How’s it going? Thanks for doing this review on the inexpensive little outboard!! I was actually impressed!! Not bad for the money. Seems like with a little know how and tinkering you could easily make this yourself with a good weed whacker. Definitely seems like a good way to get around a pond or lake and not have to worry about batteries. I’m sure you can go quite some time on little gas. Thanks for sharing this video! I just happened to come across your channel and like it ! I’m a fisherman from upstate NY. I mostly fresh water fish for trout . Big brown and rainbow trout at the Ashokan resavoir, one of NYC water supply resavoirs. It has an upper and lower basin divided by a set of gates that regulates the flow from one basin to the next. Early spring I’ll usually fish the Hudson River for striped bass. In my profile picture I’m holding one I caught two years ago, 42 lbs 441/2 inches long. Their only in the river for about a month and a half, they come up to spawn along with the herring. We catch the live herring using a hookless rubber minnow with a 4oz jig head and swim it in circles to attract mating herring. They will follow it right into your net. Some people cut them up and chunk fish, but then you could catch catfish or eel’s so I use a whole live herring which almost guarantees when your drag starts singing, you have a striper on the other end. It’s a much different experience reeling in a big striper from shore in a tidal river than from a boat in the river or ocean. I’ve gone on many charters for striper and blues and never caught one nearly as big as I have in the river. Your arm is burning by the time you get them in. But nothing compares to tuna fishing!! That felt like having a small vehicle on the other end of your pole and it took 8 hours to get to where we were fishing, you see nothing but water for hours and at 2am we arrived at a spot I. The middle of nowhere. There was 4 or 5 other boats not far away. It was pouring and the boat would disappear into giant swells, out of about 10-15 guys only me one other and the mate’s were fishing. Everyone else was extremely sick and couldn’t stand let alone fish. I was young at the time and paid a lot of money so I was going to fish every minute possible and I did. It was a great trip until I got off the boat. Then it was my turn to be sick, after standing strong, fishing and partying with the mates. Once I got off the boat I felt like I was rocking for 3 days. It was horrible, I’ve been on many different trips since and never had that happen again. Have you guys ever fished up north anywhere? Ever been to NY? Where are you guys fishing and what do you normally fish for? I look forward to seeing what your channels all about!! Thanks again, take care, stay safe and healthy!!
My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!
I have a 1,5 four stroke, same shaft, 2 blade smaller engine and have used it for 2 years now only in seawater. All shiny bits are rusty but it works sweet on my sailing skiff and uses next to no gas! Make sure you use clean gas, it is a pain to clean carbs!
For the benefit of watchers on the other side of the world, eBay Australia has very similar motors selling around the $550-570AU range. Given the exchange rate of the AUD (three fifths of bugger all) that's pretty much in the same price bracket. I don't think I'll be getting rid of the Mercury 3.3 as my small motor any time soon.
I'm actually looking at their 4-stroke 7HP to put on my 10' jon boat. Like you, I live in Florida as well. (Avon Park) - I'll be using it on the rivers around here, especially come deer hunting season to get a little further into some of my hunting spots.
Just get a second hand merc/yamaha.. about as expensive but work a lot better.. longer.. i got a malta 3.5 for 100 bucks.. like 10 years ago.. still works every year.. (its like 30 years old)... cant see no chinese crap engine going 30 years and onwards.
I bought a little Jon boat 3 years ago and the guy had nearly this exact motor on it. It is the most reliable motor I’ve ever had. Maybe I just got a lucky one but I still use it as a kicker on my walleye boat. The only issue it’s ever had is the pin that connects the propeller gear broke one time.
Good to see you back in the game bud!I was kinda getting worried not seeing any new videos. That boat looks nice how it came out.I bet it will be a nice for duck hunting too!
re: your 2 methods of cooling.... I say your engine is air cooled, and the water cooling is for your impeller pump (it may also send water to the block, but may just be for the lower unit.) The rubber impeller blades will melt if not cooled. I love your channel. I watch all your videos.
Motor is air cooled, and the "leg" aka lower unit is water cooled. They had made motors like that for a long time, sears made several of them over the years with Tecumseh Motors
Not a terrible idea. One could probably get a used but decked out john boat with everything already there for less than even a “cheap” non-pedal-drive kayak.
Same here, I am watching with my daughter telling me how great it is! I got to stop showing her RUclips channels! I’ve already got a half built mini jet boat in my garage. Honestly that one is from me watching too much RUclips.
I fabbed up a B&S 3hp Quantum 4 stroke to a Gnat mid and lower unit with idle and fast speed and choke control. Added extra muffler. Makes a fine add on trolling motor for a 20 plus foot Vee hull. No pee needed!
Good Vid ! I would put a bucket or wash tub over the motor if it rains, you DO NOT want water going in the exhausts (I know you were experimenting), it could mess up your motor, but cool it started first pull right after the 2 storms ! $300 is a lot of money to me so it is cool there are people like you that can take the gamble and show us before we go out and purchase something like this. The prop thing was weird but it worked lol The metal prop probably wont be as fast, looked smaller and less pitch
Don't worry about the plastic propeller, it'll self-clearance itself. When I was 16 and lived in Brandon, Florida I bought a 14' fiberglass flats boat and it had a 7.5 HP Chrysler long shaft sailboat engine on it that ran decently. I would take it out of the Tampa Shrimp Docks (the old Seabreeze Restaurant), Bullfrog Creek, and the TECO station, and my friends and I would just fish all the time. I got the boat and trailer for $1,500 and it was worth every penny. I would put the ears on it and flush it out after every run. I haven't had a boat since because I live near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and although I would love to have a Jonboat for running around the rivers with my boys and wife, it's easier said than done. If that Chongchee (no racism or ethnic BS intended, it's a play on the brand name of the engine) engine ran decently and was reliable it would be just fine for a small 12' jonboat. Don't expect to go fast, but it'll do just fine for a little river boat with light current.
Thanks for your checks. Now I have it! I have sent back a motor with unknown prop blocking. I didn't have it unused. But in the water near the shore the motor got a stroke after nearly 4 hours use in all, engine running but propeller off. This could be the explanation! Later it was moving again but I don't trust the engine or the drive shaft or deflection.
Every one needs some kind of backup engine. Looks good for most small to mid size boats. I lean towards 2 stroke because my main engine is 2 stroke. Just have a gallon or 2 of regular
My fishing partner has a 1954 big twin 25 horse power evinrude. And I swear it's as big as 45 horse engines of today. And we've never clocked it exactly. But totally stock with two men in a 15' John boat it rides right beside 40 horse engines with tha same boat. But today's engine are crazy the power they put out.
So enjoyed this vid.. especially when y'all got on the snapper..i do have dumb question though ? Is that bolt above the prop used for something or was it placed there for mabye a safety while shipping block and is to be removed? Probably not because it probably has a purpose ..just curious
Dayum! Honestly, I think if my 20ft boat motor left me stranded I could hold this in the water by hand rather than paddle my way to safety. But, the shaft looks too short, even for my small aluminum.
Great video. Looks like a good little motor to play around with. Does it have a 12 volt DC output to charge a trolling motor battery or running lights?
soo glad i came across this video. i have been thinking about buying a used 12-14' flat bottom boat and getting a small engine just for river fishing locally. i have batteries just sitting on the shelf to use for trolling motors too.
You don't want to use marine engine oil in an air cooled engine. Air cooled engines run much hotter thus marine oil won't be viscous enough at those higher temps. Better to get normal lawnmower oil.
That may work for my 14 ft John boat for the River here in Tennessee! Thanks for sharing. I think I would have sanded the props down slightly to miss the nut above!
The exhaust needs a 90 just to keep rain out of the engine when your not using it. Hence the smoke when you fired it up. Not dissing. Thanks for putting this video out.
At 2:22 you said "it sucks water through the slits in the lower unit then it pees it out the back" well half right! The slots in the lower unit are the intake but the pee hole is merely an indicator of water pump operation.
Look into a old self propelled garden tiller they can be modified and The cutting tines removed. And then put a trailer hitch on it makes moving boat trailers very easy.
FYI ya'll... that powdery residue on the engine is a sign oxidation is occuring and is how aluminum rusts. Same process happens to iron, copper, etc... 'cept different metals, of course, produce different colored rusts. Will be interesting to see how bad the aluminum block and other metals get on the engine after 6 -12 months "if" left out in the elements and left untreated(?) Great video, btw, here's a couple ideas for future videos...1) Run a noise/decibel check of the engine via a smartphone & dB/Decibel meter App, and 2) Try installing two engines a/k/a twin 2-strokes & let's see how well it works.
Great video thanks. Watching from new Zealand about the fishing, you guys have the hooks on wrong I think. The loop goes through from the front of the hook
Hey dude a boat trailer rope winch would be awesome at your little boat launch. Mount it to a post about a trailer length and a half past the crest of the slope (just to give you some working room) Put a clip on end. Then just crank the boat up and down. You can get a lot of 1100lb (the "double paracord" style stranded/sleeved cord) on one of those spools. Tie/snap the rope to the handle of your dolly and smooooth easy recovery. My god I miss snapper. I've not been to FL in a few years. We always tent camp and fresh snapper breaded and fried in an old wok over cheap firewood (you must have the mosquitoes and sand fleas for ambience) is the best fish youll ever eat. Love the video dude. I wouldnt mind sticking one of these on a beater jon boat just for big ponds.
Nice setup to. You can run duals now one two stroke engine.& one four stroke engine. Side by side.,or you can use one while your letting the other cool back down to.
The first outboards I'm aware of that used air cooled engines but with water cooled exhaust was the old Eska outboards which were sold under many re-branded names, including Wards, Sea King, some Sears, Ted Williams and others. These were basicially a Clinton or Tecumseh air cooled 2 stroke lawn mower engine..... Lauson also made similar setups back in the day
Have a Ted Williams motor 4.5 horsepower from the 50s and its air-cooled but it also uses an impeller to keep underneath the engine cool which prevents vapor lock, and I guess keep the lower unit cool
Here in North Carolina, we break the shrimp in half, only put half the shrimp on the hook and catch fish. They'll smell it and eat it rather it's alive or not. The tail will catch fish just as good as the head. When you hook the tail, that only has the hook in half the shrimp and they are going to eat the furthest end, it would be nice if they swallowed the shrimp whole but it's often not the case. Looks like you're feeding half shrimp to the fish.

They work great til you get a real motor for your boat. Because of his vids I got one for temp use came ready to use. Sold for the same price when I got my 15hp
Just likes weed whacker it trims its own propeller
Technically yes!
May be a low end motor, but I'm sure it beats an oar any day of the week.
😂😂😂😂
Again., thanks for this review. Jumped straight here after the 2sk clip.. seriously thinking of getting one of these for my 7 foot inflatable which gets very little use as a sail boat tender.
Thanks for this clip and your insights.... And, thanks for the recipes!
Hey if it gets you out on the water then forget the haters and enjoy it
My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized).
I have always heard that the cavitation plate of the lower unit should be in the same plane as the bottom of the boat. For best performance.
I've never eaten walleye. They're not in coastal MS area. How would you compare it to largemouth in taste?
@@mctransportation9831 eat crappie, panfish, and cats. Why you eating largies
This is perfect for my budget bass boat build
Good to see you back in the game bud!I was kinda getting worried not seeing any new videos. That boat looks nice how it came out.I bet it will be a nice for duck hunting too!
re: your 2 methods of cooling.... I say your engine is air cooled, and the water cooling is for your impeller pump (it may also send water to the block, but may just be for the lower unit.) The rubber impeller blades will melt if not cooled.
I love your channel. I watch all your videos.
I bet people are like WHO THE HELL IS OUT THERE CUTTING MY GRASS when you go by! lol 😂
Motor is air cooled, and the "leg" aka lower unit is water cooled. They had made motors like that for a long time, sears made several of them over the years with Tecumseh Motors
now my son is trying to get me to order this, he's looking for a John boat on Craigs list right now!!
Not a terrible idea. One could probably get a used but decked out john boat with everything already there for less than even a “cheap” non-pedal-drive kayak.
Try to get a boat with title if he’s in public waters, game wardens are everywhere.
Same here, I am watching with my daughter telling me how great it is! I got to stop showing her RUclips channels! I’ve already got a half built mini jet boat in my garage. Honestly that one is from me watching too much RUclips.
Do not buy this and then get a jon boat. More like a $300 mariner 3 inflatable with a engine mount.
@@noway57 make more sense next time bro
I fabbed up a B&S 3hp Quantum 4 stroke to a Gnat mid and lower unit with idle and fast speed and choke control. Added extra muffler. Makes a fine add on trolling motor for a 20 plus foot Vee hull. No pee needed!
I've been looking for something to use on my trimaran sailboat when the wind dies. This looks promising.
I like mine. Its similar to this one. Make sure the lower unit has gear lubricant.
How much lower unit fluid should be in it?
That Lil thing would be perfect for these inland lakes up here in Michigan. Thanks a lot for the product video bud. Fish on man......
LOL self clearance..
I has hoping he filed the head of that bolt down enough to clear.
So when did Pauly Shore start making boating videos???
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Every one needs some kind of backup engine. Looks good for most small to mid size boats. I lean towards 2 stroke because my main engine is 2 stroke. Just have a gallon or 2 of regular
The engine is air cooled and the propeller shaft is water cooler.
I've been on the fence about buying this motor but after watching this video I'm about to order me one thanks a lot man..
Looks like it would be good for a square stern canoe.
The $40 bucket sitting next to the $300 engine needs to be a piece in a modern art museum about the contradictory duality of American consurmerism lol
LOLOL it was a gift! hah
Thing I'm concerned about it as if the exhaust points straight up, when it rains doesn't it fill the combustion chamber with water?
It's supposed to have a 90 degree fitting on it
😂😂😂😂 at least not when it's running
My fishing partner has a 1954 big twin 25 horse power evinrude. And I swear it's as big as 45 horse engines of today. And we've never clocked it exactly. But totally stock with two men in a 15' John boat it rides right beside 40 horse engines with tha same boat. But today's engine are crazy the power they put out.
So enjoyed this vid.. especially when y'all got on the snapper..i do have dumb question though ? Is that bolt above the prop used for something or was it placed there for mabye a safety while shipping block and is to be removed? Probably not because it probably has a purpose ..just curious
Good question, I see on a lot of other outboards that don't have any bolt in that area. Have a nice Day.
love the self-clearancing prop
Dayum! Honestly, I think if my 20ft boat motor left me stranded I could hold this in the water by hand rather than paddle my way to safety. But, the shaft looks too short, even for my small aluminum.
This is why I will buy the engine 🤔👋
When the prop spins it will expand out and clear the bolt it's beautiful down there your lucky to live where you do
Honestly I'm amazed. Seeing as to I had like $1200 in a similar powered merc. I wonder what the longevity of it is
"2 weeks" ! :)
That engine is the vertical shaft version of either the Huasheng 142f or 144f. They put out 2 and 2.1 hp respectively in stock form.
Great video. Looks like a good little motor to play around with. Does it have a 12 volt DC output to charge a trolling motor battery or running lights?
Just a guess but I'd wager no
🤣
soo glad i came across this video. i have been thinking about buying a used 12-14' flat bottom boat and getting a small engine just for river fishing locally. i have batteries just sitting on the shelf to use for trolling motors too.
You don't want to use marine engine oil in an air cooled engine. Air cooled engines run much hotter thus marine oil won't be viscous enough at those higher temps. Better to get normal lawnmower oil.
That's a good point to remember.
That may work for my 14 ft John boat for the River here in Tennessee! Thanks for sharing. I think I would have sanded the props down slightly to miss the nut above!
You're pretty brave to test out a cheap Ebay motor with out having a set of oars or a spare motor in your boat.
He had a cell phone!
A small collapsible paddle would fit up in the bow where his lifejackets are...could be one there
if you have a small riding mower you can do what i did and put a trailer ball on it and move trailers around easily.
Most entertaining engine review I’ve ever seen
I would like to purchase one due to watching your video . Very expressive performance from the motor and your expertise. Thanks
I would definitely buy that motor. It serves a specific purpose. I wish I would have had it when I was 16 fishing in Florida Town in Pace Florida.
Pro Tip - Cut shrimp into 3-4 pieces until you start catching fish. Drum and Snapper like smaller pieces. Greeting from Tarpon Springs. 1.0 hook
Lauson also made similar setups back in the day
It aint my 25 HP yamaha but its moving you at quite a nice pace... like a really powerful trolling motor on the front of my bass boat
Have a Ted Williams motor 4.5 horsepower from the 50s and its air-cooled but it also uses an impeller to keep underneath the engine cool which prevents vapor lock, and I guess keep the lower unit cool
Great motor for pond and small lake fishing. My dad used a trolling and battery all the time.
I have a Wizard outboard that has an air cooled motor on it but uses a water pump to just cool the exhaust before it is exited thru the prop center!
You remind me of Red Green. BTW, a set of oars is usually a good idea when you're out in a small fishing boat with a new motor.
we use an electric trolling motor on our inflatable when we are away camping but the battery is heavy & we are lucky to get 2 mph !!!
I think this engine would be perfect 👍
