hi lisa. thank you for your comments about carole king. that's a part of the laurel canyon experience that i did not address in my interview. during that time, many of the 'canyon musicians' emerged from being our local neighbors to become international 'superstars'. but that did not alter their lives when the made a turn on 'sunset blvd' and drove up the canyon. egos were left behind in the traffic. we were all involved in a lifestyle that affirmed our basic values.

I could listen to Elliot Mintz all day. Articulate, intelligent and very discreet, yet still telling the tale. A born story teller, I wish there was time travel, I would go back to that time and that place.
Watching/listening to Elliot Mintz' interview brings a sadness to my heart. As a child of the late 60's & early 70's, the memories seem more like a dream rather than a reality that actually happened. I don't expect to see, in my lifetime, a resurgence of that ethos that longed for peace, prosperity and camaraderie within all of humanity. So this interview for me was bittersweet.

Laguna beach was like that in the 60,’s as well and into the 70’s. Being born in. 1961 i was a little hippie child. I remember the sawdust festival 1969 and the adults forming a dancing locomotive and me as a happy free 8 year old being included int he chain. I get every single thing Elliott is talking about. There was so much land in the beach community. My sister and i would walk for a mile or 2 around the San Clemente headlands, down the beach to the pier and we were 6 and 8 yrs old!!!! What a glorious time it was
I lived in Laurel Canyon from September 1966 until around March 1968. I was 18 when I arrived and stayed on Kirkwood Drive at first right on the corner where it turns off of Laurel Canyon Blvd, later just behind the Canyon Country Store and then on Ridpath Drive with recording engineer John Haeny. I played bagpipes at various parties and events or just standing on a hilltop. I played for the opening night of the Magic Mushroom and at openings in Doug Weston's Troubador as well as at the Renaissance Faire and the one-off "Fantazma a la Fellini". I was recorded many times but haven't found any copies of any. I returned to Scotland in 1970 after a spell in the Balkans and have lived here ever since.
@@elliotmintzvideos Jackson Browne and I had a close friendship before his first album was recorded and we got together again a couple of times when he came to Scotland. One thing which I recall about Laurel Canyon from the '60s which doesn't come across in any of the recent accounts is that the "creatives and hippies" were by no means the majority. Most of the houses there belonged to middle-class professionals and many of them openly objected to the hippies and the noise of the music.
Outstanding. For 20 yrs, I lived where LC & Vent. meet. It no longer “feels” as it did in those decades now gone ... so quickly. The sun was warmer, the breeze was more tropical, and it was still a “town”, yet to be overrun by gaudy commercial interests.
Living my whole life north of New York City, this was a real treat to learn about the magical place called Laurel Canyon, thanks for the wonderful tour Elliot!

I really like this bloke. When I first saw I was not sure on his personality but realised he is a very intelligent and spiritual person. I watch at night and the way he speaks makes me feel calm and sends me to sleep. Does that sound crazy. I am a very bad sleeper. Seems a great person.
Very well spoken Elliot Mintz. I felt a lot of that as a child, in the 70s. I also lament its passing. My friend's mom was into composting and had her records: Simon & Garfunkel, Mommas and the Poppas, etc., and I learned a lot from her. My parents were old-school drinkers, and I loved them, but to spend much of my childhood in a very cultured home was a blessing. Probably why I still love the Bealtles, the Byrds, and am an old beatnik still.

Has anyone ever noticed Elliot's voice is made for ASMR? Before I knew what ASMR was, I listened to his videos for his voice - that captivating, soothing and entrancing voice!
i'm aware of those who say they get an asmr reaction from my voice. but it is not intentional on my part. there are also many people who feel i speak to slowly, have a monotone sound and find my voice to be annoying. whereas, i do pay attention to my 'words' and try to express myself with clarity......i'm not particularly pleased by the sound of my recorded voice. i would like it to have far more bass in it. just listen to orson wells, sir richard burton or jim ladd. those are truly magnificent voices.
Yes Elliot, my best friend is very much like you.. He also was afflicted by a physically created stutter and he participated in a developmental speech program, and as a result, he has advanced very, Very well.. Thank you for your excellent work my friend... Lary

What attracted the creative person to Laurel Canyon is pretty simple really. It was a beautiful setting. It was in-between the Valley, where many people lived, and Hollywood, where most of the music and film industry was located. I Lived in the San Fernando Valley for many years when I was in my early 20's. I joined a band, and eventually moved into Laurel Canyon, because of the "vibe", the atmosphere and its central location near the studios. The 60's and 70's were a magical time everywhere. San Francisco had a huge artist and musician contingent very similar to the Laurel Canyon/Hollywood area. I lived in Frisco for a short time in between bands. I was there in Haight-Ashbury during the "Summer of Love" in 1967. And yea I had flowers in my long hair, and wore bell-bottom jeans. It was an amazing experience, and sort of the swansong for that area, which was soon to be run over by hard drugs and the violence that entails. I got out of there and headed back down to the LA area to connect with some record producers just after the big scene in the Haight. That was the first time I lived in Laurel Canyon, in 1967. I migrated between the Valley, Hollywood, and Laurel Canyon throughout those years. I was a singer and musician the first half of that era, and then got into special effects cinema around 1981. The Howling (1) was the first film I worked on. I was in the film industry around 20 years. I finally "escaped" from LA in 1998, moving to San Diego. \\][//
liked the way he mused about Greenwich Village and 'the left bank' in Paris to Laurel Canyon as places on the Earth where interesting people come to play

I think it was the sense of freedom that drew all the artists to these meccas. I lived on Happy Trail in Topanga. The LA Times used to give away plots of land in TC with a subscription.
It was everywhere after the Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and it lasted from 1964 to 1971 everyday and every night excitement that you could cut with a knife!It inspired yours truly to become a guitarist even in the shithole town of Lynchburg,Va.!
That's the way it was in Mount Adams Cincinnati where I grew up in the 60s and 70s the same way of life I'm 60 now. I road the racer with the Partridge Family at kings Island in 1971 David Cassidy said I had a good Barber I was 11 at the time and I maid my Barber cut my hair just like his I would take the teen IDOL MAGAZINE TO THE BARBER SHOP. I BECAME A Barber AT 19 in 1981 till 2015. Thank you for the memories of bell bottoms, silk shirts with large colors faded blue jeans walking bear foot earth shows frisbee toss a snake on a leash strawberry rolling papers with a built in roach clip and psychedelic paintings and beads in door ways and incense and a lot of love from one another.
What's changed since those magical days? Well, it was easier to earn a living, the dollar went a lot further, hence things were a lot more relaxed... The no fun police (lawyers) controlled things but there weren't as many of them hiding behind every bush... Today, people determine their net worth by how much funny money they possess, but back then it was more about the creative aspect and the content of ones character that determined social status.
This brings back memories.. I used to listen to Elliott's talk radio after I get off of playing music. Very very interesting man Nice interview! Peace and love

Did you know Alan Watts? He was always on KPFK. Very much changed our consciousness . I was 17 when I saw the Doors in 1968 at the Forum. Want one of my favorite night. Yes I am a native. I used to drive through the Laurel Canyon with the top down, all the trees.

Joni Mitchell's next-door neighbor was Canned Heat's, Bob 'The Bear' Hite. Bob's house caught fire and burned down. Steppenwolf did a photo shoot for their upcoming 3rd album, 'At your Birthday Party,' at Bob's burned-out house that became the albums cover photo.

Grew up in Laurel Canyon... "1962- 1974... Went to Wonderland Avenue School... Could tell you a lot of stories, however Wonderland Avenue was not a good place to get a education at that time... Green Valley Road

Elliot I’m curious if you ever came across Jim Morrison and if so what is your recollection of the great man? I know you mention him in this interview but there was no further elaboration? You speak so poetically and precise about “those times”. You do it with such soothing, dulcet times, in such a vivid technicolour that you transport the listener to the canyon. You were a great mediator between the artist and the public, a kind of kindred spiritual conduit that bridged that gap. i never met jim. but remember being at the 'whisky-a-go-go' the first night 'the doors' performed. it was obvious to all that they were witnessing what would become one of the most extraordinary bands in the history of rock.

The Doors were playing “The London Fog” before they became the Whiskey resident house band. I want to say that you’re interviews with John Lennon always move me. A lot of your hour length audio interview are awesome. I love the interview on the beach were you ask John Lennon “will the Beatles ever get back together?”. He seemed so optimistic, happy and full of joy. The world lost a “great light” the day his soul left this mortal coil but his spirit and his legacy will last forever into eternity. I love your channel and in particular your measured style. Classy, refined and cool. I’m still relatively young but I so long for the time when “music was real”. The 60’s/70’s and the Laurel Canyon scene was sadly before my own time. So many wonderful, eclectic artists. Even journalism rarely raises its head above gutter level. Elliot Mintz do you remember what year the big tree fell down across Lookout Mnt. Rd. From the Log House? I know it was late 60s, I was living in the house the night it fell and crashed the tree house to the ground. Also, do you remember Nancy Segura from later years in Point Dume, she worked for Dylan. Something that was always on my mind... There was a band that would rehearse all the time on Wonderland... on the corner of Wonderland right by the school... Who was that?
I remember hearing the music too! Like daily. The music echoed through the canyon and like you, wasn't sure where it was coming from or who it was? Closest musicians to our school were Joni Mitchell and the Three Dog Night.
had the pleasure in 1969 to live in LA and part of that in Laurel Canyon, it was georgoous, , hanging off the side of a mt....stoner musicians ev where...….and then manson happened in the summer. ev thing stopped.
Question......I can't help but wonder; if Laurel Canyon was such a magical place ( once these musicians ) started making " money" why did they move away rather then stay and just upgrade their their living situation with a bigger house, more expensive car, etc if that's what they were looking to do.
Many went on to Haight Ashbury but it only stayed community like Laurel Canyon for about 1 year and then people moved out to Marin and Sonoma seeing each other and sharing holidays and of course concerts but now there were locks on the doors.
What is laurel canyon like now, at least the way it looks? Are the old houses still there, or have they been demolished and replaced? What was the main architectural style of the old neighborhood houses?
BTW I used to sneak into Zappas back yard and catch Crawdads from his pond... got caught with Raydon Chong... smoking pot at Wonderland in the 4th grade... our yard duty teacher told us not to do it again and took the rest of the pot...
Mount Adams land of the hippies and Harley's . I went to the school of performing arts was told I would be a grate actor I had dyslexia but I could memorize everybody's lines in the play. long blond hire blue eyes 5-8 140 . But I was in the wrong city. Cincinnati Oh. Now all the rich yuppies live there now nothing is the same nothing. It over looks Oh river and the city of Cincinnati I still live in Cincinnati.

I Lived in the San Fernando Valley for many years when I was in my early 20's. I joined a band, and eventually moved into Laurel Canyon, because of the "vibe", the atmosphere and its central location near the studios.
The 60's and 70's were a magical time everywhere. San Francisco had a huge artist and musician contingent very similar to the Laurel Canyon/Hollywood area. I lived in Frisco for a short time in between bands. I was there in Haight-Ashbury during the "Summer of Love" in 1967. And yea I had flowers in my long hair, and wore bell-bottom jeans. It was an amazing experience, and sort of the swansong for that area, which was soon to be run over by hard drugs and the violence that entails. I got out of there and headed back down to the LA area to connect with some record producers just after the big scene in the Haight.
That was the first time I lived in Laurel Canyon, in 1967. I migrated between the Valley, Hollywood, and Laurel Canyon throughout those years.
I was a singer and musician the first half of that era, and then got into special effects cinema around 1981. The Howling (1) was the first film I worked on. I was in the film industry around 20 years.
I finally "escaped" from LA in 1998, moving to San Diego.

I've said for years that I would've enjoyed being born around 1950. LC would've been a great place to have been aged 20 in 1970.

I think it was the sense of freedom that drew all the artists to these meccas. I lived on Happy Trail in Topanga. The LA Times used to give away plots of land in TC with a subscription.

It was everywhere after the Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and it lasted from 1964 to 1971 everyday and every night excitement that you could cut with a knife!It inspired yours truly to become a guitarist even in the shithole town of Lynchburg,Va.!

That's the way it was in Mount Adams Cincinnati where I grew up in the 60s and 70s the same way of life I'm 60 now. I road the racer with the Partridge Family at kings Island in 1971 David Cassidy said I had a good Barber I was 11 at the time and I maid my Barber cut my hair just like his I would take the teen IDOL MAGAZINE TO THE BARBER SHOP. I BECAME A Barber AT 19 in 1981 till 2015. Thank you for the memories of bell bottoms, silk shirts with large colors faded blue jeans walking bear foot earth shows frisbee toss a snake on a leash strawberry rolling papers with a built in roach clip and psychedelic paintings and beads in door ways and incense and a lot of love from one another.

What's changed since those magical days? Well, it was easier to earn a living, the dollar went a lot further, hence things were a lot more relaxed... The no fun police (lawyers) controlled things but there weren't as many of them hiding behind every bush...
Today, people determine their net worth by how much funny money they possess, but back then it was more about the creative aspect and the content of ones character that determined social status.
This brings back memories.. I used to listen to Elliott's talk radio after I get off of playing music. Very very interesting man Nice interview! Peace and love

Did you know Alan Watts? He was always on KPFK. Very much changed our consciousness . I was 17 when I saw the Doors in 1968 at the Forum. Want one of my favorite night. Yes I am a native. I used to drive through the Laurel Canyon with the top down, all the trees.

Joni Mitchell's next-door neighbor was Canned Heat's, Bob 'The Bear' Hite. Bob's house caught fire and burned down. Steppenwolf did a photo shoot for their upcoming 3rd album, 'At your Birthday Party,' at Bob's burned-out house that became the albums cover photo.
I have never known anyone with such a beautiful, soothing voice. What a lovely, calm, spiritual bloke Elliot is. I'd love to share a bottle of Chardonnay and a good old chinwag with him.

Grew up in Laurel Canyon... "1962- 1974... Went to Wonderland Avenue School... Could tell you a lot of stories, however Wonderland Avenue was not a good place to get a education at that time... Green Valley Road

Elliot I’m curious if you ever came across Jim Morrison and if so what is your recollection of the great man? I know you mention him in this interview but there was no further elaboration?
You speak so poetically and precise about “those times”. You do it with such soothing, dulcet times, in such a vivid technicolour that you transport the listener to the canyon. You were a great mediator between the artist and the public, a kind of kindred spiritual conduit that bridged that gap. As a Liverpudlian anyone who John Lennon trusted and respected is a top man in my book.

i never met jim. but remember being at the 'whisky-a-go-go' the first night 'the doors' performed. it was obvious to all that they were witnessing what would become one of the most extraordinary bands in the history of rock.

I want to say that you’re interviews with John Lennon always move me. A lot of your hour length audio interview are awesome.
I love the interview on the beach were you ask John Lennon “will the Beatles ever get back together?”. He seemed so optimistic, happy and full of joy. The world lost a “great light” the day his soul left this mortal coil but his spirit and his legacy will last forever into eternity.
I love your channel and in particular your measured style. Classy, refined and cool. I’m still relatively young but I so long for the time when “music was real”. The 60’s/70’s and the Laurel Canyon scene was sadly before my own time. So many wonderful, eclectic artists.
Even journalism rarely raises its head above gutter level. The likes of yourself elevated it to an art form but I feel it no longer has the same gravitas or power. Trust me I’m not being negative it’s just how “I see it”.
It’s a deluded generation that seeks fame for fames sake, with the idea of talent being almost a secondary thought!!? I know there’s still quality out there in all forms of art, music, theatre, film etc…you just have to dig a little deeper to find it.

Elliot Mintz do you remember what year the big tree fell down across Lookout Mnt. Rd. From the Log House? I know it was late 60s, I was living in the house the night it fell and crashed the tree house to the ground. Also, do you remember Nancy Segura from later years in Point Dume, she worked for Dylan. Sometime in the late 70s. I really enjoyed this interview, thank you.

Something that was always on my mind... There was a band that would rehearse all the time on Wonderland... on the corner of Wonderland right by the school... Who was that?
I remember hearing the music too! Like daily. The music echoed through the canyon and like you, wasn't sure where it was coming from or who it was? Closest musicians to our school were Joni Mitchell and the Three Dog Night.
I closed my eyes and heard Carl Sagan speaking about Laurel Canyon …
had the pleasure in 1969 to live in LA and part of that in Laurel Canyon, it was georgoous, , hanging off the side of a mt....stoner musicians ev where...….and then manson happened in the summer. ev thing stopped.

Question......I can't help but wonder; if Laurel Canyon was such a magical place ( once these musicians ) started making " money" why did they move away rather then stay and just upgrade their their living situation with a bigger house, more expensive car, etc if that's what they were looking to do.

Many went on to Haight Ashbury but it only stayed community like Laurel Canyon for about 1 year and then people moved out to Marin and Sonoma seeing each other and sharing holidays and of course concerts but now there were locks on the doors.
What is laurel canyon like now, at least the way it looks? Are the old houses still there, or have they been demolished and replaced? What was the main architectural style of the old neighborhood houses?
janets9179 Frank Zappa's house was sold recently and was one of the party houses where a lot of the beautiful people hung out.

I went to the school of performing arts was told I would be a grate actor I had dyslexia but I could memorize everybody's lines in the play. long blond hire blue eyes 5-8 140 . But I was in the wrong city. Cincinnati Oh. Now all the rich yuppies live there now nothing is the same nothing. It over looks Oh river and the city of Cincinnati I still live in Cincinnati.

I remember "Hippies" and Motown were not the same people at that time. Kent state, hard drugs, and the giving up of the dream, was a sad day, and I still yearn for that dream. And I will not give up. But what keeps me going is that I know that what is coming supercedes even those days.
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth:...And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
