I've played all these games on both original hardware and emulators PCSX2 and XEMU with a resolution increase up to 1440p, which makes the Xbox flaws even more apparent.
@@VergilHiltsLT After you said that most wanted and carbon have better lighting effects and better frame rate on PS2... I realize you didn't have both consoles 😂. Playing on emulators doesn't count, it has to be on the original hardware to compare. The frame rate in most wanted and carbon is much more stable on Xbox, the textures are better, the lighting effect is better and shows realistic cracks in the asphalt, etc.
@@TheFred128 Likewise, you're clearly a backwards scrub who doesn't know how to set up an emulator, but that's to be expected in comments section of "CAMP XBOX". Emulators have 99% accurate rendering with PCSX2 Nightly builds and XEMU, and I clearly mentioned comparing them on OG hardware as well which proves you have severe reading issues. Anyway, Metal Gear Solid 3 tramples any Xbox game period, and Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 3, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War 1-2, Devil May Cry 1 & 3, Final Fantasy X and XII don't even exist on Xbox.
This era had some awesome horror
Totally agree!
Curse: The Eye of Isis is another horror game that gets overlooked on the OG Xbox
Fatal Frame was my main game. I played it so many times. I was in college and I remember one semester the entire time I would play this game nonstop. It's very fun.
Fatal Frame 2, The Thing, Constantine, The Suffering games, Curse: The Eye of Isis and Doom 3 are also good horror games. And good action horror games are Run Like Hell, Buff the Vampire Slayer games, Bloodrayne games, Hunter the Redeemer, Evil Dead games and Dino Crisis 3 (maybe)❤
Oh yeah all great picks! I plan on making a sequel list eventually and a lot of these will make the cut. I will say last time I played Dino Crisis 3 it was pretty rough though lol!
Dino crisis 3 is scary because it's so god awful
@grimmatchstick7467 Ya but Jet packs and dimensional time traveling space dinosaurs 😳
I played them all on release. 'Project Zero' (Fatal Frame) and 'Silent Hill 2' are masterpieces, 'Cold Fear' was surprisingly good but was quickly overshadowed by Resident Evil 4. Call Of Cthulhu was a bit laborious and forgettable because of it and I didn't even bother finishing 'Obscure' it was that boring.
You forgot to mention that the Xbox version of SH2 had extra content in the form of a new chapter (starring Maria alone) called "Born from A Wish".
Obscure was amazing! one of the best survival horror games from the PS2, what are you talking about lmao only the 2nd one was a bit boring for me due to its linearity and dumbed-down combat system compared to the first one
Fun Fact: Cold Fear actually started out development as a Time Crisis spinoff called Time Crisis Adventure but Namco rejected it.
Man fatal frame and silent hill is love for horror game lovers
What a good video about this very interesting age of xbox games. Your presentation is awesome, easy sub.
Thanks for the sub! Glad you enjoyed!
Great video! Love the Silent Hill series (even though I had to play 2 and 3 on the HD Collection). I’ll definitely check out Cold Fear and Fatal Frame. Would love to see more of these horror videos!
Yeah definitely going to work on some more horror gaming lists!
Cold Fear plays great on Steam Deck
Code Red Mt. Dew, Guacamole Doritos, Monster Energy, Fritos...SpikeTV in 2004, Octane XM Radio, mid to late 2000's reality television shows...the TV Guide channel, Toonami, Y2K ESPN...
I enjoy your channel. Well done.
Great video, you earned a subscriber, keep up the great work!
Welcome aboard! Glad you enjoyed!
great presentation, love that you used authentic footage from the og xbox .
Thank you! Yeah I like to play and record everything off the console.
Awww what a great channel i just found! Subbed!!!
Thank you for the sub! Welcome aboard!
Cool video buddy, even with the issues I loved the Silent Hill collection on 360. I subbed, been an xbox fan for a long time, loved playing online on the original console in it's hay day.
Thanks for the sub! At least with the Silent Hill collection it made those games much easier to get a hold of and play.
I still remember extremely vividly Christmas Eve of 2001 going to the mall and a electronics boutique (eb games pre 2002) and getting my cousin silent hill 2 for Xbox that's all he asked me for , also I picked up army men air tactics for game boy color for like 9.99 discounted , cant believe how long ago that was
I completed Silent Hill 2 recently on the PS3, such a good game! I will play it on the Xbox one day. Still Life is also a very good game I must mention.
Still Life is a really good one, I actually talked about that one in depth on the channel but it definitely needs to be in one of these videos
@@campxboxI agree man and yeah I had a feeling you probably talked about it on one of your other videos.
Cold Fear was a straight underrated gem. I'd given it a 10/10 if it had a map.
When I was a wee lad with an Xbox the horror games that kept me up were doom 3, the suffering ties that bind and manhunt. I had others but I've never let those 3 go
I'm so glad I found your channel. I've always been a ps/nintendo/sega snob. Only recently have i come to understand what Xbox had to offer. I've got my old ver.1 right here next to me and i plan to redeem myself with your help!
Fatal Frame or Project Zero how it is called here in Europe, is my Favorite Horror Franchise :) I'm happy that we got Project Zero 4 and 5 on the Series. Hopefully we get 1-3 Remaster or a Remake of those too ^^
Yeah I totally agree I would love to see a remastered trilogy.
@@campxbox I played the Wii Version of Part 2 and this looked really great! Much better that the Original. So we will see :)
Project Zero 3 is the best in series
@@mandibiedermann2246 agree but this has hints to the previous ones so a collection with all 3 would be great :)
Ayye I remember Dark Corners of the Earth and Fatal frame 2 CB for Xbox. Being one of the most scariest games I've played IMO. I literally used to get shivers playing Fatal Frame when I was a kid
Does anybody else remember the game known as “curse: the eye of Isis” or something? It was a silent Hill type knock off on the original Xbox is what it seems like. Also, I had no idea obscure was on the original Xbox. I thought obscure the aftermath was a good game as well but I believe it was just on PS2.
Yeah Curse is a good one, but is pretty expensive on the og xbox. The sequel to Obscure is on PS2, PSP, PC, and Wii but never made its way to the Xbox.
the xbox cover art for fatal frame gave me war flashbacks 😭
Haha it is pretty ugly. the Japanese Xbox cover art is much better.
Silent Hill 4: The Room was terrifying
Cold Fear was the Resident Evil for the Xbox, since we really never had any
Call of Cthulhu dark corners of the earth. Is SOMETHING!! Dare I say the best Lovecraft atmosphere Game out there!!
Cold Fear was one of the 720p OG XBOX games. If they made it backwards compatible, it would scale up nicely. Still sitting on my shelf.
That SH2 Xbox boxart slaps hard. It looks too good on that green label on top.
Glad I stumbled upon you! Subscribed
Thanks for subbing!
@@campxbox love OG Xbox it gets slept on so nice to see you're keeping it relevant!
Call of Cthulhu was so goddamn good.
Must play horrors are Doom 3 The Suffering 1&2 and RLH Run Like Hell
damn i played call of cuthulu when i was about 9 and i still remember that little girls mum being locked in the attic but it was some sort of creature
Silent hill 4 the room a Jewel I really enjoyed in Xbox classic
I grew up with all these games.
Me who only owns the Xbox 360 version. Maybe it's because I haven't played the original version but it doesn't seem that bad. It's still scaring the pants off me and still beautifully atmospheric.
I remember Fatal Frame 1 Xbox having additional content on top of the PS2 one. More opportunities to sh*t buckets.
Not a horror game but the Ravenholm level in Halflife 2 was great. I remember when I bought the port on original xbox and got to that level. Pretty scary.
Oh yeah totally agree! Its the level I think of when I think of Half Life 2.
Great video! Obscure in particular is one of my favourite games of all time. Sure it’s got some jank to it, but that’s part of the PS2/Xbox era charm and it also mimics the campiness of the late 90s-mid 00s teen horror films it’s inspired by quite well. The sequel was great, too but (spoilers) it ends on a semi-cliffhanger that’s never followed up on because Hydravision went bankrupt, restarted as Mighty Rocket, seemingly liquidated again after starting work on a follow up that never came out, that plus the sequel isn’t on Xbox which is my preferred way to play any 6th gen game. The PSP version is surprisingly great considering O2 was a decent looking PS2 game and it received very few cutbacks on PSP, also the only offical way to play it in widescreen with normal controls since the PS2 and PC versions are locked to 4:3 and the Wii version only has Wii remote support (with added waggle, ooh boy). Also on the note of Fatal Frame, if you’re in Europe and Australia/NZ and can’t seem the find them, the games are called Project Zero over here. The games are just called Zero in Japan so it’s a more faithful name, but most westerners know them as Fatal Frame. Rant aside I throughly enjoyed this video. This era of horror games is where the peaked really, post OG Xbox/GCN/PS2 they became more “how much gore can we fit into the game and get an M” and less genuinely thrilling
Glad you enjoyed the video and I appreciated reading through your opinions. Totally agree that this gen of horror titles were really something special.
when i was very young i tried a demo of a game on the xbox. I dont fully remember it i think it was a rpg action game or something, but basically theres this spider boss and to start the battle you have to look at the ceiling of the cave and thats when you see it and the fight starts. I wish i knew what game it was but dang it creeped me out.
I would say prey 2006 is game that should be on horror game list for Xbox 360
Silent Hill 2 on Xbox is a special release, hence the "Restless Dreams" moniker. It includes a console exclusive mini chapter that focuses on a very important character called María.
This was added to the PS2 version with the Greatest Hits release.
I love your style of content did you gain inspiration from TotallypointlessTV? keep up the good work
No I don’t think Ive watched that channel. Ill check them out though. Id say my biggest inspirations are Sega Lord X and Jeremy Parrish but I feel like Im trying my best to bring my own style to retro gaming youtube. Thank you for the kind words!
@@campxboxyour own style is working
Great love the name will look for it
Great video
Thanks!
What about Doom 3? I’d like to hear you talk about that game. I liked this video a lot, first one I’ve seen of yours.
Yeah Id love to cover Doom 3 at some point. Its an excellent one!
If you do a second horror video, you definitely need to add Curse: the Eye of Isis!
I freakin' LOVED cold fear:)
It got done dirty by being accused of being a RE4 ripoff even though they came out so close to each other. The ship swaying made for an interesting mechanic.
And then there was kid me who thought King Kong and haunted mansion to be some scary games 😅
I have an OG Xbox. People are charging 50-150 bucks for call of Cthulhu. Unreal… please stop being this way people.
the first horror title when i bought my og xbox was curse eye of isis and the more on rails house of the dead 3. loved call of cthulhu. that fisherman chase was a bitch. all of which weren't on gc or ps2. subbed 😊
Idk why but I never knew until I saw the thumbnail of this video that sh2 was even on Xbox.
Every game you mentioned here is a damn masterpiece. Though I love Silent Hill 3 even more than 2, I may be minority with my opinion :D
I think I like 2 better, but I totally agree 3 is a masterpiece as well!
Call of Cthulhu is a real underated horror Game. Not perfect anf buggy on PC, but I enjoyed it🙂
Totally agree! More people should check it out!
@@campxbox As a Lovecraftian Game is a pretty underated one to me🤔
i am a horror fan and i don't get scared that easily bu then i tried Fatal Frame on PS2 for 10 minutes , i almost shat my pants and i never touched it again lol , i should probably play it properly soon
While everyone had ps2 I jumped from os1 to xbox, mainly for Halo, but all tge multiplatform games looked better on xbox.
great system with alot gems
Yep, need Cold Fear in my collection now!
Yeah Cold Fear is crazy hidden gem!
It always confused me as to why Silent Hill 3 never released on the Xbox yet 4 did.
Yeah thats something I need to look into.
You should do a scaler video if you haven't already
Thank you for joining! The support is much appreciated. I will make sure to review Scaler soon. I have a couple more videos already in the pipeline, but you should see it within the next few weeks.
@@campxbox awesome
good reviews!!! games use to be gems
At this point...the Xbox 360 version is the only way most people will get to play silent hill 2 with game prices shooting through the roof.
Condemned freaked me out when I was 11 when it came out 😅
That game is still pretty damn scary.
@@campxbox haha yes how enemies run away in the dark and grab weapons Jesus and the story was dark as fuck
There is this one game that i been trying to find, but i dont remember the name. It was a scary game and you started i think inside a theater or so and there are these weird monsters that have blades as there feets and hands. Its a original xbox scary game
Im trying to find an old game of a guy who is in a hotel room and he’s trying to escape and there’s like monsters in the sewer
I liked Cold Fear.
I didn’t know SH2 was also on the Xbox. Thought it was a PS exclusive.
Yeah it’s surprising honestly. 2 and 4 made it onto the Xbox.
Cool
Cold Fear is really good title. For some reason I've always found RE4 to be a really bad game and eventhough CF is really similar title I find it just simply vastly superior title. Only the the very end of it bit lackluster, but other wise it tells the story and flows insanely well. One of the most underappreciated titles I know since my gaming from early 90's. It has really unnerving feel, like when you get through the deck to one small inside place you can see character for second when thunder flashes. You get ready to attack it outside, but you won't find it anymore and it doesn't happen every time you play the game. Dark Corners of the Earth is also title I'd really like to try again. It also had the right feel in it for quite brief I played it. Shame that it's apparently very buggy title.
Scoping my subs and reaching this vid i had to post SH2 first ever game i bought alone.
I'd seen the Xplay review and later paid extra for quicker shipment.
My say wasn't my cup of tea - the prison creeped me out tho.
Restless Dreams i unknowingly delayed finishing by going to to other places and not realizing i was just a step away from end till i finished.
At least I owned a legend AND it, more SH3 influenced a story i plan to pen.
Omg dark watch!!!
Halo could be considered a horror game Halo CE and Halo 2 scared the crap out of me as a kid specifically the flood
I found fatal frame 2 xbox version in a skip lol..perfect condition
Playing FF on nightmare is already punishing but holy moly the fatal difficulty takes the cake, literally every shit can almost 1 shot you and when you are in the deeper part of the mansion goodluck. The jankiness doesn't help at all but still i love the game but it has issues.
It's raining again 🙂
You forgot to put The Suffering on this list...
It was five random picks for this one, but check out part 2 where I talk about that one!
You neglected to mention that Obscure features two player co-op which is really unique for the genre.
Oh yeah that's a great feature of Obscure. Its definitely a unique aspect.
Can’t forget about the suffering
Yeah I want to make another horror list eventually and that is one I'd like to highlight.
isnt fatal flame the same as Project Zero on the ps2?
Yeah its just called Fatal Frame in North America.
Okay, just wanted to be sure. I played it a lot when i was young. its a really great game.
Good video btw. I watched some of your videos and you earned a new sub :)
Thanks for the sub! I'm glad you enjoyed!
0:28 what does "handpicked these randomly" mean?
Doom 3 on the original Xbox had some pretty intensely terrifying atmosphere that made you not want to move forward.
The thing...
what about Curse: The Eye of Isis?
Yeah, that's a good choice. I only wanted to highlight five for this video, but I want to return to more horror games on the Xbox sometime soon.
DOOM 3
I feel horrible for being the 666th like on this video 😳
