@@patrickcooperstockfootage1185 yea but they did this to make you wanna buy a mini 2 the mini 2 was in the works along side the mini 1.. they havent been working on this drone a few months after.. what they did was said how can we get more money and screw over the customer lets offer another drone with the same stuff on it just give them a remote and put a number 2 on it and a 4k on the camera that oviously has the sensor capable of actually shooting 4k and occusyn built in but disabled...
folks weve been duped this is how dji operates.. they did it with the naza controlers way back when they messed up on the firmware said hey we fixed it but you have to buy this new one at 100 more... when a hacker came around found out they just changed the code and he gave the code for free... then comes the phantom line the only line worthy of 4 k and worthy of occusyne and true diversity antennas etc.. then thewy said oh no one can afford them we need more profittttttttttttts morereee profits so they made the spark it sucked range suffered they called it enhanced wifi lol nothing enhanced just a name the transmitters got hot the drone got hot why 1 watt of power the transmitter put out almost 1 wqatt on the drone why they knew when they made it it would suck how do you compinsate you increase dbi and watts or just watts.. then came the air.. it sucked same bs then the air 2 better finally...alittle better fss hopping... then came the mavic pro.. etc now with the mini.. folks the only line to use true good high quality 4k sensors was the phantom 3 pro and 4 models they used good chips actual hardwear for the diversity and fss hopping after phantom they said fuck it lets use a off the shelf wifi chip and just add code...
btw my spektrum dx8 uses fss hopping its from 2012 and and get this it didnt have it before they just added code to the arm processor or arduinno chip[ to say hay do this and voila ... so this new mini all they did was take a mini off the shelf stick stickers on it grab a transmitter put in some code and some bs lines its better it goes 10k psst it dont... i saw 3 miles max... first to have any good system you need to hope freq you need diversity antennas.. the video must be on 2 channels and be rock solid yopu must have antennas on the transmitter that are bigger and more power..
if you want range add a 2 watt powered wifi booster to your transmitter owith a external lipo pack.. it will only garantee you transmitt it wont garantee yoru video breaks up from the drone the drone is wayyy to small to add a 1 watt transmitter on it for the video..
and no ones decoded the signal yet in fact no ones be able to get to the main code to see whats really on these things.. why i dont know geohotz gave us the ps3 broke the code i wish he came on the case and really opened it up.. as it stands.. you can pay 25 bnucks to some hacking site i did to get 1.5-1.8 wsatts outta your transmitter i dont kno if its true i paid them to try it out their software said it was enabled... proof i dunno no way to prove it unless i get a watt meter i guess those little ones that have antennas that detect freq and watts... but really you want range and 4k get a action cam a good one a really good one strap it to a mavic pro or phantom line phantoms for the weight carrying and then do that you can add any transmitter... and use some fat sharks with that... dji has really screwed us over

So as soon as the mini 2 came out, the going price for a lightly used mini fell substantially. You can get a mini with the flymore extras for 300 or less. I myself (as a non-professional) can't see a meaningful difference in the photo quality. IMO, in nearly all cases this isn't worth the upgrade.

  • @andropad3015
    @andropad3015 4 года назад +5

thanks for sharing ... I'm an owner of the first iteration of the mini and viewing the videos and photos you've uploaded I really don't think the changes are wrenching enough to justify the 2. The video is of course better but not amazingly better and yes the flight performance will also be better. And whilst the flight time and performance is improved its sill effected by the wind having a light profile. The better upgrade for owners of the mini is to go from the 1 to the Air 2 which does have a larger sensor and for both still and video photography and better flight dynamics.

I have the mini 1 and have been thinking about upgrading to the mini 2. I use the mini for casual use, the "drone in the bag" in case it is needed. If I have a gig or have pro work, there are other drones I can bring. I wish they did 4K 60fps or at least change the sensor. For the most part, you can still live with 1080 or 2K res. As Billy mentioned, the quality is similar. The only thing holding me back is the remote for the mini. It is functional and great, however it defeats the whole "mini" thing. The new controller is bigger than the mini, the original one is more compact/portable. I appreciate the review and Billy did a good job with his points.
For now, I wIll wait for the Mini 3

I had a Mini1 for two months and sold it. I've had the Mini2 for a week and its jaw dropping how much better it is for $100 Canadian. Connectivity is flawless. Power is shocking. It plows through wind. Sound is half as loud and apparently due to harder plastic. As for the camera, I haven't noticed a huge difference but I also haven't done a lot of editing in a week. I disagree with the idea that it was definitively artificial limiting of the hardware. Is it possible DJI limited the first Mini to 2k so that people would buy the Mini 2? Yes, it's possible. But it's also possible the first Mini had a slower mobile processor and didn't have the horsepower to process 4k video. The Mini 2 likely has a processor upgrade that they don't advertise because who really cares.
If you could unlock the 4k capabilities and force the software to record in 4k I'd be the whole drone would choke up. It'd probably interfere with some core processes too, or simply skip frames and be below 30 FPS.
Or ya know...maybe he's right and it is all artificial limiting. Apple does it with their phones after all. Tesla with their cars. It's a common, sleezy practice.

One year later I'm watching this as a potential first drone buyer in Australia and I have choices of a DJI refurbished Mini for $339 as the cheap option , refurb Mini 2 for 629 , brand new Mini 2 Fly More Combo for $949 ( three batteries and all the spares ) or a DJI Mavic Air 2 for $1499 , all in aussie dollars .
Right now I'm leaning to the $949 option , that equates to $699 USD at the current rate of exchange .
I don't want to buy a toy but I don't want to sell the farm to buy a drone either , especially as a novice . Constructive thoughts welcome , thanks .

Speaking as a Canadian, where we have some of the strictest drone regulations and biggest no-fly zones, the big answer to 'why Mini 2 and not Air 2" is that the Mini is 249 grams... which was very intentional on DJI's part. One of the limits in Canada is that 250 gram marker. Drones under 250 grams do not have to be federally registered, and can be flown without requiring the NAV Canada "Basic" operator certificate.
(You obviously still have to follow all of the restrictions like no flight within 100m/300' of developed areas, buildings, houses, parks, no flying over events, traffic, etc., plus altitude and wind speed restrictions, no flight within a radius of any airport or helipad or prison, hospital, government building, etc., and more - but you don't need the certificate, and don't need to register the hardware.)

The software handles the JPEG processing very well, especially bright highlights.

Nice comparison. New video suggestion: can you compare the regulatory, hurdles / requirements of flying the mini-2 vs the Magic Air 2? FAA registration, getting permission to fly in certain spaces etc? Would help new drone users dramatically. Thanks.

Both drones are under 249kg, in the USA and Canada drones 250kg and above are required to be registered and the operator needs a liscense, these drones were specifically made to sort of exploit that rule

    Gday Billy,
At the end you ask "if you've had the mini 1 why wouldn't you upgrade to the Air 2".
I have the mini 1, yes im thinking about upgrading to the mini 2 but now I'm thinking why not wait until the mini 3.
Yes I woukd love to upgrade to a Air 2 or Air 2S, but it's not a question of whether I could, the question us "why, woukd I?".
The mini's have something that none of the other drones in the "Mavic" range have, the mini's have the deal breaker for any other mavic drone. WEIGHT!!, or more precisely lack of weight. Been a sub 250g (.55lb) drone means no one knows where I'm flying it because I don't have to register it.

You have to decide, buddy. It has to be based on YOUR criteria and preferences. What are you looking for? 😀
In my case, I already own a Mavic 2 Pro, and decided to buy the older Mavic Mini instead of the Mini 2 because it checks my criteria.
Why? While I'm a RAW shooter, I prefer the JPEG processing of the Mavic Mini. It protects the highlights more than the Mini 2. Also, its controller is way smaller and the same foldable style as the M2P.
I don't care about the video only being 2.7K and lower bitrate than the Mini 2 because looks-wise, it still looks beautiful and impressive.
From far away, micro-detail and defined textures are not needed, plus watching at 1440p on my smartphone will cancel any sharpness and detail advantages of 4K video, as I've already tested with the M2P and my other 4K cameras.
The entire reason I ordered the Mavic Mini was to not have to worry about specs, but just enjoy it being the little cutey it is and use what it has available.
The fact that I only paid $399.00 (sans tax) on Amazon for the Mavic Mini Fly More Combo is an amazing, smile-inducing deal.
It comes with three batteries, which is an entire hour of combined flight time on a windy day. It also comes with the carrying case and propeller guards, which are needed for when flying indoors.
I paid $1599 (sans tax) for the M2P, and in my experience, average people don't really have a discerning eye to tell their footage apart. That's crazy but true. There's a $1200 difference in price, and much of that is in image quality they just don't notice.
The Mavic Mini Fly More Combo is still $399.00 directly from Amazon. That's $200 less than the Mini 2 Fly More Combo.
If you don't have a 4K display, don't care about the fancier flight modes and better signal strength, and want to save $200, the Mavic Mini doesn't look $200 worse. 😁

About 2 years ago around here you used to see people fly drones all the time, but now I rarely see them. And I think 90% of people don't need more than the Mini 2 even if an Air2 is better. Even the Mavic Pro original- I haven't seen anyone fly those for over a year.

I have a question. So in my country, I can get the Mavic Mini Fly More Combo used like 2 months for around 350 USD. The new Mavic Mini 2 costs almost 600 USD. Tbh I dont think its worth that much more money but you own both drones so can u give an opinion on which to get.
