  • Hosts Donald O'Connor and Fredric March open the 26th Academy Awards in 1954, with an introduction by Academy President Charles Brackett. Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Wilding present Oscars® to Walt Disney for Documentary (Short Subject) for "The Alaskan Eskimo" and Documentary (Feature Film) for "The Living Desert." Jack Webb presents the Oscar® for Sound Recording to the Columbia Studio Sound Department (John P. Livadary, Sound Director) for "From Here to Eternity." Also, watch for a young Betty White singing for Oldsmobile.

    The only film footage I've ever seen of Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Wilding together when they were married. What a gorgeous couple!

      @@suzettebennett9112 Thank you for correcting me. I genuinely try to ensure that I spell the names of people correctly. As an ex teacher, I would always take care when spelling first names as they can be a ‘minefield.’ For instance, my daughter’s name is Kathryn, but as we all know to our cost, there are several different spellings of the name. The example which I will cite here is Katharine Hepburn. Be well.

    When I heard the announcer said Hong Kong after those big cities as New York, London, Paris, Rio, I am so proud, since Hong Kong is line up with those big cities in 50s! It's marvelous!

    Wow! Over 60 years, Betty's voice is almost exactly the same. That's what happens for living a healthy life with no smoking or drinking.

      I know I wouldn't be alive now but I sure wished I had been born earlier or before
      WWII. I would have loved being a part of this generation because they had a lot of class and were more humble and kind to each other. They also worked their
      ass-off compared to this generation we have now.

    And to think that Andrew Preview was only in his mid-20s when he was the Musical Director at the Oscars that year.
    (For those who didn't get the deliberate misspelling of his name, this was from his appearance on _The Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show_ (of 1971).)

    I just Lena Horne and husband Lennie Hayton. I wonder how many times she came out for these awards. I saw her with Quincy Jones in 1995. Look for more.

    I watched this on the TV in 1954. I love the lack of bombast and pretension! The awards are presented, a simple thank you, no muss no fuss. Everyone is dressed to the nines; no underwear showing; no weird cutouts in the dresses; speeches short and sweet. They may not have always behaved like ladies and gentlemen in their private lives, but on stage on this night they definitely behaved like grown ups!

    That's crazy by 1954 half of the households in America had TV sets .... I wonder how many households in America now have no cable TV whatsoever... and if they'll lie about that number... more and more people are getting rid of cable .

    The Alaskan Eskimo, The Living Desert has great writing and From Here to Eternity has great sound mixing.

    Betty White so young, I don't think Donald O'Connor was invited back as MC. Michael Wilding was Elizabeth Taylor's second husband and the father of her two sons.

    Oscars Before the Academy Awards were televised, were they still recorded on film? Or are photographs and audio the only souvenirs left from the early shows?

      Small portions of earlier shows were shot on film by newsreel cameras, mainly acting winners. Mostly the audio of radio broadcasts is all that exists, along with photos.

    I would so rather listen to Fredric March than smart-a**-sounding Donald O'Connor. Tuned in just to hear Fredric March💓, & it was over 9 minutes in, before he was finally shown. A greatly talented actor; handsome, witty and charming!👍🖒👏👏👏👏👏💘❣

    LOLOL I thought it was a parody of the Academy Awards. Paul Douglas and Betty White doing the Oldsmobile commercial were hysterical it was so bad. The only thing missing was Justin Bieber. Frederick March the host from New York, seriously? Ps. The only thing real was Elizabeth Taylor who was beautiful even in black and white.

    Was that Raymond Burr's voice in the opening? The comic banter was - well, you know what it was. And the commercials were not raunchy then and about as interesting as they are now. They get right down to business, Walt Disney is a reticent kind of guy. Too bad he wasn't so reticent in his politics. These days you can't shut them up. Now, onto next year.
