- Hangkai four-stroke air-cooled 4hp motor. Not a long time review since I had it for only 3 months but I think if it hasn't broken down after this time it probably won't after 6 months or a year either. Watch this video if you plan to buy one of these chinese manufactured outboard motors.
I think its a great little 4-stroke motor at the price I paid only $250!

I’ve got one myself and it’s also been great. 👍🏻
Its a cute little motor that will give you less problems and drive you home slowly but safely. Totally worth it
great vid thanks for the info and gps info
Ive got one. Handy lightweight little motors! I upgraded spark plugs then re-plumbed/modified my exhaust to go underwater which not only protects it from rainwater being exposed and wide open how it came from the factory but more importantly.....it's now as quiet as a mouse pissing on cotton!😂
👍
Hi, how did you modify the exhaust / what with?
Quieter sounds a better idea. Thanks
@@richcurtis813 I removed the "muffler" (which is nothing but a hollow container basically) and I cut the threaded end from a 1/2" pipe nipple roughly 1" long....welded it over the existing exhaust pipe using a wire welder....then screwed on a 90° ell, a 1/2"x5-ish" pipe nipple, a 1/2"x3/4" bushing, and then added a 24" copper flex connector made for water heaters. I aimed my 90° ell and nipple at an angle barely missing my spark plug then bent/plumbed my copper to where it's tucked up tight running down the back side of my shaft. I can still turn roughly 190ish degrees which is fine seeing as I never use "reverse" mode with this engine anyway.
@@moneyshot7775um, seems easy to do…. Yeah…
@@moneyshot7775 dude, you need a video showing this!!
I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this one. It's sole purpose will be as a back up motor on my 20 foot center console. I really don't like trolling motors I tend to drift or anchor while fishing but if I have mechanical issues I'd still like a backup motor that I can limp back to the dock with if I needed to. I'd rather invest 250 on this then drift into the rocks without power or control. That or pay for a tow in . This is small enough and light enough that I can mount it on the bow where the trolling motor was . And then I don't have to worry about maintenance or replacing two batteries and honestly probably end up saving some weight. 2 marine deep cycle batteries and my Minnkota trolling motor all together vs that little outboard I'm more than sure will be a weight savings 😂. Thanks for testing it out for people like me . I think it will do exactly what I need it for.
Good luck, mine still works perfectly after 2 seasons 👍
I have one of these outboards as well. I’ve used it 5 or 6 times without issue. It was sputtering the first ride, had to enriched the fuel mix and I put in an Ngk plug, seemed to solve that. It hauls 2 people and a 17’ aluminum canoe no problem. Definitely not a 3.6hp though as advertised, seems more like 2.5 to me.
What fuel mix
@@turbod15 air/fuel “ratio”
@@turbod15 It's a 4 stroke it has oil in the crankcase so you dont' mix oil in the fuel.
yes, you do not need to mix, this is because you have that problems
@@germanborgesxrt I meant I had to adjust the air/fuel screw to solve the sputtering.
Do not mix oil into the gas!
My motor is still going strong, used it the other day.
You routed the throttle cable in front of the motor. It's actually supposed to be routed behind. I did the same as you and found that it got in the way when I was turning. So if you take the tiller arm off, you can just route the cable in the crease behind the engine and it works out a bit better there (unless you aren't annoyed by the cable slack when you turn).
I havent routed the cable, it come like this from the shop.
How to drain the engine oil?
(I can help to translate) The label shown at 1:56 says that "Use high-quality oil. During the run-in period, change the oil every 8~10 hours. After that, you can change the oil every 20 hours."
👍
I got one of these motors too and I'm taking it out for the first time on my Saturn 13' inflatable boat. I can't believe that it's only 2hp instead of the 4 as they advertised. Will let you know how it goes.
👍
You mean you got ripped off ? False advertising to get your money? I would send it right back and does it say what size it is on motor.
@@gosttunter LOL... its a $250 motor, so no nobody got ripped off, false advertising yes but you get what you pay for (a 2hp china clone of a honda engine.... they run well enough)
@gosttunter it tells you the # of CCs in the description, all you have to do it google the hp output. Alot of folks don't read the details before buying them.
If it makes a boat that size go that fast, I should be able to fly in a native kayak then.
Hmmm, I wonder why they pointed the exhaust upwards where rain can get in. I guess you can always replace the washers with stainless ones. I would buy a spare propeller just in case. All in all, not bad for the price. Be safe.
Really bad enginering ? But for the price you cant expect much 😁 Yes I will get a spare propeller in aluminium 👍
@@GurrasGarage where can you get a propeller that will fit? I am thinking of buying this motor. where should I buy the motor?
@@dgthrg Have you tried to google it? for example Hangkai four-stroke air-cooled 4hp motor. You are welcome.
Yes. But you can choose CUKUSIN too.
May i ask why are there 2 tubes coming from the fuel reservoir?
It’s got a “pumper” diaphragm carb- one is a return line.
Random idea or question... do you think the exhaust from the harbor freight ghost engine would fit this engine?
I have no idea 🤷♂️
That's great 5 mph against the current
Actually its 5 knots so 5.75 mph
Hi Gurra, thanks for sharing. Can this motor function properly in heavy rain?
It probably can but I haven't tried, normal rain sure no problem. Check out my other videos on this motor, the best way to avoid water into the motor is to fix the exhaust pipe.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing. How many hours?
Around 10 hours now
Hey man great video
Hope all is well with that motor
Im thinking of getting one of these for my 10 FT. Jon boat
My boat weighs about 150 Lbs. with anchors anchor mates seats
And gear i weigh 143 lbs
Do you think this out board would be sufficient to haul my boat upriver
Absolutely, no problem
@@GurrasGarage ok then ill be ordering on within the month
If you have the time i hope that you could check out my channel ive got d.i.y. videos projects restorations and many more things planned
So I finally dove in and bought one. And i've been testing it in my lake. After about 30 mins of running it starts to sputter and skip and almost sounds like it is misfiring. Ive been playing with the carburetor air and fuel screws. I also replaced the factory spark with a nicer brand. So any advice? Is this just the motor getting hot and saying hey... 30 mins man time for a break because im air cooled? Have you ever encountered this??? Any advice helps. Love your videos!!!
In the beginning when it wasn't broken in I had it misfiring a little at full throttle but never after my new NGK spark plug. Is your motor broken in? if not dont use full throttle. I didnt use full throttle until after 3 hours, except for some short bursts. Or if its really hot where you are I think since its air-cooled and not fast enough to cool it maybe thats the cause?
Take apart your carb. Sometimes there is debris and small pieces of junk. Clean the bowl and carb nicely. Make sure all the gaskets and O Rings seal well and are in good shape. Next, spark plug as he mentioned, gap appropriately. As well to make sure you're not over filling the engine with to much oil. Also check the gap on the coil to flywheel. To large of a gap will reduce the spark the engine can produce.
You can also take a rough wire wheel and scratch up and put small grooves in the cooling fins around the cylinder and head. This will help with cooling. I've done this trick with a few briggs I built up.
Do yourself a favor and get a water cooled motor it has better longevity
Use Vtwin engine oil only & run a ngk spark plug
Does it come with a serial number or id number so i can register it with the state of texas here?
No numbers
Hi this outboard need Marine 4t oil or can use normal 4t oil ?
Use normal 4t 5W-30 synthetic oil. 240ml
Just got this motor today. What NGK plug will work on this motor? Also, have you had any gear oil leak out? I noticed there isn't a gasket when I removed the gearbox cover to add oil.
NGK CR5HSB. There should be a rubber o-ring in the gearbox cover.
@@GurrasGarage Thanks for the info. I guess I didn't see the O-ring. Leaving it overnight it didn't leak, so I guess it's ok. Changing the sparkplugs on my 12hp Hangkai to NGK improved performance, so I'll definitely do it on the 4hp.
How much oil do you put in? 240ML?... Manual is fuzzy, vague... Or the 2 markings on the bottom of the dipstick?
Yes between the markings, do not overfill! The motor is a Honda GXV50 clone, google it and download the manual for free.
@@GurrasGarage Cool thanks.. Hard to get a good reading.. lol and if it is the bottom markings.... seems like it's not enough oil for some reason lol.... Have you ever filled it to the markings and then drained it to see.. the approximate ML? or is that it.. .240ML. That way, I can just pour the exact/close amount of oil without having to play with the dipstick.
Great video!! Do you think an elbow with a go kart muffler will quiet it down?
Thanks, that could work 👍
Be careful of creating too much backpressure with your 'rube goldberg' modifications.
So you put in gas and oil separate? Where? Thank you!
Watch the playlist on my channel, lots of info there
Very helpful videos! I just got a 3.5 hp and as I am breaking it in in a trash can with water, at idle, it gets smoky. It's not quite level - does this matter, will it harm the new motor?
I assume its a 4-stroke. If it smoke a lot it is probably too much oil in the motor, check oil level.
Interested in getting one of these. My only question is. Does it have a reverse? Great reviews
Cheers 👍 No reverse but you just rotate the motor with the handle, very easy to do.
Mine just arrived - Someone message me in 8 months for feedback =). Thanks for the video!
Update: 02/28/22 - Received the motor, it blew oil out of the exhaust and every crevice imaginable. Ran terribly.. I added premium fuel, oil and prop oil. Had to pump it out before shipping. Amazon seller is being an ass, I do not recommend this engine.
@@crestlinerflyingcrest8694 i have same engine on a motorized bicycle, runs great and very reliable. Sounds like you put too much oil in it.
@@crestlinerflyingcrest8694 how’s it doing?
Do you run it in fresh or salt?
Fresh
You should rust spray your nuts and bolts so they don't rust fully 🤟
So you like the motor still? I am looking at the 6.5hp four stroke.
I love it, and I might also upgrade to a 6,5 4-stroke next year
Full gasoline 4 people, silent water, how long can it ride?
I have no idea 🤷
هل تضيف زيت مع البنزيم
its four-stroke
Loud too
Thats what I said 🤣
Where can i procure or sold or buy? I like it.
Amazon
get hose from auto part 8ft n plug into exhaust port run into water or zip tie it im sure it be quite once u done that
Might worth a try I guess
@@GurrasGarage auto hose dont melt i have try them on other stuff n vehicles have them for egr valve sensor
@@kittyztigerz Ok tested it but its not good. Motor will bog down and loose performance when you are blocking the exhaust, possible damage the motor also.
@@GurrasGarage sound like two stroke cant push it out of exhaust i see and thank information
it will not damage engine but it will bog it out like it cant build compression
i was looking around at other outboard engine it have small vent attach to big pipe that run down to propeller outflow and that small vent exhaust was make for idles or start engine when it come to full revving it go down out of the propeller outflow exhaust
i will come around make one and show you what it would look like (cant this weeks because of strom is in my nerves too dangerous)

How long does a tank of fuel last
That is impossible to answer, depends on the size of your boat, how much it weigh, if you are alone in the boat, how fast you go etc.
@@GurrasGarage normal fuel review is flat out with you on your own just to get an idea.... not really impossible tbf, my apologies for asking just this video is only 1 i can find on this motor so will just have to find out for myself
@@paulwilkinson1738 normally they are calculated to last around 1hour at full throttle. just like motorcycle have a tank to last around 300kms.
@@GurrasGarage That is NOT impossible to answer! A tank of fuel lasts until it is all used. Easy and accurate answer.
good one mate!@@shelbyseelbach9568
How is it now?
Works fine, you can watch my playlist for updates
What state has 95 octane?
Sweden 😉
It's in USA close to 89-91 octane fuel. And nowadays, our 95 RON petrol contains 10% ethanol
@@THe9-3MAnIaC
97 has e5
@@turbod15 Yes, because people are afraid of ethanol because they think that it destroy engines so they have to have something to choose between
هل هو جيد للاستخدام المياة المالحة
Yes
Hey…you are welcome
Some say these hangkai motors are pure crap, but I like taking chances on cheap stuff, just to see for myself. I know there are duds out there, but I haven't landed one yet. I need this motor like I need a hole in my head, but thats another matter
Mine works fine, so far so good 👌
Top speed 5 knots ?
With my boat yes
@@GurrasGarage what kind of boat ? Weight. ?
4 meter, 95kg
Can a little motor go in the ocean
Sure, why not
My chonda generator is noisy too. Chorda = Chinese Honda !
😆 Its a feature 👍
Why would anyone change oil every 10 hours. Sure okay, the first time but oil lasts way more than 10 hours. Especially with a little portion of an ounce of lucas oil stabilizer original. That thing will run hundreds of hours. Especially on low throttle.
I think you should because it holds only 240ml of oil and with no oil filter.
Smelling the fumes all the way haha
Thats impressive since you dont even live in the same country as I do 🤣
Good motor but noisy.
Torch spark plug, the very definition of poor quality. Their plugs are rubbish.
