Awesome someone finally made a good 302 video! been working on my 95 yj 302 swap for 4 years now
Steven Wall is it done 6 years later?
I used a RAM 5.9L in my 4cyl 2000 WRANGLER and it took only 10 days to do. BTW it's emissiond legel too unlike most CHEVY and FORD conversion.
Love it. Sounds like an old Bronco.
I'm surprised I hadn't seen this video earlier when looking through your channel. I did a similar swap on an '87 YJ Wrangler. I put a 31 spline/disk brake/4.10/Ox Lockered 8.8 out back(with a MORE kit), a Curry 44 up front, and finally backed a Mercury Grand Marquis engine with a T-18 'granny low' 4 speed/Atlas II case combo. I went with a 2 barrel carburetor for simplicity and an '85 bronco distributor hooked up to the original Jeep ignition module(Jeep used a Ford ignition module).
On 4" springs, a 1" body lift to clear the trans and 33's it could chirp the tires shifting into 3rd. In 1st gear + low range(over 100:1 crawl ratio) it would idle up just about any hill thanks to the 302's great low end torque. I didn't even use 1st gear on the street.
Were I to do it again, I would simply swap the weak Peugeot 5 speed for the Aisin with a ford small block adapter and drop in either a 3.8 or 4.2 V6. The 5.0 was cool and all, but way more than was needed. Add in the lack of overdrive and long trips became tedious.
Wow Nice engine pick for the Jeep!!! Sounds great sure looks fun.
Looks great!!! Wish I had the knowledge to put a V-8 in my jeep! I sure could use that ford rear end too!
Sweet looking Jeep!, I miss my 84 CJ7
I like what you did it's impressive job! i believe you spent a lot of time on it
Video was worth it for the tip on the transmission alone!
for a franken jeep it's still a dope build man
Your a bad ass for putting this together I wish I could do stuff like that with my tj
Just keep building till you get it right. You can do it.
Absolutely beautiful build,... I'm planning a similar build, only I'm going to go with the ax15 5 speed behind the 302....with the help of advanced adapters lol
Any progress? There is a ton of push back tossing a Windsor into a jeep whenever I look up the street legal way to do it with the AX. I got a new one with an Advanced Adapters gear set.
Looks great! I did the same thing with a Cherokee, still have it
wait... do you have some contact info... i want to do this witht mine
Verry nice jeep
creative with the lcd/android bord as a fuel guage. u give me so ideas
Hey I don't know if you are aware of this but check out this arduino setup.
speeduino.com/wiki/index.php/Speeduino
It will really get the ideas going.
+JYDOG nice. thanks. I bought an uno bord about a month ago have not played with it yet. I have a 97 wrangler. I have everything in it working again with the exception of the blinkers reset after turning (cause I'm cheap). but an engine and axle swap look likely in the next few years. 205000. miles.
Very good video! I've put v8s in Rangers and big blocks in fox bodies. The issue has always been cooling and steering clearance. Were there any steering clearance issues? Also has there been any cooling issues when pulling a trailer? Obviously one would not want to pull a large trailer but just a small cargo trailer. I have a 2004 Wrangler with a 2.4L. I've wrestled with swapping in Jeep 4.0 or even a Chevy small block. But I am partial to Ford and have much more knowledge of the Ford tribal knowledge and have access to more Ford parts. I appreciate your thorough video on the Ford swap. Did you use a front sump oil pan or a hump pan? Did you have to relocate the oil filter?
The only Jeep I’d ever drive
I’m currently planning on a similar swap on my sons TJ. What exhaust manifolds/headers did you use?
Does it bolt up to the stock mounts? Does it require any fab work?
I've been wanting to do a very similar thing with my 98 TJ. Bought it 3 years ago with a 2" body lift and 31" tires bone stock otherwise. AX15 and a 3.08 ratio. Transmission grenaded the same week I bought it. Put in an advanced adapters AX15 and drove fine the few years I did until the transmission half fell out from rust.
ratched strapped the trans back it. Put it on a dolly and towed it to my parents garage where I paid for a 2 post lift in the garage my dad paid to have built. I bought a TDK CJ7 hybrid frame so I can use the guts from my TJ and temporarily modify my body to fit the CJ7 frame until it's running well then buy a new CJ7 tub and build that.
I wanted a Windsor 302 or 351 swapped in but there is a ton of kick back every time I'd search online. Ended up deciding on a 318 or 360 Magnum swap since the harness is identical for everything on the TJ and the AX was used in the V8 Dakota. But seeing someone did this swap and it obviously fit and is working, I want to dig into this again.
I say I have a similar goal because I put factory base model tires on it before the frame broke and I'm knocking out the body lift spacers for the new frame.
If I did this again I would either go for the biggest cubic inch lowest tech motor or a chevy LS. Hard to beat either for cost per ft lbs of torque. I really like a 5-6 speed but its hard to beat an auto to handle all of the torque. I love Ford 302 and 351's but those days are gone
@@JYDOG It's frustrating seeing the aftermarket shift the majority of it's attention to the Coyote, LS/LT, and modern Hemi engines. I'm not dumping my money into those engines specifically to stay away from getting handcuffed to government restrictions because everything is drive by wire and locked up by digital controls. That would completely negate the whole point of what I'm doing.
@@sijonda no I totally agree That's why I was thinking big cubic inch 460 or 454 etc driven by a aftermarket ecu like speeduino.com/home would be real fun and cheap to drive
How did you smog it with conversation.and what's a build like this run I have a yj
How hard war the engine swap. Motor mounts and what not.
that's a dope looking rubicon thumbs up
Thank you. I would not have done this to real rubicon, it's just a hood off a rubicon.
+JYDOG lol, understandable
Is there anyway I could get a build sheet for everything I would need from you man I wanna do this that would be amazing if you could do that so I can just order everything and do it that way lol
Would be 😎
What motor mounts did u use
Out of curiosity what kind of gas mileage do you get? I also have a Jeep TJ that have a 302 out of a bronco with a bunch of mustang parts on it. I’m only getting 6mpg but with some idle problems.
It was covered in the video. He said about 14 - 15 miles to the gallon about the same as a standard Wrangler.
Love the jeep. Great explanation as well of all the components I had been searching for a vid like this for a while. I want to do something with my jeep its a 98 TJ with a old tired 4cyl thats misfiring on me. Got 2 options, new 4 cyl engine block witch is about 1700 or go with a ford or chevy v8 w/e is cheapest LOL about how much did you end up spending to build up your rig?
Yeah, that's a no brainer. The Ford or Chevy should be about the same cost now. I'd definitely go EFI. You can probably get by for 1k or so just for the conversion if you fabricate mounts and source all the parts in a salvage yard.
4 years later, what did you end up doing? I’ve got a 2.5L and thought about EFI swapping but the 2.5 requires new axels, driveshaft and transfer case. Did you change those?
hey bud,, im doing putty much the same set up, winsor with a C6,,
how did you go about the motor mounts???.
did you had to do some sheetmetal cutting in the Dog House hole to fit the transmission bellhousing in there??.
thanks..
I used generic motor mounts from advanced adapters and no hole was needed for the transmission. I used a 4r75w transmission.
glad to hear that, 👍.
did the transfer case fit ok?. or was it tight with the underside of the floor?
It fit perfectly when I had my AOD transmission installed.
Very nice build. Have you ever tracked the mileage?
+Madeleine Cherney Yes, last time I checked it was around 14mpg.
You wouldn’t have any info still on the motor mounts? Pictures maybe? Just taking a shot in the dark. Thanks
They were the universal ford mounts from Advanced Adapters. You might be just as well off making your own but here is a link. www.advanceadapters.com/categories/jeep-mounts/297/
Hello. I have been subscribed to your channel for a while and have enjoyed your videos. What got me to your channel was a v8 jeep search some time back. Well, I have just purchased a wrangler that I am going to convert to a Ford v8....which leads me to my question. Would you mind describing how you had yours set up with the AOD? I really want an automatic and am having trouble finding anyone who has successfully done a ford v8 auto with overdrive swap. I am just curious what model transfer case you used and also what was required to adapt it to the AOD. Everything I am finding is coming out too long and I don't want my rear driveshaft to give problems because it ends up so short. This will be mainly a street cruiser with occasional trail riding....nothing crazy.
I am also curious about the 4R75W....you said from a v6 truck? Where would I find information on the shift module you used in the video?
Thank you in advance for your time.
Jeff
The first time I used a mustang AOD with advanced adapters output shaft to the jeep transfer case. I burned this one up because I put too small of a cooler on it. I then went with a 2008 Ford f150 v6 4r75w trans with a bauman shift control. I never got around to putting the AOD advanced adapter shaft into the 4r75w but I read where it would fit. Here is a link to the shift control. www.becontrols.com/aode.shtml
Great info. Thank you.
I saw where you sold your jeep. Any chance you might still have the aod and / or transfer case and be willing to sell it?
Only reason I asked is Advance Adapters has discontinued the adapter kit for the aod. I think my only options are find a used kit for sale (long shot), or try to use a factory transfer case for an aod. I'm hoping the latter option will work as it may be my only real option. Hoping it will fit in the space without making driveshaft length an issue.
was it expecive to rig the engine trans and if u did it since then the transfer case
Yeah, I had it all working but then I fried my aod transmission and had to switch to a 4r75w and didn't get put the transfer case back in before I sold it.
Or if you would be interested in swapping it for my 99 wrangler it has ARB air lockers 410 gears ford 8.8 rear end custom roll cage was built very well alot of work done I live in Alabama to not far from you I believe of you even still got the jeep
i was wondering where did you get your motor mounts and other parts would be need to do this.
I got the motor mounts from www.advanceadapters.com/ the other parts were custom fabricated like the exhaust and driveshafts.
Very interested in the Arduino set up
Here is the code I used... It is setup for a explorer 8.8 sensor and a Jeep gas guage.

LiquidCrystal Library - display() and noDisplay()
Demonstrates the use a 16x2 LCD display. The LiquidCrystal
library works with all LCD displays that are compatible with the
Hitachi HD44780 driver. There are many of them out there, and you
can usually tell them by the 16-pin interface.
This sketch prints "Hello World!" to the LCD and uses the
display() and noDisplay() functions to turn on and off
the display.
The circuit:
* LCD RS pin to digital pin 12
* LCD Enable pin to digital pin 11
* LCD D4 pin to digital pin 5
* LCD D5 pin to digital pin 4
* LCD D6 pin to digital pin 3
* LCD D7 pin to digital pin 2
* 10K resistor:
* ends to +5V and ground
* wiper to LCD VO pin (pin 3)

What's the tire carrier off of? Looks like a cj unit.
Sorry man, I cant remember.. I bought it used and it was about 7 years ago.
Thanks anyway. Like the Jeep!
Dana 30 axles?
Just the front is a dana 30. The rear is a 8.8 out of a 2000 ford explorer.
She sounds MEAN
Ford WTF you ok dude
Unsubscribed....... spend more time on a stupid jeep video than any videos on the camper van, which is the only reason I started watching...... Done with it.....
Sorry you feel that way. This is who I am and what I do. This channel is about building stuff and this is one of my projects that I posted under the playlist " projects" not my "box camper van" list.
JYDOG that Jeep is now fully pimped out and is up for auction somewhere in Georgia
C- YA !
