- This is my cheap 4HP, 4 stroke, jet pump outboard motor after 3 months of use.
It is covered in corrosion, but still works pretty well.
I am in a salt water tidal river connected to the Thames estuary.
I average 3 knots with it.
I like using it, but I'm not sure it's even going to last a year.

I haven't found a motor that will wire brush and paint itself. If youse need speed, try TK144FC. It's a very similar motor, but with a lower gear oiler plug and an aluminum propeller that you can file a nice hand finish on. You can't have it both ways. Either a mud motor that you can bounce of coral, or a real propeller that can pull a big boat behind you. I'd sponge everything off and keep it in a dry locker with no fuel, when I'm home or underway.
Would work as a emergency pump with a bit of flat hose and clamp
That's a great idea. If my electric bilge pumps ever fail, and I'm sinking fast, then I can pump out using this. It's light enough to carry around with one arm. But us soon as it sucks it pulls hard, so you would need to tie it back.
Use some anti-corrosion spray as the guy in Florida uses on similar motor , no corrosion after 3 months on his motor !!
Was curious how this little motor was doing. Looking for a jet drive for a 10' john boat that can go about 2hr continuous run time in a shallow rocky river. After 3 months, would you recommend this motor??
I've run it for an hour straight a few times. You will need to top up fuel before 2 hours though. I also don't run at full throttle. It is slow so if your river is fast you will go backwards. I find it generally twice as fast as rowing and much more noisy.
Great to know! This river has a lot of current and we will have about 500lbs in the boat@@sbcode
The most I've gone is ~750lbs. That's 2 people, the boat itself and filled water containers. Always take oars with you just in case.
Is that full throttle ?
pretty close. full throttle doesnt feel very optimal.
