    Finally, was waiting for it. Thank you so much for your view on the v1-m. After you didn't mention any major flaws, at least nothing, that seem like one to me, I will give this unit a try and make it a christmas gift for myself. I'm looking forward to hopefully more videos on it from you. Also that effort, that goes into your videos is remarkable. I would like to see a video, where you compare the commonly used daws operated with the v1-m to see, if they all work well, but I guess, it's asked for to much. Keep up the great work!😊

    Well, years ago I bought myself a Nektar Panorama P6, which was perfectly integrated with Reason. But over the years I found myself using the special knobs and faders less and less. I have too many different Rack Extensions and VSTs installed, and to be honest I find it much simpler to stay on mouse and keyboard instead of switching to my controller and finding out how I could map the thousands of functions to those controller parts. I think it's a race that can't be won. My opinion today is: My perfect controller just should be a large touch tablet which functions like a zoom window and/or second screen. So if I see an opened VST on my big monitor, it is also displayed on the tablet and I can touch-control it there. And if I want I can lock the display to continously control this plugin while doing other things on my main screen.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  7 месяцев назад +1

      I actually got a small touch screen to experiment with plugins. It works but I just couldn't find a good reason to sue it that way so now it's just a third monitor for meter displays. I like faders and transport and that's what I use my controllers for 99% of the time...

    Thanks Dan ! The thing with the joggle button made me think on something, I happen to have a MPK Mini with 8 assignable buttons, I was like "what if I could do the same with those buttons...". The answer is yes, I can use them, with LogicPro, you have to add the MPK Mini as a control surface, then you can assign functions. By default, the compressor plugin is fully assigned, this is a game changer as I could adjust threshold, attack and release settings together (well 2 by 2, I only have 2 hands :)).
    I can't tell with the other DAWS as I only have Logic, but I'm pretty sure you could.

    Firstly got to say really good review of the Icon V1-M.
    Love the look of it and a lot of the features and layout of it.
    Got to say though I’m really struggling with this controller, let me explain. My background is as a mix engineer and then teaching audio to 11-16 year learners.
    I had an Icon QCon Pro G2, running Pro Tools. There were a number of issues with the hardware, issue with one of the encoders, to much travel on one of the fader’s and some strange slipping with the jog wheel (all happened straight out of the box). After returning it and getting a replacement I still had an issue with one of the fader’s.
    Along with this had countless issues running it with Pro Tools, went through the installation processes properly several times, unfortunately could never get it to run anything like it should, things like connectivity, buttons just not working and once or twice faders just moving for no reason even though there was no automation on the track. These issues were random and I never knew what was going to happen when I sat down to do some mixing.
    Now this is my issue the V1-M controller looks good but from your review I’m not convinced that there aren’t going to be any issues regarding using it Logic Pro (I switched from Pro Tools but that’s a whole different story) and with a price over here in the UK of between £920 to £950 is a lot of money.
    When you see what you can buy from SSL UC-1 & UF-1, UF8 or the Nector Panorama for similar money or less ( I know these aren’t exactly the same).
    The SSL stuff has an extremely good build quality and I’ve not heard of any real issues with faders, encoders or the jog wheel, along with this connecting and running Logic with them from what I can gather no issues. With the Nectar Panorama it was built for Logic and all the reviews I’ve seen rave about it.
    So here’s my conundrum as much as I don’t have much faith in Icon and the cost is quite high for me (due to my past experience) I really like what I’ve seen and would suit my workflow, but don’t want to make the same mistake twice.
    Now going to watch the Q & A that you have done on another video, keep up the good work you are doing an amazing job thank you

    Dan, thank you so much for this video! I was unaware of this product. Do you feel that this would be a very good controller to enter and edit articulation automation for VST orchestral libraries, such as Spitfire and Vienna Synchron? I have never had a control surface like this and don't yet understand them quite. I need to store and recall sets of the faders in sets of 8, and I am hoping to do this for about 75 sets. Can do this on this unit? May I ask, do you offer online screen share consults to help me get rolling? Thank you for this carefully crafted video!

    Dan, as with most control surfaces for me it's how well the plugins are laid out. With ProTools and a Mackie Control Universal I found it very limited. You had to scroll through to many "Pages" with only 4 of the rotary knobs being used at any given time. I now am on Reaper and use the MCU and CSI(third party programming to have Reaper and any MIDI style control surface work together). I be curious on how the V1-M works with plugins before I'd buy. The 24 panel touch screen does look like this could open up other aspects of the surface.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  7 месяцев назад +2

      I did demonstrate how the focus feature gets you to the plugin functions quicker. It's not like a knob per function thing so it depends on how you like to work.

    Me again. Having watched this video several times, something occurred to me, regarding the exciting touch-sensitive panel. When I first saw it, it reminded me of Stream Deck, which I own. I think, ultimately, Icon are onto a real winner here, because they could surely exploit this and get deeper with third-party plugins. Imagine being able to call up any plugin you own, both FX and instruments, and have them inserted into the selected track. I'm sure they could construct an entire layer dedicated to this, and even somehow let the user assign icons of their choice to the various plugins in the panel layer, like Stream Deck. It's only 1's and 0's. Right? 😉

I actually envision that being better than click and drag up or down, right-left, or what ever it answers to... always a pain. Right had on mouse, turn the dial. Especially with something like Mixbus32c. Won't even have to select a channel or track, just "point and turn"! Something that keeps a hand on the control section will also encourage more hands-on usage of the controller itself, instead of it just sitting there and looking pretty.

    I use a translator.
    I also plan to take half a day icon. and for some reason I was sure that I could select any plugin and control all functions using faders and encoders without touching the mouse.
    Cubase has a new remote midi function, when any controller can be programmed for anything.
    For this case, I bought myself a Novation launch control xl and programmed it to work with plugins. All 24 encoders and 8 faders now control any plugin, even if the plugin has 30 settings. bliss. I don't touch the mouse at all.
    I just close my eyes, pick up my controller and listen.

    Hey Dan, ok what is your honest feedback about Icon reliability? Because honestly I LOVE my QCon Pro G2 + Extender. However, having maybe too much fatih in Icon products like in any other music gears I ever had, being lucky to be never, never, NEVER defective, I cut my mixing desk to integrate them. I really found this integration soooo much sexy!... until both devices broke, one six months after the other. 😅 In one case a fader just became blocked in a position, in the other case the entire unit looked like not booting anymore once switched and all lights on, preventing any access to its USB connection or hidden settings. So both left of course each time a huge whole in my desk for more than 1 month... 😞 Now with this new product line, I really consider purchasing those (how crazy I am 🤔🤨), because they consist on a huge step forward and remain for me the best, professional looking and affordable option for numerous DAWs. But what is your personal experience of their products reliability, since you owned and used several models? I don't see myself purchasing spare units...

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  7 месяцев назад +1

      So, I have had a good experience with all of the controllers I have. I have had 5 different product lines. The wireless Nano was the worst of them all. The controller was fine but the wireless feature was inconsistent. I do have a relationship with Icon but I am NOT paid to make the videos for my channel. The Q Con Pro (White) G2, Pro X and Platform M+ have all worked properly. The White QCon is 5 years old now and still works fine. I have read comments from others who have had some issues. They are mechanical devices and a failure is always possible. Regardless of brand. And getting them fixed is not like taking an amp to the shop. That's the reality with controllers. So I always recommend buying them from a reputable retailer and make sure the warranty provided by the store is made clear. Hope that helps!!!!

    I bought the previous gen Nano. The biggest frustration is that the fader automation relates to the Volume and Pan ONLY. Regardless of what is highlighted in your automation lane, the fader will only respond to Volume and Pan. This rendered it immediately useless for my purposes, and it's been sitting on a shelf gathering dust ever since.
    Having a motorised fader limited to automating merely two basic functions, when DAW automation lanes can control virtually every parameter imaginable, make these units antiquated before they even hit the market.
    At least, that's my experience in Logic and Cubase. And I hear all the rhetoric about Mackie protocols, etc...
    However, to make the situation even more frustrating...
    The Icon Nano works in Ableton 11 the way you'd expect it to. The fader responds to the automation lane - regardless of what parameter is automated. And it works straight out of the box. No special config necessary - it just works. Why it can't do that in other DAWs is beyond me.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  5 месяцев назад +1

      The reason is Mackie is just one part of the story. The other part is how DAW developers deal with the Mackie protocol. For example, Logic doesn’t send master fader values to Mackie so the controllers can’t display the master meter values. There’s no way for the controller to display it if the DAW doesn’t report it. Icon has worked directly with as many DAW developers as they can but companies like Apple are very uncooperative. That’s why the experience varies from DAW to DAW.

Using the 3 slots only for premapped DAWs is too much. There are only a every few people (mostly educators and business audio engineers) who use 3 DAWs simultaneously. It's much better when you can use it with media apps as well that support those functions like CC and shortcuts. reply to question 1.....I was reading through the manual and it appears that you can. Set them as templates. I had the same question... here's from the manual..
      Practical uses for the DAW modes
      Some users might want to use two instances of the same DAW for, say buttons
      DAW#1 and DAW#2. Why? Well, let's take Fernando. Fernando is a young, up and
      coming producer and musician and he likes to master his own material too.
      On a day-to-day basis, Fernando uses Cubase as his 'go to' DAW to record. He
      has set up his template which he loads into Cubase and he has also set up the
      touchscreen on his V1-M to load all of his favorite Cubase commands when pressing
      DAW button #1, when recording and mixing.
      When mastering, however, Fernando imports his final mix stereo files into his
      mastering template in Cubase. Because this is a different task altogether, which
      requires a different approach, he has organized different commands for mastering
      purposes in Cubase which load when pressing DAW button #2.
      Hope that helps

      yes there are 4 ports in imap they appear in your daw settings port 1 is the first one port 2 then port 3 . port for is specifically not for the daw but for imap to talk to the hardwar. so what you do is simple just add 3 controllers to your daw in settings and set 1 to port 1 then next to port 2 and third port 3 . easy as just remember port 4 appears but dont set it for anything in your daw. Thats 1 reason why you must follow the order to start things. 1, start controlled then imap program lastly your daw. if you dont the daw might steal port 4 on some daws and it wont work

    What I think is a shame is that, although it is easier to control plugins with the Focus button, you still have to do this with the mouse and the encoder on the controller, and therefore in 2 movements: operate the mouse with the right hand to control the function (e.g. volume) and then go to the encoder with the same hand to increase or decrease. In many, even smaller studios, a trackball with a scroll ring is increasingly seen, which makes it possible to select and edit a virtual item (eg volume control of a plugin) in one and the same move.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  6 месяцев назад

      I think the challenge is finding a “universal” way to do this. FORM FACTOR is such an important consideration. As well as differences between each DAW. The best DAW Controller would be the one each DAW developer would make for its own DAW. For most DAWs I don’t think there would be a market big enough to justify its existence. Plus, as I mentioned, the Mackie limitations. I think Icon has done a great job considering these very real challenges.

    For me, having all of this taking up my entire desk space and still having to hook up a separate audio interface just doesn’t make sense. If this also had mic/line inputs at the back (like the Rodecaster Pro 2 or the Mackie Creator) so I could also connect my instruments directly without the need for a separate audio interface this would have been a fantastic set up.
    Looks great though, but for now I’m very happy with my Rodecaster Pro 2 and single fader Behringer X Touch One control surface combo.

    • @LonelyRocker
      @LonelyRocker  4 месяца назад

      Icon had an audio interface module for the original QCon Pro but in the end it wasn’t practical. While it may seem convenient in the end it’s not. The controller and interface may have different life expectancies so linking the two is not a good idea. And an interface doesn’t actually take up desk space so it’s best, in my opinion, to have it as a separate device. But I get the desk commitment is too great for some people.

      I had a behringer X-touch it got me wanting more. SSL is without doubt the most comprehensive Daw controller. Now the UF8 was out for awhile without many upgrades. but now is so great. To really get the best out of this system I would say that the UF8 ,UC1 and UF1 are what is needed. Starting out i would go with the UF8 and over time acquire the others.
      What is really amazing is the free 360 software that is layed out like an SSL board which is controlled from UF8 and others. Really the best way is to go online and check these out yourself. Good luck and have fun.

      SSL is great but it is geared mainly to it's own plugins. If you are mainly mixing with SSL channel strips its definitely the way to go. Though I have other thoughts about that I talked about in my buyer's guide video.

    • @Jeff_Sloan
      @Jeff_Sloan 6 месяцев назад +2

      I am pondering, to the point I am just waiting on Thomann to send it to me, they already have my money! :)
      I have the X-Touch and 2 Extenders. I have them raised up to almost a 45 degree angle. The scribble strips are still hard to read, even though I can get colors working with MB32C. I believe the strips will be so much more readable on these.
      Turns out that these are actually a lil wider and deeper than the X-Touches, but I have the room.
      The meters being at the top facing you will be better for me than on the surface facing up.
      The labeling of the track buttons is so much better I believe.
      On the X-Touch, next to the meter is the word "clip", which is also right next to the red record button.
      "Oh shoot! I'm Clipping?!!!" Nope, just record armed.
      On X-Touch, Rec, Solo, and Mute labels are between buttons.
      Which one is it? The one above? The one below?!
      Can be hard to tell, especially with clients wanting to push a button!
      With ICON, and the labels on the buttons themselves, this fixes that.
      For me, to get the banking working with the X-Touch and extenders and Studio One, I had to get MidiTranslatorPro, and program the heck out of it to make the screen move with the fader banks, and get 24 to bank at once instead of just 8, etc. Going back and forth from S1 and MB32C, meant having to turn off and on the X-Touches, possible reboot of the computer, and even re-assigning in MB sometimes. Also, with MB, the scribble strips didn't always populate until I would do something like delete the first track and put it back in.
      The ICON's programable touch screen buttons. multiple DAW setup, 5 sets of shortcut buttons to swap through, I believe this is going to be awesome for me.
      Even the focus feature and wheel will be great for me.
      For instance...
      Sure, I can hover over an eq knob on MB, and then click and drag up or down...
      Or, move the mouse wheel (roll from top to bottom, lift finger, move back to top of wheel, roll more toward bottom, do again, and again)
      Or now, just hover over with mouse with right hand, and turn the big meaty knob with my left, and if I use the finger in the indention, spin to my heart's content without stopping, lifting, replacing, wash rinse, repeat...

    Is the master out LED still dead on this model or has it been fixed now? ... I was actually about to buy a Pro X this weekend, but at the last minute, discovered that this part of the meter bridge doesn't work with any DAW except Bitwig, and I didn't like the "pass the buck" attitude the manufacturer appeared to take regarding sorting it (they basically told their customers to take it up with their DAW developer rather than dealing with the developers themselves and organizing the necessary integration, BEFORE selling it as a feature and taking people's money) ... If this information is incorrect, or the problem has now been resolved, I would still like to buy one, but currently it's put me off tbh ... Thanks

    • @LonelyRocker

      There is an appetite for products like this but unfortunately the experience is different from DAW to DAW and there is NO way to fix it unless the DAW developers cooperate. It’s a reality for EVERY manufacturer of these devices unless it is a controller made for a specific DAW like what Presonus does. Apple will not open its developer kit to third party controllers so there are gaps like the master meter. But there are a ton of great features too that work perfectly well. If it’s not for you I get it but the overall experience far exceeds not having one at all.

      @@LonelyRocker I was hoping you were going to tell me that my info was out of date and it had been fixed, but thanks for the reply anyway, I appreciate it. I'm not sure about the new model in your video (which does look awesome, I must admit!) but the Pro X comes with Cubase labelling installed out of the box, so while I agree with your point, I think that it would be reasonable for any customer to expect that it would at least work properly with Cubase... Personally, a controller with motorized faders is what I'm interested in, and this one with a beautiful meter bridge just added a level of cool that I couldn't resist, but seeing one meter not working on it every day would be like sitting at a console with a blown channel for me, a constant negative distraction, so i'll give it a miss. 😔

      It would appear that this would be an easy fix if you could assign the stereo out to this master fader rather than it just assigned to the master fader in the daw! The master fader doesnt have an active meter in logic so id presume thats why there isnt one sent to the meter bridge! Surely a quick fix would be reassigning the master fader in imap! No? Easy fix for icon?

    9:00 - "it operates backwards" - lol, I bet that's because jog wheel just becames simply a mouse scroll wheel :D try jog wheel in browser (Safari, Chrome, whatever) to see if it scrolls page.
    and if that's true - that's reason why it operates backwards - because of stupid macOS "natural scrolling" which is one setting for both touchpad (where it makes sense) AND mouse (where it doesn't) so it's backwards when you have that enabled :P
