Neck pain is a common complaint. However, the most common cause of neck pain is due to myofascial trigger points. These muscle knots can lead to muscle tightness and symptoms such as neck pain, shoulder pain and headaches. That's why it's important to stretch the muscles in the front of the neck (the muscles that get tight from a forward head posture) to stretching the small 'suboccipital' muscles in the back of the head that give rise to headaches.
Key points to remember: Not everyone will feel the neck stretch right away. Some feel the stretch in the front of the neck, while others only feel it in the back. That's okay. It takes several tries to get good at doing this neck stretch. You should also make sure you have addressed any trigger points prior to stretching. You can find and treat trigger points or muscle knots by either simply using your hands and fingers, or using the Muscle Wizard.
If you feel more pain and stiffness after stretching, go back to self trigger point treatments and then slowly try stretching again. We found that people may need to do this a couple of times to make the stretches pain free. Be patient and don't give up!
