I bought it straight away. It's the first controller made to work deeply integrated with Logic. Other solutions never worked convincingly with Logic, so I'm happy to be an early adaptor in order to support Nektar for their development effort.

Well well ... the time has come for affordable DAW outboard controllers ... great approach to DAW HI (human interface) with knobs, a motor fader and a usable display
    Thanks a lot for sharing

  • @Skijumptoes

This is brilliant for those who don't just want a set of faders as most controllers offers.
I've used MCU devices in the past and the parameter control always seems to be a secondary thought, whereas this seems specifically designed for plugin parameters and has the colour coding, button per insert slot and 12 rotaries which really set it apart. Not to mention that parameter names are longer than MCU offers so they make sense.
Doesn't need a PSU either which is a real bonus. Could be onto a winner with this!!

I love my CS12. I've just scratched the surface so far, and other than some lag with the fader catching up when adjusting on a channel, this is a wonderful interface.

Wow very clever! I usually work in Ableton but have Logic and this device would help me get over the initial problem from being fast in one daw and slow in another. Well done nektar. I have had my eye on the softube console but it’s outrageously expensive and I don’t have much space on my desk. But this is smaller. Albeit I’d prefer if it did work with Ableton also but I might get it for just learning logic. Logic is very pretty.

    Thanks for the test,
don't get me wrong, I think the controller is very good and I'll buy it when it's set up for Nuendo.
What I absolutely don't understand is Nektar's mapping decision for the Logic internal EQ and Fabfilter Pro Q2. It is reported that Nektar has many years of experience with mapping.
With the Logic EQ, the order of the parameters on the graphical interface of the vst is from top to bottom:
    - Frequency
    -gain
    -Q
    and on the controller
    -Q
    - Frequency
    - Gain
With Fabfilter Pro Q3 on the graphical interface:
    - Frequency
    -gain
    -Q
    and on the controller:
    -Q
    - Frequency
    - Gain
Maybe there is a logical reason that I don't understand right now, but I would immediately remap it so that it works for me. Which isn't a problem since it's done very quickly, but I'm a little surprised about it.
If I look at the graphical interface on the monitor and then reach for the controller without looking at the display, I would first turn the wrong parameter, so I have to remember it or look at the CS12 display. This doesn't make the work any faster, it just makes it more confusing...

    • @randyfurlong6181

Things like moving between track, selecting multiple tracks and manipulating multiple tracks will still let me to grab the mouse and keyboard. Maybe a touchscreen so it can show contextual content depending on wetter you are on Track leve or project level with tectonic Feedback (feeling the faders under your fingertips could solve that problem?

This is super dope. I’m interested to hear directly from a Nektar representative about plans to keep up with software/firmware updates. I love the idea of investing in a DAW controller, but the reality is that Apple, Logic, & plugin manufacturers (new & old) are continually bringing new features and updating. Will Nektar support this device 4,5,6 years from now after the majority of its core audience has already purchased theirs and sales are slowing down?

    • @NektarTechnology
      @NektarTechnology 2 месяца назад

Glad you like the CS12! Nektar supports all our products released into the market. And yes, you're right that software platform developers and plugin developers are regularly updating their software. Like all other manufacturers and developers, we have to review all such instances based on a priority system, so for example an operating system update that causes ALL users to be unable to use their Nektar product will receive high priority in an update being issued by our development team. And on the other hand a very minor issue created by a plugin developer that affects a very small minority of Nektar users might end up further down the priority line. Applying such a methodology ensures we apply our resources as best possible to address the most impactful needs, and those of the majority of users. And if anyone wants to raise a query or report a possible fault then you can raise a support ticket at the following address, which will typcially be replied to within 24-48 hours (allowing for 24hour time zone coverage)...nektartech.com/submit-ticket/

I haven’t updated yet to 12 because I’m mid project but the only gripe is that it isn’t pretty like Logic. I want to learn Logic and I think this controlller would be a great way to get used to it without getting frustrated with different key shortcuts. But Reason Studios is my main daw. Thank you.

What the home recording musician needs is a producer/engineer. Soundchecking your acoustic guitar/voice with two semi-close mics and ambient mic-cing from within a forest of mics is the most hugest pain in the keister ever. The second is programming a drum track. I tend to set the tempo then programme a kick drum rather than use Reaper's AWFUL metronome that leaks badly through cans and counts the bars in a way that I really don't need. I put in a closed hi hat for count ins and breaks. Fill in the rest of the kit afterwards. The biggest single benefit you get from going to a studio is the engineer moving mics in soundcheck trials.
Another thing - plugins is a hundred billion options in highly CPU-consumptive host software and mostly you just use one of about three go-to choices. SCROLL,SCROLL,SCROLL - through useless, useless sounds.
Once these "set-up/soundcheck" things are attended to, a mouse/screen control isn't a problem at all - all you need is the transport - STOP/GO. Three takes. Anything with a small screen display for desk-operation (or any screen at all) is missing the trick - it needs to replace entirely the DAW display on your monitor with analogue-style surface control - but I don't play at the desk. Why would I want to do that?
Otherwise put, the ideal arrangement is a mixing desk that's half the size of the Moon faced by near-field monitors. The DAW screen and midi is on the right hand side for it's occasional set-up use. Underneath this are the boxes-and-boxes of hook-up stuff such as headphone amps/whacking great playback amps/copying stuff/computer/printer/USB-DAT-CD - whatever you use - etc.... that sort of thing. You don't want to be looking at any screens, you need to be properly placed for your near-field monitors.
This Nektar thing is interesting but a "desk" covered in little half-way-house gew-gaws like this isn't where it's at. You may as well have a decent size analogue-style mixing desk hooked up to a DAW. It won't take up any more precious room space than all the shitty little gizmos that plague home set ups. What are you going to do with this? Use it on your lap? Place it in the middle of a large table?
Why does this have to be miniaturised? Who wants "soft touch" buttons or rotaries? When are face-down computer nerds and geeks going to realise that a screen is the last thing you need in your face when making/mixing music and multi function controls and menus are the most annoying, stinking-est thing ever?
What the home recordist needs is release from the desk and screen. The only really useful thing is to easily put up a full-screen display for all the amazing virtual stuff available. Since we must have a screen, make it as big as possible. I use Reaper and a wall-mounted large screen TV display. I can programme drums on a full-screen display without too much pain and I can operate it from anywhere in the room with the mouse for playing/singing to the drums through h/phones. I don't need the mixer for recording and can dump that until it's mixing time...which helps....but I can show the mixer and operate it from anywhere if I want.
There are compromises. My monitor speakers are to my left, I turn in my seat to mix/listen back. This puts my mouse-operated big-screen mixer (Reaper) to my right - not in my eye line but easily accessed. When I'm not recording, I have a clear desk for keyboard/mouse, pen-and-paper or watch football, the only other things are a small interface and a tiny passive mixer to select/blend my CD player, guitar practice amp and the computer audio. It's very "real world" - and annoys the neighbours no end.
Reaper, Logic, Cubase, Ableton etc - you do whatever you like. Why do I need a desk-bound gizmo with a tiny screen? If I want to adjust EQ, reverb on any selected track etc, it's f*ck-off BIG on my screen anywhere in the room and to my right for playback/ mixing.

I think that you can improve workflow by having dedicated controls, and a knob per function system. I guess it is fun to use the nectar but it is much to much put inside this unit. For me, it is not the right thing.

Because you have to discriminate in order to serve a single niche well and be competitive...

    • @KandMe1
      @KandMe1 2 месяца назад

@@GingerDrums I guess it’s a round about way of facing the real issue, why not open it up to the user? All the daws on iPad or the beast of them can be used cooperatively. They would sell more if the device could be exploited in midi, especially with midi 2 fully set. Native Instruments have a keyboard boasted as midi 2. We don’t know the details of what midi 2 actually is. The manufacturers get to implicate the whole of it but from what I gather it’s about ports the adult above those 16 channels, which means there would likely be 128 children for each port, which means; 128 sets of 16 channels with the default 128 cc/pc’s per channel but that is a guess. Whatever the outcome it opens up a lot creative space to exploit with those myriad of creative apps, plugins and daws on an iPad. If they want to compete then competing means stopping monopolising and hedging their own apps and daws.

Look! don't get me wrong! I love Nektar products but this unit was extremely designed for Logic, even the knobs reflect the colors of Logic's plugins which have no benefit in Cubase for instance. Bottom line, even if it will support other DAWs with of course some integration issues, it will still work flawlessly in Logic.
