But I when I heard "cause all I really wants to be with you" I felt like she was making me hear that line, so i knew she was with me. Sorry for your lost, I first saw Gin Blossoms video "Hey Jealousy" at The Levis Store thirty one years ago. I brought their CD a year later great memories, I hope that their song continue to give you happy memories with your mother as it gave me happy memories of my early twenties.
I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my mom almost two years ago. She loved old Italian religious songs. And for a while I couldn't listen to them, without feeling like my soul was being tortured. But at least our moms are with God now.

I am not sure about criminally underrated. Back in the 90's they were constantly played in the radios & parties that everyone enjoyed. Too bad music of today is crap.
I think about this song more than I should. It’s not a cry for help, it’s a scream. He’s already lost. And he’s living after the credits stopped rolling. “ if I hadn’t blown the whole thing years ago, I’d still be her with you...” no one ever shows what happens to the guys that lose the girl. Lose the war. Lose themselves after the movie ends and the lights go up. This is the last cry, not for help, but for one last good bye before he goes his way forever. Sad. Beautiful. Real.
It’s a good quote because of the contradiction where you can’t appreciate things at the time the way you do when you’re nostalgic for them. It is the perspective of nostalgia that makes it impossible to have that same appreciation at the time.
God this song hits me hard. "All I really want is to be with you, feel like I matter too" "If you don't expect too much from me, you might not be let down." As someone who has struggled with depression and low self esteem most of my life, it's crazy how much I relate to that. This song is always one of the first I play if I'm feeling down, helps me out in a cathartic way. We all need songs like that.
1999, I was 13 and I heard it on the radio. You couldn't google lyrics back then, so I called the radio station to ask what the band was called. I thought the DJ said "Jim Possums" 🤷 but fortunately the record store guy knew what I was talking about.
"You can trust me not to beg, and not to sleep around,....and if you don't expect too much from me, you might not be let down." (Perhaps one of the finest lyrics ever written)
TheNewAmericanMedia Absolutely. My favorite is "Your boyfriend's over...I watch your light go out" from "Found Out About You." That gift of understatement in his lyrics, and it WAS a gift.
+TheNewAmericanMedia I always thought it was "you can trust me not to think" - as you know he was an impulsive ex-boyfriend who did stupid things hence the reason they're broken up - and he's sayiing 'yeah I'm predictable in that respect - you can trust that I'll do stupid things...but I also won't sleep around and if you don't expect too much - you might just be satisfied with me.'
+nativesun It was originally "You can trust me not to drink" because Hopkins had a very visible alcohol problem all through the band's timeline. The use of "trust me not to drink" would have been grossly ironic because it's obviously something Hopkins would pay lip service to, but not adhere. It further didn't make any sense to use "drink" over "think" as the song itself starts off very early with "and I'm in no shape for drivin'" suggesting to say "you can trust me not to drink" is nothing more than, well, drunk talk.
“If I hadn’t blown the whole thing years ago, I might be here with you/I might not be alone” is the line(s) that gets me every time I listen to this song. Just gets me in my feels. Great song.
When you read the backstory of the songwriter getting kicked out of the band before they made it big and eventually killing himself having watched his ex-band mates achieve fame playing his songs, well....
@@cookslooking10 So. . . would it have been better if his songs had gotten deep sixed WITH him? Self destructive people can't be redeemed if they don't make the decision themselves. His band members gave him every opportunity. His lyrics live on through them.
“If you don’t expect too much from me, you might not be let down” What a fantastic lyric. Everyone can say they’ve felt like that at some point or another with someone. If you don’t want much out of me, then maybe I’ll meet your standards.
I don't think so. For a man to tell you to not expect much from him means he's a low life and will continue to treat you badly, but it's okay so long as you continue to have low expectations.
Yeah! I got a disposable THC vape. The strain is “Jealousy”. It malfunctioned, so I cracked it open and smeared the oil on a cigarette. Yo homie, I’m high as a giraffe’s ass. Godspeed to you and yours
lol the only reason I’m here. It’s not exactly the style I listen to, nothing reminded me of it, I just wanted to go back to my grandma’s house in 1993 for a few minutes
Maybe why I, an 80s baby 90s kid, was so ill prepared for life 😅 but I still think the 90s was the best decade, for music, fashion and lack of technology 🥰!
I was born in '75. Truly blessed. Old enough to love the '80s...young enough to love the '90s as well. Jams like this are just legendary and bring you back to an easier time.
Me too bro, i grew un with the awesome hard and heavy bands from 80s(motley, def leppard, Dokken, Ratt, etc) but, i think that we had a good rock band's on 90s
75 as well!! So nice to connect with people who were 18 when this came out. Stepping into adulthood, but still incredibly young, naive, hopeful but lost and scared. This song like so many other songs of that time was so upbeat that you think it’s about something happy. But in this case it’s about heartbreak and trying to move on from a big loss or f**king up a big piece of your life (which I did around this time).
@@lookatmepleasesirtoo bad if you missed it. People were a lot nicer. Music was great and colors and nightlife were fun. This shit for brains culture is a waste of oxygen. He's praying for another pandemic that does its job better 😂
I´m also 45. I used to hear this music when I was attending to the university, studying architecture. My girlfriend Maria and me used to hear this music when going to Patanemo beach in Venezuela :-). We split soon after, but we are still friends. That was a mix tape which contained Pearl Jam, U2, Gin Blossoms, Cranberries, Radiohead, Nirvana, 4non blonds and other i cant remember. People die. Love dies. Life is only stories we use to create our world which is only experiences and memory.
At the rollerskating with my first girlfriend at summer camp, tearing it up on DDR in the arcade and just feeling this song. First time hearing this song at least 15 years later. I feel alive again
I saw them in concert here in Dallas right before covid. By far one of the best bands to see live. The singer still sounds great and was so interactive with the crowd. If you ever get the chance to go see them it's definitely worth it.
There is always something about this song, that really hits you, especially those who lived in the 90's. Thank God I was able to experience and feel this kind of music during my teens.
I had just broken up with the love of my life when this song came on the radio while I was driving in 1993. It was the first time I'd heard it and by the middle of the song I was crying my eyes out and had to pull over. I moved on like normal people do but every time I hear this song I'm in that car. Awesome song.
before my uncle passed away, when he was around 17-19 years old, he sat in the front row of one of their concerts and they flicked him a guitar pick that was autographed. my dad gave me the pick and I still have it. it is one of my most prized possessions. he was also a drummer in a band called, D.U.M.B. and I have one of the songs he wrote. I am going to have my band publish it in his honor.
This song makes me think of my husband. We would listen to this song driving over 100 going to Dallas. Cancer took him almost two years ago. The song makes me smile. Cant wait to hear your band play your uncles song.
Hard to believe it's been over 30 years since this band hit the scene. I was 22 and just out of college when this was released. What good times we had. This song was part of the soundtrack to our lives back then. RIP Doug Hopkins.
This one will always remind me of my first girlfriend. Her family just moved one day, wasn't told or got to say goodbye, I hope she is having the time of her life. 90s Never Die.
I never appreciated this song when I was younger... now it is a bittersweet reminder of good times and lost opportunities... you gotta take the good with the bad, but either way you look at it this song takes me back!
I've always loved this band and how they kept going after Doug Hopkins sadly passed - such a great visionary songwriter. His songs on New Miserable Experience were exceptional. In fact I love the whole album, one of the few albums in my collection I love from start to finish. This is a tune!!!
It almost feels like Doug Hopkins (R.I.P.) was spying on me and taking notes when he wrote this song's lyrics......................hell, he probably wrote this entire album while doing that!
When the Gin Blossoms were popular, they seemed like an okay band. Now that I look back and listen they were an awesome band and 1000x's better than todays music.
I thought they were a poser pop bank in the 90's. One of my favorite bands of all time now. Perspective. I'd go back to 96 in the snap of a finger if I could
What’s crazy is in the 90s, they were just an okay band, but here we are over two decades later and we realize how even “average” bands like the Gin Blossoms are far superior to what we have now, just like you said
The "music" of today is written by 2 guys and it follows a pattern/algorithm . From Taylor Smith to Bieber they do not write their own songs. Music today is a joke
+EQOAnostalgia No, everything was better. No iphones. No autotune. The music was real, people were real. We used to hang out and listen to records, watch music videos, walk around all over town. We had to call each other at home, and once we met up nobody sat around staring at a phone. And we dressed so much cooler.
+EQOAnostalgia If this is nostalgia, then sign me up! It's certainly better than what passes for music today. I'm in my 40's and I grew up listening to some great music! My parents were hippies who went to Monterey Pop in '67, saw Hendrix numerous times, and I was 2 months from being born when my they went to Woodstock. The 60's , 70's , and 80's music was a great time, but after about 94 I think the music scene took a big shit. I would rather listen to the dreaded "disco" music of the 70's than pop, rap or hip-hop! If I was a teenager today, I would probably be another tragic suburban white kid driving his parents BMW who thinks he's from the ghetto. And the tattoo craze has gone mental. Nothing like a temporarily good idea that lasts forever! As Bill Maher said "She might be the girl with the dragon tattoo today, but in the future she will be the old lady with the tattoo that's draggin'.
+EQOAnostalgia It's nostalgia most likely if we ignore all these other enthusiastic kinda misguided responses and look at it realistically. This is a bit before my time, when this came out I was a very little kid. But I've caught myself romanticizing my teenage years in every aspect and then I stopped and thought about it...I didn't love that time at all and couldn't wait for it to end. I'm not saying you didn't possibly love yours. But the fact is, that's what people love to do. Look at their times past with rose colored glasses and remember it better than it was. That's why everyone believes that literally everything was better when they were young or they wish they were born earlier...cause it's always something else that was "better back then". And then they whine about how there's no good music today even though we're overflowing with amazing bands and singers and we can access their music easier than ever. We're seriously drowning in all the good music we can access today. You can find it without even making a huge effort, that's how easy it is. Bands get fans thanks to the internet, they don't even have to be on tv. Teenagers today will reminisce about how music from their generation was "real music, unlike this crap today." Circle of life. This is just good music, no matter what year.
One of the deepest songs ever. This singer is singing about regret. He passed up what went well for him, but thought there was a better route. But there was no better option. He sings "hey jealousy" cause he is jealous of what of the fact that someone else could have what he could have had. He can't let go. He tries to plead and pleads by making promises, but the best is to not get one's hopes up, because big promises can't be kept. The past is gone but something might be found to take its place, he hopes to replace the foul mistakes he made. He hopes for a something to start.
TRIBUTE: To DOUG HOPKINS, Gin Blossoms & his lyrics/talent to this song- “Hey Jealousy” A melancholy, bittersweet song reminiscent of his life, his love & the band. A mega hit & reminder of his success as he tried to overcome his drinking & discord/wedge with his band members. Unfortunately, he took his own life. We honor & give him credit here: time/talent & treasure - may he R.I.P. Thank you Doug for your many contributions as we listen today - 2022. Loved, not forgotten.
God bless you Doug thank you for your contribution to the collective consciousness. You matter. You didn’t blow the whole thing years ago, you were present and made the music. Thank you

Mid-90s Alternative/Hard Rock here, not hard or heavy enough to be Grunge, but it occupied its very own and important place in a very important decade and era. Great song.
@Troll Mctrollerson Oh God, moron alert. Social Democracies have the highest standards of living. Here in the USA we worry about Socialism while we enjoy the 14th highest standard of living behind 12 Socialist Democracies and Australia.
Why does this song makes me cry... 😢 I guess it's the nostalgia. It's like living through faded memories that replay an intangible reality. Makes me feel like it never really happened...
My freshman year of high school was 2000, my whole childhood before that was this amazing, beautiful, under appreciated decade of music. Love love love this band.
Take me with you. I don't have any money but one should not time travel alone. To bad I didn't know then that those would be the best years of my life. Being a responsible adult sucks.
I am, presumably, much older than you. Stop being too responsible. ;-) Drive to New York for a hotdog and a pizza. Drive back home the slow way - make a week of it.
Life seemed so much more full of promise before September 11, 2001. Since then it has been war, hate and bitterness, and plague. Respect each other and treat people with dignity and respect. Don’t let the haters drag you down. Peace to all!
I agree! My brothers went to war because of 9/11 they're not the same...lots of PTSD. Seen things kids (because they were only 18 they were still kids) shouldn't have seen. Its a disconnect from the world. We lost our bond. They no longer have a spark and faith in people. Mom and I pray for them to find the happiness but it's tough. My brother is having twins next year so I'm praying that will bring life back into him. The other one has since drowned himself into work. Has 3 kids numbs himself from all the hate and diversity. So sad but im hopeful. This world still has time to change! Always look for the one good thing it will bring you back to life and let love flow in!
Lack of promise has nothing to do with this song or any music for that matter. Enjoy the music when you hear it and apply the lyrics according to what they were written for and you’ll always get more out of it. 09-11-2001 was not the initial turning point in the USA as the event itself was somewhat inevitable. The world the USA once knew changed shortly following the death of JFK and has been a roller coaster for most in it since. Those thinking the world changed after 09-11 actually was simply awakened to the highs and lows of life.
For this 90s kid, especially one who liked radio rock (mostly because I couldn't afford CDs yet) this was one of my favorite bands growing up. Who else has a cassette tape of this song recorded off the radio somewhere?
I had a lot of cassettes of songs I taped from radio. I listened to alternative, indie, lo-fi. Trying to get it recorded the moment the song began. There was a local station that played concerts and it was great to get classic rock stuff like that...Zeppelin, pink Floyd, etc. The cassettes were time capsules.
Love this era of music. No one gave a shit about us. So we hung out in some of the most mundane places and made it the centre of the universe with our music.
This song describes every single person born between 80 and 86 coming of age right at the end of the 90s. This describes our love lifes and general lives as far as what we spent our nights doing. And i wouldnt trade a bit of it for anything because all those self loathing, questioning life, the universe and everything while driving around with friends and your girl made me what i am today.
The older I get, the harder it is to reconnect with that feeling of blissful happiness that came with being a kid.
But a song can open that door for just a second and fill my heart with a gust of happiness I thought long gone. Even if it’s only for a moment, sometimes a moment is all you need.

Such a simple song, only a few chords, but, MAN, that driving beat and lyrics make it utterly perfect. 90’s music was fantastic.
A sound that'll never be re-created. So glad to have been part of that era
Don't we miss the 90's so much!
To us wanting to go back to 90s. This song has something to say to us. " The past is gone but something might be found to take its place "

I doubt it. Sounds pessimistic but the music we have today... I don't even know where to begin.

First, it's 2021 and this song still kicks ass. Second, the older I get the more the bass line just fucking grooves... Such a talented band.
The song may kick ass but the year hasn’t

Yes it dose and it would fit a Sitcom from the 90s and play it in the show when they are on a Date or something funny
Sad. Look up the dude that wrote all the hits.

"I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you've left them." Andy Bernard
Wise words 🙏
It’s a good quote because of the contradiction where you can’t appreciate things at the time the way you do when you’re nostalgic for them. It is the perspective of nostalgia that makes it impossible to have that same appreciation at the time.
So very true! I feel you!

You think he was trying to say Gin Blossoms? It's wrong, but an actual band from the time
Funny. I misunderstand dong titles too
This song and video made me absolutely fall completely in love with the Gin Blossoms in '93. RIP Doug Hopkins.
I had an album called Now 93, and the song was on it!
"You can trust me not to beg, and not to sleep around,....and if you don't expect too much from me, you might not be let down."
(Perhaps one of the finest lyrics ever written)

@@cookslooking10 well that's a whole other story. I find a different meaning in those words.
"If you don't expect too much from me you might not be let down" is another powerful sentence.

When the Gin Blossoms were popular, they seemed like an okay band. Now that I look back and listen they were an awesome band and 1000x's better than todays music.
Oh! That’s nothing new. The music today I don’t know what to make of it?
I thought they were a poser pop bank in the 90's. One of my favorite bands of all time now. Perspective. I'd go back to 96 in the snap of a finger if I could
What’s crazy is in the 90s, they were just an okay band, but here we are over two decades later and we realize how even “average” bands like the Gin Blossoms are far superior to what we have now, just like you said
The "music" of today is written by 2 guys and it follows a pattern/algorithm . From Taylor Smith to Bieber they do not write their own songs. Music today is a joke
I always knew they were above average, but I\m from the 70s and had older siblings...I got to know GOOD. My kids are pleased about that. Peace
Is it just nostalgia or was everything much more vibrant and amazing back then?
Not nostalgia... The 90's were like the 80's but with mentos the freshmaker
+EQOAnostalgia agreed
We need to get this to 1 billion views 😅 my favorite album of all time. This my favorite song.

This is very wrong.

The 90's were really the last great decade. The music is still relevant today.
exactly. i haven't tuned into the radio since the turn of the century...and i've been in Cover Bands and part-time musician since the 70's.
From an older fan who nows how hard rock hits, this is great stuff. The "new" classics.
