  • In this video, I go over the history of Paiste 2002 cymbals and related cymbals in a shortened history sort of format. Paiste 2002 cymbals are at the core of classic rock's sound and are still used very commonly by many drummers today, enjoy!

The History Of Paiste 2002 Cymbals
Paiste 2002 cymbals are simply iconic, as much as the word iconic is overused in the modern day, if you’re in the drumming world, Paiste 2002 cymbals do warrant being called iconic. When it comes to the history of rock music in particular, it’s hard to imagine the evolution of drum sounds through rock’s golden age without Paiste 2002 cymbals, and I’m going to include Giant Beat and the Rude series within this family of cymbals, one because the 2002 was the original successor to the Giant Beat line, and the Rude line of cymbals was derived from the same type of alloy as the 2002 and Giant Beat, so there is a lineage there.

I have a pretty large collection of both Black and Red label 2002, and the thing that's a noticeable difference straight off the rip is the thickness. Black labels are a tiny bit thinner and have a little bit more of a shimmering sound with a quicker decay. Love both red and black equally. Love the Rude Sound Edge hi hats and the 26'' Giant Beat ride too. Paiste makes some incredible cymbals. Thank you for posting this video.

Paiste's PST intro line has a better tone than just about every other cymbal co's pro level cymbals. The 17 2002 SE hats are very nice!!! Paiste makes the best cymbals by far, but they MUST start making the cleaner again!!

I just think that these two European companies cover the gamut of sound that a majority of drummers want to hear and explore, with all of the options available! I enjoy reading about the different alloys that Paiste and Meinl use and just how that affects their overall sounds that make them so musically viable!

The black label 2002, which are darker, warmer, and a bit drier, are now the Big Beat Series and feature the Black Logo. The 2002 Series has the Red Logo and are brighter. I have a set of both and the Big Beats are a really great alternative, when you have a gig in a smaller room.

Dude you hit the nail on the head. I totally believe that as a cymbal ages it's going to darken in tone because I have several red label 2002 from the early 80's and they are definitely much darker than when I 1st bought them. The reason I know for sure is I have recordings of them from back in the day and when I compare the recordings to the sound of them now they sound much much darker. Yes I'm old...lol!!!

I've always played Zildjian but Paiste will be my future choice. They seem to just open up better. I bought some 404 high hats (I think) and they sound fantastic. Used $74.99 at guitar center. I was nervous but when I set them up and played them with my big band I was so pleased. Giddy actually. A nice sizzle and excellent chick. Next up, a 16 or 17 inch fast crash.

The difference in sound between the early and newer cymbals is science. The combined metals are separating from one another. The earlier 2002's don't sound the same as when they were new because of the combined metals pulling away or separating from one another. Eventually the metals will separate into different groups. It may take 1,000 years, but it will happen.

Thanks for the video. I bought my first 2002 crash in the 80's. Sadly, I never really warmed up to it and favored darker cymbals. I don't know, the near-field sound was harsh, it just sat on top of everything. I felt the overtone made it hard to hear what was going on.
I pulled it out a few years ago while recording and quickly started to realize that I was mistaken. I literally didn't play the thing for 30 years. Sitting on top of a wall of rock and roll is what they are designed to do. They do that better than anything I have played in the last 40 odd years. Since I have purchased the 15" hats and two rides... Great cymbals.

I love my Paiste cymbals, to me they have a clearer ringing sound than Zildjian cymbals that I also find to be a bit thicker in nature, what is good for one drummer isn't the best for another, it's just a matter of taste and what sounds good for the band their played in.

I have a set of modern 15" 2002 Soundedge hats, and my buddy has a pair of 15" black label 2002 Soundedge from 1979. His are far warmer sounding than mine. One noticable difference, is the fact that mine are coated in a clear coat and seem far more orange than his. His are natural finish and appear to have more tin in them. They don't look like they're made of the same alloy at all. I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but I find my modern versions less than desirable.

Black Labels are thinner than the red. In the 80s, cymbal companies beefed up the weights bigtime. So that is why Black Labels are warmer.

Thats a cool idea for a video, but could use some deeper digging. The first B8 line was actually the Stambuls, in mid 1960s. They were first made of nickel-silver alloy, but then Paiste developed the B8 bronze and incorporated it in the Stambul line. Then as they gained expirience with it they introduced the Giant Beat line. The first Giant Beats were a bit different than the modern reissue. The originals had different mould shapes and were also a bit heavier than todays counterparts. Like a 24" could be even up to 500g heavier than the modern 24" multi.
As for the 2002s - the black labels were in fact thinner than the red label counterparts. It can range from about 100 to 200g difference on a 20" crash model. I`m speaking from a personal expirience here, not drum forums threads. I guess the reasoning behind the red labels being thicker is that the music kept getting heavier and louder, which led to many young drummers thinking they had to bash the cymbals as hard as they could. That in turn led to breaking, so I guess Paiste decided to buff their cymbals up. It's not just in 2002s, the 80s green label 505 line is also much heavier than the late 70s black label 505s.
Well anyway, I really enjoyed that. Cheers!

The first B8 line was actually Stambul 65. Stambul 65 were always a separate series from Stambul and sold at the same time. Stambul went from NS12 to B8 sometime around 1971 as Stambul 65 and Giant Beat were winding down production.

Now that I can buy what I want, I still stick with b20 Zildjian cymbals... B20 alloy is naturally darker sounding with a mellower sustain. B8, as well as Paiste makes them just doesn't have the feel and sound I'm looking for.

    • @markpichler9070
      @markpichler9070 Год назад

Well, at the end it is only a question of taste. But to your comment I want write some points: Paiste before the B8 used also B20, first with the Sound Formula 602 cymbals, later with the twenty series (even if produced in Turkey and only finally checket in Switzerland). Maybe your "error" in your youth was to chose 2002 instead of Formula 602. I can also understand your point that you feel better with B20 cymbals and the much darker, warmer sound than a B8. For years - as a Sabian Boy - I chosed the HH serie (played also some Avedis and K's) and played also Rock with them. But we have also to confirm: you can also make with B20 higher sounding cymbals (Avedis or ACustoms...or AA and AAX) and one point is important: Paiste is able to make great sounding cymbals with B8 but Zildjian and Sabian with the B8 - expect some cymbals of the B8Pro series - generally made only worst cymbals. I have to say: for years I played B20 and I always hated Paiste and in great part this 2002 series (the red label was horror for me)... but in the last years, listen to more and more music, more and more cymbals... I am a fan of the 2002 and Paiste and now I am on the point - after more than 35 years - to change my complete setup and switch in big part to Paiste. For the moment I use a 18 black label 2002 crash, and for today I am awaiting a red label thin crash of 2002. I just cannot say how the way will go.

    • @Corbrwl

Agree. The way I see it, the 602's were a "poor-man's 2002's", and the Big Beats are a "poor-man's Zildjian K Constantinople's". I say that due to the similar tone partially as a result of the manufacturing hand-hammered method. I prefer the Big-Beats to the 2002's. Warmer tone, lower pitched, more controlled sound, more shimmer, more versatile. The 2002's are a bit "splashy" for me, if you know what I mean, which is strange since generally the 2002's weigh more than the Big Beats of equivalent size.
