In the 1950s, the polio virus terrified American families. Parents tried “social distancing”-ineffectively and out of fear. Polio was not part the life they had signed up for. In the otherwise comfortable World War II era, the spread of polio showed that middle-class families could not build worlds entirely in their control.

Note the name of that theater where the Oscars ceremonies were once held. The Pantages family had a very scandalous history. The old man was a Greek immigrant who made good in America eventually owning a theater chain. He stood trial for rape, and separately his wife was tried for vehicular homicide DWI when she swerved into a vehicle occupied by Japanese Americans. Then there was second son Lloyd Pantages. Just use your search engine to see him. I'll just say, he was clean shaven but there were beards everywhere when he was in public.

Think about today's Oscars, particularly 2019, & what you see is an absence of social grace & respect. Combine this with politics, political agenda, & just lack of class, with Hope absent, & what one has is a nadir in Hollywood. Yes...an Oscar which anyone from 1955-1970 wouldn't even recognize. Protesting by standing in the aisle during the ceremony--this is where Hollywood is as this institution tolerated such behavior. No class now that Hope & Carson are gone.

The Oscars have some of the worst writing of any ceremony - and film, for that matter. The six minutes of back-to-back, non-stop quips by Bob Hope - most barely worth even the slightest of smiles - was tiresome and boring. It reminds me of when Billy Crystal hosted one year - same thing. Make a few quips and get on with the show. I’d be willing to bet the audience feels the same way. Enough, already!
