As a LEO I can confirm these officers were being lazy attempting to talk the ride share driver out of pressing charges. Plain and simple laziness. And he’s more than welcome to continue his job so he doesn’t lose money and return to give his full statement later. This department needs to get buttoned up.

Same. Not to be that person, but if they don't see consequences the first time, it's probably not the last time it's going to happen. You could even argue that it's an act of consideration to press charges against idiots like this because you're trying to help prevent it from happening to anyone else in the future.

Let's take this one step further. If someone were to kick my car and damage it, I'd press charges specifically for the police report number. I'd take the car to a dealership to get it fixed, even if it costs me far more than an aftermarket shop would. Go ahead and pay to get it fixed, get the receipt, go to the local state crime victim's compensation fund, and file for reimbursement. Why? Because the perp then gets saddled with the extra order for restitution that sticks for 20 years, except instead of me having to pursue it privately, the state fund pursues it with far more resources and tenacity than I have.

As a retired LEO - this officer really pisses me off. If I was his supervisor and saw this video, he would be immediately reprimanded. It is not an officer's job to talk the victim out of pressing charges. If a crime has been committed, the job of the officer is to take witness statements and verify damage. Conducting a valuation of the damage and suggesting its only $25 worth is inappropriate; further, if a wiper was yanked off with any kind of force - there is no telling the potential damage to the actual mechanism of the wiper and its wiring. This is why you conduct your investigation, gather all the information of parties involved, and then file charges upon completion of the investigation when the paperwork of actual cost of repair returns. At the end of it - there is a difference between criminal mischief and criminal damage to private property.

Years ago my wife and I were visiting her family in another state. Guy pulled out infront of us and I was unable to completely avoid hitting him. The at fault driver had no license, and no insurance. He was allowed to drive away from the scene. One officer doing the crash report told me that my damage was minor and I should be able to drive away. I had a feeling it was worst due to the camber on the drivers front wheel. While he was still there I crawled under to inspect and the lower control arm was snapped in half.

Exactly. Maybe it was just the wiper, in which case, yeah, I would just replace it rather than deal with any process I have to go through to press charges or get paid. But that cop isn't a car mechanic, he doesn't know if it's just the wiper. If she damaged the mechanism or whatever, that could be over a thousand dollars to replace with parts and labor.

Bro literally even a LAWYER cant tell you what to do legally. They can only give you advice. You have to make the decisions yourself.
You can defer to them obviously but a lawyer legally cannot make a decision for you or sway your decision a certain way. They can only give you the facts and the choices. They can tell you what THEY would do but ultimately the decision is up to you. They can tell you "this is a good deal" and "doing this would be stupid" but they cant say "you have to do this" or "you shouldnt do this".
I know it seems like a fine line but it's extremely important legal precedent.

@@pauljordan4452 Assuming the motor has to be replaced, obviously depending on the extent of the damage, since it was the back door/lid, in most cases you have to remove the interior panel to access anything electrical. There is the time to diagnose the issue/extent of the damage, the time to remove what's necessary to be able to diagnose the issues, and the time to actually repair/replace the damage components.
Keep in mind that a lot of shops charge labor by the hour, anywhere from $125 to $250. The time put into the car to do all the diagnostics, the time it takes to do all the necessary repairs, the cost of parts on top of the labor time, doing such a job could easily cost $500.
Just to throw out there, most fail to recognize that the labor hours are largely determined by what the manufacturers say. So if the job takes 2 hours to do and a tech gets it done in 1 hour, you're still being charged for 2 hours. A tech's experience and ability to beat the book time won't reduce a customers total bill.

A broken rear wiper is a lot more than $25. The motor could be broken, the actual housing itself is a hundred bucks. The labor to have it fixed is probably about a hundred bucks, too. His car's value is decreased because of it. His car in the shop to have it fixed is at least a day he can't work. This "only $25" could easily wind up costing him close to a grand. And even if it were really JUST $25, why should the driver have to absorb that? He was providing a service to her and she smashed up his car. That's not his problem. I’m sorry, bike cop assessed the wiper being ripped off as only $25? Maybe for JUST the wiper, not the damaged arm or motor.. kinda scummy bike cop was trying to pressure the driver to just eat the cost because he didn’t want to follow through with his job. I’m normally a fan of how the cops conduct themselves in videos on this channel but the cop in this one was not very good

    • @Tototoron

I looked it up, it ranges from $90-$225 for a new wiper motor, an estimated hour for labor, and anywhere between $10-$40 for new wiper. The bike cop downplaying the cost and trying to talk the guy out of pressing charges is terrible police work

Officer Soup Sandwich wants to get paid for doing literally nothing. It's a good thing the victim told him his partner was rolling around in the middle of the street with the suspect. It's not his job to determine damage, to someone else's property. Wiper blades, like everything, are expensive. If the armature and motor were damaged, it could be a couple hundred bucks easy. Poor conduct on the officers part.
