This interview with Meckler was good! Anyone interested in HLP should listen to it.

Hi, random average joe attempt here:
It teaches you how to hold a position a few "ticks" longer where you are completely ready to swing. It teaches you the habit of removing all extra, unnecessary movement. That way your swing happens all at once, instantaneously, instead of developing in several incremental steps. The idea is switching from an immediate swing to hold and actually wait for the ball lets you get feel of "i am completely ready in the hold position to swing, this is what i want to feel as the pitch comes." Getting rid of the slack, and ready to pop. The goal is to feel the hold. This way you are ready to react exactly when you need to, less at mercy of changing velocity, or a quick pitch, and relying on perfect timing to do all your little final loading movements to make quality contact consistently.
      I think.

Ready at release means you doing all the pre-swing movements before the pitcher releases the ball. It's a timing thing that has to be practiced and learned over a period of time. That way, it turns into muscle memory when you start to master it.

I have a serious question as to whether HLP might actually be counterproductive for me. I'm an old dude playing in a couple of senior leagues. So I'm not trying to hit velo. I'm trying to hit middle aged guys throwing mostly in the 60s and 70s. Very occasionally 80, but not often. Could trying to do the HLP actually eff me up? I've SORT OF been trying it, but it's not necessarily easy to learn. But increased bat speed is increased bat speed? Right? But I'm also not trying to hit 400 foot bombs. Line drives is all I'm after. So ... any thoughts anyone?

Well, in my opinion, as a hitter, bat speed is the most important weapon in your arsenal. There is a big difference between hitting the ball, hitting the ball hard, and hitting the ball with authority. You want a swing that allows you to hit the ball with authority consistently. This means even your ground balls come slicing hot off the bat. You want the defense to be afraid every time you step in the batter's box because they know that no matter what the ball always comes smoking hot off your bat. HLP is definitely going to help you achieve the results you want. Understand that said results are not going to happen overnight. It's going to take time reprograming yourself to swing a bat in a way you are not used to. If you want HLP to work you have to be patient and give it time. Your swing will go through a transitional phase that you will perceive as the new method effing up your mechanics. Don't get frustrated and abandon HLP. Keep working at it until it becomes muscle memory.
My advice is don't try to overhaul your swing during the season. Wait till the off season when you are not playing games.
      Good Luck.

Richard, 1.) Wonder if we need to ask how to fix a swing if the batter is stretched too early and has lost their hold on the stretch by the time the pitch arrives, 2.) At 1:37 your text reads "leep" if it matters. 3.) I feel like, now that I've seen the first part of this video with the interview, that you are now purposely missing the pitches in the ready at release video clip you added towards the end of this very video. I've seen your ready at release video many times and I thought you just simply missed those pitches because you are warming up but now this video makes me feel like you are purposely missing a Step 1 of the drill.

-1). Need to work on controlling that stretch, 2). Typo, should read "keep", 3). Yes, on the first two reps, those pitches are missed on purpose to drill swinging at pitch release
