I just had to returned five units with the two main units of the ICon QCon Pro X crashing continually. Found it takes too much time out of a working day fixing problems. Therefore, phase it in slowly & make sure you’ve got a back up system so you can continue with your work flow. It’s nice when it works good, but I found it too temperamental and couldn’t take it. Support was also an issue from many warehouse outlets & even more so from ICon QCon being slim on the ground. So do your research to make sure it does what you expect it too and that your not left to get on with it because of its unfamiliarity in the industry tech world. At least this has been my experience in the UK.
Sorry your experience hasn’t been positive. I did another video about DAW controllers where I said you have to manage your expectations with devices like this. We all have different expectations. But the one main point I made is to NOT expect these devices to do everything. They can’t. They are a great accessory but certainly not a master controller for every function. It’s important to understand that before buying one. Which is why I made that other video.
I wasted over 30 minutes on videos, trying to figure out whether the G2 or the X were flagship until your video. People are just not on board with what their viewers are actually looking for. Thank you for that.
Im going to downgrade to the Platform M+. I had the G2 but noticed I used my keyboard a lot more than most the buttons on the G2. The faders, Jog wheel, mute and transport is all I really used
I see that the video is from a year ago, but I'm trying to grow my home studio with a controller. I was wondering if the Nano has expansion possibilities? Thank you.
Yes. The expansion is actually served by the DAW and not the controllers. You can connect as many as allowed by your system. The order of them is setup through your DAW. In essence controllers are just midi devices.
Until they integrate plugin control from the controller....they are nothing but a glorified and expensive mouse. We are getting only partial control of the audio experience through these things. Not worth the expensive $ until plugins can be controlled on them
I actually disagree. Plugins would have to conform to some standard UI for a universal DAW Controller to be able to control them. And that's not happening. Plugin control is a bonus. To me it's the mixing experience that makes these controllers useful. But we all have different expectations...and that's cool...

The reason I asked is because I reached out to Icon pro audio support awhile ago and the said that the Nano is not compatible with extensions. But clearly in you video it appears to be. Thanks for your thoughts. I'm always looking to get better so good constructive feedback helps. I wear all of the hats here so sometimes the stress shows in my delivery but I'm always trying to get better at that. As for Garageband I'm not sure. Does it have the Mackie protocol built in. That would be a dead giveaway. It's not so much the controller supporting the DAW, it's the other way round....
I’ve heard somewhere on some other review that DAW-controllers doesn’t work with GarageBand, because GarageBand doesn’t allow MIDI to flow bi-directional (only in, not out). So controllers would not be able to read settings.
Can you customize the function of any of the buttons w keyboard shortcuts? (ex. Dupe tracks w/o content, snap. etc). I know the SSL can do it. If the Icon Pro product can as well, The Qcon is 1/2 the price with what seems like the same functionality if this is the case.
The best way to answer that is to point out that this is a midi controller. So if that keyboard shortcut triggers a midi event, then yes. That midi even can be mapped to the controller. The brand doesn't matter really. they all conform to the same protocols (Mackie, Hui, Logic). The available functions are decided by the protocols and not the controllers. It’s not specific to the G2. All controllers use a protocol that are DAW specific. There are too many plugins on the market for any of these to be efficient with plugins. They are mapped. But any changes you make will be universal to all plugins. I think. I’ve never tried it.

Thanks so much!!! Really appreciate that. Believe it or not but my desk is a combination of different pieces from Ikea. I got the widest tabletop they had. Theres a 4 cube shelf behind the desk with a little pedestal I found on Amazon that the monitor sits on. And the second monitor is a monitor arm that affixes to the desk. And my little rolly rack is also Ikea. It's 19 inches inside so I bought some rack rails, mounted them inside and boom...instant rack. I'm pleased how it turned out...I'm thinking of doing a tour video and I could detail some of this stuff...

Does the QCon ProX Have just as good DAW control and Integration with Protools as Avid's DAW controllers like Avid's S1 & S3 control surfaces? or would you say Avid control surfaces is better in term of Protools DAW control and integration?
I think it’s safe to say any controller designed for a specific DAW will have deeper integration. Avid and ProTools. Presonus and Studio One. That being said it comes down to the features you need. The Avid controllers are WAY more expensive. You pay for that integration. The Icon controllers have built in HUI so they will work well for most mixing features, perhaps minus deeper integrations. Hope that helps.
Great intro bud, always a treat to watch your vids! You’re finally getting around to the icon pro x review! Been waiting months! Love mine, so much to use hands and ears without my eyes watching waveforms! Would love to see some tutorials on set up, and use as the Icon webpage is ridiculously bad for info. Especially updating the software, and using extenders in different configurations. Took me a while to get the system to work with an extender on each side of the controller.
Thanks so much! I know it was overdue. I know Icon is really trying to step up the game on the support content. It's a tough topic for me to do because there are so many different DAWs to cover and I just use one. But I know they are working on getting better at that by tapping more creators so hopefully that will get better soon. Cheers!
@@LonelyRocker right on, you’re doing a great job and I always appreciate your vids! Your new studio looks great too, nicely put together! It’s Nice to have a ph environment reset once in a while and change it up, seems to kick up the creativity a notch I find. Cheers
Unfortunately I can't answer that question as I've never used that DAW. The DAW needs to support control protocols like Mackie or HUI. If it does, then it's likely any controller that uses these protocols will work.
I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the platform M+ with just 8 channels. I think if I "upgraded" though I'd want to a move to a more advanced version.
You can simply set them up together. One as the main controller and one as an extender. It's quite straight forward...depends on your DAW but should connect without issue...
@@LonelyRocker without physically connecting them? I see there's no port on the back of the Nano to go to the X+ or M+. Then you have to set something up inside your DAW or the included iCon software...?
Icon states on their webpage that the Nano might start at ch1 (taking up ch1-8), and Platform M+ would then begin at ch9… Is this customisable in Logic Pro?
They don’t have to be compatible with each other. Compatibility is determined by the DAW. I have blended product lines with good results. As long as you know how to configure them.
So this is just an advertisement for a product. Can’t really see the point of this. I could just go,to the website and look. I don’t know how it cost compares, how well,it works etc. What exactly is this channel for….what’s the point of it? If you want people to subscribe you should make it clear what you’re about.
I was not paid for this. I received A TON of requests to do this video because Icon fans wanted to understand the differences between the different units. Sorry it didn’t work for you.
Had a Qcon Pro G2 running with Pro Tools unfortunately it kept crashing on a regular basis at least once a day if not two or three times a day, got to the point that I stopped using it. Firmware was all updated, computer was all updated, tried a number of different cables. Also found the jog wheel noisy, very disappointed with the whole experience of owning a Qcon, tried getting an answer from support but nothing, sorry
Awesome as always man! Thanks so much. Quick question, can you connect the Platform X (just extender) with platform nano, without a platform M? Thanks man
Thank you so much!! That's been asked before. If you are adept with midi and can custom map it, in theory it should work. For optimal use, the main units have all of the function keys and the transport controls. It's worth an experiment....
Technically yes but you will have no function control. I really don't see any benefit in doing that unless perhaps you custom map it. But I can't guarantee positive results..
@@LonelyRocker thanks for replying. Yeah I was wondering if there was any way of possibly just using them as a midi controller. There are really no other motorized fader control 🎛️ that is as good as these and if there are midi profiles for different DAWs and such. S far as I know these aren't doing any processing or anything on the unit anyway so they are control surfaces only regardless. From a business perspective the companies obviously want you to buy the expensive base and add expansions, but if you only need 8 faders and a couple buttons per track it would be nice to be able just to buy an expansion unit.
I’m considering buying the platform-size due to the size. However the M+ does not have the functions I need. What are your experience with combining Platform M+ (or X+) together with the Nano Air on Logic Pro? Icon just gives a disclaimer, telling that only some or no functions will work……
I’ve tested all the ones you see in the video. As they are all midi controllers they should all work. But there are so many specific functions it’s hard to say if it will work for you. I mainly use them for mixing and panning. Other functions I just grab the mouse. So really hard for me to advise you from here.
I was asked by many to do an Icon gear comparison. I have reached out to other controller manufactures to see if they would like to be covered. Happy to do so if the gear is made available.

@@christianrholt My pleasure. I haven't used the MAckie but from what I hear it's overpriced...I tried to get one to test in the studio and where I am there are supply shortages...so not much to say about it I'm afraid. But a mate of mine sold his and got an Icon and is happy....
Not anything im interested in but great video! Ill stick tot to the faders on my keyboard as I send off my tracks to get mixed...
They're not for everyone but thanks for your thoughts!
Slick new intro! There is definitely some badass musical sorcery going on behind those frosted glass doors! 😂🤘
Haha! Thank you :)))))
lol icon should have hired you to do the product breakdown you did a better job then their own video 😂😂😂
Haha...actually if you hunt through Icon's RUclips channel...you might just see me :))))
Excellent overview.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the great info.

Hy I would like to know can we use icon plateforme x+ as an extension of qcon pro G2 ?
I have a QCon Pro X and G2 with extenders all working together so I don't see why that wouldn't work....
Does the g2 memorize plugin mapping or do you have to midi learn everytime you open the plugin? Thank you.
It’s not specific to the G2. All controllers use a protocol that are DAW specific. There are too many plugins on the market for any of these to be efficient with plugins. They are mapped. But any changes you make will be universal to all plugins. I think. I’ve never tried it.
Hi, this is best review for iCon's surface!
I am a staff at a distributor in Japan. If there is Japanese subtitles, Japanese customers are very happy.
If we prepare JP text, can you make embedded subtitles?
Hi there! Glad you enjoyed it! Sure! I would be happy to do that for you. Go to the about me section here on my channel and send me a direct email. I will add it as soon as you send. Happy to communicate with my friends from Japan!
@@LonelyRocker Many thanks!
I will do it.
Looking and sounding great. Love a short vid on how you got that Geddy Lee bass tone you have in your awesome intro music.
Thanks so much! Ha! That bass riff literally came out of me the night before I posted the video so I had to throw it in there. I was thi king I should tackle bass tone....perhaps we'll see that here soon!!!
I wished you compared it to the Mackie Controller and Expanders
This comparison was highly recommended but I would be very interested to compare other controllers if I could get them...

LOVE your videos man. Question for you... What desk are you using in your new setup? And what size monitor screen and how is it attached? I have a G2 rig at my own studio, but we are setting up a studio at my church. We wanna go to a Pro X setup and im searching for a desk, Keep up the great work
Thanks so much!!!
@@LonelyRocker very awesome and ingenuities, i will definitely look into some of those ideas. Thanks so much. If you do make a vid along those lines i will be watching. I recently subscribed, We make different kinds of music, but thats why i like your channel. its informative to all types of musicians and engineers
@@russellloving3242 Awesome. So kind of you. Really glad you hopped aboard! Looking forward to hearing from you in the comments!
@@LonelyRocker very very helpful! thanks you for your quick response.
@@timmyblack8588 My pleasure!
Nice bro thanks

The lonely rocker has done it again. Thanks for putting together these great videos. They really help me with my own home studio. Keep them coming.
Post pics of your studio! Would love to see it 😂😂
Great intro bud, always a treat to watch your vids!
Cheers
@@citytonightproductions Always appreciate your thoughts my friend :)
Do you know of a controller that will work with Magix Sound Forge Pro 15? (or 12)
Unfortunately I can't answer that question as I've never used that DAW. The DAW needs to support control protocols like Mackie or HUI. If it does, then it's likely any controller that uses these protocols will work.
@@LonelyRocker Yeah. it doesn't. Thanks, though. Great videos, very helpful.
Thank you. Sorry I didn't have a better answer but I try to provide the best info I can :)
Great video, worth the sub. Oh and the intro was pretty cool too!
Thanks so much! Really appreciate it! And glad to have you here!! Look forward to hearing from you again...
I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the platform M+ with just 8 channels. I think if I "upgraded" though I'd want to a move to a more advanced version.
This was my first hands on with it...it's really a great controller. Very refined and streamlined...
Could you elaborate on using the platform nano with the x+ (or m+)? Does that work with full functionality?
You can simply set them up together. One as the main controller and one as an extender. It's quite straight forward...depends on your DAW but should connect without issue...
@@LonelyRocker without physically connecting them? I see there's no port on the back of the Nano to go to the X+ or M+. Then you have to set something up inside your DAW or the included iCon software...?
Icon states on their webpage that the Nano might start at ch1 (taking up ch1-8), and Platform M+ would then begin at ch9… Is this customisable in Logic Pro?
Great place. Get rid of the tacky mackie ads everywhere.
Ha!! I wish I controlled what ads you see but sadly that is all youtube!!
Whoa, weird. I was just going through your older videos that were about DAW controllers yesterday. Good timing!
Must be something in the air! :)
@@LonelyRocker synchronicities!
@@bealezebub513 I think so! ;)
So, for expansion, is qcon pro compatible with platform x+?
They don’t have to be compatible with each other. Compatibility is determined by the DAW. I have blended product lines with good results. As long as you know how to configure them.
So this is just an advertisement for a product. Can’t really see the point of this. I could just go,to the website and look. I don’t know how it cost compares, how well,it works etc. What exactly is this channel for….what’s the point of it? If you want people to subscribe you should make it clear what you’re about.
I was not paid for this. I received A TON of requests to do this video because Icon fans wanted to understand the differences between the different units. Sorry it didn’t work for you.
Can this control MIDI like a VSTi synth? (CC expression etc)🎸
Technically yes if you know how to map it. It is a midi controller in a mixer form factor with built in mixing workflow templates.

@@LonelyRocker 😂
Had a Qcon Pro G2 running with Pro Tools unfortunately it kept crashing on a regular basis at least once a day if not two or three times a day, got to the point that I stopped using it. Firmware was all updated, computer was all updated, tried a number of different cables. Also found the jog wheel noisy, very disappointed with the whole experience of owning a Qcon, tried getting an answer from support but nothing, sorry
Sorry you had a bad experience. Most of the feedback I get on Icon is positive. Sorry that wasn’t the case for you.
thnx for chkng all these things out!

I'm going for the Icon QCon Pro G2.
Nice!
That intro is tight.........thanks for sharing
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed this....
It's about time someone did this! Thank you!

New intro looks amazing!
Thank you! ;)
@@LonelyRocker will do and let you know results
Thanks man
Can you use the expansion modules without having the base unit?
My pleasure. It’s worth trying. In your case this is just a midi controller and can be mapped with their mapping software. It would be worth a test.
Great intro, and a nice fresh look!
Thanks so much!
Great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
The “best” DAW Controller…. Three choices by the same company…. Ok
I was asked by many to do an Icon gear comparison. I have reached out to other controller manufactures to see if they would like to be covered. Happy to do so if the gear is made available.
IMO you get more value for the money with a Behringer X-touch(expander).
If it works for you then you have the right device for you...
Love the Rush bobbleheads!
A must for the studio!!! :)
Love the new opening! Great job!
Thanks so much! It was time for a refresher...
Hi does g2 pro works with M1 mac?
I'll have to look into that. But if your DAW is supported, it should be by association but don't quote me on that...
Yes, all iCON controllers work with the M1 Mac.

A question: The display on the Qcon G2 extender looks out of alignment with the faders??? Is this for real?
Out of alignment??? How so?
@@LonelyRocker If you look at the graphic of the extender that you use, (the same as is on Icon’s website I believe), the backlight does not appear to be aligned with the faders. (Too far to the left and part of it missing on the right. I’ve searched deeper and have come to the conclusion that it is just a badly made graphic and yes, the backlight screen does align. Take another look and see if you agree.
@@simontassano5992 The backlight is for the display and has no relationship with the faders. It's aligned to balance with the main unit. All looks great here on the desk. Have to say, this observation is a first ;)
@@LonelyRocker maybe you could nudge Icon to fix the graphic - I think it would be critical for anyone considering purchasing one of these units (myself for instance…;-). I’m guessing it’s just a cut and paste mistake from their art dept. It’s tough to photograph a piece with a backlight and have it look right. I’m convinced they dropped an image of the backlight onto the extender, but did not do it correctly. However - small potatoes..;-) keep up the great work and enjoy your new “cave”. Pax, Simon
how do i put the g2 in vegas mode?
I've never used Vegas but the DAW would have to support HUI or Mackie to connect.
