Many thanks for bringing us this marvellous film from the great age of records. It’s so full of treasures - the dolls house size record store, and Kathy clearly bursting out; ‘That’s my record!’ When her driver turns on the radio. Priceless. If only life were so pleasant and perfect.
Remember when music was made by musicians? Even the library music they use throughout this piece is better than the copy/paste computer generated homogeneity of modern documentaries. Thanks for posting this.
Bob Marley Aka The wailers had a rehearsal session in this amazing building on 24 .10.73 It was recently released officially on DVD finally see the footage Cd and 2LPS which is great as on jacket the tower looks great One love
sorry to be so off topic but does any of you know of a tool to get back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost the password. I would love any assistance you can give me
@Prince Edwin I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Prince Edwin DAMN IT REALLY WORKED :O I literally got access to my ig account details within about 45 minutes by using the site. I had to pay 15$ but for sure worth it =) Thank you so much you saved my account :D
After C-9 comes C-20 from Reel L-10, C-43A, from Reel L-18 and the tale end of C-7, from Reel L-7, Years later, I wrote words to C-7 and retitled it as “The Metro Tunnel”, It’s on my fourth album called “The William Loose Songbook Album”, a tribute to the late William Loose, who I’ve met in 1984, William Loose (1910-1991).
Also heard are C-39B, from Reel L-17, C-13, from Reel L-8, repeating C-9, then come C-10, from Reel L-8, (The Avon Waltz), TC-200, from Reel L-1, C-84A from Reel M-18, and TC-203, from Reel L-1.
On a point detail, Kathy’s Dream Date album was on a Capitol rainbow label, which I always supposed came about around 1960 - two years after this film. Incidentally, the real Kathy, Sue Rainey had her debut album the year this film was made - on a blue label.
One error in the copy here...King Records was the first company to hava an all-in one plant. Offices, studios, cover artists, photography, mastering. pressing plants, writers, A&R, even the printing was all done at 1530 Brewster Ave., Cincinnati. I toured the sprawling, still-standing King buildings a couple of years ago.
No, it was pretty much the same then, if not MORE SO. They paid ea. artist very little then. 1.5 cents per record, 2 cents if they were lucky. I also commented about it above.
This was not intended for the general public - with the boring introduction of the Capitol executives, their names, their positions. Strange use of a song with a religious lyric and bouncy rhythm.
This girl Cathy is not doing her own singing That is Sue Raney a new singer who was just signed up to Capitol Why did they not use her? Maybe this Cathy had someone on the inside at Capital
I heard that in the 1950s Yma Sumac Outsold even Frank Sinatra at Capitol she made more money for Capitol that Frank Sinatra did for a while there! Why was she conspicuously absent from this video that’s a good question!
For Kathy that about wraps it up?! I don’t think so that would be just the beginning now they would put her on tour to promote the fucking album she’ll be working her ass off for the next five years and probably getting pittance for it while the record company made all the money! Nice to know somethings never change!
Kathy who? Warning, fictional movie! Hmm, small time actress Barbara Gayle? Somebody at Capitol must have seen one of her 4 appearances on "The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet". Sue Raney? A real Capitol artist, but never had a Top40 hit. State of the art studios? All I saw was a single-track recorder. Movie studios had been using 3-track since the 1930's. Most recording studios had been using 2-track for a few years and by 1958 were using 3-track. Where's the famous basement echo chambers? Besides original recordings, these echo chambers were used for the Capitol "Duophonic" fake stereo process. Remember the Beatles first couple of "stereo" albums and the Beach Boys "Duophonic" LP's into 1967? Heck, even ol' Tennessee Ernie benifited.
Harley, since this was made primarily for retail record shop owners, I don't think they intended to get deep enough into the technical side to satisfy us audiophiles, historians and collectors. Still, this is stuff you didn't see everyday and is a great look at the late '50s record business.
So Kathy is played by one person, and her "vocal" is recorded by someone else a la Milli Vanilli, and this is pre-Wrecking Crew. So much for documentary authenticity.
How this guy continually holds 'fragile' Kathy by the elbow 4:23 👈🏻such a gent...... Different daze indeed. "The big one in the sky" , which obviously is a "he"...... 15:26👈🏻That's the way to handle vinyl ofcourse , get fatty fingerprints into the delicate grooves , so people will be in need of a new record as fast as possible ?
Apparently, Kathy never existed. Was just a character played by actress Barbara Gayle. In the year previous to this small role, she played a credited extra as "Voguette #2" in the film "Rockabilly Baby." That's all I could find. Maybe you can find out more. I wonder whether she had done anything else. There is mention of another actress (?) with that same name who was on Ozzy & Harriet in 1952 but I'm wondering if they are the same person or not.
Old-fashioned films, however faked-up they might be, were hardly ever in a hurry. Today's videos cram in far too much too fast. But what's with the men always guiding the girl by holding her arm? What do they think --- that she can't think well enough to move the right way on her own? Something about that bothers me. For those who wonder, the light at the top of the spire blinks out "HOLLYWOOD" in Morse code.
That's how gentlemen treated ladies back in those days. Before the feminists made it a crime. They didn't have you and the feminazis to consult back then. Maybe if he'd kicked her in the butt, shoved her around and slapped her a few times, you wouldn't be so bothered.
That "A&R" guy's a bit too "handsy" with Cathy, who he just met. Also, he seems right in her face, too close for comfort ALL THE TIME after her arrival, holding on to her elbow to lead her around. Sexist & demean much? How would he handle a male performer. Also, when she signs on the dotted line, standard practice then was that she'd sing & perform her heart out for 1.5 measly cents per HER record sold; 2 cents "if she's lucky." Capitol/EMI gave the BEATLES 2 cents per records sold. They each were multi-millionaires. Capitol probably earned HUNDREDS of million$ of dollar$ on Beatles records alone, then The Beach Boys, et. al. Great History! Thanks for the upload.
Let's see, a 33 record was about 75 cents retail back then. So at 1.5 cents per record, she would have been getting 2% of the gross. Considering the record store, the truck drivers to deliver the records, the people to market the records, the studio musicians, the people doing the technical recording, the rent on the Capitol Records building, and the 500 or so people working there that all have to be paid off that record, I think 2% ain't all that bad. As for 'handsy' that was proper culture among gentlemen and gentlewomen those days. Gentlemen assisted ladies. That is how they were taught. You have been taught that gentlemen never touch women. That would be considered extremely rude back then, and would have earned you no points with the ladies, and could have gotten you fired if they complained enough to other people, as they likely would have done. How would he have behaved with a male? He would have put his hand on his back, or over his shoulder, and would have shaken hands. About the only difference is he would have been unlikely to have held hands, as could happen between a man and a woman in that era. People touched people back then. Now it is illegal.

Love it! This should have been done with all the great studios. Unfortunately, too many of them no longer exist.
This does a beautiful job of capturing the era. Thanks for posting.

This was gold! A RUclips Gem!
C-82 Main Title, C-80, from Reel M-16, C-8, from Reel L-8, and more from the Capitol Production Music Library, It’s A Classic.
Wow! Now I understand why no Rock and Roll artist never made it big in the 1950s at Capitol records!
Gene Vincent did Ok.
Good thought. Speaking of Gene Vincent, it’s a mystery to me that they made so many records with him. I’m glad they did, though.
This is a gem!

used in the movie WRECKING CREW
also this should be on dvd
After C-8, is Phil Green’s EM-107 underscore, William Loose’s C-4, from Reel L-7, and C-9 from Reel L-8, plus more “Capitol” Tunes.
There’s one ZIV Tune, toward the end of the film, TC-41, from Reel L-2, 16 different tunes, from the Capitol Production Music Library.
AWESOME.
Did you see the smog? See all the way to the ocean my ass! Lol
Thank God I'm signed to Capitol Records
How is it
Kathy's album cover shows that she prefers a menage-a-cinq on her dream date.
Also heard are C-39B, from Reel L-17, C-13, from Reel L-8, repeating C-9, then come C-10, from Reel L-8, (The Avon Waltz), TC-200, from Reel L-1, C-84A from Reel M-18, and TC-203, from Reel L-1.

King Bee More people need to know the history of that company more than Capitol.
King Bee KING RECORDS JAMES BROWN
i live in cincinnati :)
king is still standing but barely. i wish it was preserved. all thats left is the shell of the building.
Walllichs' first name was spelled Glenn not Glen :)
What is the status of the capital records tower today in 2021? does anybody know? Are they trying to get into a condominium or something?! Bastards!
Does anyone know the song she sings? I can’t find it
Seems to be a religious tune
today unfortunately, it's " how much money u gon make me?" If u look good n got ass... u signed!! never mind actual talent anymore..
No, it was pretty much the same then, if not MORE SO. They paid ea. artist very little then. 1.5 cents per record, 2 cents if they were lucky. I also commented about it above.

Maybe someone at CAPITOL had the “inside of Kathy” if you know what I mean
Thanks for mentioning Sue Raney. I should have recognized her voice. She was married to my step-brothers' father for 20 plus years......
where is Yma Sumac she made a hit on Capitol !!!

@@nealsausen4651 too ethnic my guess
Y is she signing papers w/o her own representation??🤣🤣🤣
Because the wonderful folks at Capitol were nice enough to take all her publishing rights in perpetuity!

@@kingbee1500 Thank you, King. Irritates me too when people have to needlessly pick things apart.
So many people ... lotta salaries to pay... no wonder they took the lions share of profits

As much as we all enjoy seeing them, those pants look too loose to feature such a thing. More than likely just gathered fabric.
Not sexist at all
