  • In this episode, we look at the difference in flight time between the original DJI Mavic Mini and the newly released DJI Mini 2.
    We charged up the batteries to 100% and headed over to our flying field to test autonomy on a pretty windy day.
    Find out if the claimed 30 minutes for the Mini and 31 minutes for the Mini 2 are actually achievable.

    Thanks you for this video! Actual (vs spec) flight time is a really important decision criteria for me so this video is really much appreciated!!!!
    I guess it makes since that the DJI would make the Mini 2's forced landing at 10% vs 5% for the Mini v1 (that uses LiIon battery) given that the battery in the Mini 2 is a LiPo battery (and is more easily damaged when voltage goes to low levels. And additionally the Mini 2 LiPo battery is a High Voltage (HV) Lipo battery...as HV Lipo batteries voltage levels typically fall off more quickly once the voltage level reaches a certain threshold when compared to regular LiPo batteries.
    I do wish vendors would just standardize the battery specs based on hover time as that is something that is typically significantly lower than what they use to rate the flight times (and therefore closer to reality of what you will get in real life) and also a hover time is something a consumer can test themselves....gotta keep these manufacturers "honest" and prevent flight time spec inflation.
    Do you happen to have a similar hover for the MA 2. There are others who have a hover test at sea level but not at 5K altitude. It would be interesting to understand what the effect is of flying at 5K altitude vs sea level.
    Cheers

      I plan to do a MA2 test. I only have one battery for it and I used it to get some 4K comparative footage yesterday so I'll have to go back with a full battery to try it. It's super windy today so I may take the M2 and M1 out to see if I can reach the limit on either.
      I'll test MA2 vs M2 and if I can find a third pilot I'll add the M1 to the list again.

      And yes, I agree the battery numbers should be standardized to hover.

      @@PilotInstitute Perforect...Looking forward to that whenever you can get it. If it's super windy it may make sense to just wait as the wind could have a significant impact on the results. PS...it's super windy here in San Diego as well.

    Nice comparison! I sold my Mavic Mini and bought the Mini 2. I just did a hover test this morning in windy conditions at lower elevation and got 25.35 minutes the drone auto-landed. The battery was taken straight off of the charger and put into the drone. The test was done immediately without delay. I think it started at 99%. I was also capturing video at 1080 30 FPS.
    During the test my phone feed also showed the bizarre artifacts. That started about 8 minutes prior to the landing. The SD card video was ok.

    • @PilotInstitute
      @PilotInstitute  3 года назад

      Very interesting. Thank you for sharing. The artifact is indeed bizarre. I'm guessing the lower flight time was due to recording at the same time. We didn't record during our test (only recorded the phone screen).

    How does the old batteries on the Mini 2 compare to the new batteries for flight time since the old one is slightly bigger (2400mha vs 2250) and also does the old battery weigh more than the new ones and put it over the 249g weight?

    • @MysticGrower
      @MysticGrower 3 года назад +1

    Wouldn’t the Lipo Batteries in the mini 2 be damaged if they are Discharged below 30%? that’s the case on on my other RC stuff, maybe that’s the reason for the earlier forced landing Warning on the mini 2 . Great vids Greg, can’t wait for deep dive course.

      I actually wasn't recording from the card. I had formatted it the morning of. It seems to be a downlink issue when the image is the same for an extended period of time. I flew it around quite a bit and didn't see it happening any other time. Weird.

    Air density has no bearing on battery life. You’re thinking of combustion engines…

    • @PilotInstitute
      @PilotInstitute  Год назад

      Thinner air, less efficient propeller, requires more RPM for similar performance at sea level, hence lower battery life.
