I don't understand how A Star is Born did not get even nominated for best cinematography. It is probably the first really "artistic" color/Cinemascope movie, exponentially more beautiful than Seven Brides!
That Hitchcock didn't win directing award for Rear Window is a travesty. The film wasn't even up for best film either but the sappy Three Coins in the Fountain was.
Wasn't she lovely. Wouldn't it be fun to go back in time? Every era has its challenges but 1954 seemed like a great time to be alive, way before my time. People behaved and dressed well in public. Women behaved with grace, men with chivalry. Most of all, people seemed contented, the country was united, the future was bright.

In the 1950s, the polio virus terrified American families. Parents tried “social distancing”-ineffectively and out of fear. Polio was not part the life they had signed up for. In the otherwise comfortable World War II era, the spread of polio showed that middle-class families could not build worlds entirely in their control.
Была одна актриса, которая за своим почетным Оскаром в тот год даже не пришла, так же, как и не ходила на какие либо другие мероприятия. Это великая Грета Гарбо!
Note the name of that theater where the Oscars ceremonies were once held. The Pantages family had a very scandalous history. The old man was a Greek immigrant who made good in America eventually owning a theater chain. He stood trial for rape, and separately his wife was tried for vehicular homicide DWI when she swerved into a vehicle occupied by Japanese Americans. Then there was second son Lloyd Pantages. Just use your search engine to see him. I'll just say, he was clean shaven but there were beards everywhere when he was in public.
Back then all men looked like retired military officers, and all women looked like glamerous royal family guests. It must be very difficult and expensive to maintain a wife like that.
But judy garland in A Star Is Born was everything, Comedy, Drama, Tragedy, Sing and dance.she did all of that in one movie.. and you say judy didn't deserve the oscar????? Grace Kelly is my favourite actress, but that Oscar belonged to Judy, Grace Kelly would have won a supporting actress for Rear Window or High Noon or Dial M For Murder, and if there wasn't judy performance that year I would say yes grace deserve it, but not when you have Judy's Greatest Performance

Bob seems very out of place in that era, far ahead of his time. I don't think they were ready for that kind of wit. Bob is doing what Dave, Jay and other talkshow hosts were and are doing today.
I still say Judy garland was robbed of the best actress Oscar for a star is born I'm sure Grace Kelly won it because she was retiring to marry her Prince like a goodbye gift at Judy's expense
Think about today's Oscars, particularly 2019, & what you see is an absence of social grace & respect. Combine this with politics, political agenda, & just lack of class, with Hope absent, & what one has is a nadir in Hollywood. Yes...an Oscar which anyone from 1955-1970 wouldn't even recognize. Protesting by standing in the aisle during the ceremony--this is where Hollywood is as this institution tolerated such behavior. No class now that Hope & Carson are gone.
The last high-class Academy Awards ceremony was hosted by Steve Martin & Alec Baldwin. It's been downhill since then. They don't have the good taste or sense to ask Steve Martin to return.
The Oscars have some of the worst writing of any ceremony - and film, for that matter. The six minutes of back-to-back, non-stop quips by Bob Hope - most barely worth even the slightest of smiles - was tiresome and boring. It reminds me of when Billy Crystal hosted one year - same thing. Make a few quips and get on with the show. I’d be willing to bet the audience feels the same way. Enough, already!

What a great list of films for '54, their music, actors, and other great attributes.
Certainly one of the best post-war film years.

Bob Hope is as slick as always. Such a great comedian and the best emcee.

Class, good dressings, no political discussion and jabs. This is what the Oscars should strive to be like.
