Did you just wind the tape on the wrong direction and then explain that it must be wound on in the right direction? 😱
I'm 59 and the recent cold spell & thaw forced me to -- finally! -- grow up and fix my own ice-wrecked leaks. A combination of beginner's luck, push-fit fittings, and RUclips have got me further than expected without flooding the house. So far. But I have a very, very slow drip on an old compression fitting... so here I am. Thanks for helping convince me I'm ready for the next step on my plumbing journey. What could possibly go wr... hang on, can anyone else hear dripping? ;-)
This video should be used as an example for all 'how to' videos. Exemplary editing and filming, subtle humour, multiple solutions no annoying background music or overly long intros. Thanks so much. I now know what to get on my trip to Screw-Fix tomorrow morning.
Sawmill Or toolstation 🤔🤔🤔
Dude, not only are you a good teacher because you know what you're talking about, clearly, but you made me laugh as well. I love it when learning is fun, as it should always be, and i dare say i'm not alone. Looking forward to more of your stuff. And thanks for the laugh.
Whenever I have a plumbing problem I go straight to this channel for the fix. Thanks mate for bailing me out of many a hole.
This video was actually filmed on a dry, sunny day. His entire house just happens to be leaking :)
Great videos ! 👍
Best plumbing tips out there. Clear, concise, and easy to understand for the novice wanting to learn. Great camera work and explanations. Thanks very much for taking your time to produce these mini films.
Here I am in Tennessee I am learning from my England friend. :) A lot of video were done under the kitchen sink but the basic idea is the same. This gave me the courage to tackle this job. Thanks.
This gentleman should receive a knighthood for his generosity in helping us with his professional knowledge.ive said it before and I say it again, grateful thanks to you for your great videos and great personality.
Best self video I have seen in a long time. Love that you filed this in the rain and changed hats every few minutes.
The PTFE trick on the olives worked brilliantly for me thanks for the great advice! No more dripping compression joints!!
Excellent video from across the pond, and thank you.In my 20 + years of plumbing, I have never had a leaking compression fitting that the right amount of PTFE tape wound tight enough and the right direction would not stop.Cheers.
Discovered your channel in the last year so it’s amazing to watch stuff you did 10 years ago and see how your production / editing etc has changed. Bring back the random hats I say!
I really appreciate these videos. I'm doing my home work before tackling the kitchen tomorrow. New sides, cupboards, installing dishwasher etc!
Thanks mate, the PTFE tape on the olive sorted my compression joint weep, the humour in your videos is an extra bonus!
This is brilliant, I was struggling to stop a leak because I was putting the PTFE in the wrong place. Did this and hey presto, all is well. Also, I love the presentation. You should be on the telly. I love the hats.
Thanks for this!!! I used Teflon tape around the olive and it worked!
Your PTFE tape on the copper olive pressure fittings solved all three of my weeping DIY fittings today. Cheers!
Your spot on about PTFE being the best at sealing compression fittings around the olive. Nice video keep up the good work!
You saved our life. We understood very little about compression fittings and had no idea how to find or fix the leak.. Very good explanation about how compression fittings work, and what they look like. The teflon tape did the trick!! Thanks so much.
I'm building my bathroom, never plumbed before but your videos are helping me massively. Thank you.
Thanks so much for this..the tape round the olive is such a great tip.
You are a hero! We were able to fix with plumbers tape. Thanks from California! P.S. My wife and I love how you say "olive". Thanks for saving our New Years!
Greatly appreciated the run down on all this information. Brilliant explanation of the PTFE tape.
Saved again by your Brill instructions!
Thanks a lot. Hacksaw, removed and replaced old olive, ptfe tape over olive and paper test dry even on slightly scored pipe. Always tempted to nip too tight- gently does the trick.
Dude, you just got yourself a new subscriber. This video was AWESOME! 😂 I've always called that thing a compression ring but from now on I will always call it an olive! Outstanding work my good man. Outstanding work indeed!
Thank you very much for your suggestions. I tried all until I finally got to the point where you wrap the olive in Teflon tape (PTFE). That worked, like a charm!!!!
I'm so pleased I watched this. Doing a big job on my hot water cylinder and not confident with compression fittings. Now I know how to fix the ones that leak. Thanks for making the video.
Wrapping the olive with ptfe tape worked for me! Thank you!
Your great video's are building up my plumbing knowledge massively!
Cheers!
Your hat. I love your hat. Also just fixed a failed weld in this house we just took over with a compression fitting, and your video was part of my self imposed training course. Thanks!
Thank you. I had a stubborn leak at the compression ring on the shut off valve of the kitchen sink. Tried everything I could think of including the Teflon tape. Didn't work, so as a last resort, bought some pipe joint compound, stuffed the whole thing full and by god it worked. Was ready to call a plumber to replace the compression ring. You saved me a bunch of money.. Thanks again.
Very good, useful information. Thanks for sharing your insights via this video. You are a hat master. btw: I am jealous of your weather as I sit here in the high desert of California.
Hadn't tried Ptfe on leaky compression fittings before but your confidence leads me to give it a try. One tip you like to add is to never keep tightening away on a leaky fitting if an initial nip doesn't work. This increases the chances of squeezing the olive immovably onto the pipe, often making the leak worse, sometimes even running out of thread to tighten. Thanks again on another useful video.
These videos have been so helpful and have helped me solve so many issues. Happy to subscribe :)
Had this leak when I removed my washing machine inlet hose. Fixed it a treat thanks to this great video, thanks mate!
Mate. PTFE worked like a charm! Even after I mangled the stub out pulling of the old olive. Thank you.
Thank you sir! The PTFE tape trick worked like a charm.
This is a great video. Solved my leaky problem with no fuss and extra filler BS. Subscribed (and I rarely subscribe to anything!)
Great advice (and interesting hat changes). This has given me some extra confidence to stop that pesky leak under the sink. I've used compression joints before, most of them successfully.....but there's one little beast, which is on one end of a very short piece of pipe, that won't seal. It could be that I've over-tightened & stressed the pipe...in which case I'll have to fit a new piece ( pain in the ****)....but I'll try the PTFE tape on the olive first. Thanks!
Sending you plumber Love from Denver Colorado! Trying to fix compression fitting on the water feed to my swamp cooler.
After struggling with non-functioning compression fittings for a long time ... the tape worked ! Thanks
I wish you lived closer mate I love watching your videos, recently got our upstairs rads not working right, got a gravity fed system but gonna get new combi boiler asap
Like the video, nicely told, quick and easy steps explained by a decent accomplished plumber. It was worth the view, assistance and thumbs up.
+Martin Henry Cheers Martin!

Thanks for this! I was struggling with my first compression fitting repair tonight.
Fantastic! I've got a leak in a 22mm compression joint in my loft. As with other comments, very to the point, no waffle and loads of possible solutions to a recurrent problem for us weekend plumbers! Loved the diagonal olive cutting tip... Just wonder if I'd be able to pull it off with a Hep2o pipe🙄
Weather is as bad as mine in Wales. I got a leaky pipe after putting on a new tap. The old Compression joint. So I will undo it and thanks to your clip will hopefully be able to sort it. Thanks man.
changing faucet valve both compression fitting leaked -hot and cold , tried the tape , worked !!! thank you ! only problem it will take 2 men , a female midget and a 30 foot cheeter to replace in the future
I used the trick of plumbers tape to seal an old olive that would have been a nightmare to get off. it was the only way that was going to stop leaking , thank you so much. My son in law is a handyman and when I suggested it , he looked at me like I was nuts, but he tried it, he said he had never seen anyone do it , but he really liked it for an emergency.Thank you very much!
You Brits have some funny names for things, but this video was great!! And thanks for the help. Tape did the job!
Excellent video, very well explained. Some great tips and great hats. Thanks.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have saved my hubby from certain death as we couldnt stop the leak (I was about to strangle him). This guy is awesome! x
Talking about leaking joints in the pouring rain.
Brilliant use of props mate!
The tape around the olive worked a treat!! What a star ;)

The PTFE worked like a charm. No more leaking, thanks!
Saved me alot of trouble, just used the saw method to get the coupling loose and found that the fitting itself was cracked. No amount of tightening or tape was going to fix that. Thanks for the video, clear and helpful ❤
Nice work!
Precisely the tip I was looking for (using tape) - you're a star!
Love it...great presentation...Love all your hair styles and head gear too.
The ptfe tape worked GREAT! Thank you.
Thanks for the video! Very comprehensive. Now I'm going to start on my compressing ring.
Thanks for the advice! i used PTFE tape around the top of the olive and its just stopped a leaky isolator, very grateful for the information i can put the water back on now :)!

Just want to say that this video saved my project. Was so scared to put PTFE tape on an olive, but it saved a leaky fitting that I could not get to stop leaking after an hour of trying.
Simply, it solved my problem. It saved my day. Thank you!
Thanks for getting wet for us! The PTFE worked great, saved me a few quid, cheers!
What a nice guy...and all so well explained...top notch
I had a bastard of a time replacing a valve but I got through it with the help of your constantly changing hats and sound advice. Thanks a lot!
No worries!
Absolutely bloody brilliant. You stopped a major job from escalating. Many thanks
Food for thought. I'm trying the PTFE tape first, the hacksaw second ....thanks for the guidance !
Great Video, really helpful for when my time comes around, keep up the great work
That was a good tip about cutting off olives. Many thanks.
No worries!
The PTFE trick round the olive worked a treat. Many thanks.
No wozzers mate!
Thank you sir! I had a leaking fitting, changed out the valve, hoses, etc. and it still leaked. I took the olive off and replaced the nut and olive and it still leaked. The trick for wrapping the tape around the olive saved me! It finally stopped dripping!
Top presentation and excellent advice, thanks dude!
Awesome tips.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Great advice , did as you said, wrapped some PTFE, job done . Top man many thanks
fantastic video for DIY's AND begginers.....welldone
Thanks Plumber-dude! You've saved my DIY project once again. One of these days... I might bless you with a homemade crumble.
Ha! What type?!
@@plumberparts Garden rhubarb, no less. It does wonders for human plumbing, you know!
Hello from Colorado, U.S.A.! Great video! I had not realized PTFE tape could assist a compression fitting. We Americans say "pliers," you say "grips." I like "grips" better. We say "ferrule," you say "olive." I will stay with "ferrule," as I detest olives. The hat switching was quite entertaining. Subtle. Nice. Thank you for posting the encouraging video.
Thank you for your videos - have a leaking radiator valve to repair or replace, so this video plus the system drain-down and refill ones will be of great use today. And it looks like rain, so we're good to go! though I don't have as many hats as you!
Really brilliant instructional vids! Thanks ☺️
Thank you for making and posting this! Gotta love Brits! Cheers from Vancouver Island.

Good set of options with clear explanation and cheerful style. Turns out I knew all that already, but it's nice to see a real plumber saying 'yeah you can use PTFE on an olive, nothing bad will happen and it might work'. (Lots of people will tell you blue in the face that this is wrong and bad, but it usually worked for me, when taking the olive off and starting again was not convenient).
Cheer dude!
Gonna give this a go as the slow drip is driving me bonkers....but I will say a great video...but the accent and bonus words I didn't know made it even better! Love vids from across the pond.
+fortislander1980 Hi there and thanks! Good luck!
Really helpful video. Because of this video I proved to my missus that I can be right as she wanted to call the 'guy'. Not to mention the money saved. Followed this step by step and my dripping pipe is well and truly sealed. Cheers mate. Hats off to you Sir.
Your advice worked great. Thank you so much.
great job! compression fitting one refrigerator water valve (ice maker/dispenser) wouldn't seal. Use your plumber's tape idea . . worked perfectly.
