No surprise the rear end of the Volvo looked like that. They stripped it down and compromised the structural integrity plus high speed impact at a bad angle. Ive never seen a V70 this badly folded up even after real traffic accidents its unreal that a Golf did that.
Seemed to me that the trunk absorbed all the impact. The cabin seems ok. I don't thing that anyone could have died in Volvo. I drive Volvo and I'm confident in these cars.
That volvo is from the 90,s the golf is an 03 so the golf had that advantage. The volvo might have been stripped to reduce weight as well. Both are very safe cars though German and Swedish. A newer volvo equivalent to the year of the golf would have faired better. To be fair you have to realize all these factors. Different years they are modified race cars in unkown structural ways and golf's are German cars which are very safe as well and arguably on par with volvos. Reality is If they were the same year and standard non modified cars then it would likely be a far different outcome.
The V70 were released 1996 and the Golf 4 1998. What’s your point now? Why you are looking for excuses? The The Golf 4 is safer, stronger and better than this ugly Volvo. Period!
@@m.b.6744 There is no really good reason to get into such conclusions, if you do not know full details of the crash, background and state of the cars and mainly the background of these car models. V70 was released in 1996 but it was built on the same P80 platform as the 850 which was released in 1991 (probably developed much earlier) - this means that it is built on the exact same chassis but it is just a facelift for nicer front and interior. 850 was designed in the same era as Golf mk2 - a car 2 generations older than this Golf in the accident so if you really want to compare them like that, find some photos of a rear ended golf mk2. One is for sure - Volvo got hit into one corner at an angle and Golf almost straight in the middle, which instantly reduces the number of critical impact absorbing structures on the Volvo - the rear wheel was pushed straight into the cabin since it had no strengthened body structures to stop it - these are small but important details that change the result drastically. These Volvos (1st gen V70 and older 850 are generally known for super strong chassis and safety. Since they are now quite old and affordable they are often used at destruction derby but due to their superior strength they are prohibited in some series just to make it more fair for all teams :D Considering the Volvo was used as a race car it was probably fully stripped and who knows, maybe it was a total rust bucket and even gone through some previous crashes and not restored to original condition - all this affects the overall strength and how the body deforms.

This is true to a certain extent. Volvos are not industructable like some might think nor were they designed to be. They are safer due to a number of reasons even as detailed as seat design. Let's be honest though God knows what structure modifications or even strip downs these cars might have they are race cars not factory daily drivers and factor in that volvo design is roughly 5 to 10 years older than that golf to be fair.

Golf absorbed the impact very well. No intrusion into the cabin. Perhaps we need rear end crash test on newer cars to test the safety.
