Speedpaint Bleed IS a problem!

  • Paint bleed happens. I know a lot of pro painters have minimized the issue or have adapted this property as part of the painting process when they use Army Painter Speedpaints.
    But it IS a problem.
It's not just the usual complaining from internet randos. It happens and here's evidence.

AP said that the drying agent that slows the drying time for the speedpaint is what causes the reactivation issue.
Also don't handbrush the varnish on the speedpaint. You need to airbrush it. Airbrushing the varnish seems to solve most of the problem as it dries quickly and doesn't pull when you brush the paint on.

I've let the Speedpaint dry for over 24 hours and the reactivation issue happened. So unless AP maintains that this stuff will never dry or it has a multi-day cure time, I'm calling shenanigans on their statement.
After watching their 2.0 release video, I have a better idea what happened. They simply never anticipated people wanting to layer anything over their Speedpaint and never tested for it. It's an error and we all make mistakes, but maybe they could own up to it, rather than PR-speak the entire time.

@@YourAverageBearGaming they are owning up to it? Its why they're designing a 2.0 because some people like the reactivation to wet blend while others don't.
Honestly you are being way too critical of them about this. It's an issue which they've addressed and fixed within a year, if that isn't a company listening to feedback then idk what else is.

Just bought a bunch of these and then heard version 2.0 was on the way. This could be fun

Yeah, I saw that this week. It sounds like they fixed the issue, but we will see.

Didn't know it would do that

It got some coverage when they first came out and I think the pros basically figured them out and assumed the rest of us did too.

You are probably aware that Army Painter has been quite public in acknowledging this issue and are working on a corrective formula. They have recommended varnishing if you are adding layers to speedpaint, which you have tried, not without problems. Early in the release and discussion of the issue, I heard someone suggest a spray on varnish rather than a brush on varnish should help. Perhaps because it is a thinner coat that dries sooner and locks in the color, or perhaps because the physcial impact of the brush stroke is having an impact? Or both? Have you tried the approach Dana Howl suggested about using the speedpaint medium mixed with your regular acrylic I don't have the experience to say these approaches are going to work for you. Just suggesting that I'd be interested in seeing the content if you do try.

Thanks for the helpful comments! The last bit I have heard from Army Painter was that "Apology" video they released last year. They didn't so much apologize, so much as said they were listening to user feedback. We were supposed to "hear" an apology, but they never actually said they messed up, or even mentioned this issue by name.
However, they may have elaborated on other social media platforms and I simply don't follow them.
I am glad they are working on the issue- I love Army Painter and want them to do well. And make more awesome products for me to buy!

I just remembered that in that video I mentioned the only specific action they talked about was including a mixing ball in each bottle. They thought the biggest issue was paint separation- they never even hinted at Speedpaint bleed.

I'd troll you for not varnishing first, which was established when they were released via social media channels. I also won't say that the speed painted sword looked better than the rest of your almost-fully-painted model. NO SIR! No trolling! However, i've recently discovered that the speed paints WILL reactivate and bleed via the varnish itself. So all around, this first batch is indeed, shit.

LOL! Yeah, I figured that out the hard way. Stuff bled though brush on primer and matt varnish.
The stupid thing is I have SEEN some pros use it and blend on top of it. What the heck am I doing wrong?
