About petting service dogs. Imagine you walk into an ER, and start hugging nurses and docs while they're performing CPR, checking charts, performing exams... all the while the patients are just left watching you in utter disbelief. That's what disturbing service dogs is.

As a general rule, I don’t try to pet service dogs, but if I think they’re very cute or a nice dog, I will tell the owner instead of distracting the dog. I’ll keep it short with “your dog is adorable” or “so nice to see such well behaved dogs” you can appreciate a dog from afar, you don’t NEED to pet them all, taking you you Karen’s out there!

My daughter had a similar situation we were in the airport and saw a service animal that came up to us and she asked me if she could pet it and I let her know that it's a working animal so we need to let it work. But the owner explained it's an emotional support animal and it was ok to pet it. So the owner was happy, my daughter was happy, and the dog was happy to get some pets.

I actually had to write up an employee for applauding when a customer said that. In the detailed punishment section I put “Told employee ‘We do not applaud in these circumstances’ then sent employee to the break room to think about their actions before returning to work. As the employee was engaged in mental work related to their role, they were not charged a lunch break and the time was paid.” It was official and they never did anything like it again (mainly because we never had a similar incident) but I could hardly punish them for doing something I was doing on the inside. 😉

I'm 61, and never in my life have I asked to speak to a manager.
There's a "neighbor" about 4 miles from me who is one of the most entitled people I've ever met. She loves to sue, and her answer to any problem with a company is to report them to corporate, or BBB, or any government agency that deals with their licencing.
She tried to get me to report an auto shop to get them shut down, because they had my car for 2 months. I wouldn't, and she got mad because I wouldn't tell her the name of the shop. She hasn't spoken to me since, GOOD!
Turned out, my car had extensive damage because rodents built a nest in the timing belt. They had to pull the whole motor out. They also replaced other chewed parts, and I bought a new set of tires with alignment and balancing. He loaned me a car to drive after the first month, no charge. He even sent his son out to my remote off-grid home to take me grocery shopping, twice! He spent many hours fixing my car, but when it was done it ran great. My total bill was $1600, including the new tires. I think that's wonderful and he's got a customer for life. The work he did would have been over $3000 anywhere else.
Oh, the entitled neighbor's name is for real, "Karyn"! 😆

I work in a UK supermarket and a lot of these clips really highlight the difference between US and UK stores
Cos if that lady in the 20 items refused to go to the right checkout, security would simply escort her out without any shopping 😂
Same with the ones making messes. Security will take you to holding, they will call the police and you will be banned from ever entering the store again 😂
(At least in the place I work)

    • @darcy5761
      @darcy5761 8 месяцев назад +8

I wish we would do that here in the US.

    • @macwinter7101
      @macwinter7101 7 месяцев назад +2

I worked security in the US, and in most cases, we also escort these people out and ban them so long as the store has available security officers. These scenes likely either happened before security arrived or in locations where they did not have available security. There is a shortage of security employees in the US, and if that is not the case in the UK, then maybe there could be some cultural reason behind it. But I would not say this likely represents any cultural difference. There could, however, be a difference regarding the laws. In the USA, security guards can easily be sued for battery or even assault if they use any force, including non-harmful touching, of a person. So we can only use force against them in the event it is justified by them being aggressive on noncompliant. Having said that, we have every right to make people leave property, including stores in the event they are causing problems. And if they refuse to comply with our requests, we are authorized to use appropriate force.
edit: I am not familiar with the laws in the UK regarding the criteria that constitute battery and assault, and I do not know what security officers are allowed to do with problematic individuals. Perhaps they have more authority than in the USA, so I cannot speak to how security might behave differently in these situations in the UK. My point is that security in the USA can and do remove problematic individuals from situations such as those portrayed in the video.

    • @macwinter7101
      @macwinter7101 7 месяцев назад +2

@@darcy5761 I was a security officer in the US and we do this. But people are usually able to film some action before security arrives. And in some cases, the employees decide to handle the individuals without calling security because they are managers and they feel it is their responsibility. But so long as a store has available security and the employees involved choose to call security, security will come and escort the problematic individuals off property or detain them until police arrive. If you ever witness such a scene as a customer, you are always free to go and find security, or find another employee, and have them contact security. There is nothing wrong with seeking assistance from security. Most of the time they are bored and will have no problem helping you, even for small things.

There are questions that people can ask, when you’re in a store or somebody can ask you what service the dog provides, but they can’t look at you and say what’s wrong with you or insist that because it’s a service dog they should be all love to Pet because I’ve run into that very frequently also, people stating that service dogs are meant to be in public for people to pet!

Once an actual animal welfare officer suddenly walked over and grabbed my dog’s collar to read through his tags while on an unrelated animal call where I was standing nearby.
I was like… YOU KNOW you can’t grab a service dog right?
Oh I’m just seeing if he has his city tags on..
Me..he’s a federally certified service animal, city tags don’t apply to him. We don’t live in this city, we’re working, and you’ve just gotten yourself fired, you know that right? It’s a crime to grab a working animal that belongs to the govt.
Yes she was fired. He really was govt. service animal on duty, I didn’t make that up. But it wasn’t only that, she was caught on our cameras driving slowly through the alleyway watching a house, then later breaking into the fenced yard to chase a screaming baby pet potbelly pig around a yard until it ran through a pet door into its house. She broke the gate in the process and tied a leash to secure it before calling the homeowner to state that their pig was running at large illegally and she had put it into its yard, etc etc etc. small town crazy, she prob works at Walmart now….
A million times I was asked what what wrong with me because I looked young and healthy and I’m like… I have ms…and cancer, so I’m terminal but thanks.

He offered us to fly standby but we were 3 adults and a toddler so we politely declined and asked about the next available flights. We joked with him about how it was all his fault that there was a snow storm in MA in February. He was able to book us on a flight the next day and he upgraded us to first class. If the person that needed their food remade came back in and was nice I always made sure that they left with something extra for having to come back like a dessert or something else that they wanted that sounded good to them or whoever they may have been bringing food back too. If your nice to people who work in customer service you are more likely to get something extra if that person is able to make those calls.

I would stop my girls and explain to them what the dogs were being trained for and how you NEVER run up to an unknown dog anyway BUT in this case you always ask someone if you can pet their dog and if they say no you respect that. If they had a harness on you did not bother the people at all. My girls grew up knowing that and I even caught my oldest daughter teaching her children the same lesson!

Never once had anybody get mad at me or her for that. In fact it usually makes the person smile to see another adult or kid know that you shouldn't touch or distract their dog because pupper is working and that you don't act like the human doesn't exist. The worst & most ungrateful Karen I ever had to deal with was a woman at a library. Her son needed a specific book for school. Our copies were all checked out. We had 2 locations so she wanted us to call the other one. We could see all of the copies of this book from both locations in our computer. As soon as we said that they are out too she started getting nasty about how we didn’t know what we were talking about and how the other location always has what she wants. She wanted our names and our manager. Another employee is trying to calm her while I start getting into other library’s sites. These are libraries that we are not a part of. It’s like Target calling Walmart for you if Target is out of your favorite shampoo or something. I was under no obligation to do this for her, but I wanted to help her to get her to leave. I found one copy at another library 10 minutes away. I had them hold it for her and found out what she needed to get a library card at their branch. I thought she would be somewhat satisfied or grateful that I had found one. Nope. She stomps off to find the manager while her 10 year old son is trailing her looking embarrassed. After several minutes she stomps back by me to leave and yells “Bet you won’t have anything to say now” all smug like she won something? What? My manager came to us and we all laughed about her ridiculousness once she heard our side. I felt sorry for her son who clearly has had to deal with drama queen mom embarrassing him before. Absolutely out of options I try for the library (literally 10 minutes before closing for that day). I explain the situation, apologize for the late moment thing and think to myself "Okay, you're way too late. You won't get it today and you're gonna fail." Was my first semester and I was sooo afraid of failing.
And this nice man that was the boss there smiled at me, nodded and took my USB stick. "We'll see", he said and when all three printers in the front didn't work, he went to print it out with their own printer that was in the back for employees only! He handed me the paper well past their opening times and wished me luck. And this man needed a cane to walk around - he'd wobbled all the way through the entire library with me and I could tell he was in pain, but he never said one word about it.

From the time he could understand, I began teaching my animal loving son the difference between dogs which are "pets" & dogs which are "special helpers" to their owner.
He should never just run up to ANY dog & pet it (you don't know if the dog will bite or not). Of he is interested in the "special helper" (service) dog, then he must ALWAYS tell the person how much you like their dog & ASK if the dog is working right then.
We were at a hotel many years ago. At that time, my son was around 5. There was a blind man at the desk checking in & he had the most beautiful (HUGE) poodle service dog.
We were waiting to check out & I noticed my son checking out his dog -- just looking at him. Then my little boy walked up to the man (he was with a companion who was checking them in) & tapped him on the arm & said, "Excuse me, Sir. I just want to tell you that your dog is so pretty & big. Is he working right now?" I could tell the man was surprised, but he was SO NICE to my son & said thank you. He told my son his dog was NOT working right then & he actually asked my son if he'd like to pet his dog.
Oh boy! My son was thrilled! He pet & hugged that dog & received a lot of licks.
My husband & I spoke with the man & his companion while my son was playing with his dog. He told me how much he appreciated us teaching our son to never just assume he can pet a working dog. He & his companion both said they had adults just assume they could pet the dog when he was working. They were so surprised that a 5 year old was more aware of a working dog than most adults.
They complimented us on how polite & well mannered my son was.

So while she was being obnoxious I continued my job checking receipts as required, she wanted a manager but complained more if I started walking away to get one. Then the language exploded, she must have thought I had telepathic powers to get a manager without leaving her there.
So off to the nearby security Mangers office, still doing my job.... NO one there, walk back slowly her still throwing a tantrum like a 3 yr old.(or todays woke left). Friend trying to get her to just show the receipt. Eventually able to walk down to the service desk and call for a manager.
Front End Super didn't even need to know why, just called for management.
I don't think any of the managers really wanted to deal with the garbage so it took them about 5 minutes to get to the front, of course during that time I continued doing my job which pissed this woman off even more. As the friend passes me the receipt, Several managers appear out of the wood work. I am getting ready to say thank you and let them go when Karen reaches over my should rudely yanking the receipt out my hand. with the statement... " You don't need to look at that, the managers are here, We'll see what happens now."
I only wish management would have led them out my door, but I guess they didn't want the customer more pissed seeing my face after being told I was doing my job and that she had to leave after slowing her up even more as they verified her receipt and not just for a single item.
About 20 minutes later after management reviewed the security footage, they couldn't understand how I held my composure for so long as they initially thought it was a quick outburst from the Karen.

I had a blind Spanish professor in college. She introduced her dog and let us pet him the first day by walking thru the class and said this is the only time. The dog got all waggy and was off for the rest of class. We all never touched her dog again but saw the dog protect her from steps, step her around the desk so she didn’t bump and watched the prof’s every step. The prof wiuld ‘good boy ‘ under her breathe. That made me really appreciate how well the guide dog kept her from all harm. I saw her on campus too, block her from crossing the street until the dog would follow a group of people crossing, or until urged across by the prof. It was illuminating.

I just encountered a service dog situation at a Target yesterday. There were 2 service dogs wearing their identifying vests with 2 people. There was a friendly conversation going on between them and an employee, and the whole time the employee was scratching the dogs' lower backs/butts. When my son walked up, he said beautiful dogs; I agreed then said the employee must be good friends with them since she was petting the dogs. Suddenly the lady owner of the dogs saw us looking, and said "She's an official butt scratcher for the dogs" I told that's what I figured since they were service animals and we shouldn't just pet them. The lady nodded. A few moments later, her and the man came up to us and asked if we would like to scratch their butts. As I started petting one of them, the dog suddenly sat and just stared at me. I stopped immediately. The lady said, "She's a medical alert dog, and she's not happy." I said "I understand completely and that's why I stopped" the dog then moved behind the woman and just stared again. So I took a couple of steps back to give her room. The dog's behavior was clearly signalling that she did not want to interact, and I respected that. The man and woman continued on their way with their service animals. Now, I ask you, how hard is that to do? Just respect the animals and their humans; go to a humane society if you need to pet random dogs - those places are filled with animals that need love

I didn't see the vest. It's not like the animal has a sign on its head, which is all I saw. This was a place where its normal for people to bring their dogs into the store with them. So no, initially, I did not think beyond, "awe cute pupper." I didn't even say much, just "hi handsome." He came out from behind his owner after I said that, then I saw the vest. I didn't interact with the dog any further, but the owner decided instantly that I was a jerk and treated me as such.

I was at a Walmart in a checkout lane that was closing. The clerk told me to tell the lady behind me that she was the last one as the clerk was ending her shift because she had to pick up her kid at daycare. Of course, I did this. Then another woman came with a full cart behind her. The woman behind me immediately told the new lady that the lane was closed. This was also indicated by the light being off.
The new woman started to scream and wail. I'm not talking about a little, she was in full-blown alarm mode. She then starts to hurl insults and demands at the poor clerk. The clerk calmly replied that the lane was closed and that she had to leave to pick up her pre-schooler. This insulting continued for a long time, but when the lady knew it would get her nowhere, she pulled her cart out of the lane. "Thank goodness," I thought. What did the lady do? She stormed out of the store with a full cart of groceries without paying for them! I saw her doing this and alerted the clerk, who said she would not risk her life for a cart of groceries (I can't blame her). I finished my order and raced to see what the lady was doing. She tossed all her unpaid groceries into her car and hastily drove off. What was she driving? A brand new G Wagon!
Even though the event didn't directly involve me I was still upset hours later. Man, I really felt for that poor clerk. She looked around 19 years old and had amazing composure. Poor girl, just trying to make a living and taking abuse from a horrible lady who was so entitled that she thought she should have her Walmart groceries for free. So sad, really.
My friend is a general contractor who remodels higher-end homes. He often works in tandem with other companies, such as designers, but he is his own boss. Sometimes a job runs over his estimate because he encounters flaws in the previous build that must be corrected before he can pass inspection. I could tell many stores, but here is a recent one. He had additional work that ran around $5,000 on the job, but when he asked to get paid, the homeowner would not return his calls (the homeowner had been very demanding and would constantly call during the build). Finally, my friend sent a certified letter, and the homeowner called the design company (that was not his boss), noting that he "wouldn't talk to the help" but offered to "split the difference" by paying only $2,500 of the $5,000. This meant that my friend had to absorb the balance. Ultimately, my friend took the offer as he was so frustrated. Since entitled people can get away with it, their behavior continues.

I had to wash in the tub and dry on a line in the front room because I didn't have enough for laundry on top of school, gas, electricity, rent, gas and telephone. But I made it work. I can honestly say that it is much more of an achievement to make your life work with just enough money every month, to have a home full of love where no one has to worry about being warm, dressed, and fed. As someone with a legitimately qualified assistance/service dog, I get SO frustrated when people just bring their normal pet dogs into shops when they're not allowed to. It poses a HUGE risk for people like myself if the random dog (who isn't even supposed to be in there) isn't properly trained (as seems to be the case here,) as my dog has a job to do, and it can be extremely dangerous for a working dog to become distracted or even potentially attacked by a random dog. It's also people like that who make us legitimate handlers look like fakes, and I've had so many instances where I haven't been allowed in a store or yelled at to leave, as the people working there are convinced that he's not a real service dog and therefore aren't breaking the law by not letting us in.

I worked at Home Depot closing shift. We used carts to put our restock empty boxes in.
Like I said it was night so not busy. Plenty of carts. I got called away to help someone. When I got back maybe 10min later I found all the empty boxes thrown to the ground and my cart gone.
This has happened before so I hunted it down. I had a cart with paint stains on the handle. Found it in hardware unattended. I looked around and saw a late 20s guy nearby reading a box by a shelf.
Delicately I pulled the cart backwards out of his side eyeline and BOOKED it to the back and ditched it. Then returned to the scene to see the satisfying sight of that guy looking around for "his" cart.
Don't take carts workers are clearly using. I've also had carts taken as va customer. I left a cart at the end to walk up a crowded Target toiletry aisle and came back 3min later. My stuff was tossed out.
    Just stop it.

Take out was fine, I just wanted one last burger before baby came. Arrived there 5min before the time they told us (less than 10min after we called) and they said no, kitchen is closed. If we hadn't called, I would have been cool with it. Don't give a time on the phone and 'close' early. This was a small place, only 2 ppl working there/answering phones. I have never eaten at that restaurant since and based on the burgers they have been offering lately, they are having a hard time attracting customers.
This is in Seoul, not many good burger places either. We ended up getting Alabama style bbq that night so it turned out for the better. More expensive but better.

I had an older lady get mad at me, who was stuck in the little box at my register, for not checking her out. I offered 3 times to check her out, each time she said to her had her stuff already on the belt at another register behind me. In front of her, a mother had her little toddler in the cart beside me was using a WIC card and the process does take a bit to do and it takes a little longer when someone is being taught how to do it. Well the older lady got enraged because “she had somewhere to be” and the mother was holding up everyone. The mother, who was obviously tired of the woman, made two comments that enraged the older lady more. The mother pretty much sarcastically said she was sorry for taking up the older lady’s time and that she hopes she makes it to where she has to be on time. The older lady handed me some meat that she had in the cart and as I scanned the meat, the older lady stormed off and made jabs at me for not checking anyone out. Funny thing was my manager was standing by the other register and heard everything, and the mother said that I offered 3 times to check her out and she down right refused.

I have felt true hate for people who do not keep their dogs leashed where it is clearly not ok. Once a dog was running after a boy of around 13 who was scared shitless - it was a residential area where there's cars, bicycles, children, other animals. The (very large) dog thought that the boy wanted to play so he kept following the boy around. The owner, when she had finally caught the dog (dog wasn't trained very well so didn't come right away when she called), didn't say sorry to the boy, no, she scolded him for running away! Because 'he should have realised that the dog thought they were playing'... I still see red when I think of it. I was chased by a neighbour dog in a similar way when I was a kid and I have been very apprehensive of dogs ever since. It's pretty much never the dog's fault, and as in OP's example, situations can get dangerous for the dog as well (fights with other dogs, traffic, etc). Those people shouldn't have pets. They ruin it for the well trained, well behaved nice dogs and their owners.
