  • Testing top speed on my Hangkai 4hp 4-stroke outboard motor. I adjusted the motor tilt angle, installed new NGK spark plug, new aluminium propeller and a DIY exhaust muffler/pipe.
Is this motor worth buying? Absolutely, but it is not a 4hp motor, it is more like 2hp.
Important! never let the motor lie down filled with oil and gasoline, oil will leak into the cylinder! not a big problem as you can see in the video but still a bit annoying. Same with gasoline, if you fill it up full it will leak out if the motor isn't in upright position.
If you bought this motor do not trust the manual that comes with it, not only is it in poor english its also full of errors. Learn how to properly maintain your China made outboard motor. This motor is a Honda GXV50 clone, get the manual here for free www.manualslib...

Awesome videos. This looks perfect for my 10' inflatable. Yeah no more row row row the boat, at least not on the open river. Save the rowing for the rapids.😂🍻

What? You have no snow! I just got back home from Arizona and woke up to 25 centimetres of snow. It’s really not bad for a budget motor. Be safe my friend.

I have one, mine came with a cracked flywheel key, so the timing was crazy and backfired. If you're backfires check your flywheel and the key slot for a crack. I had to machine it with a band because I couldn't find the part. Works like a champ now though

Its like a lawn mower. You can only leave it on the muffler side. Otherwise oil leaks into the carb. Newer version has aluminium prop & exhaust exits side of muffler not the top.

    Good and informative!
At 02:15 you said it isn't truly 4.0 HP but 2.0 HP motor. Care to elaborate on that? I'm considering getting one of these.

Thanks, this motor is a Honda GXV50 clone that have 2.1hp, the motor is only 50cc so no surprise 😆 but hp doesn't matter the motor is great for the price imo.

I have this motor too and even though it is a good small outboard motor I do not like the noise of that lawnmower engine. I am getting the 6 hp or the 12 hangkai outboard for more speed and less noise. Thanks

Yes it is a bit noisy, good luck with the 6 or 12 👍

Hi, I enjoyed your video. I have the same engine, I can't find the oil drain plug! Are you just supposed to turn the motor upside down to get the old oil out?

How about running exhaust pipe into water? Most outboard motors have that and they are less noisy.

    • @GurrasGarage

Yes it would be very quit since it wouldn't run, it would choke to death

I've discovered a problem with these. The carb they use is undersized for starters. It has a 12 mm bore I think. More importantly I discovered that they don't utilize crank case pressure to actuate the fuel pump. Instead that port is open to the engine side of carb bore itself. It will of course see some pressure pulses, but not nearly enough relative to what it would get from the crank case. Also, seems to me at least, that at WOT the rotovalve will be completely open resulting in even less of a pulse exactly when you need it most. I do not see any practical way of engineering a solution to this. Every single replacement carb that I can find has a port on the engine side that should go to crank pulse. The engine on these Hangkai motors has no port there. Also they use a combination of mounting plates/risers so that, in my opinion, makes it even more difficult. These motors do have a crank vent tube that goes to the breather. I've been rolling around the possibility of somehow tapping into that in order to use a better carb. So far I don't have a solution.

Ok, fine but does any of this matter. It is still a 50cc 4 stroke 2hp motor. You can not expect it to run better or faster than this. I get 5 knots on a boat that weigh 200kg total.

    • @jerworth3118

@@GurrasGarage Of course it matters, especially the latter point. It simply cannot function properly with it's design and it should have been simple to make a better design.

@@GurrasGarage there are some differences. The Honda carb will not work on this motor. In fact I don't think it's possible to get a replacement carb for it. I've scoured the internet searching for one. Even those listed on Amazon and eBay for the motor don't actually work. I can show you pictures of the difference if your want. It also means the integrated fuel pump is weak at best and prone to fuel starvation.

    • @GurrasGarage
      @GurrasGarage  3 месяца назад

@@jerworth3118 Dont bother, not interested. Its a $250 motor that runs perfectly fine, as I showed in several videos. If you want a faster motor go up in hp and price.

People say these are crap engines, so what.. It's like a small lawn mower engine. 2 hp is plenty if it gets you where you're going and bring ya back. Briggs & Stratton used to make an engine like this, and it was some kinda loud ! Some say this engine won't last more than 2 years, but who cares..
